Witches, ghouls, and mind readers—oh my! Murder and mystery abound in this supernatural novel.
Vega Bloodmire has no problem with the label “villainous witch,” though she draws the line at being called a self-centered hag. Life isn’t easy being twenty-two, drop-dead gorgeous, and the most fashionable witch in all the land—especially while working as an intern teacher at a magical boarding school. Being young and beautiful is a curse.
A curse for everyone who underestimates her.
Vega finally thinks she has her student teaching figured out at Encantado Charter Academy. The lecherous tyrant of a mentor teacher who was supervising her is dead, she gets to do what she does best—boss people around—and she might even prove to her mother that she doesn’t need their family’s money to succeed in life. She can support herself in a career without anyone else’s help, live a somewhat normal life, and keep her ghoulish family secrets under wraps.
Unfortunately, all Vega’s well-laid plans go awry when she is framed for murder. Worse yet, she fears she may have revealed her darkest secret—one so awful she will be shunned by Witchkin society even if she can prove her innocence.
Vega is going to need to find the true culprit of the crime in order to save her reputation—and her life.
Enjoy this spin-off series from the world of Womby’s School for Wayward Witches. This book starts with Vega Bloodmire’s life before working at Womby’s when she was a new and inexperienced teacher at Encantado Charter Academy.
Clean, cozy, no sex or swearing, PG 13—perfectly fine for teens or grandmas who like paranormal mysteries at magical boarding academies.
I loved all of the Womby school books that I have read (11 so far), and Vega Bloodmire was one of my favourite characters in them. So, it was great to see how she had become the terrifying teacher/person she is at Womby’s. At Womby’s, Vega is always seen as sadistic and only interested in furthering her own ends. Yet, no-one teaches at Womby’s unless they care about the kids – the pay is poor, the kids troublesome, and the administration (at least until Jeb was got rid of) inept and corrupt. And Vega is a first-class excelsior – one of the all-time best (even if she says it herself). So why work at Womby’s? In this book we see Vega as a student teacher, find out one of her major secrets, and see her in her most vulnerable state. In later life, she has serious trust issues, and never lets anyone get close to her. Now, we get an inkling why. Vega is desperate to become a good teacher and she is not going to let her incompetent and lazy mentor get in her way. Especially not when he turns up dead, and she may be blamed for his murder. Vega turns into a sleuth and uses some forbidden magic to reveal the real murderer. This was a wonderful read, and I would recommend it to anyone who has liked the Womby books – but also to new readers as it can stand on its own. I am really looking forward to reading more in this series.
Even thought his was the first book of this series I felt pretty lost throughout the whole story. Not much information was given about characters which made it hard to understand what was going on at times. At the end even though the crime was solved it still felt like there was a cliff hanger because I felt things were left unanswered. This is a book is one you will want to be comfortable with, blackmail for s3xual favors, pregnant teen unaliving. Overall my rating would be 2.5.
Quirky characters, sense of humour & use of words like anencephalic, what’s not to love? Sarina Dorie is a wonderful writer. This particular book is a blend of cozy mystery with witchy fantasy. It’s not often you can read of paranormal student teachers in the process of completing their internship at a charter school. As for my, an ex archaeologist & librarian’s, favourite sentence? “The library was the only place anywhere that rivaled her love of cemeteries.”
It felt like I dropped into the middle of a series rather than starting at book one. The main character has a few good moments but generally comes across as cold and unfeeling which dampened my enthusiasm of the book. Overall, the plot moves along well and is engaging. I didn’t see the ending coming which was nice. A solid 3-star book. Good to skim or read quickly.
This book was a decent read. The writing was enjoyable, however, the main character was pretty insufferable. She refused to have any real friendships for a reason that was unclear and was outright mean to people she wanted help from.
Occasionally the main character would mention how she's going against her family's wishes to be a teacher but it did not seem she liked teaching or even the students at all.
The magic system appeared to be a new concept, yet there were no details given about how it worked. There are different realms in this world that are not explained.
This book was marketed to pre-teens/teens and it covers several heavy topics.
I'd be interested to read more by this author but most likely not this series.
ARC kindly provided via Hidden Gems in exchange for an honest review.
An interesting story that will appeal to young adult. Vega Bloodmire joins the other beginning teachers in a school full of witches, ghosts, ghouls and other assorted creatures of the night. Mysteries and hijinks abound as the school suffers a catastrophe and Miss Bloodmire and others try to solve the mystery.
