With Shield and Ink and Bone

Rate this book
The sharpest blades are forged in fury.

A hard-earned shield.

Days before she is to take her place as a shield maiden, like her mother before her, two deaths alter the course of Liv’s future. One belonged to a witch who called her by name, the other a chieftain from the north. Vengeance for the chieftain’s death comes in a wild fury that burns her village and slaughters her family. Left for dead, Liv pleads to Skuld—norn and weaver of the future—to spare her. A deal is struck that will endow her with the dark magic needed to claim her vengeance. But this power comes at an unfathomable price...

Ink made from the ashes of loved ones.

After his home is attacked, Calder races to warn neighboring villages. Little does he know he’s traveling the path of fate that will lead him straight to Liv. Despite being broken, angry, and overwhelmed by power she cannot contain, it’s her willingness to defend others that draws Calder to her.

Armor forged from the bones of those held dear.

Together, Liv and Calder discover they are two sides of the same sharpened blade. Rising from the heartache and fury in their pasts, they see a future together worth fighting for. With their strengths and hearts combined, can they become a force powerful enough to defeat the fleet of darkness coming for them? Or will the thread of fate that binds them unravel?

With Shield and Ink and Bone is perfect for fans of A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle Jensen, Warrior of the Wild by Tricia Levenseller, and The Ever King by LJ Andrews.

Calder. Calder. Calder. Enough said.

Okay, so most of the time I don’t lean toward romantic type male MCs, I prefer them a little mean and snarky. I’m not sure why. That’s probably a question for my psychiatrist lol.
🤷🏼‍♀️ 🤷🏼‍♀️ 🤷🏼‍♀️ 🤷🏼‍♀️
** ENTERS... CALDER **
😍😍😍😍 🤤🤤🤤🤤

Calder had me feeling some type of way. He was SO sweet, loyal, romantic, strong, and fierce all wrapped in a sexy shell of a man. On top of that he was a Viking?! 😱😳🥳😍
YES, PLEASE!

Okay, I’m going to try to stop gushing over my new baby daddy (Calder) and talk about the rest of the book.
I can do this. Deep breath.

So, the beginning was extremely sad and there were other parts through out the book that I found myself tearing up a little. Luckily, it all ended with a bittersweet, happy ending. I did find myself a few times in the middle of the book growing bored and a little restless but then baby daddy would enter the scene and make everything sunshine and rainbows again. 😉👍🏼
I also really enjoyed the Norse gods and Viking setting a lot. I love any book about Vikings and that is always one of my top timelines to read about.

**Moral of this story definitely is that something beautiful can come from devastation... AND sometimes that beautiful thing can be a sexy Viking god of a man! 😍🤤
THANK YOU ODIN FOR THAT!! 👏🏼 👏🏼

If the snake on the cover isn't enough reason for you to, at least, check out this book then I don't know what's wrong with you but I will pray for you.

Kidding. But seriously, the snake, the vibrant colors, and the font?? That's how you done a young adult book filled with magic, Vikings, and an incredible female lead.

With Shield and Ink and Bone was an amazing story about a young girl whose home and family were taken viciously from her and who returned from the brink of death to lay vengeance to the man responsible.

The writing flawlessly pulled me into the story and I couldn't stop reading. It is told from Liv's POV (first person) and you can expect the stake to get higher with every chapter. I loved the world inside WSAIAB and since I knew so little about Norse mythology, I learned new things. Oh, and I'm also thrilled by the illustration of Liv and Calder plus the bonus scenes at the end!

I felt quite a deep attachment to the characters, especially Liv and Armund. Liv was such a strong and inspiring character. Her love for her family always reminded me how lucky I am to still have my own. Her journey to become who she was is challenging, not everyone can make it through. Yet she endured and coming out of it stronger than ever before. I cheered every time she did something awesome and moments when she reminded everyone not to mess with Skuld's Vengeance!

