Hawnt: A Young Adult Paranormal Romance Thriller

Rate this book
A teenage loner turned reluctant ghost. A psychic medium with a bloodthirsty demon on her trail. An unexpected alliance that not even death can break.

"Being dead is a real drag." That’s what Gene Hawnt keeps telling himself while he stares out the window of the room he died in, unable to move on. He’s forced to watch his parents mourn him while unable to alert them to his presence. He can't even pick up his beloved comic books for entertainment. So much for ‘things that go bump in the night.'

Just when he thinks death can’t get worse, his parents sell the house to another family and leave for a new life without him. Thankfully, the homebuyers' teen daughter, Marti, is a medium who can communicate with Gene. As their reluctant friendship blossoms, Gene starts to think that death might not be so bad, after all. But Marti also harbors a dark secret. After her miraculous recovery from heart surgery, a sinister presence became attached to her, and it wants blood. Gene sets out to do what any self-respecting ghost should; learn how to fight back before it's too late to save the love of his afterlife.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

"But he supposed that’s what everyone pined for, always—more time. Just one more moment. One more conversation, one more cry, one more hug or kiss or inside joke. But good things always had to end eventually, didn’t they? Such is life. And death."

When I read the premise of Hawnt, I knew I had to read it. I love a good paranormal romance, and I am glad to say that this book provided that and more!

Though it had a pretty slow start, the pace soon sped up and I was engrossed in the story. I started to care more about the characters and their lives. Our MMC, Gene is the sweetest ghost that ever had a delay in crossing over lol. I really liked his POVs and his funny ghost talks made me giggle. I even found myself relating to him as a awkward human often. I loved the way he respected and admired Marti, our FMC.

Marti, who's been through a lot and had an almost death experience, is a strong and confident teen. I admired her and rooted for her along with Hawnt and found myself really enjoying the story. The romance was so sweet and I really loved the dream aspect of the story. Jake, Gene's friend is such a sweet goofball and I adored their friendship. Her mom, gramma, and Lola are some other characters that I won't be forgetting any time soon. The dark side of the story wasn't that scary or terrifying to me but the writing was really well done. I didn't see the twist coming at all, it completely took me by surprise! I feared the ending won't be satisfying, but it was perfect! I had a huge grin on my face when I finished the book. I am looking forward to read more from this author. In short, it was a cute and light paranormal romance with some dark elements and sweet characters (with some exceptions, ofcourse). I loved it.

Thank you booksirens and the author for providing arc in exchange for an honest review.

The plot was basic but interesting. Marti, a girl with sight who can see ghosts and talk with them was going to die but with a miracle she came back from the brink of the death but with her came a dark unnatural force. After two years of the incident Marti and her parents moved to new house which was hunted by a ghost or rather the ghost was stuck in his house for some unknown reason. Eugene Hawnt died unnaturally without any cause and was stuck in his house as ghost since last two years. When Marti moved to Gene's house, strange things started happening and both of them must make right choices to set the course of the universe right.

Gene and Marti were likable characters ans I liked the interactions between them. Especially the dream thung was pretty good. I liked Gramma's and Lola's character, although they just popped in the middle but basically they made the story happen. Few things were predictable yet the author made a good work with her writing. Jake was a fun character and I hoped to see more of him but with the length of the story whatever I got was good enough. The end was totally unpredictable and unexpected. But I'm happy with how the things turned out at the end.

The book wasn't extraordinary but is good for a light reading. This is the first book of Elizabeth J. Rekab that I read and totally loved it. I hope to read more from her in future.

I found this author when I came across her book Everhaven, which is an absolutely fantastic read, and fell in love with her work with that one book. When I found out about Hawnt I knew I just had to read it! This author has easily became my favorite author in this genre.

I’ve been (im)patiently waiting for this book to come out. When I got the newsletter saying she was about ready for it to go out i literally squealed! This book is absolutely fantastic. It’s written wonderfully and flows. I couldn’t put it down. It’s fast paced and action packed.

