Up in the attic, with views across the sparkling bay, she opens the lid of the carved trunk. Carefully moving aside the delicate linen wedding dress once worn by her great-aunt, she unpacks all the smaller boxes inside until she finds the leather-bound diary. She knows this will change everything…
All Zoey’s happiest childhood memories are of her great-aunt Ivy’s rickety cottage on Dune Island, being spoiled with cranberry ice cream and watching the tides change from the rooftop. Now, heartbroken from a recent breakup, Zoey can see her elderly aunt’s spark is fading, and decides to move to the island so they can care for each other.
When she arrives to find her cousin, Mark, sitting at the solid oak kitchen table, she knows why Aunt Ivy hasn’t been herself. Because Mark—next in line to inherit the house—is pushing Ivy to move into a nursing home.
With the cousins clashing over what’s best for Ivy, Zoey is surprised when the local carpenter who’s working on Ivy’s cottage takes her side. As he offers Zoey comfort, the two grow close. Together, they make a discovery in the attic that links the family to the mysterious and reclusive local lighthouse keeper, and throws doubt on Mark’s claim…
Now Zoey has a heartbreaking choice to make. The discovery could keep Ivy in the house she’s loved her whole life… but can Zoey trust that the carpenter really has Ivy’s best interests at heart? And will dredging up an old secret destroy the peace and happiness of Ivy’s final years—and tear this family apart for good?
A stunning and emotional read about old secrets, new love and never forgetting the importance of family. Perfect for fans of Mary Ellen Taylor, Robyn Carr and Mary Alice Monroe.
EXCERPT: She had told her great-aunts she'd been laid off from her job as librarian when the city closed the branch where she worked, but how had Sylvia found out that she'd lost her savings and was on the brink of losing her townhome? Zoey hadn't wanted to burden her aunts by telling them that the guy she'd been seeing for the past year, a financial planner, had risked - and blown - all of her savings in a series of investments that turned out to be just shy of illegal. And she was too ashamed to admit she hadn't even realised what he'd done until she tried to withdraw money from her depleted retirement funds to pay her mortgage.

MY THOUGHTS: I was looking forward to 'a stunning and emotional read about old secrets, new love and never forgetting the importance of family.' I didn't get it.
In spite of the absolutely gorgeous cover, the contents of this book are mediocre in comparison. There were several things that I actively did not like about this book. The first is that the description of the contents bears little resemblance to what actually happens. It is misleading, especially the lead in to the blurb, 'Up in the attic, with views across the sparkling bay, she opens the lid of the carved trunk. Carefully moving aside the delicate linen wedding dress once worn by her great-aunt, she unpacks all the smaller boxes inside until she finds the leather-bound diary. She knows this will change everything…' This is wrong! This is not what happens!
The characters are mostly inconsistent. I loved Aunt Ivy and Gabi, they were the highlight of the book for me. Zoey is emotionally labile, or mercurial, Nick not much better. Mark is the biggest disappointment of all. He suddenly changes character at the end, which could have provided some real fireworks but instead fizzled out. I found the dialogue patchy, sometimes well done, but mostly stilted and unnatural.
The premise is good, and could have been made much more of. The 'mystery' is almost nonexistent. A little more continuity throughout the book focusing on the mystery itself instead of Zoey's emotional highs and lows would have greatly improved it. The ending felt rushed and, as I previously mentioned, fizzled out.
A barely average read. ⭐⭐.5
THE AUTHOR: Ever since she was a young girl, there were few things Kristin liked more than creative writing and spending time on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with her family. Eventually (after a succession of jobs that bored her to tears), she found a way to combine those two passions by becoming a women’s fiction author whose stories occur in oceanside settings. While Kristin doesn’t live on the Cape year-round, she escapes to the beach whenever she can. (Bookouture)

Aunt Ivy’s Cottage by Kristin Harper is the second book in the contemporary romance Dune Island series. As with a lot of romance series the Dune Island series has the setting as the common theme and had a new set of main characters in each book so they can be read as s standalone or in any order if choosing to do so.
Zoey’s happy place growing up was her Aunt’s Ivy’s home on Dune Island and now she is returning to that very place. Moving in with her Aunt Ivy Zoey overhears her cousin Mark making plans to move Aunt Ivy out of her home as he is next in line to inherit so Zoey knows she will do anything to stop that from happening. While living in the homed with Ivy Zoey meets Nick, a handyman, and the two grow close as Zoey tries to come up with a plan to stop Mark.
