I’m not one for nicknames, but this one comes from the most attractive man I’ve ever seen, and I can’t say that I hate it, particularly because I do have an affliction for cookies.
It all started when I became obsessed with this idea of two people falling in love over food in the grocery store. They’d reach for the same item, a spark of electricity would follow, and they’d live happily ever after. The end.
That’s the idea I had for my next romance novel, but no matter how many times I tried to start the story, it fell flat. I needed to see it in action, so I started trolling my neighborhood grocery store, people-watching while eating cookies straight from the package.
And then he said hello.
Who is he, you ask?
The insanely hot and charming butcher from behind the meat counter.
Apparently, while I was watching people, hoping that they would fall in love, he was watching me.
With encouragement from my bold and borderline inappropriate best friend, I give in to his charm and agree to date the man. And suddenly, my creativity sparks as well.
I write love for a living without having experienced the head-over-heels type myself. Until Dylan shows me that that there are men out there that are real-life book boyfriends.
But love can’t always be easy, and conflict is almost guaranteed to arise.
I watch people fall in love. Write about it too. But this time, is it finally my turn to fall?

🍁Small Town Romance 🍁Age Gap (older woman/younger man) 🍁Holiday Romance
McKenzie's Turn to Fall is a standalone. It was a light and a great holiday story. I added a new book boyfriend to my list. Dylan is the sexy butcher, a charming guy and swoony. He did all the right things to win McKenzie's heart. Both are great characters with dreams, insecurities but passionate. McKenzie is a curvy woman, a romance author and humorous.
In addition of all that, Harlow introduce you a great message about acceptance, be confortable with your body even if you don't look like a supermodel. Allowing you to open up to reflection and think that confidence in yourself is what matters. And I really love when an author includes these kinds of positive thoughts that can help someone in their lives. <3
"There is no such thing as a perfect woman. But your imperfections it's what makes you unique."
Need a perfect fall heartwarming story - look no further!
McKenzie's Turn to Fall is a great easy read that starts with a fantastic meet cute. I love a couple's meet cute and this one is just perfect. I think every woman can relate to McKenzie in some way. She's a great character with everyday insecurities and a love for cookies I can get on board with. Dylan is the perfect burly guy...almost a bit too perfect. However he is the real deal for McKenzie and the way he stays true to his heart wants is wonderful.
These two together will leave you feeling all good and mushy inside. Also it will make grocery shopping a bit more fun now that I'm on the look out for possible romance encounters between all the shoppers!
Be still my beating heart! This is the perfect fall/ holiday feel good romance! I seriously had a smile on my face the entire time I was reading. I am completely smitten with Dylan and McKenzie’s love story!
McKenzie is a famous author who is having a hard time starting her newest book after becoming obsessed with the idea of people falling in love reaching for the same food item in a grocery store. She decides seeing this scenario play out in person is just what she needs to get started. Which is how she ends up spending a couple of nights a week wondering her local grocery store snacking on cookies watching other people shop and hopefully fall in love. Little does she know that the insanely hot butcher has been spending his nights watching her. Dylan is so charming and persistent in his pursuit of McKenzie that she gives in and agrees to a date. Not only does Dylan spark her creativity and bring new life to her current work in progress but could he also be her first head-over-heels love? The type of love she’s spent her life writing about but never before experienced?
Dylan is a sexy wholesome that will have you swooning from the first time he speaks. And McKenzie is a quirky independent goddess who is so relatable you can’t help but instantly love her and root for her happy ending. Both suffer from completely normal insecurities that we watch them overcome through love. Their love story was filled with a ton of vulnerability, courage, and lots of super sweet and sexy moments. But my favorite part is just how honest and open they were with each other, I love that they were consistently on the same page within their relationship.
This small town setting mixed with the fall and holiday atmosphere feels like curling up with cozy blanket and cup of hot cocoa in front of a fire. It’s like a hug in book form. From the fall festival, to a family trick-or-treating outing, to a full family Thanksgiving readers will be pulled into a truly magical fall experience right along with these characters. Harlow James really is a master at writing small town settings filled with so much warmth and heart.
Thank you Harlow James for sending me this ARC above is my honest review.

🍁 Small Town Fall Romance 🍁 Reverse Age Gap 🍁 Sweet and Swoony Men 🥰 🍁 Cookies 🍪
I have waited almost a year to read this book. After reading Harlow James Christmas book, I saw this one but wanted to wait till fall to read it. When I say it was worth the wait, I mean it. I loved this book so much. Harlow James sure knows how to right a small town holiday romance. This book was sweet and I mean that in every way, McKenzie does get the nickname Cookie Monster after all!
