The ultimate "not cheating, yet somehow worse than cheating" angst-fest.
After years away from romance and Goodreads itself, I finally picked up a book that reminded me why I fell in love with the genre in the first place.
I burned out on endless doormat heroines and double standards where the heroine is expected to remain untouched while the hero sleeps with half the population. After years of not reading romance at all, I read Bessa.
And wow.
I am a complete sucker for emotional, gutwrenching, relationship-in-trouble romances. I want a book to break my heart and then painstakingly put it back together. *Bessa* did exactly that.
This is, without question, one of my all-time favorite romance novels and my personal GOAT when it comes to strong heroines and GROVELING H. If you're looking for a detailed breakdown of the plot, read my Goodreads friend Raffaella's review, she explains the story far better than I could.
What made this book unforgettable for me was the heroine's pain. In most romances, forgiveness comes quickly ( basically when the H shows up hot, all is forgiven after 1 kiss). Not here. Bessa's heartbreak lingers on every page, and honestly, I understood every bit of it.
The central conflict is controversial and won't work for everyone. Before finding his mate, the hero fell deeply in love with another woman. In most romance novels, many readers wouldn't consider that cheating. But in this shifter world, where mates are sacred, it is a devastating betrayal. When Bessa finally allows herself to mark the Hero, she experiences his memories and emotions connected to that first love in vivid detail. She doesn't just know about the relationship, or hears from it from the H, she sees it. She relives every moment of it from the H's PoV in stark vivid color; she could smell and taste the other woman's P and A@@! She had to endure. She is literally watching a dirty porno between her mate and another woman whom he loved every night. The emotional devastation is absolute.
The result is one of the most painful portrayals of resentment, grief, jealousy, heartbreak, and PETTINESS that I've ever read in a romance novel.
What made Bessa's heartbreak feel so devastating was that she wasn't competing with a memory, she was living with a monument to another woman.
His entire body was a love story written for someone else.
The tattoos, the symbols, the traditions, the promises, the house he built for another woman, even the bead he wore in his hair, everywhere she looked were reminders that the deepest romantic gestures she longed for had already been given to another woman. Just imagine her heartbreak.
That was the genius of this story. It wasn't about infidelity. It was about being someone's fated mate while feeling like you were never the great love story they wanted.
This is not a book about easy forgiveness. It's about what happens after the damage is done.
The ending is more hopeful than traditionally romantic. The couple remains together, but she didn't forgive him but no longer hated him. They're raising their children and slowly rebuilding a relationship that was shattered before it ever had a chance to begin. It's a hard-earned HFN rather than a sweeping HEA.
And honestly? It felt real.
I've heard the couple eventually gets their true HEA in their son's book, where Bessa finally forgives him, but for me, *Bessa* itself was already unforgettable masterpiece.
If you love angst, emotional devastation, complicated relationships, and heroines who refuse to simply "get over it," I cannot recommend this book enough.

Years ago, before I took a long break from romance and Goodreads, I found a Reddit spoiler summary that convinced me to put this book on my TBR. Looking back after finally reading it, it's funny how accurate it was:
* This is a wolf-shifter world where mates are considered sacred.
* The hero is the future alpha and discovers his mate, Bessa, across the sea.
* When he brings her home, she realizes he has already given another woman nearly everything she dreamed of receiving from her mate: love, devotion, emotional intimacy, a home built for her, symbolic gifts, and a place in his heart.
* That relationship becomes the source of years of bitterness and heartbreak between Bessa and the H.
* Bessa refuses to forgive. She withholds affection, refuses his mark for years, and gives him only the smallest pieces of herself.
* The hero spends the entire book regretting his choices and accepting whatever scraps of kindness she is willing to offer.
*Best scene in the book: h chops off the OW's head, puts it on a spike and leaves it at the front door of their house so the H could watch birds eat it. He cries over it too, poor thing hahahaha. Then later, she gets a tattoo of the OW's head on a pike on her thighs, so every time they had sex, the H could "remember" his first love. She also named her daughter after the OW rofl! This is just a sample of how strong the h is. How vicious. How petty! LOVED her!
What fascinated me most and what ultimately made me read the book was that Bessa never simply "gets over it." Her pain, anger, and resentment have lasting consequences. The book allows her to be messy, bitter, unfair, broken, and human.
The ending is hopeful. She has stopped hating him. He did move back into the house. They're sleeping together, but she does not forgive until her son's book.
It's a hard earned HFN where two people slowly learn how to coexist after years of hurt, and somehow that made it even more powerful.
I am removing some spoilers from my previous self note. Comments from friends are about them. Before actually reading the book, the spoilers made it seem like he was cheating still, he was not or pining for the OW, he was not. Once he finds Bessa, he even forgets the OW's ( his great loves) face lol.