This was a free book. The only thing great about it was that it was a quick read. Possibly should have read the author's previous books to better understand the witching world created in the book. Vega, the main character, was hard to like. I didn't feel any empathy for any of the other characters. However, I'm sure there are readers who will like this series. It just wasn't for me.
It wasn't for me. I liked the sluething parts, but the fillers werent my thing. The ending was pretty good though. I feel like maybe there was a previous book I was supposed to read before this one, It read like it had a backstory that I was supposed to understand immediately.
This is my introduction into the world of Vega and I’m glad I began here. Too Ghoul for School is essentially the first of a prequel series, THE VEGA BLOODMIRE WICKED WITCH MYSTERY, and it did not disappoint. I felt like I was reading out of order at first, like watching episodes 1-3 and then 4-6 instead of the order that they were released, but it was fine. This Paranormal fantasy kept me on my toes. I love a good mystery/who done it in the mix as well and why not bring in the education side, too!
Not every character is meant to be liked or understood, that’s the point of their journey. They need to have something that shifts as the story progresses, whether it’s in one book or over the course of a series. I like Vega, she’s a complex character, being mixed with so many creatures as well as human and having to navigate the world that would hate and mistreat her if they knew who/what she truly was. She has to create a version of herself that is acceptable for the society she lives in. Now isn’t that a reflection of life many people live!
Time for a quick teacher appreciation moment! I loved the deep dive into the character as a teacher. With the subtle things mentioned throughout the story, I could see Sarina Dorie teacher side coming through. As a former teacher, I related to Vega. Thank you for that!
I look forward to continuing the journey with Vega!

Vega Bloodmire is a trainee teacher - an intern at Encantado Charter Academy. Her plan to become the best teacher ever is against her mother’s wishes, and it’s not going brilliantly as her mentor teacher is an utterly horrid person (who among other things is avoiding filling out the necessary paperwork). Vega also has to contend with her ghoul heritage which makes her crave dead flesh - very much a secret, as most people would hate and despise her if they knew. And having to share a tiny dorm room with the other intern, Amy, who was brought up in the mortal realm and dresses in pastel (shudder) is not helping things. But then their mentor is murdered - although the school principal says he had a heart condition, it looks suspiciously like he exploded all over the classroom… and is someone trying to frame Vega for the killing?
Sassy main character with lots of attitude? Check. Fantasy and magic with humour? Check. Murder mystery? Check. I adored this book, especially the clever blend of cozy mystery and fantasy, with a small dose of horror threaded through (well, Vega does want to eat dead bodies…). Vega is a great main character - on the outside she is confident and perhaps a teeny bit arrogant (she is well aware that she is beautiful, and indeed the best dressed person at the school) but she is funny, clever and genuinely cares about people, even though she tells herself she doesn’t - only people who deserve it, though. And she loves books.
I was delighted to discover this is the first in a series of 18 books, and am already reading book 2 - Ghoulfriend. Is there anything better than discovering a writer you like has an enormous catalogue of books just waiting to be enjoyed?
This is an honest review in exchange for a complimentary copy from Voracious Readers Only.
Dorie has done it again!! Another intriguing, hard to put down, and drawing you in story about a major character in her world of Witchkin.
Great mystery to read. you will get so involved in this world that you might forget to figure out the mystery.
Vega Bloodmire doing her student teaching. This is her early years before Womby School.Must read for those who know Vega and for those just joining the fun.
This review is hard to write. For those of you that are entering this works with this as your first book: Welcome!!! You get to meet Vega when she is young. It gives you insight and when you go to read the Womby School and others series, you will have a different perspective of Vega. I envy you. I also do not want to give anything away. I want you to enjoy it as much as I do, but I am also hoping that it will encourage to read the other series.
For those of us who have read the other series and are acquainted with Vega, this is a peak into her personality. It explains somethings for me that I wondered about then. This book is like going back in time and getting questions answered. It will help explain things in the other newer series also ( like Son of Fae, et. al.).
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. So much that I took a bit longer to read so I could fully enjoy it. Looking forward to more of Vega's story.
Fun and easy to read mystery. Guaranteed to enjoy it. Check out the other books and series involving this world and characters.