I absolutely loved the chemistry between Dylan and McKenzie. Dylan will have you swooning with every little thing that comes out of his mouth. McKenzie’s Turn To Fall is a quick, sweet, and cozy holiday romance with low angst. Oh and did I forget to mention, it also has some spice 😍
I recommend if you (you should) read this one, have some cookies on deck 😅
Wow! This story was better than I was expecting and I knew it was going to be great! I loved everything about McKenzie and Dylan’s love story. My favorite character trait was McKenzie’s LOVE for cookies and Dylan’s love for feeding her cookies! He really is an amazing book boyfriend.
McKenzie’s Turn to Fall is the picture-perfect fall romance, just right to snuggle up under a blanket with a hot chocolate and read as the leaves turn and the nights draw in.
McKenzie is a romance author, who is in a bit of writing slump. Looking for inspiration in the form of a meet cute in a grocery store, she meets Dylan, the butcher, who unbeknownst to her, has fancied her from a far for a while. When Dylan strikes up the courage to talk to her, they hit it off immediately, but McKenzie is worried about their age difference and the fact that she’s not looking for anything serious, but realises she could use how they met as the basis of her next book. She decides to accept one date, and they both quickly realise how right they are together, with Dylan literally being the perfect book boyfriend come to life. As their relationship progresses, McKenzie is still keeping one major secret, which she knows could hurt the progress they’ve made. How will Dylan react when he finds out, and will McKenzie be able to convince him that she’s really fallen for him all the way along?
Harlow is a favourite of mine, and I adore her writing. McKenzie and Dylan were the picture-perfect couple, it felt like nothing could ever go wrong for them, which at times felt quite frustrating because I am so used to Harlow throwing an unexpected curveball in there which shocks me. That didn’t really happen, the plot was quite predictable, but that didn’t make it any less enjoyable. It was just a very easy fall romance, with the best descriptions of the season and very romantic and sweet scenes. Dylan was almost too perfect at times, he said and did all the right things it almost got annoying, the man must have one flaw! But I liked how real McKenzie was, how her insecurities were there but she fought them. I did like how self-aware the whole plot was, it was quite a refreshing take on the romance genre, an almost behind the scenes look at the process of writing a romance book, but I am not sure many follow a recipe quite like this! A great book to read throughout Autumn and Winter!
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!*
McKenzie has hit a snafu for a new book idea and after reading about a meet cute in the paper, decides to haunt her local grocery store and see what happens when two people fall for one another over...food items. Making her way around the store, crunching on cookies and people watching, McKenzie attracts the notice of the deli butcher, Dylan. And the cuteness begins...
McKenzie was an adorable mess! Besides her cookie fetish and curvy figure, she’s passionate, loyal, and quite funny. She’s also a romance author who doesn’t really date after some horrid luck in the dating department.
Dylan was a total sweetheart. And he’s a butcher! (I don’t think I’ve read a male lead as a butcher? Unique job anyways) He’s seen true love up front and will accept nothing less than the same for himself. Seeing McKenzie in all her cookie glory had Dylan falling head of heels, but he has his work cut out for him with a gun-shy redhead. But he’s patient, determined, and confident he can get her to say yes.
This story was such a charming read! I loved Mac and Dylan’s dynamics together. Their romance was all kinds of steamy fun, emotional sweetness, and a lot of vulnerability. If you’re looking for an unusual meat (ha!) cute, older woman/younger man, relatable, heartfelt body image convos, and of course, a sizzling, smexy romance, give this story a whirl! Perfect fall read!
I also found my new holiday treat-pumpkin crunch cake!
I received an advance reader copy from the author and this is my honest review.
If you’re looking for the perfect seasonal romance, look no further than Harlow James’ McKenzie’s Turn To Fall! This story is so perfect for the fall and winter seasons!! Gah I just loved it so much!
McKenzie Daniels, famous romance author, is looking for the perfect inspiration for her next romance while people watching in her local market. Little does she expect that inspiration will come from the markets sexy butcher. Dylan Porter, said butcher, is ready and looking for his real life forever love. And he thinks he’s found it in the sexy redhead who comes to his market each week, eating cookies while she shops and takes random notes in her notebook. After some seriously cute wooing, McKenzie gives Dylan a chance and the cutest, most perfect romance happens.
I loved every moment of this feel good story, from not only Dylan and McKenzie, but the other characters in this book. And gah! The chemistry in this book was perfect! This book had perhaps the *best* build up to the first kiss ever. The anticipation had me so ready for it to happen! And while I was cheering Dylan on for being a gentleman, I was also simultaneously yelling “just do it already!” The mix of slow burn and steam was balanced perfectly adding to the charm of this holiday romance.