I must add another star because it is really amazing.
I know the grammar is not always perfect and it lacks of a proper editing but it is really strong and angsty.
I had the time to think about why I can't seem to stop re reading it, it is one of my favourite books lately.
The style is raw and almost gaunt, violent and lacking of finesse.
But it is perfect for what it represents.
The world where Bessa lives, a world made of werewolves, where human and wild live together united in the most basic sense, is just like that.
Savage.
Hard.
Merciless.
Bloodthirsty.
Why does the style have to be different?
Why should it be elegant, refined, wordy?
It's the exactly right style for this kind of world.
And the world is perfect. Not to evolved, not to human. There's much savagery in it, like in an imaginary primitive world, where beast and human live together.
And the style is perfect for Bessa, who is an extreme creature, she doesn't have filters or half measures. She feels in terms of absolutes.
And her pain for her mate's betrayal is absolute and not forgivable not forgettable.
This book is an experience that I loved to make.
On Radish there's a more correct version for those who love it.
But it lacks the final chapter with hero's POV.
I so hope the author will write other chapters with hero's POV.
To understand and appreciate this book you have to remember that what is ordinary and right and normal is not always interesting.
And Art is never ordinary.
This is one of those cases where a rare talent with emotions is expressed. Words are emotions and emotions are felt in body and heart and mind.
It is amazing.
Well what can I say.
This woman can hold a grudge better than Medea when she killed her sons to spite her ex who left her to marry another woman.
Jeez that was hard and painful to read!
It was a surprise for me since I’ve never read anything of this author.
The book is dark, gothic, savage and sometimes gory.
I loved the setting, it looks like a dystopian world where people live like primitives, there are some inconsistencies in it because they have no lights, only candles and only fire as heating but there’s a reference to trucks that I don’t really know what kind of fuel are using. It seems like there are only shifters in this world, wolves of course if you have some doubts about it.
The book describes the story of the hero who’s been in love with his dead brother’s mate for some years. He has a duty to find his mate and when he finds her it all goes shit.
Because his mate is hard and fierce and she saved herself thinking only of her future mate so when she finds out he’s been in love with another woman and wanted her to be his mate she basically turns into a rabid pit bull under drugs.
She destroys his house, she kills the woman and other women who are her possible substitute, she treats him like dirt.
And she goes on and on and on punishing him and telling what a shitty man he is and how she dreams she will fall in love with another man, a real one.
Really, I’ve never seen a man taking so much shit without blinking an eye.
And let me tell you, in some parts I’ve had the impression that she was the male and he the female.
An alpha this man? Not at all.
He’s always whining and whimpering and saying sorry that at a certain point I wanted to yell hey man, stand up and be a man instead of taking shit, admitting your guilt and letting her rage go ott each and every time.
Yes, it’s a wolf shifters book so the behavior of those characters is very much influenced by their double nature, man and wolf, that is their jealousy, possessiveness, sense of belonging is different from humans.
Because after all, what is his great fault? He never found his mate even if he tried to, when he found her it was his last attempt. But in the meantime he fell in love with a woman.
It happens. It’s not as if he knew the heroine, it’s not even as if he knew he would find his mate so what should he have done?
As soon as he met the heroine he decided he would break with ow, so he was never unfaithful to her, and I don’t think it can be reasonable to think he should have stopped loving ow immediately and fall for the heroine as soon as he saw her.
We know he had very strong feelings for her that he never had for ow but it would be not so nice for him to jump from ow to the heroine without a thought.
And after all ow was not an evil or bad character. She fell for the hero and for some time they were quite content together.
What I didn’t like is that he doesn’t seem a very alpha male.
His actions are often dictated by impulsiveness, as when he made many tattoos that reminded him of her, knowing she was not his mate.
This is a behavior of a hormonal teenager not of a male in charge of a pack of wolves.
He could have avoided som things he did with ow.
Then again. He has not the least diplomacy when answering the heroine’s nosy questions about ow.
He should learn from some hp heroes who are well versed with the art of making up excuses for their most appalling behaviors. Hero, alpha you are not, confessing to the heroine how much you loved ow and how much you wanted a home, children and everything else with her! To a savage and brutal woman who gives jealousy another meaning???
Who will make her life goal to debase, humiliate, torture and scorn you?
Yes, it’s true that those creatures when mated will know the inner thoughts of their mates, so he would not be able to hide his thoughts from her but maybe- maybe- try to soften the blow with some platitudes.
Nope, this man is a real pussy.
And the heroine.
Oh the heroine is the cruelest, most hard hearted, resentful creature ever seen in a romance.
And you live, breath and eat her pain.
Her suffering.
Her hurt feelings.
The language is basic but very very physical.
You feel in your body what the heroine experiences knowing her fated mate betrayed her and gave another woman what was rightful hers.
And you feel, live and breath what her mate suffers when he understands his big huge mistake.
This is a book about how one act made without proper consideration for its consequences can lead to ruin one’s life.
But it’s also a book about how if you can’t let go of the past you cab ruin your entire life.
I felt pity for the heroine.
After all, she damned herself.
No one can hurt you emotionally if you don’t give him the power to do it.
And she gave him every power, even when his mistake was made without the intention of hurting her.
So in one way she was the cause of her unhappiness.
She should have let it go, what he did in his past, before meeting her, shouldn’t have affected her so much.
The end is bittersweet, she can’t forgive him but most of all she can’t let go and so ow wins, because even if she was dead she was always and would always be between them.
I liked the drama, the ott, the too much in it.
Some orthographic mistakes and some lack of editing are the reason why I don’t give more. But the style is new, raw, unadorned and somehow original.
I like the dystopian set.
I like the strong and bad heroine, mean and jealous and unforgiving. A far cry from spineless women who takes every shit the hero gives them and say thank you.
A compelling reading that I couldn’t put down.
I think I’ll read more of this author.