Armund was the most patient and kind. He gave the best advice, his presence calmed me somehow. The other characters were equally charming and unforgettable. I liked the relationship between Armund, Calder, Fell, Tyr, and Sig. Though I wished for more friendly banter between them. I also want to mention Hella, Hilda, and Elga because they're remarkable women! And even though I see why this happened in the story, I dislike the insta-love. But eventually, I grew to support the couple.

Overall, With Shield and Ink and Bone was a marvelous read filled with sorrow, loss, and grief but also blazed with the thirst for revenge and the courage to protect loved ones. I dived in with almost zero expectations yet Liv's story managed to blew my mind, shattered my heart, and torn me apart. It's perfect for you who enjoys fantasy, mythology, Vikings, magic, and a tale of a brilliant young woman.

I loved this book so much this author never disappoints I love her writing and characters so much looking forward to whatever she writes next. I loved the characters so much especially Liv and Calder they fit well together had a connection pretty early on. What I loved about Liv was one her strength both of body and character her willingness to do what she has to to protect the people she cares for after so much was taken from her. I loved Calder for his understanding how he treats Liv would do anything so that she would live. There are other great characters like Armund Calder's Father a wise and strong man who gives back just a little of what Liv is missing. I loved the plot a great Viking story of loss and vengeance as well as a romance for the ages it starts with Hodor having vision telling his family with only Liv believing him things play out like the vision and Liv loses everything and gets the help of a Norn to survive and get her vengeance so she sets out to kill the one who massacred her family meets a great love and a new family and finally those she loves is avenged and she now has her whole life ahead of her.

For those who can't get enough of Vikings, Norse Mythology, and kick-butt female leads, this one is for you.

This was my first leap into a Casey L. Bond novel and her writing didn't disappoint! Strong, effortless, and ensnaring from the first page.

Liv is just about to take her place as a shieldmaiden in her village, but two deaths occur days before and it changes the course of everyone's life, and death. Falling in battle, Liv strikes a deal with Skuld and she's allowed to live as long as she doesn't break the deal with the goddess. Along the way she meets Calder, and a few other characters as well, who strengthen and aid her cause to fulfill her destiny.

The writing, as I said, superb! But what I had a difficult time with was the pacing, it started off with a quick boil, then simmered the rest of the way. There is romance, but it certainly doesn't take the front seat, and at times seems a little superficial.

All in all, it's a solid read.

A wonderful Viking tale giving me chills and a fierce need to become a Shield Maiden. It was fun and fast-paced and gruesome and yet again providing me with a fierce female to cheer on.

Liv is Shield Maiden, and as all fantastic heroines should be, she is a proud fiercely loyal woman who seeks revenge over the death of her family. And the way she does it is completely badass - striking a bargain with the Norse goddess Skuld, the weaver of futures.

I loved Armund and the boys: Calder, Tyr, Fell and Sig. They were such a loyal loveable bunch, despite their grumpy moments. I will say the only think I didn’t love was the Insta-Love. I just couldn’t get on board with the Liv/Calder storyline, i need more build-up to be invested 🤷🏻‍♀️

Despite this, WSAIAB is cutthroat, its full of vengeance, action, adventure, magic, fate and I devoured it 🖤 Norse Mythology is a love of mine so I love it when people put pen to paper and create storylines for me to get lost in! 🖤

*Thoughts*

Casey L. Bond's With Shield and Ink and Bone is a Viking inspired fantasy featuring 17-year-old Liv Eriksson who goes from challenging her mother to become a shield maiden, to becoming a warrior for the Goddess Skuld, weaver of the future. Liv and her brother Hodor are preparing for their trials, a battle with their parents to earn their shields, and then they'll meet with the clan leader and sail in the spring on the clan's next raids. But first, they have to survive the winter, and Hodor has had a vision in the form of a dream that foretells of a very different outcome.

3.5 ⭐️

I really enjoyed this but wish it was a series or longer to really expand on the Viking lore, and other characters backgrounds. The story and the characters were great just wish I had more of it.

I also would’ve liked if the epilogue had scenes with Calder and Liv in the future.

