After a “controlled burn” accidentally torches dozens of homes and businesses in a coastal town of Franklin County, Florida, Detectives Skylar Reid and Harvey Baker are left with a body on their hands. When the remains are found without ID, and there is no means of identifying the victim, besides a few pieces of a scorched cellphone, a tip of a blade, and some rare gold coins, they’ll have to dig deeper. But finding answers in the Forgotten Coast isn’t as easy as it looks. From Eastpoint to Wewahitchka, and back to Carrabelle again, they soon discover an unsolved death four years ago may be the key to cracking their most baffling case yet.
The name of the series contains the word suspense but I’m not experiencing it. It’s one of those, it’s something to read.
The are several things that make me, shrug. I big one in this book is The name of Harvey’s daughter I. The last book it was Payton, in this book it was Patton 🤷♂️
Another bit that doesn’t sit well is Harvey is supposedly the veteran Lieutenant, but he plays second fiddle to Skylar. She does all the questioning, he takes notes. Her assumptions are right on, Harvey’s are seldom if ever right. If you wanted a female lead, why not have created the series where she is the veteran and Harvey is the new kid on the block.
There is more but not worth the time. Usually I’m eager for the next book in a series to be released, but not here.
I read the series quickly, as one big mystery novel. Sky is quite a forceful but fun character and the Florida Panhandle setting adds a lot of interest. Like many Kindle Unlimited books, I encountered issues that a good copy editor would have caught prior to publication. I am an avid reader, not an editor, but would be willing to read unpublished manuscripts to catch some of these errors prior to publication. Skylar deserves to be called her given name, not Skylark.
I love skylar and Harvey as a team, I also like skylar and Ben as a couple, but don't make them a couple to fast the chase is funny, she is sarcastic and that makes her very interesting and funny. Only one issue I have is the proof reading is not very good , I'm big on noticing errors and it bugs me. All and all I love this series keep them coming please. I want to move to cartwheels now.
I read this series and found it very enjoyable. The writing is good, the plots are inventive. The characters are interesting. Just one thing bothers me, almost every teenager throughout the series wears Matalica tee shirt and ripped jeans. Where are they finding them??. change it up a little!
Book six of a great series set in asmall town in north east Florida. Very believable characters. Buy book one. It will start you on a very enjoyable mystery read.
Don't you just love the Ocean, strong, smart female characters, mystery, cop drama, AND its a series, so the enjoyment goes on and on. Greatly Anticipating the next book.
Reading this series, in order, the character development is, at times, frustrating. The only one who seems to mature is Skylar. Almost everyone else seems more childish. Nevertheless, the story lines are enjoyable.
Emma Rose Watts writes a thought provoking story. I love the twists and turns that keep you guessing until the very last page! Read her books! You won't be disappointed.
I throughly enjoyed this book. I hate to think that this is the last in this series. Great dynamic between the lead characters and kept me guessing until the end.