i will forever hate the day i picked up this book, i hated how OW and MMCs perverted sex acts were described how he was lovin/lusting after the OW (it gave me great pleasure how fmc put ow's head at spike, and till the end she hated the mmc). ( She doesn't just know about the relationship, or hears from it from the H, she sees it. She relives every moment of it from the H's PoV in stark vivid color; she could smell and taste the other woman's P and A@@! She had to endure. I'm so torn on this story. The angst was epic. Truly the devastating kind of angst I thrive on in most other stories. Bessa's story was the most gut wrenching, devastating, and heart breaking angst I have ever read in a story before. There is no doubt that Rachelle Mills is a phenomenal story weaver. I completely sympathized with Bessa's horrific predicament discovering her mate had already fallen deeply and hopelessly in love with another woman. The experience was devastatingly emotional. And I supported Bessa's actions towards this woman too (quite honestly it was badass as hell). Bessa refused to give her mate an inch though. EVER. She wallowed in her misery and decided she would make everyone around her miserable too, but especially her mate.
I got all of the angst I crave in stories in spades, but apparently I do need a bit of happiness somewhere in the story to balance out the devastation.

Not a romance. I repeat, not a romance. It’s ultimately the tale of a ferocious woman who has been wronged by her fated mate. She tortures him psychologically for years.
The h is riveting in her fury. She’s relentless. Her need for vengeance and justice defines her. It’s really messed up and probably would depress most people. However, if you’re tired of doormats and you really would like to see someone take it to the limit, this is your book.

I read this on a whim on Wattpad. I don’t read a lot of books on there and if I do I don’t count them on GR. This is quite a long read and unlike most Wattpad stories I’ve read I think this one will stick in my head but not really in a good way.
I’m not a big angst reader (one of reasons I don’t consume much on Wattpad), there are certain flavors of angst I really hate and others that I’m ok with. This one turns out to be one I don’t like but every now and again I want the emotional release this type of angst usually provides.
Bessa is the wronged party in this story. Her fated mate loves another. His dead brothers wife. He was sworn to provide for her after his brothers death only this pack of wolves has some odd rules that don’t make sense. He’s assigned 4 women as backup breeders if his Nate can’t provide an heir. His dead brothers wife is his primary bitch. He’s not allowed to touch any female but his mother, sisters, grandmother and wife. So he’s never touched her. But he’s in love with her and they’ve done everything but touch. See. He’s a selfish piece of shit.
For reasons I don’t quite understand he decides to go and get his fated mate who lives far away from where he lives. It’s all downhill from there. He instantly regrets his foolishness with dead brothers wife but it’s too late. And he’s apparently still in love with her. Lovely, right?
So Bessa is devastated. Lots of very angsty things happen. Dead brothers wife and other 3 backup breeders are killed at Bessa’s hand and are never replaced. This happens long before they even mate so like what was the point in first place??
Bessa is not a pushover. She doesn’t let up or ever forgive him. She does her duty and eventually finds a modicum of happiness. But she never forgets. Ever.
If you need a happy ending, stop reading after she tells him she’s going to try to be happy again. It’s good for a minute after that but then we’re back to all bad again.
Here’s the thing, I think, in the name of angst and conflict, authors have H behave badly. Different authors, different stories and different levels of bad. I’m vengeful I’m hard to please when it comes to having H grovel enough for forgiveness. Most books don’t even come close. Some almost get there and a handful of those make it.
In the end here, it’s not H being punished. Oh, no, he is being punished. But Bessa ends up punished more and worst of all it’s by herself. Short of a time machine there’s nothing he could do to fix what he did. So he was bad, he suffers, and she suffers looooooooong after because long after he stops thinking of dead brothers wife she won’t let her die, even though she killed her. She lives in their life because of Bessa, at that point.
This is misery porn for people who want to see heroines never find happiness. For a real HEA here, Bessa needed to find away to let go of dead brothers wife but she didn’t want to do she suffers to make him suffer.
For a satisfying HEA she should find true happiness while he can’t quite ever get there. Never having dead brothers wife or Bessa. She should have killed her, castrated him and went back home to find love without him while got neither dead bitch or his mate. Bessa has everything without him, H suffers the rest of his life and dies alone.
Now, I feel better. Do yourself a favor and skip this unless you want misery porn for people who hate heroines and don’t want them to ever be happy.

Even when i pray for the FMC to be better and leave the MMC but when they don't, i expect them to move on from their pain after the revenge, atleast. Bessa didn't.
She's bitter. Some other day I might have said it was a spine of steel. Not today.
The betrayal was cruel and she was cruel in return. It was an eye for an eye situation. No one wins here. Not even love.

So many typos but SUCH EXQUISITE ANGST. Every chapter is a bruising gut punch. Rachelle mills writing is some of my favorite. She’s just such a talented story teller. My heart broke for Bessa again and again and AGAIN (FFS, Savage!). What a queen she was.

Still haven't read a better story than this.
I think I read this on the radish app? I hope/pray this book gets published to Kindle Unlimited so that I can read it again. I have yet to read anything as compelling as Bessa. Maybe because it isn't a clear cut HEA. But I think the universe & culture developed is the best there is.
There's werewolf hierarchy, mating rituals, and a village dynamic like vikings. I read Odin's prize after this and the contrast of these two FMC was incredible side by side.