I enjoyed this book. Did I love it? No… Did it feel like a genuine Viking story? Also… no. But, it had good bones and a decent plot, and although I found it to be a bit slow, I did like it.

This book started off really strong. It was absolutely heartbreaking, but we were introduced into the lives of this clan and the magic that surrounds our main character.

But once the initial tragedy happens, and Liv comes into her powers, the book really, really starts to drag. We start to try and wrangle up warriors for a big battle, but really, that's all that we do, for the majority of the book. (and once the “big battle” comes, it’s really a bit of a let down)

The relationship between Liv and Calder really didn’t feel genuine to me. He was instantly in love with her, and while he was so, so sweet, and I did like his character, there really were no sparks between them. I mean, she spent 80% of the book pushing him away, so I’m not sure what I expected.

The found family in this book was my favorite aspect, even above the magic system. After the huge tragedy at the beginning of the book, it was so heartwarming to see her be absolutely loved by these new people.

There are a lot of things that I liked about this book, and I did really enjoy it, but none of my “like” ever crossed over into love.

I had no knowledge about the book before I dived in, I just knew that it had a really pretty cover that I liked, so why not take a chance with fate, or now I would say Skuld.

This story starts with a really detailed description of a family in a small city in a big fjord. Our main character's, Liv's brother has a terrible nightmare just before a big ceremony, it doesn't cause that much problems, just a lot of bad thought so far. But as time goes on the author makes me cry before I even reach the hundreth page, why would she doooo this to me?

I really liked the story, it was always full of action with some really tense fighting scenes, that I absolutely loved, but it still put a really interesting character development, we could see a girl becoming her better self, when she finds a reason to live.

Also, I really love norse mythology characters and we could see several one of them greatly represented throughout the whole story. Odin, Skuld, Thor and I could go on and on.

I recommend this book if you are ready to shred tears, and follow the path of a badass girls adventures while she fights for her family.

Casey L Bond just keeps surprising me with the tales she weaves. I wasn’t sure how I would like a Viking story but I LOVE it! It’s unique and has opened up a new genre to me.
Liv is fierce and a force to be reckoned with. Vengeance will be hers and she will take down anything or anyone that gets in her ways. Calder was a pleasant surprise. His loyalty is strong and boy is he loyal to Liv.
I won’t say much more because I don’t want to spoil but it’s a wonderful read and one of my favorites of 2020

This is one book unlike any others. I have never read a book like this before, its so unique as are most of Casey L Bond's books, however, this one definitely takes the top. The character and world building she brings her readers is just phenomenal. With the turn of each page brings you more and keeps you on your toes wanting more, waiting to see what's to come next and of course she doesnt disappoint. The journey these characters go on bring you so much insight into their world, you get swept up into the story line as it plays out in your mind. Casey Bond's imagination never ceases to amaze me and With Shield Ink and Bone is by far my favorite story by her. I think its because of how different it is from anything I have ever read. Ill never know where she comes up with her stories but Ill def be a fan for life. This is one you have to read before 2020 is over, youll thank me later.

"I refuse this fate. Weave a new thread."

This book is darker than I thought it would be, but I like it better this way. I love viking stories and Bond didn't disappoint! I love that this book picked the Norns as main topic among various Norse Gods and myths. Skuld and her sisters were very intriguing. AND OUR HEROINE LIV! I love her, your honor. I love this book for the neat writing, perfect atmosphere, great characters (Liv, Armund, Calder, and all the people! Villains included).

Recommended read for viking and norse myth fans!

Vikings, Gods, and grief. All can be found between the pages of this amazing book! I loved Liv and Calder! The mentions of the Gods were like little aha moments that pull you deeper into the story and keep you intrigued. Liv is such a fierce character! Calder is the romantic, and the role reversal was perfect! I fell in love with Calder the minute he let her name his horse. I'm sad it's over...

I thought this story was really interesting. I've read other similar stories and this one had such fascinating details that made me want to learn more about Norse mythology.

Liv is a strong protagonist who lives to protect her loved ones. After Fenris comes, and she strikes a bargain with Skuld, that fierce warrior who will stop at nothing to avenge those she lost and protect her new loved ones is so consistent and strong.

