A madman with a god complex. A trail of bodies with no end in sight. Can a psychologist stop the murder spree before he's the next victim?
Dr. Bryce Davison still struggles for normalcy since his brush with death. After surviving with a throbbing scar as a souvenir, the specialist finds himself on speed dial for a defense attorney with a new client in need of an evaluation. But when he takes the referral, he's shocked to discover the drunk who assaulted a cop is Amish.
With his immediate assessment exposing a young man bottled up with rage, the doctor has grave fears for the family's safety. And as he realizes how far down the road of instability his subject has driven the buggy, Bryce knows he's studying his worst nightmare—a developing homicidal maniac.
As wanton depravity overflows into violent fury, can he defend himself from a killer intent on bloody vengeance?
Rumspringa is the second book in the gripping Broken Minds psychological thriller series. If you like resilient heroes, brutal psychopaths, and high-stakes conflict, then you'll love Lee Maguire's riveting nail-biter.
In this sequel to Closer Than You Think, we find psychologist Bryce Davison trying to self-heal from past trauma while also helping his patients. His practice is growing and he is enjoying his newfound fame. Flawed but caring and compassionate, he works hard to rebuild his life with the support of family and friends and of course, his Basset Hound, Maxine.
A young Amish man, Josef, whom he has crossed paths with, develops an unhealthy obsession with him that escalates into violent behavior. He decides to take a Rumspringa, a rite of passage in some Amish communities where adolescents get to experience life outside of their community. Even though this is frowned upon in his community and he is much too old, he decides to do it anyway. We follow his journey to CA and back and his descent into madness and murder.
I would recommend reading the first book in this series before this one. Although the author did a good job catching the reader up on past events, I still felt like I was missing something. This is a nail-biting psychological thriller with intense scenes. There were points in the story where I gasped out loud. Not a dull moment to be had in this one. The short chapters made the story seem a bit choppy, but it also kept the pace moving and made it an easy read. The simultaneous storylines were well written and kept you guessing. I enjoyed seeing both the point of view of our villain and hero. Dr. Davison is a well-rounded and endearing character; I was completely invested in his story from the beginning. In contrast, Josef is a bomb waiting to go off. He has an inflated sense of self-importance and believes he is God’s gift to everyone. Then the suspense builds until the two storylines finally intersect. This book is full of great psychological insights and offers a unique perspective from a clinical standpoint rather than most books that give us a profiler’s point of view. Though mostly a thriller, there are uplifting points in this story—not all the minds Dr. Davison works with are broken. Dr. Davison also has a great sense of humor, so there is much-needed levity throughout. Of course, the real star of the story is Max; I enjoyed her antics. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves thrillers.
This is THE BEST thriller I have read! I have read several Amish books in the past. But this is nothing like any I’ve read! From the minute I started this, I had a difficult time putting it down! Josef Lapp has wondered how the English live. He decides to take part in the Amish Rumspringa, even if his Amish sect did not believe in it! Josef returns to the Amish but chooses to not follow Amish rules! I’m not sharing any more of the book as I want those who love thrillers to get the full effect!
I didn't like this one as much as the first. I'm an action fan, but there was gratuitous violence in this one. I hated that the serial killer was Amish; seems to taint the otherwise-pacifistic group. And it bugged me that he had pined for his estranged wife all through the first book then when she wanted to get back together he didn't really want to. Granted, she had cheated on him, but still... Anyway, not a bad book, just a little extreme.
Oh my didn't know the Amish could be so scary. Excellent excellent read. Joseph was a busy self centered guy. Many surprises definitely a thriller and a deserving ending.👍👍👍👍📕
Received from a free site, this was a fabulous book, with a page turning story. Scary, as well as uplifting....So many allusions to the first book, though, so I've got to go find that one, as well!
Good story.. Good characters.. But a little "diarrhea" of the mouth. I got this book free from Kindle.. some "chapters" could have less words.. If Mr. Maguire offers another free book I'd read it. I think at least 10 chapters could have been downsized.
The book was decent. I felt the Amish character didn't quite fit into his society but worked well for who he was throughout the story. Had a good plot and well developed characters.
Interesting format. The narrative switches between third person and the main character. He is compelling. Interesting side characters. Would like to know Dean better.
Excellent writing with a tight plot and realistic characters. Near the end of the book, the editorial staff failed this author with several pages of repeated text.
Fast paced. In your face and in your head! A cast of characters all connected by an unseen thread until that thread gets yanked and all hell breaks loose!