Aunt Ivy’s Cottage by Kristin Harper was a nice little story albeit not without a couple of flaws along the way. To me I felt this one could have contained a bit more romance than there was along the way and I also felt that the ending could have been smoothed out a bit more as it felt rushed. However, despite those things I still enjoyed my time back in Dune Island in the second book of the series and getting to know Zoey and her family.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
I was pleasantly surprised when reading Aunt Ivy’s Cottage by Kristin Harper. Harper is a new author to me, and I was charmed by her tale of a woman who lost her job and was staying with her great aunts Ivy and Sylvia in their beautiful old victorian house to take care of them while she decided what to do next. Zoey’s life has taken a downturn since she lost her job, and her ex-boyfriend lost all her money in questionable investments. Her aunt Sylvia dies, and now she is in an ongoing disagreement with her obnoxious cousin Mark, the heir, over Aunt Ivy’s care and the property. A local carpenter who has been doing work enters the picture, and he and Zoey form a tenuous friendship.
As much as I enjoyed this story, there were parts I thought could be better. Some parts were very slow and could be shortened to make the pace flow better. I also felt the burgeoning relationship with Nick the carpenter could have had a little more pizzaz. Finally, the storyline around the unlikeable cousin Mark was just suddenly wrapped up at the end, so quickly that I had to scroll back to make sure I didn’t overlook something.
All in all, I enjoyed this sweet tale and would have probably given it four stars, but with the abrupt ending that threw me for a loop, I gave it three stars. I thank the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read it. #netgalley #AuntIvysCottage
Aunt Ivy’s cottage wasn’t really a cottage but a rambling old house that sounded amazing.
The description of the interior made me want to see it in person.
We meet Aunt Ivy, Aunt Sophie, Zoey, Mark, and Gabi. Aunt Sophie had just passed, Aunt Ivy still lived in the cottage, Zoey was there because she lost her job and was taking care of Aunt Sophie.
Mark was there because he was selfish and wanted to see what he could do about getting Aunt Ivy’s house and use it as an investment.
Gabi was there because her father needed someone to take care of her since he was in an alcohol rehabilitation center.
I liked all of the characters - well all except Mark - as we learn about their life and loyalty to family. Mark wasn’t loyal. Mark was only out to get what he could from the family and kept looking for something in the house.
There must be some secret in the family's past.
When Zoey finds something out, she knows it must be what Mark has been worried about anyone finding out.
AUNT IVY’S COTTAGE is a sweet read that will warm your heart because of the lovable characters and how they put family first.
If you need an uplifting read, this book will be perfect.
And look at that adorable cover. 5/5
This book was given to me for a tour by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
For anyone that enjoys a cozy, warmhearted, family centred, small town, beachside read...this is definitely the book to pick up.
This story checked all of the boxes for what I like to have in a cozy oceanside read. There was family, a beautiful setting and atmosphere that all tied into making this book have an emotional and meaningful storyline.
Although this novel is categorized as romance, I wouldn't say romance is the true proponent of the story (unless you are considering romance in the familial sense). This novel is much more focused on family relationships and that kind of love.
This story was beautiful and it evoked the perfect amount of emotion to truly appreciate the relationships involved.

Aunt Ivy's Cottage is the 2nd book in the Dune Island series. After reading the first book I expected the series to be a continuation of the characters introduced there but instead we have all new characters who are located in a different hamlet of Dune Island although three of the main characters of the first book do make a friendly appearance in this one. The plot line of this book too revolves around a family cottage and the hidden secrets it holds....secrets of love lost and gained, the question of paternity and who exactly is the true heir of the cottage. Again the the town, the cottage and it surroundings is beautifully described. There are a few touching and emotional moments but I felt the ending was a bit rushed...it was odd to see Mark come to terms with the truth so easily in the end since he, as the main antagonist, was hell bent on getting his hands on the cottage by any means up until the end of the book. Overall, I liked it but a little less than the first book in the series; however, I do look forward to seeing which hamlet and new characters the author brings to us in the next book.
P. S.: The cover is beautiful 💖.
My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture and the author Kristin Harper for the e-Arc of the book. The book was published on 7th December 2020.