Introduction/ My Ramblings
Pheeewwww. This will be a long rambling review so I can get my thoughts out but also to remind myself of what happens for when I decide to read the next books in the series. Rachelle Mills is a writer that really knows how to transport you into another world. This book was a gut punch. If you’re looking for a full reconciliation for this couple, it doesn’t happen in this story 👀👀 (see last paragraph). This story is more of a “you reap what you sow” type of thing. I like Bessa (the heroine) even though she was self inflicting her own misery for far too long, and eventually grew to like Borson (the hero) even though I wanted to skin him alive for the majority of the story. I have to be honest, I didn’t read the story in its intended order. I read most of Borson’s pov’s first, which I believe are the hardest to get through. His PoV chapters start somewhere around 75% of the story and the last few are bonus chapters at the end. However, they are all set at the start of the story, before and a little after he meets Bessa. These are the hardest to read because he’s still with Elska (the other woman) or has just ended it, so we get the displeasure of going through all his emotions with him - memories, yearning, guilt, despair 😩. If you know anything about this author, you know she knows how to write about yearning and despair 💀. I also read the 2 bonus chapters on Rachel Mills website. I recommend joining if you are a fan of her works! I’m hoping there will be more chapters of Borson’s pov for later parts of the story.
The story
The story is told in mostly Bessa’s pov. Bessa is a female wolf living with her pack in the dunes of the south (very Arabian like culture) and dreams of meeting her mate, which her pack has been preparing her for since she was born. Borson is the soon to be Alpha of his pack in the Far North and wants to settle down with the woman he loves, Elska… his dead brother’s mate. He’s sent by his father to find his true mate which he reluctantly agrees to. He’s horrified when he realises the mate bond is stronger than he anticipated and he must now deal with the betrayal he has caused by giving another female what is rightfully Bessa’s. Their differing values, his grieving for his lost love and the constant reminders of his betrayal causes contention in their union. Bessa kills Elska early on because she kept begging Borson to be with her and she started to challenge Bessa who is the future Luna. Still, after her death, Bessa will not stop questioning him about his time with Elska and threatens that she will never forget and will make sure that he doesn’t either. She also says she will only ever be a breeder for him because he gave everything else to Elska. The questions are brutal but the truthful answers are even worse. Borson’s pack have a rule that you’re not allowed to touch someone who isn’t your mate or family and Borson (and his family) keep using the excuse that he “never touched her” (Elska) to exonerate him. But they used all of their other senses on each other 🤮 (I had to skip a lot of stuff here) and were basically building a life together, as evident with the tattoos on him. Once on the other side of his grief (about half way through the book), Borson is full of shame and regret but finds that he may never be able to make amends for the sins of his past. They constantly take 1 step forward then 2 steps back when something new is discovered about Borson’s past. There is also stuff happening within their pack and the other packs in the area (Fin, Victoria, Gray and Meela from the other books are in the neighbouring packs) that make this story interesting. Borson’s pack think they are better than the others because they “follow the old ways” but they’re hypocrites. They judge people from other packs for doing things that they let Borson use loopholes to accomplish. Bessa publicly shames them for their hypocrisy. The marking ceremony marks a major change for Borson as the full realisation of just how bad he messed up is revealed when he gets all of Bessa’s thoughts and memories. Bessa punishes him at every turn but is also punishing herself as a result. As time goes by, things start looking up and Bessa learns to forgive while they build a family. But it all comes crashing down when Bessa is forced to mark Borson to save her daughter’s life. By doing so, she gets all of Borson’s memories too. Everything comes crashing down. Bessa constantly relives memory after memory of Borson and Elska. This part was DEPRESSING. She gets in such a state that she abandons her children and they don’t want to be around her. Borson has to check her after months of this neglect. He is also suffering and when he sees just how bad Bassa is doing, he decides to move out to give her space. They live apart for years and I have a suspicion that Borson didn’t have a home to go to. He loses so much weight but still gives everything he has to his family. He never pushes Bessa to do anything she doesn’t want to. He’s patient and takes whatever scraps she will throw his way. Slowly, Bessa starts to see good memories of how much he loves her. Of how the love he had for Elska doesn’t come close to what he feels for her. They become friends. Then she lets him move back in so they can be friends and raise their children together with some (what she calls) “weak moments” where they’re more than friends.
Final thoughts
Borson was a major fool for discounting his mate before even laying eyes on her and preparing to build a life around another woman, and then setting off to find a mate when he had no intentions or desire to be with her. Even more of a fool to tell the ow they could finally be together when he gets back from his search, believing he wouldn’t find his mate. He made countless mistakes after he found Bessa, like moving her into a house built for another woman, causing her to destroy everything, which leads to their starvation. But my biggest issue with him is that he forced Bessa to live with him while he mourned Elska. I understand the pull of the mate bond and his wolf probably wouldn’t have allowed her to leave, but how dare he try to get close with Bessa while he was still reliving memories of Elska. The killing of Elska immortalised her in his eyes making him mourn her for far too long, while Bessa feels everything he feels as well as her own pain for the betrayal. That would harden anyone but especially someone who waited and prepared themself for you all their life. It’s no wonder she didn’t believe him when he did finally get over Elska and regret his actions. I’ve seen some people say that if Elska lived, Borson would still love her, but I disagree. Borson started falling in love with Bessa because of her strength and how she protected the weak females in the pack. He boasts about her accomplishments and what a great Luna she is. He is proud of her. He admits that Elska was weak and was involved in the bullying of the despised females of his pack (bonus chapters on the website). She was also vindictive and caused a rift between him and his brother. He would have had a rude awakening had Elska been made Luna, and that kind of thing is important in their world.
As previously stated, I purposely read Borson’s pov’s first, as they’re all set in the first part of the story and I didn’t want to forgive him and then go backwards when they’re revealed in later chapters, after he was over Elska. I give him some props because he at least CHOSE Bessa and rejected Elska when she was still alive. He could have easily rejected Bessa (like Finn did to Victoria) and gone back without her, but he chose to do the right thing and discontinue his relationship with Elska. Yes he’s a major idiot but he learned his lesson the hard way. He watched the woman he loved at the time get beheaded and have her head put on a pike outside his house (in the beginning a constant reminder of his lost love’s death being on his hands, then later a constant reminder of his shame). But the true gut wrenching suffering begins after the marking ceremony where he gets access to all of Bessa’s thoughts and memories so he can see everything she did to prepare for him, her heartbreak and her disgust of him now. Bessa reminds me of Victoria in that they both give the most delicious set downs to make their adversaries feel all the shame in the world 😂. And there are a LOT of set downs to go around. I have so much empathy for Bessa because all her dreams are shattered when she meets Borson. He didn’t prepare her for what she was walking into and she even tried to run from him when they first met. I understand her rejection of him in the beginning and middle. Even those few months after she unlocked his memories. But at some point you have to remember that it has been YEARS! Elska is gone and the only one keeping her alive now is Bessa. Borson couldn’t care less about her. By continuing down this road, she’d be letting Elska win. I’m glad she at least was able to live side by side with him by the end and they can have a good friendship (with “weak moments”).
⚠️ Spoilers for Bessa and Borson in Odin’s Prize and The Blood Red Path ⚠️
I haven’t read these books, I just needed to know how this couple turns out so I dug through the trenches to find these little tidbits of them. On the last chapter of OP when intense things are happening, Borson tells Bessa how much he loves her and she’s the only one in his heart and she confesses to loving him all these years, she just couldn’t let “her” go. Then she holds him in her arms. They are also shown giving each other affection in TBRP 🥺. It might have taken them a million years and some serious life struggles but they eventually got there. I’ll take it 😅. Rachelle Mills also confirmed their reconciliation in the comments. I have to say though, Borson doesn’t appear to be a very likeable character in those books (for other reasons) so read at your own discretion.
UPDATE after reading Grey’s Tribute, rereading Fin’s Claim and going through more of The Blood Red Path *** more spoilerrsss*** Their happy ending is short lived, both die in the war, along with a bunch of other beloved characters. TBRP is also still unfinished as of 1st Jun 2025 yet it was started in 2019. It feels like the author is done with these characters and is getting rid of them one by one. There are currently 26 chapters up, so unless a miracle happens (which isn’t a stretch in that universe) I don’t see there being a good ending for the first generation characters. Of the new generation, only Thomas’s twin’s story interests me and those are only available on the author’s website when you sign up. Maybe if I check back in 3 years I’ll have a definitive answer 🥴😩.
Further Update: The Blood Red Path was finished in December 2025. Both Bessa and Borson remain dead and it was an off scene death, though very heroic as Bessa took a hit intended for Meela (who I still hate). I’m hoping we get more details, either from the Intersection chapters on the website, in their children’s stories or bonus Borson chapters. What we know is that they are happy together in the next world but I wanted to see a reunion with Borson, his brother and Elska lol. Unfortunately, I was told that everything is hunky dory on the other side, apparently, so no juicy paybacks.

