Bestselling author of clean and sweet Pride and Prejudice variation books, Bella Breen's books feature Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet. She first fell in love with Pride and Prejudice in highschool and again with the BBC mini series. Colin Firth will forever be the perfect Mr. Darcy. Today she brings her fantasies to life for every fan of Mr. Darcy.

She was born in Missouri, then moved to Iowa in grade school and finally settled in South Dakota which reminds her of the English countryside, if you squint and ignore the harsh winters and humid summers. Her favorite animals are cats, corgis and horses. When she's not writing you can find her walking in nature, cross stitching, reading, antique hunting and practicing calligraphy.

Often Told, Not Shown; Distancing Language

I am a huge fan of Pride and Prejudice variations written by contemporary authors. I love the characters so much that I enjoy seeing writers experiment with them. This is the first I've read by this particular author. Unfortunately, I found the books a bit odd. You do get seven true novels here, which is nice, but I felt like there was too much telling versus actually seeing people speaking or doing things. There wasn't enough showing; the best stories are shown, not told. She made some odd mistakes, like making it seem in the first novel that Lady Catherine wanted to walk out on the Bennet’s lawn with Mrs. Bennet, not Elizabeth. I actually read the section several times to see if I was just missing something, but in at least two places, she makes it seem like Lady Catherine's interest lies in Mrs. B. (And it was peculiar that Elizabeth was asking Lady Catherine questions as if she [Elizabeth] were the lady of the house.) The writing itself had an odd distancing effect to it, caused in part by the author's word and phrase choices as well as sometimes more elaborate sentence structures. Perhaps the author thought she was writing heightened language, as many readers—myself included—like to see in historical novels. But these awkward choices just did not work, at least to my ear. Because of these issues, I do not feel like I can recommend this collection.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Fabulous Pride and Prejudice Variations!

I’ll admit I took my time meandering through these stories – I want to savor rather than binge. That being said, bingeing would’ve worked as well. These are so well done. Whether you’re a huge Austen fan, or only have a passing knowledge of the writer and book, this pile of variations are for you.

Now, I’m a huge P&P fan – especially the 1995 BBC production with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. So as I listened to each story, I envisioned that cast acting out these different deviations. What if Elizabeth gets poisoned and Darcy is the only one who can save her? What if Mr. Bennet dies before Jane and Bingley are committed? What happens is Mr. Collins takes control?

With each story, I fell farther in love with the original text. Memorable lines felt as familiar as any story I listen to repeatedly. I sank into the Regency world where propriety is paramount and the rules must be obeyed. Well, unless you’re Lydia and Wickham, of course.

These stories were made all the more wonderful from Rafe Beckley’s narration. His talent knows no bounds as he gave perfect voices for each of my beloved characters. He gave life to these stories in a way that was just perfect. Although the books were great, they were made even better by his narration. I can’t wait for more Bella Breen books – especially if they’re narrated by Rafe.

Mixed feelings

This book leaves me with very mixed feelings. Some plot lines are engaging and there are sections of stories with great dialogue and writing that truly engage one's emotions. But some technical aspects of the writing are very disappointing.
From basic grammar issues (her/she, noun verb agreement, pronoun mix ups) to style issues (word redundancy within a sentence, modern phrases, 'clunky,' writing that gives no connection to time, place, or mood), signify writing which is inconsistent. The lack of professional editing is obvious and sorely obvious. It was also quite frustrating for Regency societal norms and practices to be inconsistently applied. There would be no PDA. The distinct lack of respect for the class structure of 'upstairs/downstairs' pervades. And the inconsistant application of when honorifics are used shows a lack of attention.
So three stars for some great ideas and 'some' good writing. But the negatives had me shaking my head - frequently.

Wonderful collection of books with familiar characters with a different take. Entertaining stories with some twists and definitely drama. Each book has its own set of quirks and drama for entertaining reading. Good set of books.

7 engaging books by Ms Breen. This is an awesome collection. I actually have some of them already but I cannot resist this collection of stories in one book. Love to re-read the love stories of ODC. This is a must read for P & P fans. Once you start you would not be able to put it down.

Fun!

It was great to have a whole collection of stories to read (and to only have to check out one item through Kindle Unlimited!)

Mediocre at Best

I would not recommend purchasing. Two of the seven were entertaining. The rest were mediocre bordering on silly and cheap.

enjoyable but!

The series was a fun relaxing read. However being a stickler for correct English I found myself distracted by the misuse of correct pronouns and verb tense. I did like the fact that each book stood alone and was not a continuing story!