This is my first read by this author and WOW there really is a lot going on. After her elderly relative's death our main character moves in with her elderly Aunt whom she had spent living summer's with her in her coastal home. Many wonderful memories abound and she knows it's the right thing to do living with her elderly aunt and caring for her. Her brother-in-law and his new wife send their child to live with her as well because she is getting into trouble at home. To add to the confusion her cousin is hanging around because he is convinced he'll inherit the house after his aunt's death. He doesn't truly care about the aunt just the money she can spend on him and his inheritance. Along with the aunt's deteriorating health some secrets come to see the light of day that change things in an unexpected way. Secrets have a way of coming unearthed when we least expect them to be. I really hated to see the drama being caused in this family dynamics and just hate how people seem to crawl out of the woodwork when money and inheritances are in the picture. The elderly aunt, Aunt Ivy is a sweetheart. I loved her character.

Aunt Ivy’s Cottage by Kristin Harper takes us to Dune Island where Zoey has experienced many happy memories. I thought the cover was just lovely for Aunt Ivy’s Cottage. The descriptions of the island and Aunt Ivy’s cottage are vivid. The author brought the scenery alive with her word imagery. There is a cast of characters with most of them related to Zoey. After the death of a close relative, Zoey stays on the island to take care of Aunt Ivy who is getting on in years. Zoey is then contacted by her niece’s stepmother. She would like to send Gabi, Zoey’s niece, to stay with Zoey with her while. She believes it is in the best interest of Gabi. Zoey is also dealing with the loss of a job and her cousin, Mark who is next in line to inherit the house. Mark would like his inheritance sooner rather than later and is trying to get Aunt Ivy to move into an assisted living facility. After a comment from a longtime island resident, Zoey begins to wonder if there is a secret that may help save Aunt Ivy’s home from Mark’s clutches. Aunt Ivy’s Cottage moved along at a meandering pace. The book needed action to help move it forward. The pace was very sluggish in places. The first paragraph of the blurb is completely inaccurate (finding a leatherbound diary in a trunk under a wedding dress). This paragraph is what made me pick up Aunt Ivy’s Cottage. My favorite characters are Aunt Ivy and Gabi. Aunt Ivy has a wealth of knowledge as well as family stories to share. Gabi is a teenager who lost her mother, her father has remarried—twice, and now her father is overindulging in alcohol. The poor girl has gone through a lot in her fourteen years. The mystery was not so mysterious. It is a cinch to figure out. The big “reveal” is a disappointment. I felt that one person’s reaction was dramatically understated. Based on how this character behaved throughout the book, I expected a big reaction and a dustup (there should have been fireworks). The scene was rushed, and I found it to be a disappointment. The romance between Nick, the local handyman/carpenter, and Zoey was okay. I did not feel any sparks between them. I like the premise for Aunt Ivy’s Cottage, but I feel the story needed a little more work. It needed continuity, action, and less focus on Zoey’s zigzagging emotions. I found much of Aunt Ivy’s Cottage to be gloomy. Death, grief, loss of job, and other topics are discussed along with the emotions. I wanted a heartwarming story, and I did not feel this met the mark. Aunt Ivy’s Cottage has a good premise but needs a little fine tuning (like fixing the inconsistencies). Aunt Ivy’s Cottage sweeps us away to a charming island where a family deals with two beloved relatives getting on in years and a long buried secret.
Grab a tub of cranberry-chocolate ice cream, a big spoon, and get comfortable because Kristin Harper is going to transport you to the windswept shores of Dune Island in, Aunt Ivy’s Cottage, to be published December 7th, 2020.
Having lost it all, Zoey escapes to her old family vacation home on a beautiful island off Cape Cod to seek healing. Not only has she been laid off her librarian job, but due to her ex-boyfriend’s poor financial advice, she’s lost her life savings and is on the brink of losing her townhouse. This coupled with the death of her parents and her older sister, has left Zoey emotionally drained. Quality time with Aunt Ivy is just what she needs. Unfortunately, her cousin Mark arrives and instantly clashes with Zoey over the extent of care 86 year old Ivy needs as well as the need for upgrading the Federal-style home built in the early 1800s. Suddenly, what was to be a soul-quenching stay ends up adding to her stress. Furthermore, she unwittingly discovers a secret that her great aunt meant to keep buried. Will this secret tear apart the family? Is Mark upgrading the cottage to sell it? Can this handyman be trusted? What connection does the cantankerous old lighthouse keeper have with the family?