Bessa constantly relives memory after memory of Borson and Elska. This part was DEPRESSING. She gets in such a state that she abandons her children and they don’t want to be around her. Borson has to check her after months of this neglect. He is also suffering and when he sees just how bad Bassa is doing, he decides to move out to give her space. They live apart for years and I have a suspicion that Borson didn’t have a home to go to. He loses so much weight but still gives everything he has to his family. He never pushes Bessa to do anything she doesn’t want to. He’s patient and takes whatever scraps she will throw his way. Slowly, Bessa starts to see good memories of how much he loves her. Of how the love he had for Elska doesn’t come close to what he feels for her. They become friends. Then she lets him move back in so they can be friends and raise their children together with some (what she calls) “weak moments” where they’re more than friends.
Final thoughts
Borson was a major fool for discounting his mate before even laying eyes on her and preparing to build a life around another woman, and then setting off to find a mate when he had no intentions or desire to be with her. Even more of a fool to tell the ow they could finally be together when he gets back from his search, believing he wouldn’t find his mate. He made countless mistakes after he found Bessa, like moving her into a house built for another woman, causing her to destroy everything, which leads to their starvation. But my biggest issue with him is that he forced Bessa to live with him while he mourned Elska. I understand the pull of the mate bond and his wolf probably wouldn’t have allowed her to leave, but how dare he try to get close with Bessa while he was still reliving memories of Elska. The killing of Elska immortalised her in his eyes making him mourn her for far too long, while Bessa feels everything he feels as well as her own pain for the betrayal. That would harden anyone but especially someone who waited and prepared themself for you all their life. It’s no wonder she didn’t believe him when he did finally get over Elska and regret his actions. I’ve seen some people say that if Elska lived, Borson would still love her, but I disagree. Borson started falling in love with Bessa because of her strength and how she protected the weak females in the pack. He boasts about her accomplishments and what a great Luna she is. He is proud of her. He admits that Elska was weak and was involved in the bullying of the despised females of his pack (bonus chapters on the website). She was also vindictive and caused a rift between him and his brother. He would have had a rude awakening had Elska been made Luna, and that kind of thing is important in their world.
As previously stated, I purposely read Borson’s pov’s first, as they’re all set in the first part of the story and I didn’t want to forgive him and then go backwards when they’re revealed in later chapters, after he was over Elska. I give him some props because he at least CHOSE Bessa and rejected Elska when she was still alive. He could have easily rejected Bessa (like Finn did to Victoria) and gone back without her, but he chose to do the right thing and discontinue his relationship with Elska. Yes he’s a major idiot but he learned his lesson the hard way. He watched the woman he loved at the time get beheaded and have her head put on a pike outside his house (in the beginning a constant reminder of his lost love’s death being on his hands, then later a constant reminder of his shame). But the true gut wrenching suffering begins after the marking ceremony where he gets access to all of Bessa’s thoughts and memories so he can see everything she did to prepare for him, her heartbreak and her disgust of him now. Bessa reminds me of Victoria in that they both give the most delicious set downs to make their adversaries feel all the shame in the world 😂. And there are a LOT of set downs to go around. I have so much empathy for Bessa because all her dreams are shattered when she meets Borson. He didn’t prepare her for what she was walking into and she even tried to run from him when they first met. I understand her rejection of him in the beginning and middle. Even those few months after she unlocked his memories. But at some point you have to remember that it has been YEARS! Elska is gone and the only one keeping her alive now is Bessa. Borson couldn’t care less about her. By continuing down this road, she’d be letting Elska win. I’m glad she at least was able to live side by side with him by the end and they can have a good friendship (with “weak moments”).

