Business Storytelling from Hype to Hack: How Do Stories Work? Unlock the Software of the Mind

This booklet is your fast track to “the single most powerful tool in a leader’s toolkit” (Harvard leadership guru Howard Gardner) – storytelling.

From informal meetings to public our ability to get ahead stands and falls with our ability to be heard, understood, and believed, personally and professionally. But how do we capture interest and imagination in an age of information inflation? When you have an important message, you need to communicate it so that it ‘clicks’ (makes immediate sense) and ‘sticks’ (is memorable, repeatable, and consistently acted upon).
You can hack this communications challenge with stories. Storytelling is a brain hack.
This is your hacker’s guide to
• save time and nerves – get through to people quickly
• save money – communication errors are costing your organisation
• master storytelling – even if you’re not ‘creative’

Why do stories work? How? In this definitive guide, storytelling expert Jyoti Guptara takes you beyond the hype. Drawing on insights from neuroscience and with lively personal and business stories, Guptara shows you the fastest way to communicate better, so you can find and tell stories effectively.

Struggling with sales pitch ideas or how to get buy-in? Mere polite applause after your speech? Are people confused about the strategy? Then you need storytelling.
If you’re in marketing & sales, stories are your bread and butter. But making a human connection and making sense are mission critical to everyone’s work, regardless of position or industry. The CEO doesn’t need to work out all of the organisation’s stories, but they do need a working understanding of how stories operate and where they need deploying. They must have what Forbes magazine calls the #1 business narrative competence. That’s what this guide will do for you.

Written in a clear and conversational style, Business Storytelling from Hype to Hack explains how storytelling can help you hack 7 key areas of life and
• Hack Conversation & Influence Meetings
• Hack Trust
• Get Pitch an Idea and Hack Buy-In
• Hack Strategy with a strategic narrative
• Hack Sales with stories that sell
• Hack Yourself by reframing personal narratives
• And finally, how to hack Storytelling itself with a simple but powerful narrative structure

With plenty of storytelling tools, this booklet can be used as your personal public speaking workbook or as soft skills training materials. Jyoti Guptara was born with a twin brother on 22.11.88 to a British mother and Indian father, though the family moved from England to Switzerland when he was seven. At eleven, the twins decided to stop writing stories they never finished, and finally complete a whole book. Shortly after becoming probably the youngest-ever writer in The Wall Street Journal, Jyoti dropped out of school to become the world’s youngest full-time writer at the age of 15.
The result was a 2,000-page Fantasy trilogy published between the ages of seventeen and twenty. Al-Jazeera TV praised the Twins for “...repeatedly playing with perspective and truth, body and soul, illusion and reality”, BBC World described them as “Intimidating talent”, and FOX News simply concluded, “They are amazing”.
In 2007, the County of Los Angeles awarded Scrolls of Honour to the Guptara Twins for “enriching lives” through philanthropy, literary achievement, and inspiring other young people. Suresh and Jyoti addressed the United Nations GAID (Global Alliance for ICT for Development) at their 2007 Youth Summit in Geneva. In 2008, the weekly national magazine Schweizer Illustrierte counted them among the “100 Most Important Swiss” on its annual list. In 2009, they were invited to address the inaugural Youth Summit of Kofi Annan’s Global Humanitarian Forum on issues of sustainability, escapism and reality. They are included in the Who is Who Bodensee 2010 – 2011 (from the four countries around Lake Constance).
Residencies include three months at St Stephen’s College, Delhi University; the 6-week Palomar5 Innovation Camp in Berlin; and the Chretzeturm Fellowship: three months as Writer in Residence of the City of Stein am Rhein, Switzerland.
Jyoti’s journalistic writing has included a column in Switzerland’s largest subscribed daily newspaper. He is an internationally experienced speaker in both English and German and has spoken at such eminent literary occasions as the Leipzig and Frankfurt book fairs, Switzerland’s Solothurner Literaturtage, the C. S. Lewis Summer Institute in Oxford and Cambridge, and India’s Kitabfest. Jyoti has given over 300 lectures and readings at festivals, bookstores, libraries and schools as well as institutions for higher education, performing for audiences from two to 800.

As a writer, storyteller, and former marketing consultant I have had a foot in the camps of business and storytelling, and I am delighted to see stories being given the recognition they deserve as a powerful driver of business success. Jyoti Guptara’s book underlines the importance of stories across the enterprise, from strategy development to sales, and from managing people to personal integrity.

This little book gives a rationale for why stories are so powerful and a framework for using them in our professional and private lives. The book explains why stories can influence us much more than rational argument, and why storytelling is much much more powerful than data, facts, slogans, and numbers.

Having laid the foundations, this book provides us with a variety of approaches to using stories to generate interest, build empathy, gain agreement and alignment, create desire for our offer and even use stories to change our our own narratives about ourselves.

The book also gives advice and insight about how to collect the components of stories, to ‘farm for fragments’, and how each of us can develop competency, and build our own story bank.

In an age of limited attention spans, data overload, and fake news, a relevant and authentic story is a powerful weapon for individuals and the enterprise; this book shows us how we can develop and apply our own stories for personal and business success.

This book is written with business in mind, given a short and concise formula for how to approach storytelling. As such, I'm very much looking forward to applying those principles and. really, how-to-formulas the my future branding and strategy workshops with clients.

The writing style is so easy and personal, practicing what he teaches -- it is a joy to read, providing so many good take-aways for every single one of us, as a private or a business person.

I especially liked the part about "farming" and collecting little memory fragment, in order to put them together, in time, into stories, kept in your own personal memory bank. What a cool idea!

It is really a gem of a book, a must-buy, -read and -apply book. I highly recomment it!

Or if you have a great presentation in your business place, start it with a story and forget the old style powerpoint presentation.
