Bishop Joseph Strickland is one of the Church’s boldest and most courageous leaders. His outspoken support of orthodox faith and morals, the sanctity of unborn life, and reforming Catholic institutions have made him a hero even to Catholics outside his little East Texas diocese. In Light and Leaven he offers a forthright perspective on the state of the Church and the world today and calls on the lay faithful to meet its challenges unflinchingly. We must not shrink from the culture, he says, but be a light to it; we must not retreat from the world but leaven it with grace and truth. In his direct and conversational manner, Bishop Strickland touches on a wide range of topics, including Church renewal in a time of scandal, the central importance of the Eucharist, how to build strong marriages, the need for prayer and silence in a noisy and distracted age, and the battle between good and evil in which all Christians are engaged. He will inspire and edify you with his wise insights, pastoral common sense, and evident love for souls.
I want to give a copy of this book to my priest and to my bishop. What a refreshing word from an American bishop. Bishop Strickland is very clear and straight-forward on the state of the world today and what we each need to do about it.
In Light and Leaven: The Challenge of the Laity in the Twenty-First Century (2020), the Most Reverend Joseph Edward Strickland, Bishop of the Diocese of Tyler in East Texas, offers a candid perspective on the current state of the Roman Catholic Church and the world today and calls on the lay faithful to meet its challenges head-on. We must not shrink from the culture, he says, but be a light to it; we must not retreat from the world but leaven it with grace and truth. Bishop Strickland touches on a wide range of topics, including Church renewal in a time of scandal, the central importance of the Eucharist, how to build strong marriages, the need for prayer and silence in a noisy and distracted age, and the battle between good and evil in which all Christians are engaged.
Light and Leaven is divided into two sections. The first, “Light,” details what the Church and her leadership need to do. This involves a more pastoral approach, particularly by its bishops, and, in so doing, will right the wrongs of the past. The second part of the book, “Leaven,” focuses on the laity and our role and how we can contribute to bringing the Church back.
Bishop Strickland is a man of God who is not fearful of speaking the truth of traditional Roman Catholic theology and doctrine even though this orthodoxy upsets many of his fellow bishops who have strayed from the true meanings of sacred scripture. In his words, “The truth is the truth.” He observes that “The world is not just post-Christian; it’s post-God. There’s an angry resistance to truth and authority. If there is no God, then there is no authority, and no one can tell me what to do. That’s how we operate now. Moral anarchy. … The idea that human beings are made [or created] [sic] male or female is oppressive because it doesn’t let people make humanity whatever they want it to be. Marriage as a natural institution ordered to one man and one woman for life oppresses people’s wish to form sexual partnerships with whatever person or persons they choose—or end them at will. It’s oppressive not to let people kill babies in the womb because we all should be allowed to define human life for ourselves…”
In addition, Bishop Strickland argues that the current Church hierarchy needs to return to how bishops and popes of the past, particularly in the early days of the Church, addressed challenges—that is, first and foremost, through sanctity and prayer—and to refocus on the ultimate mission of the Church—the salvation of souls.
Further, Bishop Strickland maintains that “all of us are called to holiness” and argues that “the number-one challenge the laity face today [is] making the Catholic faith a way of life [sic], not something you do for an hour on Sundays, leaving the rest to the clergy, but a way of living your days.”
Only 176 pages long and written in a straightforward and conversational manner, Light and Leaven is a quick and easy read. The simple writing also makes it easy for somebody with no real theological background to understand the concepts discussed. In Light and Leaven, Bishop Strickland lays out in simple terms the challenges Catholics face in today's society and why remaining true to our faith will keep us grounded and on the road to eternal salvation.
If you want to learn how to be a better Catholic and learn how to meet the modern-day challenges of the Roman Catholic Church, then read this book.

After reading Live Not by Lies for my Catholic women's book club, I thought I'd sample some of the other recent books which address living your faith in our rapidly changing, post-Christian culture. Bishop Strickland 's book is divided into two sections. Light looks at the state of the church and society today. Leaven talks about what to do to promulgate Christian families and culture in our country.