It’s been a long time since I’ve been so emotionally invested in fictional characters. Harper has masterfully created such an immersive read with realistic and loveable characters. The depth of her descriptions not only gave me a feel for life in Cape Cod but also made me feel like I was a guest at Aunt Ivy’s, too. Harper loves to educate her readers and it’s obvious when Zoey explains ‘keeping rooms’ and ornate dentil molding to her niece, Gabi. I also appreciated the author’s sense of humour when she’s explaining why Mr. Wetherell only communicates through grunts and what the family did with teeth that fell out. Harper’s success I believe is due to spending so much time on Cape Cod as a child; she knows the quirks and perks of island living, the stunning sea views, unique architecture and the eccentric types of characters who live there.
At the core of Harper’s story is the value of family and what members are willing to do for each other. You’ll be reminded that sometimes what we seek isn’t necessarily what we need and that sometimes appearances are deceiving.
I truly was sad to flip over the last page of this delicious read.
Thank you, Kristin Harper, Bookouture and Netgalley for the advance copy in exchange for an honest opinion.
Families and hidden secrets were one of my most favorite tropes in fiction, after thrillers obviously. This book had them in plenty. Love for the elderly shone through, a fact I absolutely felt was so essential in today’s fast life. The author Kristin Harper captured that emotion in the words chosen in the story.
My first book by her, I respected the way Zoey loved her great-aunts and cared for them. Her grief in losing one of them was well depicted. On the other hand, Mark came across as the grubby, selfish man who wanted to send his great-aunt to the assisted living so that he could make use of the family home as a site to have weddings.
A secret in the attic caused the mystery to come into the open, and it was up to Zoey to deal with them. She was good in her relationship with her aunts. I loved how her protective nature for them leaped through the prose, but she was quite prone to heated emotions and instant mood change. But since I was like that in real life, I didn’t mind that. Her budding relationship with carpenter Nick seemed sweet. I was glad that the story was not romance-heavy.
I expected Mark to be a great antagonist, but he disappointed me. His section at the end was wrapped up too fast. That was a pity as he provided spice to the sweetened tale. The pace at times seemed too erratic, and all the characters could have been given greater depths so that they touched my and evoked my emotions, even anger.
Overall, a richly descriptive prose along with sensitive moments filled with emotions, love for the aunts made this a soothing read.
Originally published in December 2020, Aunt Ivy's Cottage is book two in the Dune Island Series. This time around Forever Publishing has changed up the cover art and this rerelease should also garner a few readers that missed it the first time around. I do love this type of sweet and comforting read.

*Thank you to Forever Publishing for sharing this title with me.
Just thinking about her great-aunt Ivy's cottage brings very warm feelings to Zoey. She couldn't have asked for better summers as a child. Ivy is not only up in years, her cottage is not in great shape. Zoey's cousin Mark wants Ivy moved into a nursing home and intends on selling the cottage. Not only is Zoey reluctant to have Ivy moved, she wants to make any necessary repairs on the cottage. She quickly discovers that she has an ally, Ivy's neighbor Nick, who is also a local carpenter.
Beyond that, as Zoey begins to examine the contents of the house, she discovers a connection to the past that just might change everything. Zoey hopes that Ivy can stay in the house, and does what she can to learn about a reclusive lighthouse keeper. All the while, she and Nick begin to grow fond of one another, which just might change her future as well.
As touching as this story was, there was a very unpleasant character, and that was Mark. His attitude towards Ivy and her heritage left a lot to be desired. This was very relatable because so many people today don't want to care for their older relatives. As venemous as he was, Zoey, Nick and Ivy gave the story levity, balancing out his character. Although the ending could have been fleshed out a bit more, it was an enjoyable story.
Many thanks to Forever and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
*I received this book as an Advanced Review Copy from NetGalley.
I dearly wish I could have liked this book. The premise sounded good, the cover is beautiful; unfortunately, I just had too many issues with the book that made me not enjoy it as much as I would have liked to.
Zoey has always loved her aunts and visiting with them. So when she has job and life troubles and an opportunity opens up for her to go care for one of them who is sick, she takes it. Unfortunately the sickness runs its course and she's left with only one aunt; who isn't in the best of shape herself. To make matters worse, she has a cousin poking and prodding at the remaining aunt to move out of the house he is to inherit so he can get in a little early, while all Zoey wants is for her aunt to be happy.
The characters are what I had the main problem with in the book. They all start out ok; but then have such drastic leaps and turns through the whole book that it rings as inauthentic. One character; who is presented a certain way through the whole book, magically seems to have a change of heart at the end and doesn't put up a fight in the way I thought would have been more realistic. Another goes hot and cold and seems to just be added drama rather than a meaningful add. I think about the only realistic one was the teenager, and even she had some crazy mood swings. While I think some is explainable by the themes of grief, hardship, etc.; there's just a lot of stuff that doesn't add up.
