To spite his former love, David decides to court the least suitable miss of the house party, an enchanting Irish commoner Niamh. He will not marry a commoner, of course. It is just a pretense. Or it was. Until the sparks fly, and he finds himself falling hard and fast for a woman who is completely wrong for the role of his Duchess.
A penniless Irish commoner living among polite society is unlikely to find a suitor. Especially in England. Or at least that's Niamh's experience. Living in a troublesome household of her uncle, she is desperate to get away and go back to Ireland. When Niamh meets the Duke during the festivities, however, she finds herself at crossroads. Will she be willing to give up her freedom for a chance at love?
Sadie Bosque is a steamy historical romance author. Surrounded by the enchantment of the historical setting, her love stories communicate to the modern reader through the experiences of her characters. The heroes and heroines of Sadie’s stories are flawed, imperfect creatures with big hearts. Sadie believes that a happily ever after has to be hard-earned. The trials and tribulations her characters go through make them stronger and make the HEA so much sweeter.
What on earth has happened to the first criterion for a book? You know, the one that states that a book should be well written. This debut novella is full of puzzling punctuation, strange vocabulary choices, overused tropes, and underdeveloped stock characters. Granted, it's a novella, and character development is often given short shrift in those, but I can't let the grammar and vocabulary problems go.
BTW, if you're looking for anything Christmassy in this book, since "by Christmas" is in the title, fuggedaboutit. Nothing here to reflect the season. This is just a trope-ridden story about a duke's romance with someone socially inferior to him. I've read many of these in my romance-reading lifetime and this one adds nothing to the genre.
In addition, the author, who is, apparently, new to writing romance, probably new to writing in general, needs some help in editing, proofreading, planning, and researching, in order to produce something unique and worth reading. Yet I see lots of 4- and 5-star reviews here. It's beyond me why. Maybe because most people are nicer than I am?
In this, a newly-minted duke, who was dumped by the love of his life when he was not of the peerage so that she could marry a duke, is trying to get his life in order. This ex is now a widow, he's now an actual duke, and he's out for revenge. When he meets a lovely woman who's living a Cinderella life as the undervalued servant/niece of a neighboring viscount, they agree to a pretend fall-into-love to upset the ex. Blah, blah, yada, yada. Nothing much that's new here. And supposedly this happens at Christmastime. Could as easily have been Halloween, Valentine's Day or Labor Day, as much as a holiday theme entered into it.
But here's what I really didn't like. The writing should be outstanding here to make up for the hackneyed plot. Well, it isn't unless you count inadvertent errors that stand out. The book is full of commas that are either MIA or dropped in willy-nilly. But the worst thing is the syntax and vocabulary. I'm including some examples, just because I'm in a petty frame of mind, I guess.
(1) A horse was "whining" in one scene. (2) After a carriage accident, our heroine was "reclining" in the mud. (3) Someone gave the duke an "unscrupulous" look. I'm fairly certain that was meant to be "inscrutable." (4) Verbatim from the book: "The young lady, oblivious to his train of thought, moved on him trying to sit up." (5) Our duke made a "sleazy" escape from a crowd. What is that? (6) Verbatim: "With that Cobham grabbed still lying Niamh by the arm and..." (7) The author uses "over-rank" when I'm pretty certain she means "outrank." (8) Verbatim: "And she was not about to exchange a rotten cage into a gilded one." (9) "Your lout of an uncle had a gal to refuse..." Would that be "gall"? And can you put "a" in front? (10) "Will you ever seize calling me that?" Would that be "cease" maybe? (11) Someone in the story was dressed in a blue "frail" gown. (12) In the story, the duke graciously invites his guests to step outside, where they will be "subjected" to a lovely fireworks display.
There. I've given you a dozen of the many I found in the book. In a good story, errors take away from the enjoyment of the read. In an uninteresting story, the errors are the only thing I notice.
Well, that was unexpectedly delightful! Because who amongst us doesn't have trust issues when it comes to free kindle books?
David got his heart broken by his childhood sweetheart Victoria, when she dumped him to marry a Duke. Two years later, due to a few deaths in his family, David is now a Duke and Victoria is now a widow with a young son, and naturally she's open to rekindling things with David. David's response is basically "Absolutely not, please see yourself out" even though he desperately needs the money. Pettiness wins over rationality every time.