The characters in this book absolutely blew me away! They became pieces of my heart. I absolutely loved them and was rooting for them like I was their biggest fan. Martine, otherwise known as Marti, is one bada** heroine. Marti has had a tough life. Born with a heart condition that kept her from making friends and playing like a normal child. Causing her to learn about her gift and embarrass the ghosts she sees. In the book Hawnt describes her perfectly: “ You might not think I know you that well, but I do. I’ve seen you laugh, and cry, and deal with some seriously crazy crap, and you know what I’ve noticed? You’re smart, and brave, and strong, and yeah, maybe a little rough around the edges at times, but you have a good heart. Frankly, you’re one of the best people I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing.” And Eugene Hawnt! There’s so much I could say about him. He’s very hard on himself. He sees himself as a failure and loser. He failed at school, had one friend, and she’d away from everything. He grows and evolves so much in this book that it’s amazing. He becomes more sure of himself, he’s compassionate, caring, nerdy, and so much more. He becomes Marti’s lifeline. His best friend, Jake, is something else. He’s scatter brained and zones out a lot, a surfer looking dude, a tad psychic, and all around best friend to have.

This book has it all! It has twists and turns that come completely out of nowhere. There’s ghosts, demons, psychics, gods, voodoo, and so much more. There’s sweet and tender moments, there’s fights, weird dreams, chaos, and more! This book will have you thinking you figured it out and then BAM! there’s a new curveball thrown at you. This author has completely outdone herself and can’t wait to see what she puts out next! I’ll definitely be here waiting.

A MUST READ BOOK!!

First of all thank you to Book Sirens and the publisher for allowing me access to this ARC

I first became familiar with this author after reading Everhaven and was so excited to be a part of the review team for this book.

The author has a beautiful way of bringing teen characters to life in a way that I, a 30 year old, can still relate to them. I was so attached to Gene and Marti and it’s just a testament to how masterfully she wrote these characters.

The story gripped me from the beginning and never let me go. It has heart and humor and this definitely brought tears to my eyes.

I can’t wait to read what this author puts out next!

This book is totally & utterly brilliant. Whilst initially the beginning is quietly on a slow simmer - introducing & building the backgrounds of the two main characters Eugene & Martine.

Once the two meet, the pace ramps up and up and UP! Then remains permanently on an incredible fast boil right up until the amazing ending.

I just had to keep reading until I finished this. Then felt bereft once I had read it all. What an absolute belter!!

Very sweet, haunting tale.

Beautiful, fun. Both character point of views were done well. I’ve already recommended the book to other lovers of sweet paranormal romance stories.

Hawnt is a cute paranormal romance with a mix of dark elements and light humor.

The premise of this book, while not entirely original (but what is these days?), is compelling: a human falls in love with a ghost, and you know the ending will probably be bittersweet. Rekab does put her own twist on the story, though, and takes it to new and exciting places.

The main protagonist, Gene, is funny, making him a good narrator for such a dark topic as death. He brought moments of levity to an otherwise heavy story, giving us breaks from the danger and terror. He's a lovable guy. Marti, the other narrator, felt very different than Gene, a distinct character with her own thoughts and feelings. Her strength is what makes her likeable.

The characters themselves are what drove the plot and kept me interested. And there are some great references to certain fandoms and music that I appreciated. But the story took a darker turn than I expected, involving voodoo and demons, and I didn't particularly like where it was going.

There are also a few other things I found annoying. The timing of certain scenes within the landscape of the story is sometimes unclear or hard to follow. Gene as a narrator is always second-guessing his word choices, which feels more like the author second-guessing herself than just a character quirk. And part two suddenly switches from third person to first person, which I found jarring.

There are some very predictable parts, and others that threw me for a loop. And while I enjoyed the sweet ending, I didn't always feel comfortable with what it took to get there. On the whole, I'd call this an average story. Better than many but nothing spectacular.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I had to stop reading at 65%. I’d seen glimpses of this in the other series I read by this author, but this one takes it too far.
This author seems to have an agenda against Christianity/organized religion. And in this book, she’s got a character who is terrible and abusive and yet claims to be a Christian/goes to church and the message is clear: since he’s a Christian, he is therefore a hypocrite and is actually the “evil” one. And this subtle message has been thread throughout this book as well as throughout her other series.

This opinion clearly comes from someone who is on the outside looking in and making opinions without all of the facts. As a Christian, it truly upsets me because while there are MANY so-called Christians who are hypocritical and don’t live like they should, this doesn’t mean that ALL Christians are this way. Just as in any demographic. There are good representations and bad. Making blanket statements and judgments about any one group is completely ignorant. Also, it bothers me greatly that if this author said this about something else, Muslims, for instance, it would never be tolerated. But Christianity? Completely acceptable to share criticism, hatred or intolerance. :(

I can say I will not be reading more from this author due to her subvert agenda. In addition, there are numerous grammatical errors, typos and inconsistencies. So I have no problem with this decision.