Do yourself a favor this holiday season and read this book! You won’t regret it!!
This book could not have come at a more perfect time. I needed a cute, feel good romance and boy did Harlow James deliver. Mckenzie is a heroine that I can totally relate to. She has a bit more curves than the norm, has insecurities about her size, and loves cookies. She is a girl after my heart. Mac is also a romance writer trying to find the perfect “meet-cute” story to write using her local grocery store for inspiration oblivious to the fact that she may just get her’s. Who knew the younger, hotter, almost perfect butcher was watching her watch the other shoppers. He even came up with the cutest nickname for her. Dylan puts almost all book boyfriends to shame. If I wasn’t happily married I would be at my local grocery store hanging out in the meat department looking for my Dylan. All in all this was the perfect book to help me escape and fall in love with love all over again. This is definitely a must read if you need a break from the real world.
This story is a warm mug of hot chocolate, by a cozy fire, wrapped in a soft blanket. To say it’s the perfect holiday read is an understatement. It has all the warm, fuzzy holiday hallmark vibes....but with hot romance! 🙌🏼 Harlow James gave me everything I wanted but was missing from a hallmark movie 😏. You know what it is.
*SIGH* Dylan is the dreamy, lovable, sexy hero. McKenzie is a successful romance author with a bit of a creative block. Their meet cute had me goofy smiling. Actually I had a goofy smile on my face most of the time I read this. I cannot remember the last time I had butterflies and warm fuzzies like this when reading a book. If you’re looking for a sexy, entertaining, low angst, comforting, book that wraps you in a warm, fuzzy blanket, look no further. McKenzie’s Turn To Fall is the perfect holiday book for you!
A romance novel about a romance novelist who finds her own love story while looking for book ideas. Such a cute premise, right? I loved the everyday feel of this one; how Mac saw someone she knew in a different way - in this case, the butcher at the local market where she shops weekly. That he was the perfect book boyfriend come to life, that her found family grew exponentially with him, made it that much sweeter (and hotter.) Dylan is dreamy. Mac is adorable.
This book has everything you need: "meat" cute, small town, holiday vibes, sexy times. Highly recommend.
I am completely hooked on this author. I'm still fairly new to her work, but she never disappoints. I meant never!
McKenzie and Dylan's story is so cute, you cant put it down and I was a little annoyed by interruptions like, feeding my family (maybe that's just me), but there's nothing like hoping to find the next best love story only to end up in the perfect romance for yourself.
I love the sex innuendo with food, classic, funny, cute and definitely some awe moments.
This was the cheesiest, corniest, eye-rolling piece of literature I've read in a while. Sorry, but this wasn't for me. The male character couldn't be less believable if he had grown horns and a tale in the middle of it. He is just too perfect. I understand the concept of fiction and embellishment of reality, but, man, this was beyond humanly possible!!
So, this butcher -a former firefighter/paramedic with rock hard abs and a heart of gold- falls for the plus size, beanie wearer, cookie eater writer who wanders around his supermarket in search of a inspiration for her next romance novel.
A couple of pages in and they are both deeply in love, spending the holidays toghether. No drama, no tension, no life altering longing... nothing. And it isn't even funny to read!!
I'm all in for seasonal stories, but I had a hard time believing you could meet a guy in fall and celebrate Christmas as a family. It just doesn't work like that, sorry.
Neglected backlist from one of my favorite indie authors? I’m so sorry I didn’t read this sooner
Meet cute at the supermarket meat counter, a romance author with an obsession with cookies and the IDEAL book boyfriend ready to sweep her off her feet.
I dare someone to not absolutely love this book filled with Body positivity Tactful and sweet age gap Strong family connection Loud mouthed and loyal friends
All centered around my favorite time of year FALL!
Romance author McKenzie roamed the aisles of her local grocery store way too frequently, trying to discover the next meet cute between two strangers. She was dying for inspiration for her next book and McKenzie was convinced the grocery store was where she’d find it. Instead, she meets Dylan, the meat butcher who had his eye on her—even labeling her the “Cookie Monster” because she likes to eat while she shops.
Dylan seems too good to be true. He’s incredible handsome, speaks his mind, and is an absolute gentleman. Unfortunately, he’s also 8-years younger than McKenzie and that has her questioning what he sees in her. What she doesn’t know is Dylan is dying to find the perfect woman to settle down with. But in the past, his open heart and honest nature has scared women away.
McKenzie worries that since everything between her and Dylan has seemed like something out of one of her romance novels, that eventually the other shoe will drop and she will lose the one man she’s finally fallen for.