Cut to his hilarious meet-cute with Niamh, a beautiful red headed commoner, and David decides that she's the perfect way to get back at his ex. David will pretend to court Niamh to irritate his ex (and also the ton), and David will help Niamh escape her horrible uncle and get back to Ireland. Tale as old as time; a fake courtship results in very real feelings. I love this song etc.
Despite the length of this novella-a little less than 90 pages-the author manages to pack a lot into their romance. It's very insta-love-y but I bought David and Niamh's connection, and you can see why they fell for each other so quickly. I’m a sucker for a romance where two individuals see themselves as “outsiders” and they bond because they finally feel seen.
I also loved that Victoria didn't fall under the evil ex trope. She truly loved David, but she had to do what was expected of her and marry someone with a title (like so many women had to do in that time period and it didn't make them bad people) Victoria is also the one who encourages him to fight for Niamh, so I simply have no choice but to stan.
This book would've gotten 4 stars had Niamh's uncle gotten trampled by a horse but ALAS
To Fall for a Duke by Christmas, by Sadie Bosque. What to say. What to say about this short romance story. I can only say this, I absolutely loved it! Yes. Yes. This is me giving praise to the writer Sadie Bosque. Wow! I was pleasantly surprised. The writing in this book was a treat to read. Clearly Sadie has talent. She discovered it. She claimed it. She owned it and she is putting it to good use. I was instantly onboard with the humor in the book. I found myself giggling a little here and there. The two characters, David and Niamh melded well together. The dialogue was easy to read. The romance between the two was so sweet and cute. The writer did great with her description of the scenes. The plot to the story I found believable. The scenes are explained clearly and with enough detail to heighten the readers imagination. The book did have some realism to it. This was supported by the drama between Niamh and her Uncle. I really wanted him to get his. I couldn’t stand his character. The drama was fresh and the romance was warm and delightful. I found the courtship very exciting and a joy to read. The book is an easy page turner. Sadie’s writing capabilities definitely shines in this book. With her talent, Sadie has the makings of a great writer. I look forward to reading more from her. I recommend this book with two snaps and a “welcome to the club Sadie Bosque, we are all family here”. Until next time my fellow readers... read on! I reviewed this ARC after receiving a free gifted copy
This was a delightful, well thought out romance set in 18th century England. The story follows David (Duke of Somerset) and Niamh (a commoner from Ireland) and their journey to falling in love.
I loved the historical aspect of the book, especially the depiction of the class system and how much of a divide this caused between stations. I felt as though this was very well written and was present throughout the story, but it wasn’t overdone or too in your face. It felt accurately portrayed and very tangible, as though we were really there in the 18Th century.
I loved the concept, and that the story was focused on two people that didn’t really fit within society but rather than conform to a life they didn’t want they instead found each other. The story was heart-warming and the pace at which the story flowed, and their relationship grew was expertly done. It wasn’t rushed or forced – often a problem with novella’s – but rather felt more natural and realistic. Each scene was well written, and served a purpose, adding to the story showing how well thought out the story was.
The characters were wonderful, even though we didn’t get long with them, Bosque really showed us who they were and helped us to connect with them. Niamh’s home life really made me feel for her and how strong she was, and her insecurities about herself and her station really resonated. David was an equally interesting character, who showed himself as thoughtful, caring, and honest. His background set up the whole story and watching him find another chance at love was heart-warming. He was self-aware and hated his own hypocrisy, so it was a delight to see him overcome that. I loved that Victoria showed us her true self in the end and gave David some much-needed advice as it really rounded out the whole story, linking it all together and showing us how rare and special their love and journey was.
Overall, I really enjoyed this novella, and will certainly be reading more from Bosque. The story was a light, heart-warming read that felt perfect for Christmas. The historical aspect was excellently done and fitted perfectly.

When midnight will strike, which path will they choose ...
I was in need of a cheerful read and this quick one was just perfect. The heroes first meeting put a smile on my face and set the pace for my whole reading. David has been left heartbroken when his paramour chose a title over love, and now himself the new holder of a title, he must seek himself a bride, the wealthier the merrier. Still bitter about his lover’s treason, to spike her, he is willing to pursue the lest suited guest to his Yuletide party. Niall is not even a guest, just a servant made companion when it is deemed convenient. She is trapped in her relative’s home with no mean to escape. And while a duke’s attention could have been a dream for any debutante, it jeopardizes her safety as she, a destitute commoner, is not free of her movements.
