Hello. I write novels and screenplays and very occasionally, short stories and comic-books.
My new latest novel, Sunset Swing, was published in paperback in August. It’s the final instalment in the multi-award-winning ‘City Blues Quartet’ -- a series of novels plotting the intertwined history of Jazz and the Mob through six decades in the 20th century.
Sunset Swing won two daggers at this year’s CWA (Crime Writer Association) awards:
The Golden Dagger for best crime novel of the year The Historical Dagger for best historical novel of the year
It’s also had a great response from reviewers:
The Times ‘Books of the Year’ The Financial Times ‘Books of the Year’ Five Star review in The Sunday Telegraph The Sunday Times ‘Historical Novel of the Month’ The Times ‘Thriller of the Month’
Well crafted crime novel set in New Orleans. I loved a lot of it but it had a bit too much gore for me and I can't stand to read torture scenes so although I enjoyed it I won't complete the series
It was a fun murder mystery set against the electric background of New Orleans. However, I found the ending somewhat disappointing. I've never looked in to the Axe Man case and I don't know if the author has stayed true to the murderer but if not, it was a bit of a let down.
This book could have done with being a bit shorter. I know that the aim to build tension but there was far too much of characters doing nothing interesting, that added nothing to plot or character development. There's only so much of the haggard officer broodingly drinking whiskey, internally monologuing that everything is corrupt before it gets boring.
I've given this four stars because I did like the characters and I do think that this was a good adventure, even if it did come across as self indulgent by the author.
