Emma Whitecastle and the ghost of Granny Apples are back in this new short fiction! Emma and her husband Phil Bowers are hosting P.I. and medium Jeremiah Jones and his friend Rose for Thanksgiving. Plans for a relaxing holiday go awry when Granny pops in with a request for help from fellow ghost Albert Robinson. One of the ghosts that haunts Julian’s Pioneer Cemetery has been babbling something lately that has Albert concerned. When Emma and Jeremiah investigate, they uncover a sinister plot involving murder.
Sue Ann Jaffarian is the author of the popular Odelia Grey mystery series, the Ghost of Granny Apples mystery series and the Madison Rose vampire mysteries, as well as short stories.
Sue Ann also writes the Winnie Wilde romance novellas.
Like the character Odelia Grey, Sue Ann Jaffarian is a middle-aged, plus-sized paralegal. She lives in Los Angeles.
It’s Thanksgiving, and Emma and her new husband, Phil, are planning a quiet holiday with their friend Jeremiah and his friend Rose. Like Emma, Jeremiah is also a medium who has solved mysteries with Granny, the ghost of Emma’s great-great-great grandmother. That’s going to come in handy with Granny shows up. It seems that one of the ghosts in Julian’s Pioneer Cemetery is more upset than usual. It sounds like she thinks someone is about to die. Is she right? Can Emma and Jeremiah stop it from happening?
It’s been a couple of years since we got a new Granny Apples story, so it is wonderful to get to visit some of the characters again with this short story. The story is a bit simple, even for a short story, but it serves as a great excuse to spend time with these characters again. While we don’t see everyone in Emma’s orbit, I was glad to get the update on the characters who are here. All of them, living and dead, are wonderful. We even get a glimpse of what might be coming for another character this author writes about. This is a story for fans, and they will be happy. If you haven’t met the characters, don’t jump in here, but do start this fun paranormal series.
Ugh. This is the last book/novella in the Granny Apples series, and Jaffarian ends with a whimper.
There's no real mystery. Two people meet in the graveyard and plan to murder the wife of one of them. Granny overhears this and alerts Emma. Emma and Jeremiah Jones go to investigate. The entire thing is wrapped up in about 10 of the 40 pages.
Most of this is really a set up for one of Jaffarian's other series, the Odelia Gray mysteries. Jeremiah has plans that involve Odelia, and he wants Emma's opinion.
Emma and Granny are basically side characters in their own story, which is bad enough. But since Jaffarian announced in May 2021 she was retiring the series, this is especially disappointing that we don't get a proper or satisfying ending to Emma, Granny, and Phil's adventures.
After too long an absence Granny Apples and Emma are back! And there are other Thanksgiving surprises in addition to the mystery, including a hint for what may be ahead for Odelia Grey.
I don't know why Sue Ann Jaffarian stopped writing the Granny Apple series, but I have missed them. Being able to read this short story was like catching up with old friends.
A nice feel good story with some of my favorite characters! Much better than listening to the news! I always enjoy reading anything by Sue Ann Jaffarian.
I really liked this short story about Emma and her friend, Jeremiah, working with the ghosts to help someone who didn’t even know they were in danger!! Phil, Emma’s husband, and Rose, Jeremiah’s lady friend, were pleasant characters also. It was a quick read and very enjoyable!
