Laura Cunningham is a jewelry maker specializing in beautiful charms, lives with her long-term boyfriend Jack and has a secret side to herself that she’s desperate to keep contained. When she’s commissioned to create a personalized charm bracelet for Rob Blake’s wife Cat, Laura ends up immersed in their lives and subsequently awakens a part of herself that she’s struggled to keep dormant.
So the not so great. The enigma of Laura’s past took up the vast majority of The Perfect Present and made it less straight forward than you would think. It was engaging at first and gave her an air of intrigue but this was such a long story that the desire to learn her secret became a need rather than a desire after a certain point. The mystery unfolded near to the very end of the story and could have definitely been given more page time in order to fully explain everything so as to make Laura’s actions throughout the story much more plausible.
Now the good. Karen Swan has managed to create a multi-layered character in Laura Cunningham. She remained a complete mystery throughout the entire tale (which is both good and bad as you’ll see below) which was infinitely important in a 500+ page story. In addition to Laura’s character, there is a full cast of characters which Laura has to interview in order to complete the commissioned job and each of them were given a solid back-story. Kitty was by far my favorite and was the most realistic and likable one of the bunch. The men were all the brooding sort but it was never taken too overboard. I also loved that this was a far from perfect tale and there wasn’t technically a happy ending, or at least not the type of happy ending that you would have gone in expecting.
After reading Christmas at Tiffany’s I was desperate to get my hands on more of Karen Swan’s work. Tiffany’s was A+ and one of my most favorite stories of the year. Perfect Present wasn’t an enthralling but was still enjoyable and was far from your typical chicklit type tale which I appreciated. Taking place throughout the month of December including Christmas day so this was the perfect time to read this story. This is now my second read of hers and I will either need to have more of her stories shipped from the UK or hope that US publishers pick up her stories… or both would work too.

Поредната префектна книга на Суон.
Тази жена е много добър разказвач!
Главната героиня Лора изработва поръчкови бижута и амулети в ограничен локален пазар. Един ден на прага на работилничката, намираща се в плитчините над морето, влиза богатият Робърт Блейк. Той й поръчва специално колие с амулети за жена му Кат. Поръчката е специална и всеки амулет трябва да отразява живота на жена му със седем от най-близките й хора. Лора трябва да направи седем интервюта, а заплащането е съблазнително. Тази на пръв поглед лесна задача се превръща в детективска акция, достигаща до душевните дълбини на хората и техните най-съкровенни спомени. Цялата група около Кат е толкова колоритна и забвана. Вихрушката от събития ще ви вдигнат адреналина в една красива хижа във Вербие под величествените Алпи с нейните прекрасни писти.

Суон за пореден път доказа себе си с това бижу. Толкова много се вживях в тази история, така описателно и въздействащо е всичко тук, че не ми се искаше да свършва. Лора, главната героиня олицетворява за мен един ангел. Тя не е съвършена, напротив има своите недостатъци и самата тя е объркана, не вярва в себе си, всичко е свързано с призраците от миналото ѝ, опитва се да живее чужд живот и това не я прави пълноценен човек, до момента, в който не среща Роб. Той успява да изкара от нея истинското ѝ аз и тя започва да се бори за осъществяване на мечтите си. Въпреки загубите, които е изживявала, Лора успява да съхрани себе си, благодарение на таланта да изработва уникални и красиви талисмани, които говорят много за живота на хората, които ги носят. Перфектният подарък е книга за изборите, които правим, за прошката, която трябва да дадем, дори понякога да простим сами на себе си, учи ни, че има по-ценни неща от материалните, а именно това са семейството и истинските приятели. Интересна, вълнуваща, с неочаквани обрати и забавни случки, трогателни истории и взаимоотношения между колоритни герои, тази книга за мен е за заслужени 5 ⭐.

Изслушах я за норматив. Карън Суон си е моето guilty pleasure. Обичам историите ѝ, защото въпреки романтиката не са диабетично захаросани и обидно предвидими. Те са построени с доста мисъл от страна на автора към читателя, историите са многопластови, да на моменти предвидими, но това не убива удоволствието от четенето.
Освен всичко останало това е и първата аудиокнига, на която се насладих на 100%. Петя Абаджиева е страхотен наратор, които предава емоциите на героите и настроението на книгата изключително увлекателно и достоверно.