Vega Bloodmire's assignment as a teacher intern at Encantado Charter Academy takes on a terrible twist as her mentor is killed. Vega can't graduate if she can't finish her internship, so is motivated to solve the mystery. Adding to her motivation, she thinks she is the primary suspect and the Witchkin Council is coming to investigate. We learn about her first mentor, Mrs. Swan, who disrespected Vega and why she traded for the lecherous, alcoholic Mr. Milton. We read about some of the advances he made to Vega and others and her reactions and punishments. Vega solves the mystery using her Celestor power, her keen intellect, and her secret Ghoul powers. As she says at the end, "when disaster strikes again and students, staff, or humans are murdered, the community will need someone with moral ambiguity to solve their problems and bring justice to those who had committed crimes". Part amateur sleuth, part vigilante—and all parts wicked—Vega Bloodmire would be the witch to call. A great story, with humor, mystery, Vega's trademark snark, out-of-the-box solutions to problems, and her indomitable will to bring miscreants to justice. If you want even more of Vega, read especially the Womby's School for Wayward Witches series and the later books of the Son of a Fae series when she becomes Queen of the Raven Court.
This is my first of this series by Sarina. I really enjoyed it. Witch books are not generally my go to, but this entry in the realm was rather interesting. It was set in another realm(?) but had all the elements of the human world.
Vega is a ghoul, which is apparently not as acceptable a creature as some, who is a teacher in training. Her mentor is a pig of many sorts and seems like he is pretty good at hiding his misdeeds.
That is, until when he practically blows up all over the classroom for no obvious reason. Things might have gotten better but who ever blew him up is determined to pin it all on Vega. While they had their differences, she had no intention of blowing him to bits.
She must find who is responsible before she gets the blame. Along the way, Vega realizes that every has secrets and not everyone is who they seem to be on the surface. Who made the mess and will the culprit be revealed before it is too late?
It was a neat quick read and I enjoyed it. I am looking forward to the next installment.
I received a free copy from herself and am volunteering an honest review for the benefit of others.
Never having read a Vega Bloodmire book, I was unsure how well I'd enjoy Too Ghoul for School. I was very pleasantly surprised! Vega is doing her student teaching with a less than desirable teacher. Mr. Milton is everything a decent person is not. He winds up dead, seemingly by explosion, as in his body exploded all over the classroom! Vega's worried she may be targeted as the culprit because of Milton's horrible nature and her own contentious attitude. Plus, there is her secret to worry about. Did Milton know? Does anyone else know? Will the Witchkin council discover the secret when they investigate? It's up to Vega to do her own investigation into Mr. Milton's death. She needs to work quickly to find out who was responsible for the murder. Too Ghoul for School is a quick, fun read that has a depth to it which made it hard to stop reading. Sarina Dorie is a natural writer who develops her characters perfectly and adds enough detail so you're reading words AND seeing pictures. Vega isn't a particularly likable character. And I love that about her! And want to read more of her adventures! Starting book 2 now...
I love Sarina’s humor! Who else could make solving a murder fun with all the subtle jabs at the hypocrisy of people no matter what walk of life they may find themselves in!
I think you’ll fall in love with Vega (but you’d better not tell her because she wouldn’t like it!) I mean ghouls can’t have friends right? Well just maybe she will find out they can in the long run.
I recommend this book to all those who enjoy a story that will keep your attention and will also tickle your funny bone! If you’ve read Sarina’s books before you know what I’m saying because like me you can’t wait for your next “fix” from this wonderful author! To those who may have never read one of her books well here is the perfect book to start with! Afterwords there is a multitude of her books to read which will make you smile, laugh and just enjoy that you have found a new author you will want to keep reading for a very long time!
With all the turmoil around us why not do yourself a favor (for which your “self” will thank you for) and start this book today. You really will be glad you did, I guarantee it!!
This is defined as a cozy mystery and that is exactly what it is. It also says it is for adults but I'm not so sure about that. Maybe I read too many thriller/horror and that's what makes this feel like it's written for a younger audience. I also traditionally don't read 'cozy mystery' so I'm guessing they are not supposed to be super suspenseful?
I haven't read any of the authors other books including the series to which this is a prequel (but can be read at any time). Look past the cheesy title and it's a fun quick read if you like the genre.
Pros: didn't want to put down. I enjoyed the book enough to put the whole series on my TBR list (just not at the top).