This is the 2nd book I've reviewed for Elizabeth J. Rekab and I must admit, she's moved to my 'oh!, new book, GET IT!!" list.

Hawnt is a bit more basic story than Everhaven. More of a standard, boy meets girl, boy falls for girl, boy saves girl....except the boy in question has been dead for 2 years. Thankfully the girl in question can see dead people, and that gift has gotten her into a bit of a tight situation.

I absolutely adore New Orleans and books set in and around New Orleans and this one does a decent job of placing you in the city and it's environs. Although the boy meets girl premise is basic, Elizabeth has enough twists and turns in store to keep ones attention riveted, and all the characters are fully fleshed out and interesting in their own rights.

My only reason for giving it a 4 star review rather than a five is a spoiler, but also another pretty basic trope that annoys the heck out of me whether it's used in movies, TV shows, comics ~or~ books. She gets a + for fixing it at the end, but still....

Thank you to BookSirens for providing me with an ARC to review. Looking forward to reading more of Elizabeth's work in future!

"Hawnt" by Elizabeth J. Rekab is terrifying, witty, highly intense, and downright horrifying. Rekab is a genius when it comes to terrifying characters and readers alike with dark, sinister creatures and incredibly unsettling scenes, leaving behind an uneasy, anxious feeling.

"Hawnt" is about two very different characters. Eugene "Gene" Hawnt, a teenaged boy who died way before his time and now haunts his family home. Watching his family grieve over his death is not ideal and as time passes, he has long since given up on hoping his family will notice him or that he'll find a way to physically walk out the front door of his home.

Enter Martine "Marti," a badass teenager with a wicked tongue and a sight for lonely ghosts. When Marti moves into Gene's old home, he's thrilled to have someone who can see and speak with him. Except, Marti has other problems than dealing with a stir-crazy ghost. Ever since she nearly died from a heart condition at fifteen years old, a sinister presence has been following her. As it grows stronger, she admits she may need help from her ghostly roommate, otherwise, there may be more than just her life at stake if she doesn't figure out how to ward off the violent presence that is slowly growing stronger.

Rekab knows how to write good horror that isn't cliched, over-used, exaggerated, or full of gruesome bloody scenes. What was so well-done with this story was the fact it blended the mundane with the creepy, unnaturalness of the paranormal that settles uncomfortably on our minds. We recognize the underdog, the guy who's full of heart and good cheer but is always a little underappreciated in Gene Hawnt. A guy who loves his comic books and oddball friend Jake, but feels like a disappointment to his family because he's not the brightest kid or the most popular. Then there's Marti, our heroine fighting to survive in a world that keeps trying to shove her out of it. First with a heart condition that made it impossible to have any friends because she couldn't exert herself in anyway without fatal consequences. Later, Marti grapples with a controlling step-father and a depressive mother who see her as a rebellious, disruptive teenager with anger issues.

When a menacing presence gets tossed into the chaos, "Hawnt" becomes this fast-paced terrifying thriller that becomes one hell of a journey for readers and characters alike. For those who love those unsettling, chilling, atmospheric novels that promises to deliver teeth clenching tension, anxiety-inducing suspense, and bone-chilling monsters, then this is the novel to pick up and read. There will be no regrets, but maybe a few nightmares!

Thank you to BookSirens for the opportunity to read a free copy of Elizabeth J. Rekab's novel "Hawnt" in exchange for an honest review.

“No Marti, you cannot find a ghost attractive.”

Thank you to BOOKSIRENS for giving me the opportunity to read and review this ARC. This is the second book I have gotten to read by this author - the first one was “Everhaven” - which I loved as well.

Marti has cheated death for 15 years while she suffers a heart condition. Gene is a loner that no one pays the bit of attention to.
When Gene dies in his bedroom he becomes trapped there, and his family desperately needs to leave the house. Marti and her mom and stepdad move in. But Marti can see and speak to ghosts & her and Gene become friends. A dark demon spirit is after Marti, and with Gene’s help- the battle has begun.
The universe is a balance.

I LOVE the way the author tells this story.
I was entranced with it from page one & felt every single emotion possible.

This was a really fun, suspenseful read. I love stories about ghosts and the paranormal and this was one of the best ones I've read in a while.

The main characters were both very likable, and I really rooted for them. The trick with any horror or dark fantasy book is to have characters that we really care about, otherwise, there is no suspense, and the author did a good job of making both protagonists interesting. The story was a real page-turner, and I enjoyed reading it. The author did a good job building up suspense. Definitely would read more by this author.