I find Laura such a likeable character from the start and I love her red shoes.
This book knows how to keep you guessing from Laura fainting with no explanation and a charm necklace she's making for Rob's wife's birthday. Everyone she interviews for it is surrounded by mystery.
Laura has two sort of friendship group's throughout the book and it's clear in the end the two who supported her most but that doesn't mean Kitty and Rob don't care for her.
Rob might be married but the chemistry between Laura and him is much more than what she feels for Jack and he feels for Cat.
Some of the characters blow hot and cold and I can see in many parts how Laura only trusts herself. I wanted people to say NO to Cat so much as she's not used to hearing the word.
The best mystery I found was about the Convent Garden bombing it was so sad and explained a lot about how the characters behave and how they know each other.
I was rooting for Rob and Laura for such a long-time and it wasn't because I didn't like Jack but they weren't suited as she's not her sister Lily. The scene were Rob appears at the end is so sweet.
I loved this book so easy to read and it kept me guessing easily a five star from me.

Прологът започва с едно послание на майка към двете й дъщери и действително очаквах нещо да се случва около тях.Темата обаче се измести още с първата глава.И така си остана докрая,въртеше покрай тях,разказваше за други хора и отношенията им и така и не разбрах почти нищо за живота на двете сестри.Въпреки това ми хареса,имаше хубави,романтични моменти и тайни.Корицата доста подвежда обаче,чак толкова коледна не е.

Ох, тази книга! Колкото повече се доближава до финала, толкова повече исках да има още. Изобщо не исках да свърши. Тъкмо се събраха и край, а аз искам още...
Започнах да слушам книгата в Сторител абсолютно на сляпо, без да знам дори имената на главните герои. А Петя Абаджиева така мелодично чете.
Първоначално ми беше малко трудно да вляза в историята, чудех се какво става, коя ще е двойката, защо няма наченки на любовна история, някакъв флирт, нещо?! Но не!
Затова пък доста обстойно авторката ни представи главната си героиня Лора, изкусна бижутерка, изработваща уникални и неповторими талисмани за всеки клиент. За целта води цели разследвания за живота на клиентите си и научава тайни, които никой друг не би научил. Така се озовава в групата приятели на Кат - страхотна, мила и впечатляваща жена, съпруга на поръчителя на поръчката Робърт. Той пък иска това да бъде Перфектният подарък, който ще разкаже живота на жена му с възходите и паденията. Озовала се в света на богатите, Лора е заслепена и готова да се впусне в приключения, за които не е подозирала, че може да й се изпречат. Изследвайки живота на Кат, Лора открива тайни, които могат да опропастят подредения живот на богаташката. И Лора трябва да вземе решение за себе си дали не е време да излезе от черупката си и започне ��а живее истински или да премълчи и да продължи по стария и познат начин, който е и по лесен, но и скучен.
Хареса ми, че в книгата сякаш нямаше главни и второстепенни герои, всички характери бяха толкова добре обрисувани и развити, всеки си имаше своята история и мотиви, причини и следствия, за да бъде такъв какъвто е. Доста реалистично написана книга без излишни разкрасявания, които просто да се харесат на читателя. В истинския живот няма само положителни или само отрицателни персонажи, в тази книга също. Героите са показани с техните хубави и лоши черти и естествени реакции спрямо ситуацията.

И самата Кат го каза - какъв мъж си ако знаеш, че жена ти ти изневерява и не те обича и ти въпреки всичко й прощаваш?! Къде е самоуважениято?! Той все едно й пълзеше в краката. Яд ме беше, че е толкова заслепен или глупав или и аз не знам. Той трябваше с подаръка да й каже край и направо да се събере с Лора. Пфу! А, когато тъкмо се събраха, книгата свърши. Ох, поне Лора намери истинското си Аз!