So what began as a jest for David, soon turn in a rescue mission but will their inequality in appearance keep them apart or bring them together.
While it is a short read, I never felt it lacking in anything, David and Niamh have depth, they are not perfect but learn from their mistakes and even David’s ex lover is not the cold hearted creature I expected her to be. They are all breathing and living characters. 4.5 stars
After this debut novella, I will definitely follow this new author.

A wonderfully written steamy Christmas romance. When David inherits a title he finds his world turned upside-down. One of his firsts tasks is to host the annual Christmas party in Carlisle. David gets a little more than he bargained for when he runs into Niahm - a commoner. The woman who once broke David's heart is to attend the party and so David and Niahm concoct a plan to make her jealous. However, they soon discover that real feelings are arising during their fake courting.
A beautifully written historical romance set at Christmas with just the right amount of passion.
It’s been years since I last read a historical romance like this, and I forgot how much I enjoy them every now and then. They’re like guilty pleasures—but without the guilt, of course! This was a short novella meant to introduce the series, and it definitely did its job. If the rest of the books are anything like this one, I have a feeling I’m really going to enjoy this series!
To Fall for a Duke for Christmas is a Georgian era historical romance Cinderella-story. This novella is the author’s debut & when I saw it was currently available on KU I grabbed it (if you don’t have KU I believe the ebook is currently free through December 11th 🥰). So I adored this read: the writing is excellent, the characters well developed, their banter sweet & fun, and I love when a novella gives me a complete romance! 😍 I can’t wait to check out more from this author in the future!
After the passing of distant relatives, David finds himself newly titled as a Duke with an estate in debt & in need of heirs. He travels to his estate to host a Christmas Eve soirée, where he can find himself a Duchess. On one of his first nights there, David meets Niamh and their meet-cute has her falling in the mud & him mistaking her for a Lady instead of the half-Irish commoner she is. She corrects him of course and David finds her to be quite charming in how she speaks to him as a regular man instead of oohing & ahhing over his dukedom.
After being jilted by a woman he was in love with a few years back, David now finds out she’s widowed & interested in him again since he is a Duke now. To spite her and others only after his title, David asks Niamh to fake date/court him. She agrees to act as his intended during the celebration of his estate if in return he will help her escape to Ireland once they’re fake-courting is over. Niamh needs David’s help purchasing a ticket to Ireland so she can get escape the clutches of her controlling & cruel Uncle. I love fake relationship romances & this one was so fun to see David falling for charming Niamh.
This was a delightful story, very well written especially considering it's the author's first published book. It has a certain flow to the language that makes it particularly easy to read, a real page-turner.
The plot itself is well done although variations of it have been written many times before. Where it really, truly excels is the characters. David and Niamh are very likeable, their chemistry and interactions are undeniable, the dialogues between them are by turns witty, passionate and entertaining. I genuinely felt for them both and wanted to see them have their happily ever after.
This is a novella of what is to become a full series. I am very much looking forward to seeing what the author comes up with next. Although it's technically set around Christmas, it's not heavily Christmas themed at all and is suitable for reading any time of year. Available through Kindle Unlimited when review is posted, highly recommended to fans of historical romance that is mostly sweet with a bit of steam.
This was the first time when I read romantic books after a long time, and I have to say I am really glad that I did.
The whole setting in the 18th century Ireland gives the reader the magical experience of this beautiful era. I loved the way we got introduced to the aristochratic traditions and hierarchy.
Then we get to meet our lovely lady Niamh, she is such a lovable person, and I am so bewitched with her fiery red hair and freckles. Also her ambitions are admirable and she is willing to fight for what she wants as long as it needed.
I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get into the Christmas spirit with a lovely romance story.
Loved this sweet romance with a new titled David the Duke of Somerset and Irish commoner Niamh who lives with her cruel uncle and uses her as servant. David needs to find a wife so when his first love Victoria who wed another years ago and now is widowed comes back to him he turns her suggestion to marry. What he planned is to use the beautiful Niamh to make her jealous and then help Niamh to get back to Ireland where she has inherited a bookstore that she can now support herself but what he did not plan was to fall in love with Niamh.