McKenzie’s Turn to Fall by Harlow James is a sugary sweet meet cute romance. This is the perfect read for the fall & holiday season, but could be read year around, as it isn’t overly holiday-themed. The cover is what drew me in, but the inside is what won me over! If you’re looking for a feel-good, low angst, low drama read, definitely pick this one up. It’s a cute love story that doesn’t have many speed bumps. Dylan is the epitome of a cinnamon roll hero. And I really liked that McKenzie was a real woman—inside and out. This is a reverse age gap romance, but the age gap is less than 10 years. It was definitely refreshing. I can’t wait to read more by this author! 4/5 stars.
Before I even begin my review, I’d like to draw attention to this book’s gorgeous cover! Let’s discuss how absolutely perfect it is. The moment I saw it, I was captivated and Needed (with a Capital N) to read this book as ASAP as possible. If the cover isn’t enough to draw you in, then the book’s premise most definitely will!
McKenzie Daniels is a successful romance writer. Her books are extremely popular and her passion for her craft is indisputable. Living in a small town has proven to be a blessing and allows her to lead her best writing life. Inspiration for her next romance hits in a most unexpected way and in a very interesting place (the grocery store) and brings her into his orbit.
Dylan is both sexy and confidant. Although younger than her, he is absolutely smitten by the intriguing redhead he see’s cruising the aisles of the supermarket, where he works as a butcher. He is mesmerized by the curvy beauty and makes it his mission to get to know her. Dylan pursues McKenzie with a singleminded intensity that is admirable and makes him prime book boyfriend material.
The chemistry between the writer and the butcher is off the charts hot and watching Dylan and McKenzie fall head over heels in love made this book an unputdownable read.
“McKenzie’s Turn To Fall“ by Harlow James is the perfect autumn read and gets the judy.ann.loves.books stamp of approval. TBR and Enjoy!
What a sweet and sexy holiday romance this was. And what an adorable meet-cute!
Dylan is a butcher at a grocery store and has seen Mackenzie walking through the store each week... eating cookies.
He’s intrigued. He’s mesmerized. He can’t stop thinking about her. He looks forward to seeing her weekly.
Finally, one day, Dylan gets brave enough to talk to her. And it’s game on. He knows he wants her, and will not give up until she agrees to go out with him. He knows she’s older than he is, but that doesn’t stop him.
Mackenzie is a romance writer looking for the perfect story. She’s got a case of writer’s block and she’s hoping to find some inspiration from two customers who meet at the store. Little does she know, her inspiration is coming soon and is in the form of the sexy butcher behind the meat counter.
High on the sugary sweetness and low on the angst & drama. I enjoyed this nice & quick read that includes Thanksgiving and Christmas.
This was my first read from this author and I look forward to more.
McKenzie’s Turn to Fall is my first book by Harlow James and it certainly won’t be my last (despite the stance as a chomper on the #kitkatdebate2020 😜) This is an adorable fall read, the cover is gorgeous and the story is wonderful. McKenzie is a romance writer trying to find inspiration for a meet cute in the grocery store where Dylan works. Dylan has been watching Mac walk around the grocery store and knew she was someone he wanted to know more.
Dylan is a giant sweetheart and despite him being years younger than Mac, he knows what he wants out of life and his relationship. Mac is a little insecure about her penchant for cookies and her age but Dylan slowly starts to erase all her fears and give her the boost she needs to find her confidence.
The whole story had me wanting to sip apple cider by a window looking at the pretty fall leaves in flannel, leggings, and a beanie (that’s just the most fall-y / cozy setting I can think of). Gave me all the romance feels and I loved it!
This book is the perfect start to your holiday reading. As romance author McKenzie tries to find that perfect meet-cute in the wild for her next book, will she just maybe find her dream man passing out cookies instead?
This story has it all. Fall, cookies, a sassy curvy heroine and the cute YOUNGER man who has his sights set on her. It’s equally parts funny, sweet and steamy. I love a smart sassy heroine and that is McKenzie. She’s a tiny bit outrageous and her love of cookies is to be admired. Dylan is this adorable man who coaches his nephews football and has the kind of determination that is so sexy. He is going to get his Cookie Monster.
I highly recommend this book...put out that fall pumpkin spice candle and cozy up and enjoy.
This was a sweet and sexy book written in first person from dual POV. I loved McKenzie. She is a successful romance author who has the same insecurities about her curvy body that many real women have. Dylan is a younger man who is perfect book boyfriend material. This guy says ALL the right things and means them. Their meet cute is adorable. The relationship they form is sweet and steamy. Their HEA is perfect. I very much enjoyed this holiday read about a couple who make each other’s dreams come true.