Šiais metais nusprendžiau, jog pats laikas yra susipažinti su Karen Swan knygomis 📚 Dar gruodžio pradžioje teko skaityti "Kalėdų dovana", kuri man pasirodė šilta bei jauki istorija. Tuos pačius jausmus man sukėlė ir ši knyga.
Laura Kaningam - išskirtinė savitų papuošalų kūrėja. Juos kurdama ši moteris stengiasi užsimiršti bei pabėgti nuo savo praeities. Vieną dieną į jos studiją užsuka Robas Bleikas. Jis nori, jog Laura sukurtų ypatingą papuošalą jo žmonai. Tai turi būti toks vėrinys, kurio kiekvienas iš pakabukų pasakotų savo istoriją. O ta istorija pasakotų apie Ketę bei jos brangiausius žmones. Dėl šio vėrinio Laura turės susitikti su Ketės draugais bei artimaisiais, jog galėtų kuo tiksliau atskleisti pakabučių reikšmę. Po truputį Laura patenka į tokį gyvenimą, kuris jai iki dabar buvo svetimas. Prašmatnūs rūbai, prabangūs vakarėliai bei slidinėjimo kurortai.
Susipažinus su pačia Kete gali pasirodyto, jog ji yra tiesiog tobula. Tačiau paaiškėja, jog kaip ir dažniausiai gyvenime, taip ir čia.. Nėra nieko tobulo. Laura nenusprendžia kaip jai elgtis su sužinota tiesa.. Apsimesti, jog nieko neįvyko? O galbūt jai vertėtų pasidalinti ja su kitais?
Karen Swan rašo jaukiai bei lengvai. Istorijos tikrai įtraukiančios bei intriguojančios. Bent šioje knygoje, jau istorijos pradžioje autore "užmeta" kabliuką, kuris pritraukia skaitytojo dėmesį, o visą jo paaiškinimą sužinome tik kūrinio pabaigoje.
Šioje knygoje man patiko draugystės, meilės bei stiprybės tema. Nors knyga iš pradžių gali gąsdinti savo apimtimi, bet jos bijoti visai nereikia. Kūrinys labai lengvaj skaitomas, o ir skaityti tikrai nebus nuobodu. Man asmeniškai ši knyga patiko labiau nei "Kalėdų dovana". Tiesa, teko truputį nusivilti, jog knygose mažai tų kalėdų galima rasti, tačiau nepaisant to, prieš šventes jos knygos tikrai tinkamos. Istorijos tokios, kurios tikrai sušildys širdį bei sielą✨

After recently reading my first novel by Karen Swan, Christmas at Tiffany's which I thoroughly enjoyed, I was excited to start another christmas-themed novel by her. My expectations were pretty high.
Unfortunately I couldn't really connect with this book which was pretty much the "fault" of the main protagonist, Laura. I found her weird and couldn't really get emotionally connected with her despite what she has been through in her life. Kitty was the only character I absolutely loved. I could identify with her as she was a natural and down to earth woman.
The book also had quite a few lengths which could have been cut way shorter. I did enjoy Swan's writing style and story building after all, so I will definetely read more by her. I also liked the message the book was carrying.

Противно на очакванията ми - се влюбих в тази история!
Ето книга, която те кара да се замислиш дали хората, които срещаш и към които си лоялен, не крият истинското си лице зад огромен набор от маски (по една за всеки миг от деня).
Героите са истински и несъвършени... А стилът може да те приласкае и да те прегърне като топли приятелски ръце!
Не ми беше никак коледна, но е великолепен разказ за хората, които срещаме, за уроците, които научаваме и за силата, която крием понякога дори и от самите себе си.
Препоръчвам, ако ти трябва книжка за почивка и разтоварване 🧡

Изобщо не очаквах от книгата това, което получих. Приятно ме изненада. Имаше драма, травми от миналото, изнерви. Идеята за подаръка толкова много ме плени. Хареса ми личния елемент и интерпретацията на всяко едно бижу. Образът на Кити някак ми напомняше на майката Уизли.

4-4.5* for the story and 1* for the exceptional audio performance
Много ми хареса тази история. Зимна, празнична и се оказа някак наистина Перфектният подарък за мен в този момент. Явно бях на тази вълна и изцяло влязох в настроението на книгата. Буквално от самото начало ме грабна. Интригуващи персонажи, многопластови, с много комплексни истории, които бяха умело преплетени. Но се получи една колоритна група от герои, които много ми допаднаха. Всеки по свой начин допринесе към сюжета и му придаде още повече цвят. А какво да кажа за тези описания. Красота. Просто се потопих в снежната обстановка и буквално си представях всичко и всички до последния детайл. Страхотна жива картина и настроение ми внесе цялото това приключение.
През цялото време имах своите си хипотези за това какво се случва и защо, но в един момент просто се предадох на историята и оставих тя да ме води. Очакванията ми за финала и развръзката бяха съвсем различни от това, което се случи, но пък трябва да призная, че беше доста реалистично написан и въпреки всичко, ми хареса този Хепи енд за всички, който беше поднесен. Успя да ме изненада в тази част и макар изначално да се разочаровах, че хипотезата ми не се потвърди, накрая, въпреки всичко, ми хареса как беше замислена цялата история.
Като настроение книгата започна доста леко, забавно, с много смях и забавления с тази шумна групичка. Но постепенно маските паднаха, всички малко по малко се разкриха и истините излязоха наяве с пълна сила. А в самия край имаше една емоционална част, която дори ме просълзи. Имаше и забавни и сериозни моменти в тази книга, и доста храна за размисъл по някои теми.
В комбинация с атмосферата и цветните персонажи, беше истинско приключение тази история.
А аудиото на английски беше черешката на тортата. Гласове, интонации, емоция, всичко. Много силен прочит на историята, който ми допълни към цялостно позитивно усещане от книгата.

