Striking natural beauty draws many visitors to Lake County, but the area also has a rich and captivating history. Willoughbeach Amusement Park arose where one of the worst shipwrecks in Great Lakes history occurred years before. Secret passageways and tunnels helped slaves escape to freedom. Native son and Tuskegee Airman Earl R. Lane earned the Distinguished Flying Cross. Marge Hurlburt, a service pilot during World War II, set an international women's flight speed record, and Amy Kaukonen, one of the nation's first female mayors, personally raided suspected bootleggers during Prohibition. Author Jennifer Boresz Engelking uncovers the history behind some of Lake County's most well-known people and landmarks and reveals stories lost to time.
This is an excellent book for getting to know Lake County, Ohio. My wife and I moved to Lake County three years ago and we knew very little about the place. This book is helpful in understanding how Lake County developed from pioneer days until today. There are many interesting stories about the people and structures (some still standing) here in Lake County. This book has given us many ideas of areas in Lake County that we’ll be exploring in the future as we get to know Lake County better.
It's a great look into Lake County's history. It features many familiar areas in Lake County that I personally visited and explains the history behind these places which help me love them more and more.
Full of really interesting stuff. A friend told me about this book and since I didn't grow up in Ohio, I figured it would be a good thing to read. I'm glad I did. I hope one day they write one on Geauga County, where I live, where Lake county came from.
I really enjoyed this book because it reminded me about a lot of things from my earlier life in Lake County. And taught me things that I'd wondered about and did not know. Enjoyable for me.