The premise is ok; I'm not sure what's going on with the book description because it's actually somewhat different than what really happens in the book (and that's all the further I'm going so I don't give out spoilers). While there's a lot of intrigue it kind of fizzles out at the end and everything wraps together a little too neatly.
Overall, charming setting, there was a scant mention of cranberry ice cream (the whole thing that made me read the book), and a nice cover; I just couldn't connect with the characters or appreciate them.
I enjoyed this fabulous new novel from author Kristin Harper for its heartwarming story, fun to read characters, and a story line and theme that resonated with me. Having to deal with aging parents, grandparents and a few aunts in the family connected me with this novel about about spending time with your loved ones, enjoying story time and reminiscing about the past. Just like in many families, we all have our stories that we keep quiet about, for fear of shame and other repercussion, only to find out that maybe honesty and openness would have also been a likely to change the course of events.
This story is about families, the discoveries of hidden stories, the relationships told in an emotional and also heartwarming story. The mystery element and the plot twist had me turning those pages and kept my interest in this amazing story. I loved the descriptions and the rich detail of Kristin's writing that is truly immersive. I also enjoyed everyone of the characters and Zoe's most especially.
This is definitely one to pick up if you enjoy cozy family stories set in the amazing and beautiful backdrop of cape Cod with a few mystery elements you will have a hard time putting down.
I had a great time reading this book. A new author for me that I definitely will be on my radar.
Firstly, I must warn potential readers that the blurb is very misleading. Zoey and Nick together do NOT find anything in the attic. Nor, does Zoey alone find anything of interest in the attic. Did the person who wrote the blurb actually read the book? OR, was the book edited since the blurb was written?
The setting was sublime. An island off the coast of Rhode Island with few year-round residents, but many seasonal property owners. Ivy's house was situated on a hill over-looking the harbor.
The characters were portrayed in a genuine way, so were easy to relate to.
The plot was a tad predictable, but when you read a book in this genre, you come to expect that - and perhaps welcome it.
This is women's fiction with more than a dash of romance. It is a story of family allegiances, family secrets, and inter-generational relationships that culminate in a 'happy ever after' ending. Recommended!
I can't deny that one of the attractions of reading Kristin Harper'sAunt Ivy's Cottage is the enchanting cover!
This was an engrossing and emotional slow-burn story, but the setting took centre stage for me. Set in a beautiful old house on Dune Island, Rhode Island, the gorgeous surroundings were so vividly described with the stunning sea views and unique architecture. I stayed for the duration, revelling in the great cast of characters, family drama and an enthralling mystery that grabbed me from the very beginning. I was sad to flip the last page of this delightful, moving story though there is another book set on the same island, called Summer at Hope Haven which I will definitely be checking out.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
#FirstLine - The daffodils that were meant to brighten the room were already going limp in their vase and Zoey Jansen felt as if she were wilting, too.
I loved this book. It was like a Hallmark movie in book form. It had all the staples of a great feel good read...a great setting, family dynamics and issues, romance, angst and a fulfilling, heartwarming and satisfying ending. This story made me miss my aunt and grandma. It made me grateful for the memories I have and things we were able to go together when they were alive. I loved this book and it made my heart super happy! It was just what I needed and I cannot wait to read the other book by this talented storyteller!!!
Aunt Ivy's Cottage by Kristin Harper is a beautiful family drama, love story, and a mystery that I really enjoyed reading. This is my first book by Ms. Harper, but it won't be my last. This book was easy to read and perfect for an escape from cold weather and the stress of life. I will be reading more books by this author, I highly recommend this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Absolutely loved this story. Island living in a family mansion which holds secrets to who really inherits the house. Zoey needs somewhere to live. One great aunt has passed and the other needs assistance as she is frail. Family drama and put it together and results in a wonderful storyline. Thankyou
Aunt Ivy’s Cottage is a heartwarming story about complicated family relationships, and long-buried secrets. Zoey returns to the house where her aunts live after losing her job, and along with taking care of them, she also becomes guardian of her troubled young niece. I enjoyed spending time with the characters in this book, as they overcame conflicts with love and understanding. The setting of this family drama was lovely, and the story is warm and uplifting. I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Maybe not quite a rating of 3. Fun summer read — with a predictable ending, but it did have a surprising twist to arrive there.