Love is not a strong enough word for this book. The description on the back of the book does it no justice at all. The themes in this story run the gamut yet are so artfully woven together: love, passion, honesty, friendship, and loss. Karen Swan is a masterful storyteller, her stories draw you in and keep you turning the pages and burning the midnight oil. No spoilers here, but I will say I can usually guess an ending and I was definitely surprised, which I loved. And the questions it asks about who we really are at the core, the definition of our truest selves. It is a book I will recommend to friends...wish all her books were available on Kindle here in the States. Now moving on to read the 2 other books of her's I got in the mail this past week!

Изненадана и приятно впечатлена съм от сюжета и емоциите, които предизвика в мен “Перфектният подарък”. Това е трета книга, която чета на авторката Карън Суон и за момента фаворитът ми (остава ми само “Парижка тайна” и надежда, че ще има още преведени нейни заглавия на български). Бих препоръчала горещо да се чете около коледните празници или поне около снежни месеци, въпреки че при мен се случи да я чета от Великден, та чак до края на юли… И пак ми хареса, нищо че дочитах последните глави на плажа, а всичко вътре в книгата се развива в рамките на 10 снежни дни…
Прегърнати от магията на снега, любовта, прошката и вървейки по пътя на тайните… вие ще се озовете в един различен свят, който ще ви кара да искате още и още.

Допадна ми. Стилът на авторката ми хареса още в "Коледа в "Тифани" и затвърждава това тук. Макар и да не съм фен на коледните истории, няма как да отрека, че Карън Суон е страхотен разказвач, който знае как да разкаже коледна история по най-добрия начин.

Kritik:
Cover: So schön winterlich und romantisch. Ein Cover zum Verlieben. Nur das Bild hat leider nur wenig mit dem Inhalt zu tun. Mir hätte eine Frau in roten Schuhen oder eben eine Kette mit Anhängern im Bild besser gefallen. Dennoch herrlich romantisch.
Eindrücke: Eine Liebesgeschichte. Das verspricht sowohl das Cover als auch der Klappentext. Doch so richtig romantische Stimmung wollte bei mir einfach nicht aufkommen. Ich hatte mir wirklich mehr von diesem Buch erwartet. Gespannt wartete ich auf die Auflösung, welche Anhänger zu welcher Person erstellt würde. Auch das hat mich dann am Ende etwas enttäuscht. Die Charaktere konnten mich ebenfalls nicht ganz überzeugen, da außer Kitty, mir keiner wirklich sympathisch war. Und die war nur eine Nebenfigur. Die Romanze enttäuschte mich ebenfalls, da Rob mir als Mann nicht attraktiv genug war. Ein Schönling ja, aber ein untreuer Mann ist nun wirklich nicht anziehend. Und dann sogar noch als Wiederholungstäter.
Charaktere: Laura wird als sehr zurückgezogen, bescheiden, schüchtern beschrieben. Doch schnell merkt man, da steckt mehr dahinter. Von da an wird sie sehr mysteriös dargestellt. Das wirkt manchmal etwas sehr gewollt. Leider war sie mir nicht wirklich sympathisch. Zu schnell lässt sie ihr “altes” Leben hinter sich und verfällt Glanz und Gloria.
Mir hat auch nicht gefallen, wie sie sich zu Rob, später dann Alex und wieder Rob hingezogen fühlt. Scheinbar verfielen ihr plötzlich alle Männer. Hmm, wenig überzeugend. Und auch der Love interest Rob war für mich ein blasser Schönling. An dem war nichts interessant. Seine Verlobte verließ er für Cat. Nun schwärmt er für Laura, obwohl er verheiratet ist. Was soll uns daran jetzt sympathisch sein? Er geht fremd, wenn auch vielleicht nur im Geiste. Was für Hoffnung hat man da für diese Beziehung. Weiß nicht, mir haben diese Konstellationen nicht so recht gefallen.
Einzig Kitty war mir sympathisch. Bodenständig und authentisch.
Stil/Gliederung: Auch hier gibt es wieder angenehm kurze Kapitel. Der Schreibstil ist flüssig. Die Beschreibungen sind eher detailliert, was mich nicht gestört hat, da ich gern ein umfassenderes Bild bekomme.