I haven’t read these books, I just needed to know how this couple turns out so I dug through the trenches to find these little tidbits of them. On the last chapter of OP when intense things are happening, Borson tells Bessa how much he loves her and she’s the only one in his heart and she confesses to loving him all these years, she just couldn’t let “her” go. Then she holds him in her arms. They are also shown giving each other affection in TBRP 🥺. It might have taken them a million years and some serious life struggles but they eventually got there. I’ll take it 😅. Rachelle Mills also confirmed their reconciliation in the comments. I have to say though, Borson doesn’t appear to be a very likeable character in those books (for other reasons) so read at your own discretion.
UPDATE after reading Grey’s Tribute, rereading Fin’s Claim and going through more of The Blood Red Path *** more spoilerrsss*** Their happy ending is short lived, both die in the war, along with a bunch of other beloved characters. TBRP is also still unfinished as of 1st Jun 2025 yet it was started in 2019. It feels like the author is done with these characters and is getting rid of them one by one. There are currently 26 chapters up, so unless a miracle happens (which isn’t a stretch in that universe) I don’t see there being a good ending for the first generation characters. Of the new generation, only Thomas’s twin’s story interests me and those are only available on the author’s website when you sign up. Maybe if I check back in 3 years I’ll have a definitive answer 🥴😩.
Further Update: The Blood Red Path was finished in December 2025. Both Bessa and Borson remain dead and it was an off scene death, though very heroic as Bessa took a hit intended for Meela (who I still hate). I’m hoping we get more details, either from the Intersection chapters on the website, in their children’s stories or bonus Borson chapters. What we know is that they are happy together in the next world but I wanted to see a reunion with Borson, his brother and Elska lol. Unfortunately, I was told that everything is hunky dory on the other side, apparently, so no juicy paybacks.

Angst! Poor Bessa, poor Savage. I liked the epilogue which acknowledged that Bessa had a monster in her which wouldn’t let her forgive. Her loss! This book didn’t have a HEA. If you like angst, grovel, frustration, and gore with no HEA, this is your book!

Well Nikki, I dedicate this review to you. And oh man was this a doozy. I mean, I understand now that when I read anything written by Rachelle I better be ready for the heartache and soul crushing plot because this right here tore out my soul. I definitely do not regret reading this, but I'm not sure when I'll pick it up for a reread anytime soon. There are reviews out there that go into the storyline and to be honest I'm too exhausted to be thorough. My apologies. If you read it you'll understand. Just think fated mates, but one mate didn't wait for you. He may not have physically touched Elska, but they got off watching one another and exchanged body fluids. This book will make you rage and cry at the same time. And Bessa... oh my dear Bessa. I was totally ok with her attitude and violence. You've never seen a shifter scorned until you see Bessa. I was so happy she started killing all the females. I'm sorry, but I hold a mean grudge. Don't go into this book thinking you're going to get this beautiful HEA. You're going to get HFN and that's all. Bessa never seems to grow, while Borson grows tremendously. I honestly have conflicted feelings. So Rachelle. If by chance you read this review I'm begging you for more. Please I need an extended story about these two. I feel incomplete. 😂🙈
I want to add one thing. I was given advice to read Borson's POV from the end of the book, during a certain scene. And thank you for the person on Facebook. Reading his POV right after that scene of Bessa's uncomfortable questioning was the right thing to do. I swear if I had read that at the very end I would have been pissed all over again 😂 But you're still going to get the raw version of Borson's POV and his feelings and memories in the end for the ow. It's heartbreaking. But he doesn't feel that way towards her anymore.
Last thing. I really hope Rachelle get's published more because she's an incredible story creator. I'm not sure how she writes these heart wrenching books without crying rivers or getting pissed off at her characters. It's gotta be a talent seriously