Short story that starts but didn’t seem properly complete. The h was beaten unconscious by evil OM, not resolved. The H needs to marry money, h has none so they marry, the end. There is an epilogue but very little story.
I really enjoyed this! It was short and sweet with everything I wanted while also touching upon some more serious themes like class inequality, class superiority, and abuse (which I think anyone thinking of reading this should definitely be wary of if this is a trigger).
The romance was quick, which is perfect for this sort of book and for what I was looking for at the end of the year. I liked this a lot and I might even continue the series, who knows!
Lovely story of David, the Duke of Somerset and Niamh, a companion to her cousin. Niamh has bright red hair and has such a radiant personality (of course, since that's what her name means) that David falls for her despite meeting her covered in mud. They don't think they can marry because of their different societal standings, so David is going to help Niamh escape her unhappy home and return to Ireland. New author for me, new genre for this author, and I hope she writes more.
As someone who has written fiction books that I have not published—and nonfiction books that I have—I tend to have a soft spot for a debut novella or novel. I know what it is like to put your words forth and hope for a good reception. However, while I go into the book giving the author greater latitude than a more experienced author, I can't excuse everything when I find problems with the book. Unfortunately, this book had many problems. I think the most egregious are the poor word choices and issues with grammar, punctuation, and usage. The English language has a plethora of nouns and verbs to choose from. Sometimes only the slightest sliver of a difference exists between words, but that small bit can be crucial to give the idea the right feel, vibe, and even the correct connotation (if not denotation). This book has so many wrong word choices that at times it left me scratching my head or laughing at other times because they were so ridiculous. Commas seem to be a particular issue. In at least one place, they were used to set off a full independent clause within a sentence—a dash would have been better to use. Interrupters sometimes only had one comma when they should have had two. For this being a Christmas book, it didn't feel like it had any Christmas sparkle or spirit. The book is full of the tropes typically seen in a historical romance set in the 1700s or 1800s. Now, some authors can take the worn-out tropes and put a fresh spin on them, but that didn't happen here. The characters never came alive either; they seemed wooden and unbelievable. Because of all these issues, I do not feel like I can recommend this book.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
This is Sadie Bosque's debut novella as she ventures into the realm of historical romance, and I would say that she starts with a bang. • David is a newly-titled Duke who was once scorched by love and Niahm a half-Irish commoner living under the thumb of her domineering and cruel uncle. Their two worlds collide when Niahm accepts to pretend they are courting, so David can get back at his former love and Niamh gets help to return to Ireland. • The book starts with a well-orchestrated meet-cute and is full of witty banter that makes you fall in love with the two characters. Despite it being a novella, the story is not rushed and we can see their relationship slowly evolve. David and Niahm made such a cute couple and the story oozed sweetness. I'm looking forward to more stories from Bosque ^^ • 4/5 #fridayinaprilbookreviews • I voluntarily read and reviewed a free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
New author for me and while I don't typically read historical romances, i absolutely loved this book, a take on the Cinderella troupe with Niahm a sweet orphaned girl taken in by her rich uncle who is her only other family. She is treated badly and abused, basically the free servant /slave and punching bag while she gets his daughters rags. In this book her cousin is actually pretty sweet and kind and tries to protect Niahm. David is a new but broke Duke, who has to marry a heiress. He is intrigued by Niahm and plans on using her to get back at his ex girlfriend for leaving him for a better title.
Right from the beginning Niahm is on to him and pursues is a lot of interaction full of banter, laughter and a deal to benefit them both. The only problem with the deal is that feelings and emotions get involve and sticking to the deal is not what either wants. A great fabulous read - highly recommend.

Debut novel To Fall For A Duke By Christmas by author Sadie Bosque, is the perfect reads if you are in the mood for a quick romance.
To spite his former love, David decides to court the least suitable miss of the house party, an enchanting Irish commoner Niamh. Its all an act, he wouldn’t actually marry a commoner. Would he?
A penniless Irish commoner living among polite society is unlikely to find a suitor. But Niamh is desperate to get away from her uncle’s house and back to Ireland.
Niamh finds herself at crossroads wanting to go back to Ireland, and to her independence but also wanting to stay with David, and possibly finding love and a happily ever after, but how much stock can she really put into a fake courtship?