Cons: talks multiple times about something terrible in past but we never find out what happened, but maybe this is revealed later on in the series?
Title is terrible, IMO. Makes it sound like it's aimed to middle schoolers.
I received this book for free and I voluntary reviewed. The thoughts and opinions are my own.
Our heroine thought she had things figured out until she gets framed for murder. After that the stakes just keep climbing.
This is book one of the series, which is a spin off from the author's other long running series. That being said, it is not necessary to have read the other series to enjoy this one.
This is a cozy mystery story with a paranormal academy setting. The story is very well written and easy to read with a well developed and detailed setting. One of the advantages of a spin off series is the groundwork is already laid and just has to be presented for the new audience as was done here. The characters are as diverse and intriguing as one would expect, providing a very nice cast to work with. And the plot itself is fun and full of twists and turns which certainly kept me engaged. Overall, it was a very fun story and I look forward to more books in this series.
Highly recommended.
I received an ARC from Hidden Gems for review purposes.
Vega Bloodmire is part ghoul, and this is a problem, because the supernatural world disapproves of ghouls, necromancy and any kind of blood or death magic. Forced to become vegan to avoid manifesting any of her ghoulish attributes, Vega is trying to complete her internship as a student teacher. Her fulfilling her obligations are complicated by a perverted supervising instructor, who has decided to block Vega's successful completion. When he is graphically murdered, Vega has to find the real killer to avoid being falsely accused of the crime.
I really enjoyed this book. Initially it was difficult to relate to Vega because of her ghoulish aspects, but as the book progresses, you discover more of the challenges she's faced, and how she's addressed her difficulties in interpersonal relationships because of her fear of discovery coupled with her fear of loss. Worth five stars. I look forward to reading the sequel.
**Trigger warning for this book, if you have been sexually assaulted you may want to avoid this book as it’s throughout the entire storyline. **
Had the author chosen a different crime for the characters to commit (regarding the sexual assault) I think this book could have been a 5 star. I really liked the main character. I liked that she was a bit cold but still melted with the nice personality of Amy. I also enjoyed the twists in the story. The mystery of the murder and the secrets uncovered were well thought out and executed perfectly. I loved the magic involved and the different kinds of magical beings. I also enjoyed some of the humour that was thrown in, it added a nice touch. I liked how the story flowed and the way it was told. I definitely think had Vega shown more of her spunky side it would have enhanced the book even more as that was my favourite parts 😊.
Overall a good read! I received this book from voracious readers and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I received a free copy of Too Ghoul for School by Sarina Dorie, through Voracious Readers Only. The following review is my own honest opinion of the book. Too Ghoul for School is a prequel spin-off series of the Womby’s School for Wayward Witches series by the same author. This particular series focuses on the character of Vega Bloodmire while she is still a young teacher, herself still learning things. I haven't any knowledge of the Womby's novels prior to picking up this book, and although there are times other places or events are mentioned, I don't feel it's necessary to have read any of them in order to enjoy the story. Some of the language and terminology used may be uncomfortable or difficult for younger readers. I can imagine Vega's way of thinking and her approach to dealing with problems, or even how she interacts with other people might upset some readers and put them off, but I rather enjoyed her no nonsense approach.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Voracious Readers Only, and let me tell you, I devoured this book! I was captivated by the imagery, and while the character of Vega seems a little prissy, it soon becomes apparent how much she gave up to become a teacher! Making friends doesn't come easy, as her ego seems determined to keep her aloof. But once she has decided she is your friend, she will go to bat for you and protect you every step! It just happens to be while solving a mystery.
I can't wait to delve into the rest of this series! But I got sidetracked.
I enjoyed this writing style so much, I found another series that I began immediately where Vega pops up in, on the peripheral. If you like magic, mystery, hidden powers, and tragedy mixed in for good measure, Sabrina Dorie has books right up your alley!
It isn't often I am hooked right away! Grab your copy, and be ready to be whisked away!
Too Ghoul for School by Sarina Dorie is a prequel to the Womby school series but can be read without reading that series. As a first time reading one of Sarina Dorie's books, I was unfamiliar with the Womby series. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I could not put it down! This book is a cozy mystery with the paranormal aspect that I enjoy. The main character, Venga Bloodmire, is a ghoul witch who is working as a student teacher. Her teacher mentor and she does not get along and often quarrel. When he is murdered, she has to try to solve the murder to prove her innocence. This book is a quick read as it keeps you wanting to know what happens. I could not stop reading until the very end (and then I wanted more)! I can't wait to read the rest of this series and also the author's other works! I highly recommend this book to everyone!