Calder and his father connect in interesting ways with Liv tying so much together and knitting a strong bond.

There were a few things that put this in the good, but not quite great, category. One was the repeated use of specific phrases...the two main examples are when people's "eyebrows kiss" and the amount of rasping...the rasping happens so often, especially when Liv speaks that it got distracting.

Another point was some of the dialogue felt predictable/expected/forced, which was disappointing because there are parts where it's really strong.

The romance felt oddly chaste - not in general because things happen, just with very little detail (explicit or not) compared to the amount of very detailed gore and violence that happens. I'm always surprised when authors can and do embrace the vivid details of battle, but shy completely away from fleshing out scenes where characters share physical intimacy. (Not that I'm saying steamier scenes were needed, but I think they should feel more balanced, if that makes sense)

Overall, the world is fully fleshed out, details are really interesting, our protagonist starts out Hel-bent on vengeance, and ultimately finds more to live for and protect. CB gets creative in altering original deals (no spoilers, so I can't be more specific than that!), and just when I thought she was going to leave us wondering what happens to the traitor...we get a satisfying end.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this one while I was reading, but even a week after finishing I had already forgotten most of the details. I liked the viking aspect, the gods, and the setting; and the pacing was quick, which made for an easy read. I also found the prose to be enjoyable and engaging. But sadly the characters didn't do much for me. I didn't connect to any of them, and the romance moved a bit too quickly for me. I'm VERY picky with romances that center around fate or soulmates, because while I like it, it has to be done just right for it to not feel fake and insta-lovey. It also doesn't stand out amongst the other viking novels - i.e. Sky in the Deep, Beyond a Darkened Shore, Beasts of the Frozen Sun - and feels very similar to those mentioned. I do think many will enjoy this book, though!

This was a solid 4.5⭐

Liv was such a strong character. Life knocked her down and she just got back up and kept on going. Not to mention Calder and his loyalty, strength, and fierceness wrapped up in a yummy package 📦

Key takeaway: Beauty and happiness can be found in the wake of tragedy and Casey did a fantastic job capturing the emotions involved in the tragedy and then the path towards acceptance and regrowth.

Tropes:

In the time of Vikings, the world is cold and brutal. Born into a family of warriors, Liv Eriksson and her brother Hodor have trained since childhood to fight for their shields, allowing them the right to join the longships in battle raids. To prove their strengths and ability to fight, each must defeat one of their parents in hand to hand combat, no quarter given. On the eve of their victories over their elders, at the winter celebrations, a visiting Jarl is murdered.
The melting snow and the first sign of flowers heralded the change of seasons. But it also brought death across the seas. Clan Wolf sailed in under the cover of fog destroying and killing everything in their path, leaving Liv’s life ebbing away as the waters flowed over her. Fenris Wolf had killed to avenge his father’s death but reveled in the slaughter and destruction. He began to believe himself to be invincible, to see himself as the Jarl of all the lands. He would conqueror other tribes, wipe the villages clean and take their lands for his own.
As Liv lay dying at the edge of the fjord, it is her hatred, her need for vengeance that gives her the strength to call out to the gods to save her long enough to kill Fenris Wolf, the beast who invaded her home leaving nothing but death and destruction behind. It was Skuld, the Norn who weaves the future, that would come to her aid. She would give Liv power filled with magical abilities that would strengthen Liv well beyond human capacity. Skuld could see that Fenris Wolf would bring Ragnaök, down upon them; she demanded vengeance and she would use Liv to get it.
Liv took the ashes of her family to form the ink for her runes, their bones to form her armor and staff that would protect her and strengthen her power, for there is power in blood, bone, and ink. But she would need help. Liv would gather the other clans together, use her powers to make them strong enough to battle Clan Wolf and their Jarl. Through her leadership and guidance, the clans would have a chance to stop the Wolf in his tracks.
Skögar Village was under attack by Clan Wolf. Calder had to save his people, force the raiders away from the village. She was there beside him on the deck of the longship, a spirit, one he could see through. Calder had lost the fire he had carried to the longship to burn the sails, as she reached out touching the sail, it ignited and flamed. With the firing of the sails, Calder was able to draw the rest of the Clan Wolf away from his village before they had completely destroyed it. Even as Calder sets out to raise the warning of Clan Wolf’s treachery, he wondered about the spirit. Instead he finds a living breathing Liv who shares the tale of death and destruction of her clan. Calder took Liv back to his Skögar where she would convince his people and another powerful Jarl to join forces in trying to stop Clan Wolf’s reign of terror. It would be Liv who lead of the army they gathered. She was the volva, the witch, they all feared, but she had the power to turn the tide of the battle to come.
It is a time of hardships, crippling winters, magic, gods, witches, greed, and love. Casey L. Bond brings it all together in this Viking fantasy that offers a bit of a twist to the Norns of Norse Mythology, There are well laid out battles, with the heartache of death and annihilation, but there is also hope. In spite of the harsh environment, constant threat of death, and raiding battles, many were farmers who fought for their families and their land. This young adult novel introduces the reader to young people who had a voice in clan life, taught to fight in great battles, and were such an important part of the village. Told mostly from Liv’s point of view, her love of her family, the heartache of losing them her need for revenge and then the realization that there is more to life then vengeance. There is a dusting of Calder as we learn of his life and how he connects to Liv that adds to the story. With twists and turns, love blooms on grounds that are soaked in blood. The reader sees the villain, tastes his hatred and greed, building the plan to stop him isn’t always a straight line. Liv changes as she battles to save the people she has grown to love; she finds a reason to fight to live but it may be too late. Even the Norns can learn from the humans that live under their rule. There are three Norns, weavers of the gods and men, who can change the present and the future, according to Casey L. Bond. In this tale there is power in the blood, bone and ink, but there is also rousing spirit in a good tale. The story is packed with life, not as we know it, but of days long past, even as it lives and breathes with the pages of the book. Thank you, Casey.

This book was such a fantastic detour from my normal fantasy, fairy tale fare. I wasn't sure what to expect, but having loved Casey Bond's other books, I had a feeling this one would be a treat.

“There is power in words,” the völva had said. “Power in blood…” There is power in rage, in death, and in ash. There is power in shield and ink and bone.

The beginning portrays a life filled with family and obligations, but also the constant threat of violence. It has a fair amount of gore and cruelty which adds to the gritty atmosphere.

From pure hatred and spite, from the ashes left in the wake of his cruelty, and from the flesh and bones of my loved ones, my destiny was spun… and his fate, sealed.

Liv is a fierce character, and becomes even more so as the book progresses. She became so much stronger than she ever could have dreamed because of the horrid day she lost her entire family. And even as she seemed fearsome and capable, inside there was turbulence and turmoil. A human side to a character that seemed as if she was becoming something other than human.

I stood taller, turning my spine into iron. “I am her vengeance, and I am mine. Fenris Wolf took everything from me, and I intend to repay the favor a hundred-fold. He will choke on my blade and know that he created the fury from which I was forged.”

Calder and Armund are just so damn precious. They along with Fell, Hilda, and even Tyr, become not so much a replacement, but a supplement to the family that Liv had torn away from her.

They were my family now. Skuld had given me a precious gift, not only of time, but of someone to love, something else to fight for and defend. I would kill Fenris to avenge my family. Blood spilled for blood spilled. But having someone to fight for, someone living, changed things. And fighting for someone I loved… changed everything. Skuld and her sisters were wise to unleash my heart.

I won't lie, even though the book description stated her whole family was murdered, I hoped Hodor would somehow make it out alive. Her whole family's death was quite traumatic, but his hit the hardest for me. He was one of my favorite characters despite having only known him for a short time.

“Where are you when you aren’t here with me?” I pressed. “I’m content.” Words truly did have power, because those two, simple words made it easier for me to breathe. They made the clenched fist around my heart relax. It made it easier to look at him and not look away. Most of the time, my guilt wasn’t worn like a blanket, lying heavily on my shoulders. It was a thick, wet clay that I sank further into with each step, one I couldn’t back out of no matter how hard I tried. One day, I knew it would smother me.