I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an advance review copy from the author.
Awww! This is such a sweet, fun story! The perfect holiday read. McKenzie & Dylan are perfect for each other, and their story is a fun romp from beginning to end! I love his candor & straight-forward pursuit, and her banter back at him. The friendships & family relationships add to this well-paced and well-rounded story.
Steamy goodness, desserts that made me crave some sweets, and allll the swoon!
SO CUTE!!! I’ve just found a new book boyfriend. Dylan is freaking perfect and so sweet! I love that McKenzie is older and has lived life and that Dylan is what her life was missing. The meet cute was so great! I loved the way everything was written, flowed so well! I love the best friend who says embarrassing crude things haha. This book was just so cute! I loved it so much!
This book is the PERFECT fall love story. It's cute, funny, and steamy, the perfect combo. I loved McKenzie and Dylan. Their story is so fun and it gave me all the fall feels!! Made me want to curl up in front of a cozy fire. Such a great read!!
I’ve never read anything by this author before and I don’t know why!! OMG!! This book was everything and then some that I need this time in the world. I couldn’t put it down and just wow! And I can’t wait to go back and read more books by Ms. James!
This book was absolutely perfect. It was a small town, meet cute, romance novelist heroine masterpiece. Total book boyfriend goals in here. I highly recommend this to everyone.
I bought this book a few months ago back when I was on a mission to buy only self-published authors for the months of September and October.
I went in blind and it’s taken me a while to get around to actually reading it because life, writer’s block, and reading slumps. It goes without saying, I regret how long it took to pick this one up.
If you enjoyed the angsty author vibes of Beach Read as much as I did, then you’re going to love this one! There’s something about reading a book about an author that I thoroughly enjoy. The struggle is just so real and so relatable to me. Not to mention, an author finding her very own happily-ever-after is uniquely satisfying.
Dylan is a delightfully yummy book boyfriend and the easy banter between him and McKensie makes for an easy and fun read.
If age gaps (older woman/ younger guy), small town romance, fall/holiday vibes, and relatable love appeal to you then look no further for your next read!
Do you believe in destiny: whatever is meant to happen will happen…
I curled up in a cozy sweater with a hot tea for this meet-cute romance! Falling in love as the leaves fall… A romance writer attempts to cure her writer’s block with a trip to the grocery store.
As McKenzie ‘people watches’…she waits in the aisles for two souls to meet, fall in love—then she’ll have her story! Little does she know she’s being watched by the handsome man at the meat counter.
“What if you two crossing paths is all part of some cosmic-creative destiny that has been mapped out for your lives?”
Adored this! Ms. James never fails to give us a romance that will linger. Real-to-life characters..witty banter..chemistry…love. A feel-good romance perfect for the season! 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
I’ve been in such a book rut lately. I’ve started and abandoned so many books. But this one gave me faith again lol! It was so easy to get into. The interactions between Dylan and McKenzie were so natural and well written. They had amazing chemistry. Even though she is almost nine years older than him— it totally worked. I loved them together. They were both very likable and the secondary characters were great also. I really enjoyed the dialogue that was written between any given character. It was just really enjoyable and entertaining to read. The sex scenes were intense and emotional. I was totally invested in them and I loved the ending.
"And hey,” I pause as she anticipates what I’ll say next. “If you want to eat a cookie, Mac… eat the fucking cookie. Don’t worry about your body because I think it’s fucking perfect.”
I thought this was a fun holiday themed read. It seems like it will be just a general fall book but it actually goes from before Halloween all the way through Christmas. Not much Christmas in it though.
“When I finally taste your lips, I want nothing but the sounds of our moans to ring in my ears. I want to memorize every sensation I’ll feel when I kiss you for the first time. So if you can wait, I promise to give you that later.” She releases the oxygen she was just holding and sighs in my arms, wrapping her hands around my neck. “You’re dangerous, Dylan.”
I thought the storyline was cute. Falling in love with the butcher at the grocery story. I love seasonal books and a plus size main character makes it even better! Plus the female is older, at least 5 years older, but not a huge age gap. You don't get that very often in romance books. Overall a fast read. Cute, fluffy, very little angst, and multiple holidays included.
Did you hear that, ladies? Grey sweatpants, A.K.A. lingerie for men. Suddenly I’m not sure if my tongue is still in my mouth, nor am I enthusiastic about the fact that this man is wearing grey sweatpants in front of other people, or women, more importantly. A wave of jealousy hits me when I think that another woman could be appreciating this fine specimen of a man that has with each passing second, become someone I’m utterly determined to claim as mine.