So this book is a good book for most ages and seems to written for young teens to young adults. Just one warning for those with young teens, there are implications of sex and abuse.
When a teacher dies the race is on to find out who killed them. The most likely suspect is the intern teacher Vega Bloodmire who seems to always fight with that teacher. She must find the killer before the Witchkin Council comes to question everyone at the school or her secret may come out.
In her search for the killer she finds she has allies that she never would have expected. She uncovers secrets about the teacher that was killed and finds it hard to find anyone who didn't have a motive to kill that teacher.
It was fun to read to find out how far Vega went to make sure her secret was safe.
Too Ghoul for School (Encantado Charter Academy Cozy / Vega Bloodmire Wicked Witch Mystery, #1), my second read from author Sarina Dorie and the first book in Encantado Charter Academy Cozy / Vega Bloodmire Wicked Witch Mystery, #1 series. Although I own a number of her books I’d never gotten around to reading one until I read Tardy Bells & Witches Spells, the first book in Womby’s School for Wayward Witches back in 2018. One thing lead to another and here over 2 years later with the next read. My mistake. Well-written mystery with unexpected twists throughout. So very enjoyable I couldn't turn the pages fast enough I look forward to my next read from this author which will be Ghoulfriend (Encantado Charter Academy Cozy / Vega Bloodmire Wicked Witch Series #2)! (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
This story starts off with Vega being a student teacher at Encantado Charter Academy. She wants to teach students how to protect themselves early in their education. She has a terrible teacher that she is working under. He is every kind of terrible. She recommends him to her roommate and she starts working as his student teacher as well. Next thing you know the terrible teacher is killed and it is up to Vega to find the killer before she is blamed for his death and the fact that she is part ghoul is discovered. A great whodunit. I was given a free copy of this book and this is my honest review.
This is a prequel to the Womby School For Wayward Witches series. In this book, you are introduced to Vega Bloodmire, who is working as an intern teacher at a magical boarding school, When Vega's mentor is discovered, well, blown up in his classroom, and Vega was recently overheard threatening him, she has to do everything in her power to clear her name. I loved the Womby School For Wayward Witches series, so I was excited to read this and get a glimpse into Vega's backstory. This was a fun mystery, with quirky characters, and it was delightful. If you are a fan of fantasy fiction, then you will love this!
I was given this book to read by Voracious Readers in exchange for a honest review.
I have not read any of the authors other books and first impression of this book was that I was going to be a little too old to enjoy it but would have loved it when I was younger. How wrong I was! Even though I think it is aimed at younger audiences I loved it. The characters were all interesting and the story line had enough twists to keep me reading. There are a lot of references to the main characters past that are not explained in this book which definitely make me want to read more to find out what happened to her. Will now be checking out all the authors other books and following this series.
Vega Bloodmire is student teaching at Encantado Charter Academy. When Vega’s sleazy mentor is killed after they are overheard arguing, Vega becomes the number one suspect. Vega sets out to prove her innocence and uncover the real murderer. I have not read the Womby’s School for Wayward Witches book series...yet. If you haven’t read them either, don’t let that stop you from reading this book. I was drawn into the story right from the start and can’t wait to see what is up next in this series.
Vega Bloodmire has never been one of my favorite characters in Sarina Dorie’s world, but her backstory has cast a different light on her. She’s not hard-wired — she thinks — to have feelings or friendships. It’s fun to watch the cool, elegant Vega as a student teacher trying to teach, solve a murder and protect the weepy innocents. She’s also protecting her own secret: she’s a ghoul, avoiding temptation to eat human flesh. I really enjoyed this book, and Vega, too. Sarina’s character-building, and the world of magical beings she creates, once again provides can’t-put-down reading!
I'd like to thank the author and publisher for letting me have the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
Not sure why it took me so long to read this, but I'm just getting used to reading from a kindle and not a physical book, think I need to play with the settings more to stop it hurting my eyes.
That being said, this story draws you in and holds you captive. I really enjoyed the juxtaposition between the ghoul and witch elements to the story often encapsulated by smells and tastes.