He comes from a strict pack where they save themselves for their mates however he looks for his mate everywhere but no luck so he ends up falling in love with someone else who happens to be one of the main breeders for the alpha ( they choose three women as breeders for the alpha in case his mate isn't able to produce a child ) and the alpha have to provide for these breeders according to their traditions , this particular breeder happens to be his dead brother's mate ( his brother died long ago and his mate wasn't shifted yet to even know what a mate bond is ) anyways he falls in love with her than later finds his mate
His mate happens to be from a strict pack as well and she expected her mate to be just like her she never thought of the possibility that her mate could be from a non strict pack who allows relationships and sexual relationships with others who aren't their mates for example so when she comes to her mate's pack and finds out about his non sexual relationship with the breeder she loses her shit kills the breeder and becomes pity as hell than after a long time she forgives her mate and move on that is until she markes her mate and starts seeing his memoirs than Boom back to square one with her endless pityness only for her to turn to a complete hypocrit by becoming just like the breeder and falls in love with her mate's brother who happens to have a mate himself but she doesn't care she even tell her mate if you want me to forgive you than let me sleep with your brother!!!! She even tells her mate I with you'd just die
She keeps hating on him because of his past relationship even the she admits at one point of the story that she would've gladly had sex with other alpha ( Fin ) if she was from a different pack
Anyways just like Victoria she keeps milking that shit for years before she forgave him
A man who made a mistake and a woman who keeps punishing him for his mistake for the rest of his life
She's an extremely glorified toxic character that i absolutely hated but it's a good book and really good writhing

Wow. This was horrible lmao. I hated Bronson. Just when I thought Bessa was being a bit too harsh with him, we got his POV and wow... a male's POV has never made me hate them 10x more before so that was new.
The writing style was... weird. I get that the setting was supposed to be some dystopian, futuristic world but the stunted way the characters spoke just really took me out of the story and seemed very unrealistic. And there was waaay too much dialogue and barely any internal monologue so this made it hard to connect to the characters. It almost felt like I was reading a play.
Only reason I'm not giving this 1 star is because I actually felt compelled to finish most of it.

Read on Wattpad, omg this tore my heart out, but is was so good. You can feel all the emotions the characters feel and to me that make an excellent book. I just hope one day she puts this one on Amazon so I can buy it.

Reading from Wattpad.
This is the first book that I’m rating 5stars but putting on can’t rate shelf.
Cause I have so many mixed feelings over it so literally can’t rate but I know 5stars would help the author and this deserves it.
I can’t, won’t analize my thoughts over this too deeply.(In a row after Still breathing!)
It was unique, outstanding, phenomenal, RAW and emotional.
All of the characters was frustrating, petty hipocrites. And I understood them. Ugh.
Ending was not as I hoped but I think it was a good one, real one.
It was sure as hell a unforgettable story.

I've read this on Wattpad ages ago in an impulse. At first, I was enticed about the premise, but later to the story, this made me want to tear my hair and set my phone on fire. Plucking my eyebrows one by one would be less painful than reading this. I SUFFERED lol. I don't know why I even hoped for character development arc or redemption. Its just... they were 'trying' so hard but it's painfullly obvious that the two of them are unfit puzzle pieces. Remembering this book from time to time really causes me physical stress.

Well Bessa is a woman who can hold a grudge.
I couldn't carry on reading this, I got halfway and I just had to know if they ever get past her grudge, her jealousy, but apparently she doesn't.
It was just too much, the constant questions the emotional cruelty. If there would have been a good ending I would have continued and praised this book, but constant misery with a miserable ending nope I have better things to do. I read for my enjoyment not to feel miserable with no hope.