Between loosing her job and the recent breakup with her boyfriend, Zoey happily returns to Dune Island to help her aging aunts, Ivy and Sophie. The visit is marred by the frequent visits of her cousin Mark who will someday inherit the cottage. When Sophie passes away, Mark pushes Aunt Ivy to go into a nursing home — not even waiting for that he attempts to start renovating so that he can rent out the cottage.
The reader learns of the family history and family dynamics as Aunt Ivy recounts various events and relates her love story with captain Davey. Throughout the story there is the question of whether or not Mark is really the heir apparent. Also the frequent visits from the local handyman provide a romantic story line. Both of these plots provides some interesting twists!
This is book 2 in the Dune Island series and can be read as a stand alone book. Zoe loves Dune Island and has happy memories spending summers with her Aunt Ivy. Her cousin Mark is trying to get Aunt Ivy into a nursing home so he can sell the cottage he's to inherit. When Ivy dies, Zoe is to clean out the attic and all of Ivy's possessions. She comes across her Aunt's chest in the attic and discovers some family secrets that might make the cottage her own. I liked the story but I think things fell into place a little too easily. A little romance and some intrigue. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This is a sweet story of multiple generations helping each other out. The main character has been laid off from her library job, and her ex-boyfriend had given her poor investment advice so her savings are gone. As she is regrouping she goes to help support two elderly aunts, and is soon joined by her niece (the daughter of her late sister) who has been having problems at home. Also part of the dynamics is her cousin, who will inherit the house her aunts are living in, and is hoping to speed up his acquisition of the house by talking the last surviving aunt into moving into an assisted living facility. And then there's the handyman who is helping out the aunt with the house (or is he?) It's a good story with interesting characters.
I am a big fan of cozy family stories. Try including revealing a dark secret or two and I am hooked. Aunt Ivy's Cottage by Kristin Harper was all that. While the book delivered all it promised, I was a bit disappointed with its ending. Whenever I sit down to read the book I want the ending to be fitting length-wise. Please give me a solution worth the amount of time I put into reading the book. Unfortunately, while I loved the book, the setting, and the characters, the ending was rushed and to some extent, unbelievable.
Aunt Ivy's cottage is the story of Zoey who lost her job as well as her life savings shortly before she returned to Dune Island to live with her aunts. Ivy and Sylvia have spent nearly their whole life on the island and even more important, they stayed together when cruel destiny took both their husbands. Unfortunately, aunt Sylvia dies but not without foreshadowing a family secret on her deathbed. Now, Zoey has to take care of her grieving aunt, her rebellious niece, and her overreaching cousin while figuring out a solution to her problems.
I loved the fact that Zoey actually took her destiny into her own hands. I've read numerous books where the heroine is just waiting for someone to come and save her. She is also a torn character between her own wishes and finding the strength to conquer them while meeting her own expectations when it comes to caring for her family. I love her relationship with her aunt Ivy. Actually, all the characters in the book were well-writing and offered a lot of backstories. (Maybe exclude her cousin Mark. I was a little lost on his character) Reading about Ivy and how she manages to go on with her life after her lifelong companion left her made me teary sometimes but on the other hand, the book offers many feel-good scenes and highly emphasizes the importance of having family and friends.
The setting was gorgeous. The small island was easy to imagine and by now, I know there is another book set on the same island (Summer Hope Haven) which I will definitely check out. Being from a small village myself I can well imagine how fast rumors travel and how much they change over time because everyone is adding to them or leaving something out.
I was well-prepared to award the book 5 stars until its ending. I don't care much about its predictability but I was disappointed with its shortness. The book had a rather slow pacing that fitted the story well but the ending was rushed. Everything just resolved themself and the explanations given weren't too convincing.
All in all, a great read I am happy to have read the book and discovered a new author to watch for me.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
It was a nice story, but I must say: it had so much more potential. It just felt a bit sloppy or something? Something about the going back and forth on Nick being trustworthy or not. Mark being, well frankly, just bipolar? It made it hard to trust anyone. And Zoey was just like a leaf in the wind. Everything just kind off happened to here…
So yeah, it was fine, but it could have been so much better. I think three stars is rounded up..
This 2nd book was so much better than the 1st one!! A good storyline, likeable characters, and a lovely setting. What's not to like about a big house with a widow's walk, facing the water?? I'm so glad that the story ended the way I wanted it to!! 😊
I really liked this story of a family, and secrets. Set in a beach town, with beautiful descriptions of a home there and all kinds of interesting characters, especially Aunt Ivy. A touching read.