Историята доста бавно започна, но в последствие разви потенциала си. Със сигурност я сравнявам с другата на Суон - "Коледна тайна", която освен, че ми беше първата романтична коледна книга, ми се превърна и бързо в любима, та тук очакванията просто бяха по-високи.
Имаше чудесно изградени моменти, но други ми се сториха излишно описателни. Финалът, въпреки че имаше потенциал да е доста нестандартен, в крайна сметка го усетих претрупан. Оставям три звезди, защото все пак сюжетът бе изчерпателен, героите различни, а развръзките особено увлекателни и интелигентно поднесени. ♡

And again Karen Swan's book did not disappoint me. Full with details, this book has story which hold you to read it till the end holding your breath. This lady has big heart for creativity and imaginations. I'm looking for her next book.....

Hearts are opened, secrets revealed and as the necklace begins to fill up with trinkets, Cat’s intoxicating life envelops Laura’s own.

Her tender and considerate boyfriend Jack; their dog Arthur; and her bubbly young friend Fee are the only people in her life, and she is happy with it. She is scared of crowds, does not want to make new friends, and is content in her small world. To be honest, I was not very impressed with this timid, snappish woman.
Something haunts her, we come to know. She can’t sleep, she has no ambition, and something gives her nightmares. Then Rob Blake steps in, business man extraordinaire, gorgeous, rich, and married. He wants Laura to make a charm necklace for his wife’s thirty-second birthday, and agrees to pay nearly twenty thousand for it. Laura needs the money to give Jack his Christmas present, and reluctantly agrees.
As per the agreement, the necklace will have seven charms, representing the seven most important people in Cat’s life. Each charm will be unique, showing the relationship Cat shares with that particular person. For this, Laura has to interview all seven people. Since two of these seven people live outside the country, Rob offers to make things easier for her. A holiday is planned in the beautiful Verbier, Switzerland, where all seven will be in attendance. Rob asks Laura to tag along. She refuses at first. A private chalet in Switzerland is not her idea of weekend getaway, but it’s convenient, and she sees no other alternative. Jack is unhappy about this, but is given no choice in the matter.
Slowly, Laura gets to know Cat, who looks perfect in all ways. Extraordinarily beautiful, kind but generous, smart but wild, and very brave. Different people in her life highlight different facets of her, and despite herself, Laura is hooked. Who is this ideal woman? Is she really as perfect as she looks?
No. Turns out, all that glitters is really not gold.
It (Cat’s life) was not a perfect life by any means, though many people held it to be: its incumbent was beautiful but flawed, spoiled and selfish, but also kind and unquestionably generous; a woman who couldn’t be pinned down to just one interpretation. She was a polished jewel honed from inauspicious beginnings, and as multifaceted as a diamond: a wife, a sister, a first love, a friend – not necessarily excelling in any of those capacities, but who ever said she had to? She was loved by the people on this necklace, anyway. Laura didn’t have the answers to all her questions about Cat, but did anyone ever know someone else in complete fullness? Did anyone even have the right to complete ownership of another person’s history, secrets and dreams?
As the book’s seemingly simple plot progresses, its many layers are unveiled. Laura’s life is changed, as she is sucked into the Blakes’ expensive lifestyle. Readers may take a while to warm up to Laura, as did I. She came across as fickle, and ungrateful, and I felt sorry for Jack. It was difficult for me to reason why he would stay with her for as long as he has done, and wondered where this source of patience was stemming from. Something was being held from the reader, which is only unveiled right near the end. She is certainly a flawed character, but you fall for her anyway.
It’s not an easy chick-lit. The whirlwind lavish lifestyle comes across as shallow and petty, but this book also has a lot of heart. You have to really work to stay on top of the characters, mainly because the characterization is excellently vivid. The book is emotional without being too maudlin, and captures elegantly the complex web of human relationships.
It’s also not very easily predictable, and there is a nugget of doubt: would Rob and Laura really end up together? Absolutely not; he loves Cat just too much. But then these 530 pages have a way of really making you think whether you ever really know a person, or just make them what you think they are.
I would really like a sequel. Without giving away too much, I would like to say that Laura and Rob do end up together, but it is difficult to imagine how they’d work it out. It certainly won’t be easy with their differences, and Rob’s wealth, and I would have liked an epilogue, giving us a glimpse of the happy-ever-after.
Overall, an excellently written and plotted book. One of the best I’ve read this year. Definitely looking forward to more Kristen Swan.

Not as fun as Christmas at Tiffanys..this book its self destructed..well...i dont know but it is good and yet its sad...its about someone cant move on with her life after her sister died...even though its happy ending im still crying..happy+sad at the same time..ugh~..well..its still good..haha
