The year is 1950, and a great tragedy has struck the town of Crowford. Three local men have been killed in a storm, after their fishing boat the Mercy Belle sank. A mysterious fourth man, however, was rescued. Nobody knows who he is, or what he was doing on the Mercy Belle... and the man has lost his memory.
Five years later, messages from the dead warn of impending doom for Crowford. The ghosts of the Mercy Belle's crew demand revenge, and the whole town is being punished. The fourth man still has no memory of his previous existence, but he's married now and living under the named Edward Smith. As Crowford's suffering continues, the locals begin to turn against him.
What really happened on the night the Mercy Belle sank? Did the fourth man cause the tragedy? And will Crowford survive if this man is not sent to meet his fate?
Amy Cross writes novels and short stories in a number of genres, mainly horror, paranormal and fantasy. Books include The Farm, Annie's Room, The Island, Eli's Town and Asylum.
Amy Cross is that quintessential period British horror writer that you want to subscribe to. This book gave some back story to the first one in this series. The ending was fantastical and warped but it was an enjoyable read.
Mysterious, ghostly, intriguing and clever, this second story about Crowford is set in the 1950s where the people of the town are faced with strange events.
I enjoy this author's stories because there is usually something unexpected...not disappointed.
Fast-paced with only a few typos, this tale was nicely done.
MS. Cross has quite the imagination and I'd really like to know where she comes up with her ideas for her books, especially the plot twists.
She's such a prolific writer that it's hard to imagine someone who has so many ideas actually getting any sleep! Her mind must be on overdrive all day, every day!
This story was a fascinating one that I've personally never heard told before. It's possible she's re-written, or taken the idea, from an old mariner's tale, but if so, it's none I've ever heard. Many times I'll read one of her books and see hints of something that's been way overdone, so it was refreshing to read something completely different this time.
I'm looking forward to the next Crowford book. Since they're both only about 150 pages so far, I'm hoping she'll consider putting them together into one complete collection
Nobody writes better ghost stories than her! This book is haunting.....I never saw the end coming. To the editor... Please stop letting Ms Cross books out so fast that you leave in so many typos and errors. Maybe proofread it twice by two different people.
The author wove a tale of two people being one. That's okay but then she couldn't explain it or even attempt to explain it. She just wrote it was unexplainable. Having read several Cross stories with enjoyment, this one left me with . disappointment
Normally I like this author , but this book is a slow read, no real scares and a sea story that has been told better by others. Slow and uninteresting.
I fell in love with Crowford and its mysteries in the first book of this series. So much so thar I bought all of them as soon as I finished it. Couldn't wait to dive into this one and find out more about the town and its inhabitants. But this second book... wow! I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the fact that it was even written by the same person. SMH.. if the next book doesn't disappoint me, I'll finish the series and probably buy more from Cross. But if it's as bad as this one was, I'll write off my loss and never read her work again.
Johnny froze, and in that moment he realized that the air all around felt so much colder than before. At the same time, he was able to hear a splashing sound coming from the water. For a few seconds, he was too scared to look, but then he saw that Hazel's expression was filled with horror as she stared past him. Slowly, he turned and saw three ghostly figures emerging from the water and stepping up onto the beach, and he realized that he recognized all three men.
I certainly won't be dipping my toes in the briny at Brighton in a hurry. Nor will I build any sandcastles, neither will any other reader once they have read The Revenge of the Mercy Belle. Another thrilling book with lots of twists and turns as your journey leads you from the horrific night the Mercy Belle sank with all hands on board through to the end when....... I'm not telling you, you will have to read it for yourselves.
This book was a bit different to what I usually read. Ships and the sea don’t usually do much for me but because it was by Amy cross I read it and enjoyed it. I haven’t yet been disappointed in any read of Amy cross.
Big QUESTION,,,,, How is JOHNNY,,,, was there a time work, was there a hick up in the ream of things, Once. You finally finish the story , You may find yourself going back in the story line to see if you missed something,,,,,,, DUTCH,,,
I just don't know how she does it! Every book by this author always seems to have an incredible twist that you DO NOT see coming. This one was especially like "Holy sh*t, I never would have guessed!!" Next up is the 3rd book in the series, The Ghost of Crowford School.
I may have been a tad generous with my marking of this story. Perhaps 3 stars would have been fairer but, the unexpected twist at the end was worth an extra star. It was a clever plot and an enjoyable tale, especially on Christmas Eve.
I had already written my review when I inadvertently deleted it. This story was very different from books I've read before. Hazel was my favorite character and I loved hints of other characters from "Nelson Street".
Sorry this book is awful, it starts slow and continues to drag on and on. The characters are undeveloped and hard to have any interest in. This book comes across as a first attempt at writing. Very disappointed
Alright alright… I almost DNF but it’s so short I pushed my way through. I’m not huge into sea stories but this whole series is a must for me. The ending made it all worth it. Don’t trust the sea… don’t trust the sand…
There were so many twists and turns in this book. I had a hard time figuring out what was going on but it all came together in the end and I love that. I recommend this series to everyone.
This one was a far better story than the first one in the series. It can also work as a standalone story, so I would recommend this over the first book. The story has some major twists and the fisherman theme was a unique touch.
I live in a seaside village and absolutely love sailing and swimming in the ocean, so stories that deal with with what might be going on beneath the waves freak me out quite a bit. The ending also plays with time and identity in a way that made my head spin, and lifts the story far above the norm.
Edward Smith turned out to be Johnny. Johnny's going back in time was interesting. But not a great twist. I would have like to have known what the small metal object that Johnny found, was
This was truly a great story. I genuinely loved the characters and the story line too.I would definitely recommend this book to family and friends alike!!!!!
Really enjoyed this one, a real twist to the tale that was really not expected. Definitely would not like to live in Crawford and I'm only two books in.....
Thought it started out really good but then it becomes slow and the ending is not great. Nice little read but easily past up as a mystery or ghost story