It took me a little while to realize that each section is a series of mini-essays on a variety of topics. Once I adjusted to that, I liked the book. Strickland admits to being a different sort of priest when he was young than he is today. He wasn't a bad priest, but focused more on programs, feeling good, and raising money than on prayer and Jesus Christ. It is a good reminder that we all have room for growth and that God works with each of us in the ways that we need it.
The Leaven section gives good ways to bring the light of truth to our families, our workplace, our communities, and our culture in general. It is both practical and inspirational. It is a quick read and easy to understand. It leaves you ready to renew your faith, stand up for truth, and carry the truth to the world.
This was a short and positive discussion of what is going on in the Church and how we need to step up to restore Catholics in these times. Much change is needed with the Bishops, we all know this, but much change is also needed with the laity and we need to get going on being the light and the leaven. A nice read.
This was a fantastic look into the issues that the Church is facing today. The simple writing made it easy for somebody with no real theological background to understand! Highly recommend to the Catholic faithful!
We need more bishops like Bishop Strickland. He's a straight-talking, humble shepherd of sould who doesn't shy away from the challenges of Catholicism.
A quick read that covers a lot of ground. What impressed me most is that it is written in very plain language. Bp Strickland provides a very straightforward accounting of his stands on various issues, areas in which he can improve, and how he sees the state of the Church and his brother bishops. He speaks much about the liturgy and how it can be improved in part I (Light) and about the centrality of the Eucharist (appropriate for part II: Leaven). He is not harsh but he is not afraid to criticize what and whom he believes deserves it. I appreciated this frank book.
This book is not too difficult to comprehend. However, some may find it difficult to absorb. I didn't. Bishop Strickland still tackled the problems faced in his country. He wrote what is really true to the Catechism. A lot of Americans don't know the Truth, they create their own versions of it. Despite self-proclaiming themselves as "progressive", they're really destructive due to the lies they want to believe in, with the majority of the priests too scared to stand firm in Truth.
Throughout history, the Church has moments where they shunned people who spoke of the Truth. Unfortunately, the author seems to be one of them. As of this writing, he has been removed from office by the current pontiff. This pontificate, in all honesty, is too much of a Western-pleaser, causing his encyclicals to contradict the CCC. Thankfully, there are African and Eastern Catholics who are aware of this and seem to question its recent actions too. Bishop Strickland is aware of these issues and his words in this book still resonate to this day even after his removal.
Thank you, Bishop Strickland for putting the truth out there. Thank you for helping those of us that are confused as to why we are not being taught as Catholics the truth of our faith. Society has caused the decline in believers of God and the true presence of Jesus during our mass. It is my hope that my local priests grasp your teaching, and teach it to us laity. We need to hear why we should go to confession regularly. Why we should go to church more than once a week. Being with the true presence of God is what makes us Catholic, and many of us have not been taught the importance of this. Thank you again, and please continue your teaching and learning to help us better understand how to be Catholic.
Bishop Strickland writes the truth of being a Catholic. The message is beautifully straight forward...it is all about Jesus being the reality of our lives and guiding everything we do.
Bishop Strickland wouldn’t be considered deep by anyone, but his simple essay is a must read in today’s Church in the US. I encourage all Catholics who see this, and anyone else who cares about civilization and our country to read it.
Bishop Strickland has written a thought provoking book about current issues in the church in a very readable way. I recommend it to everyone who is curious about Christianity or who yearns or needs a boost in their beliefs.
A clear, concise, conversational, intelligent, knowledgeable, realistic evaluation of current situation in the Catholic Church which is of interest to both Catholic and Protestant Christians. Emphasis on the role of the lay Christians in these chaotic times. Excellent!
Absolutely fantastic read!!!! Well thought out, well written unapologetic truthful look at our times and challenge to examine ourselves. Thank you Bishop Strickland!!!!
This is a short book but full of so much goodness! Bishop Strickland speaks clearly and with deep faith of so many issues of the day. His calming, common sense voice speaks loudly.