I really enjoyed this book. I concept was amazing, and the story very well written and felt accurately portrayed. David who inherits the title of Duke of Somerset is in need of a bride. in fact not just a bride, but a heiress who can easily maneuver the ton, help him restore his estates and manage his household efficiently. By all accounts Niamh is unfit for the position. which is exactly why he chooses to court her.
Niamh however is a very smart women and unlike the other ladies of the ton who would be delighted to have a Duke court them, questions why David would ever choose to her court. Her forthright demeanor starts a very unlikely friendship of sorts between the two and although they don’t know it yet, an even more unlikely romance.
Even though this is a very short novella, the length of the story did not in any way detract from the character development. We really get to connect with both the characters and understood what made them the way they are today and the reasoning behind their every action.
I especially loved that the ending was realistic, and that there were no magical disappearance of all the troubles plaguing both Niamh and David.
This is a very short feel good romance, and absolutely perfect for those looking for a quick read. One thing I did not particularly enjoy was the the book itself did not have anything to really do with Christmas even though the title said “By Christmas” and the author definitely could have used a lot more Christmas elements in the story.
That said, I did enjoy the story and I will definitely be follow this author and am looking forward to reading a full length novel from her soon.
I want to thank author Sadie Bosque, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange of my honest review.
This was my first romance read by Sadie Bosque and I enjoyed it very much. To Fall For A Duke By Christmas is set in the 18th century and is a historical romance novella. Niamh is a lovely young Irish woman, living with her uncle’s family. She is the poir relation. David is new to being a Duke and he is desperately trying to figure the whole thing out. They meet and there is an instant chemistry between them that for obvious reasons can’t go anywhere, or can they? I enjoyed watching them fall in love and the Cinderella like aspects of this story. TFFADBC is a quick and easy romance read, TBR and Enjoy.
Is David a hypocrite? I enjoyed this story it was very well-written for such a quick read with very realistic characters. Niamh and David will have a hard road to go down society of the day frowned on a commoner like Niamh and a noble such as David finding love together. This book put a smile on my face it was so heart-warming with a touch of fire mixed in too. What I really liked was not till the very end did you know what would happen between them. I am happy to recommend this piece of work and I hope you check it out.
This is the 1st book I've read written by Sadie Bosque; she has done a great job at writing a good short story; I can’t wait to read more of her books.
The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.
I received a free copy of this book via booksprout and I’m voluntarily leaving a review.
This is Ms. Bosque's debut novella and I would say she is off to a splendid start! She does a really nice job of bringing the scenes to life with her wonderful and vivid descriptions and really pulls you into the world of 18th century England. Though a short novella, I felt the characters were well-developed and I enjoyed following David and Niamh's journey to love. We really got a good look at Niamh and her insecurities and also her strengths. David is a caring and honest Duke and had his own insecurities and it was nice to see him get a second chance at love. This was a sweet and charming story and the storyline flowed nicely and the characters were great. I enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more by this author!

Part of the Necessary Arrangements series a well written story with a good storyline, the story flows smoothly across the pages. I enjoyed reading David, the Duke of Somerset and penniless Irish commoner Niamh's story, as they find love.
When her family in Ireland all pass away she is taken in by her uncle, need free help! She chaperones his daughter to a party and meets the Duke, now the story really begins to be fun! Enjoyed this book!
This was a fun Christmas historical romance. Fast paced and short, but to the point. A bit of a whirlwind romance. Perfect for a novella. I enjoyed it and it covered all the bases for its length. I felt it was a good short story and it didn’t leave you hanging or questions unanswered like some do. I highly recommend it.
This is my first ever published novella. I poured my heart and soul into it and tried to make it fun as well as steamy! I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!
Is it possible for an aristocratic to wed a “commoner”? It happens in this enchanting historical book. I must say I loved every single chapter of this story because the characters are out of the ordinary. David is not the usual stuck up aristocratic. On the contrary he has inherited this title but he keeps an open mind about nobility. Niamh is a beautiful girl who has had a difficult life until she stumbles into Prince Charming. The book is perfect for those who want to enjoy a HEA and mostly it is a reminder that anything is possible but only if you believe it. I want to thank this author for gifting me such a a lovely read.