I really enjoyed this book. Delightful isn't quite the right word (considering the amount of trauma and violence), but it was a beautiful story of vengeance, redemption and love.

Wow. This was another "way beyond my expectations read". It was visceral, emotional, magical...I loved it. Her storytelling and writing are superb. Once I started it I was completely sucked in and couldn't put it down (and even though we know what happens at the beginning from reading the description it never felt slow, everything was necessary and helped build such an incredible story). It is also a definite cross genre winner for me, in addition to YA fantasy, its great for ALL fantasy fans, along with historical fiction fans - the story itself can appeal to such a wide audience.

The Breakdown: This is a Viking setting revenge sort of story, with some general good vs evil themes and some very cool Norse Mythology, Magic and Witchery tied in...along with some great characters I was really rooting for both Liv and Calder, and her secondary characters were a perfect blend for this story...she did a such a great job with this cast. Fast paced with good action sequences, great mystical aspects, some run ins with the Gods, and plenty of people problems, its both character driven and action packed.

For me Liv's journey was the strength of this book. From watching her entire settlement killed and then pretty much dying herself to becoming an actual tool of one of the Norn's and getting to enact her revenge on Earth and with a slew of new (sometimes creepy but always way cool) powers to her gathering of allies (and foes) alike, to the final confrontation - it was all just great storytelling. I loved the addition of some hotness with Calder, and her friendship with his father, her struggles with the villagers fearing her as a witch, those two crazy creepy witch twins, the Norn herself, and the specifics of the magic itself - so so cool (and where the Title comes in With Shield and Ink and Bone), the ink part, how she made it, the runes, and her Bone Wand (I want one!!) and eventually her final battle "bone regalia" I just loved it all.

I discovered this book on Instagram when she revealed the cover and I don't know, even though I hadn't read her before (and I'm not particularly drawn to Viking themes although I do like them when I read them) something just told me I was going to love it, I ended up ordering a signed hardcover from her and it came with a really cool character art card and justice tarot card - which I was great, I can't tell you how much I enjoy having character art to picture the authors vision of the characters while I read!

This was my first book of Bonds and I am definitely a fan (and ordering some of her others asap).

With Shield and Ink and Bone is a story of one girl's quest to avenge her family, and how it turns into something much more. Just as Liv Ericksson achieves her goal of becoming a Shield Maiden like her mother before her, a trail of death ensues that changes the course of her life forever. Left for dead by Fenris Wolf in a horrific attack that kills everyone in her village (including her family), Liv makes a deal with the norn Skuld to spare her life so she can take her revenge on the man who took everything from her. With a new lease on life and armed with dark magic, Liv crosses paths with Calder, a young man who is determined to put a stop to Wolf's trail of destruction, and the two soon forge a bond only breakable by death. Now Liv questions the very deal that saved her and the truth of what future she wants for herself--one that may be doomed from the start.
With Shield and Ink and Bone is a mouthful of a title but an enjoyable read all the same. I loved the fire inside our heroine Liv and how her storyline unfolds. The character development of someone willing to risk everything for revenge to someone who dreams of a future with the one she loves is always a fun story to follow. I loved the moments of wanting between Liv and Calder and how that relatonship develops. I also loved the vivid worldbuilding based on the Viking lore and Norse mythology that Bond employs here and how the world Liv inhabits has realy informed who she is. I also enjoyed learning about the norns such as Skuld, which is a part of Norse mythology I have never heard before. I only had a couple of issues with this book. One was the pacing. There were parts of the book where the pacing didn't hold my attention like others, and I found myself drifting away as I read those parts, which is probably a me issue more than it is an issue with the book or the writing itself. I also found myself unsure of how the magic system worked at times. But overall, With Shield and Ink and Bone is a story with a fierce heroine, a quest for revenge, and another unexpected purpose she finds along the way because of love.