This book, although not a literary masterpiece or particularly well written, powerfully conveys betrayal and frustration—both from the perspective of the female lead and the male character. I don’t think I had ever felt such repulsion toward a character before. In a world built on the idea that every person is born with a destined partner, it is shocking how he could betray his mate—the one who had always existed for him, the blessing he was supposed to cherish. He betrays all that trust and love with someone who would inevitably remain in his life, a memory that could never be erased.
What makes it worse is that he knows that if he ever finds his true mate, she will be able to see all his memories and feel everything he has felt. And yet, instead of avoiding the betrayal, he chooses it—later refusing to even seek her out, because finding her would mean exposing everything. He convinces himself that his fantasy is perfect. But what struck me the most was the contradiction: he belongs to a system of beliefs that he openly betrays, and then he forces this woman—who has been raised her entire life to be his partner—to stay by his side without a choice. He doesn’t even give her the dignity of consent.
When they finally reunite, she realizes on her own that he has been unfaithful, and yet he insists that he doesn’t know how to stop loving the other woman. He speaks with a kind of brutal honesty, but it is not real integrity—it is carelessness. He wounds her because he cannot be bothered to consider her emotions. It feels raw and cruel, as if he never truly puts himself in her place. Even in the bonus chapters, when tragedy strikes and the other woman diesfor disrespectinghis mate, his thoughts remain self-centered: How will I go on? How do I live in this emptiness?—while ignoring the depth of what he destroyed.
What frustrates me is that he knows she is his perfect match, the love of his life, yet he never even tries to see her or love her. At first, I wondered if forgiveness might be possible. But as the story became more explicit—showing her pain through her own perspective—I realized that I, too, would find it impossible to forgive. The rage I felt while reading was overwhelming. He never once seemed happy to have found her, while she was forced into a life she never wanted—bearing children, living in a house built with memories of another woman, and enduring a future defined by someone else’s betrayal.
The system of beliefs in this world makes it even more tragic: they are meant to reunite in the afterlife, on the moon, carrying all the knowledge of what was done. That means his wife, his true mate, will always know he loved someone else more. The pain of that permanence is unbearable. Found this gem in Wattpad & couldn't put it down.
Man...this book made me all messed up, I felt emotional distress at times too, but loved it all the same.
I think this was one of the werewolf books which had a brilliant world building that sucked me into its layers & incredible also at times hypocritical pack dynamics.
🔹Bessa was the queen of this book whom you'll either fall in love with or hate her due to her attitude at times, but again you certainly can't see any strong, fierce, petty, stubborn female than her. I loved her immediately from the start to the end of the story, I just became her cheerleader.
🔹But Borson ....ugh I was his number 1 hater. Yes, he was a good provider, patient, & a even great father, but alas none of his good features could overshadow his betrayal, his love for his EX(ow). I just couldn't forgive him. I know many of the readers may differ from me, and side with him but it's my opinion, 𝐈'𝐦 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐛𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚.
🔹And Luki my god I absolutely adored him and I still wish Bessa somehow ended up with him.

The writing was simply superb....at first it was hard to understand or get along with the story, but after that little bout it just hooks you in and makes you get addicted.
The whole story was hyped up with emotions, drama, love, pain, betrayal, acceptance, memories...my god those F ing memories will tear you down and make you a raging inferno just like I did.
The ending was such a bittersweet one, but ℴ𝒽 𝓈ℴ 𝓇ℯ𝒶𝓁, 𝒾𝓉 𝒸𝒶𝓃'𝓉 ℊℯ𝓉 𝒶𝓃𝓎𝓂ℴ𝓇ℯ 𝓇ℯ𝒶𝓁, 𝓅𝓁𝒶𝓊𝓈𝒾𝒷𝓁ℯ 𝒻ℴ𝓇 𝓉𝒽ℯ ℳ𝒞𝓈. I think these characters, this whole story & the emotions it invoked in me will always remain with me as an all time favourite one. 👍👏

I just couldn't forgive him. I know many of the readers may differ from me, and side with him but it's my opinion, 𝐈'𝐦 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐛𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚.
🔹And Luki my god I absolutely adored him and I still wish Bessa somehow ended up with him.
🔹All the side characters were amazing, each adding their own substance & intrigue to the story
🔹I especially loved Bessa's pups ...𝐎𝐝𝐢𝐧, 𝐑𝐲𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐧 & 𝐄𝐥𝐬𝐤𝐚 (𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘪𝘳𝘬𝘴 𝘮𝘦) And I hope I could read their books too if I have some time.
The writing was simply superb....at first it was hard to understand or get along with the story, but after that little bout it just hooks you in and makes you get addicted.
The whole story was hyped up with emotions, drama, love, pain, betrayal, acceptance, memories...my god those F ing memories will tear you down and make you a raging inferno just like I did.
The ending was such a bittersweet one, but ℴ𝒽 𝓈ℴ 𝓇ℯ𝒶𝓁, 𝒾𝓉 𝒸𝒶𝓃'𝓉 ℊℯ𝓉 𝒶𝓃𝓎𝓂ℴ𝓇ℯ 𝓇ℯ𝒶𝓁, 𝓅𝓁𝒶𝓊𝓈𝒾𝒷𝓁ℯ 𝒻ℴ𝓇 𝓉𝒽ℯ ℳ𝒞𝓈. I think these characters, this whole story & the emotions it invoked in me will always remain with me as an all time favourite one. 👍👏

December 17, 2021Bessa by Rachelle Mills Introduces us to the Far North in the Tribute Series and brings us Bessa and Borson. Borson, believing that he won't find his mate has fallen for his deceased brother's mate. he makes one final trip to the far East, promising his love that once he returns, he will make her his Luna. Yeah, didn't happen that way. He meets Bessa and instantly, his Wild demands his mate. Borson as well sees everything in her, however, he still has feelings for her. Bessa is the betrayed party in this book and rightfully so considering mating is sacred. Not only that, she waited and now once marked will see and experience everything he felt for the other one....My heart broke for Bessa, but all of Rachelle's characters have flaws and Bessa's journey shows this mated pair's struggle. it also sets up the next book which once again draws in some of our favourite characters from the previous books!

One of a kind.
This story had me on such a chokehold I had to put off reading anything else for days after I finished it. It was just so much. My girlie Bessa can certainly hold a grudge. I mean she did it for the rest of her life, she literally named her daughter after the OW! Queen of self torture tbh. But I get it. What he did was rough. And they're mated, which means she will have to live with his memories for the rest of her life. That, the tattoos of the OWs eyes, and the house she lives in will always remain as reminders. He forced this on her. I get it. She did everything she was supposed to. She did everything right, and that still wasn't enough. I felt for her. This story broke my heart so much it left me thinking for days. I wish I could give Bessa a hug but I'm afraid she'd kill me.
