12/25/20- I was so sad that I did not love this as much as I loved book 1. The premise was interesting and it started out good but the writing got very repetitive. During the intimate scenes the heroine would just say "Sebastian" over and over. I could not keep from rolling my eyes and skimming. Nothing kept me invested in this story. I'm not giving up on this series and will keep an open mind for book 3.

6/24/21 - Scratch keeping an open mind for book 3 LOL! See my review and read at your own risk.

It was lovely little story. Two people haunted by their trauma. Sebastian and Luisa were just so nice, like really nice people. The romance was sweet and cute.

The h is a beauty, quiet and self controlled. The H compromises her even as he rescues her from evil OM. He's very grumpy but she's kind and understanding to him. I loved her kindness and careful approach with the H. Loved this book.

Audible Edition!

Sebastian Fieldings the Duke of Waverly and Lady Louisa Darby, was a storyline I have read many times. But this was not carried out as well as other authors. The narrator was just okay. Some of the scenes in the story were identical to a story I read just a week ago! That was weird! All in All the story was okay the ending was good!

This is book two of the Darby Sisters and Louisa's story and marriage to the Beastley Duke..the Duke of Waverly. Although it started off very well, it kind of lost its flavor. I thought it dragged a bit and then tried to redeem itself closer to the end. All around it was a nice read.

3.5 🌟.

Its a decent, quick, sweet read. I preferred Eliza and Dax's story to this . This was a bit too simple in plot and characters. Both Lousia and Sebastian are really pleasant but it just was a little lacking.

Im happy she has brought in Viv's wayward husband and am assuming book 3 will be their second chance. Looking forward to it.

But was he a beast?

This is the story of 2 strong willed people broken as children living through and with grief resulting from situations that neither of them caused. Their lifelong memories and trauma were a result of misunderstandings and misinterpretation of events seen through the eyes of children.
Three quarters into the story, I finally got it!
Humorous. Applauds to the strong determined heroine. I absolutely loved the way she kept her hateful mother by marriage in check. The hero was aw-right. A little too guarded but understandable as the personality was finally uncovered.
Nice HEA.

Excellent

This was another of my favorite kind of stories, the marriage of convenience and the only problems faced are coming to grips with the marriage and admitting their love for each other.

I really liked Louisa and Sebastian, but I wanted to see more scenes where they interacted with the side characters.

I liked how Louisa and Sebastian got to know each other, and I liked their interactions. I really liked how even though they both had beliefs that were causing conflicts, they were still open to considering what their spouse was telling them.

Even though I really didn’t like Sebastian’s mother, I really liked the scenes where Louisa talked to her as they were hilarious. It was so refreshing to see a bad character actually being treated how they deserve, and I definitely hope to read more books like that.

Louisa had a lot of siblings and I wanted to see more scenes where they interacted, especially with the addition of Sebastian.

I want to continue with this series and although I don’t like what Vivianna’s husband did, I’m hoping that there will be some secret to help redeem him, or that he’ll grovel for most of the book.

(There will be spoilers at the end!)

Quite enjoyable! I loved how the hero was so perplexed by his feelings for the heroine. It was adorable. I also loved the heroine; she was sweet and unselfish and secretly hurting from a burden she’d been carrying since childhood.

Writing was excellent, very few typos to the point I honestly don’t actually remember running into any, and the story flow was smooth and fast-paced.

Heroes past is mentioned, as having had mistresses and unemotional entanglements with bored wives and widows. He is faithful in his marriage, but I got the impression he was sliming around with skanks after meeting heroine and I didn’t care for that. However, since it wasn’t explicitly mentioned that he was with women since meeting heroine, im not dropping any stars.

Heroine is a virgin. No cheating after marriage, and no abuse of any kind. No ow/om drama. HEA with epilogue.

I truly despise when the heroine is a fixer. It seems to be a trope that just won't die.

Heroine: Lady Louisa Darby, 20s. Sister of the Duke of Ravenwood.

Hero: Sebastian Fielding, age unknown. Duke of Waverly. Nickname: the Beastly Duke.

Date: unknown

How they meet: Louisa and Sebastian meet off-page. Her sister and his best friend are married.

What happens: While attending a musicale, a man tricks Louisa in order to get her alone in an attempt to compromise her. Sebastian comes to Louisa’s rescue, but then the two of them are caught alone together. To save Louisa’s honor, Sebastian covers by saying she has just agreed to marry him. Louisa goes along with the story.

Verdict: This is my first book by this author. I liked the chemistry between the characters and found the emotional complexity of their childhoods to be interesting in how it shaped their adult lives. I appreciated the fact that even though the hero didn’t want to love the heroine, he didn’t use it as an excuse to be truly cruel to her. This book’s main strength is the focus on the psychology of the characters and I enjoyed what that brought to the story. I thought the intimate scenes were well done and served a purpose in moving the story along. One thing that didn’t quite make sense to me was . My library did not have the first book in the series, but I thought this read perfectly fine as a standalone. I suspect these characters were probably introduced in book one and that reading it first might lead to understanding the secondary characters a bit better.

Steam-level: steamy and explicit

The Story & The Sacrifice:
This is the story of the second-to-last sister and her marriage to Sebastian. Their union is founded on honor after Sebastian heroically saves her from a near-rape incident. To protect her compromised status within the Ton, Sebastian steps in and marries her, saving her reputation. He was already deeply smitten with her before the incident, so marrying her was an act of genuine desire as well as chivalry. The sole heartbreaking caveat was his confession that he would never be able to truly love her. She braced herself for a life of a separate, loveless marriage. However, as the story unfolds, Sebastian begins to show her a different future, and their relationship slowly, compellingly begins to coalesce.

Points of Contention:
While the romance was engaging, a few elements in the story were jarring. The most constant issue for me was the heroine’s relentless desire to be a "fixer" for Sebastian. It felt repeatedly emphasized that she wanted to "fix" him. I found this dynamic frustrating; you cannot truly fix someone who is not ready to be fixed. While trying to help him heal from his personal demons is understandable, the constant use of the word "fix" felt misplaced and grated on my nerves.
Another specific detail that became quite distracting was the dialogue during their intimate moments. The heroine's only consistent utterance during their "smexy times" was Sebastian’s name. It was used with such redundancy, every single time she was "ravished" that it became almost comical and pulled me out of the moment. There are thousands of words that could convey passion and urgency, but the repetitive use of his name felt ridiculous and frankly, like a lazy writing choice.

Final Verdict:
Overall, this was an okay read, but it suffered from being very slow-paced. The plot does feature some engaging twists and turns, culminating in a satisfying reveal near the end. Despite my frustrations with the 'fixer' complex and the repetitive bedroom dialogue, it's a solid historical romance for readers who enjoy a slow-burn narrative focused on duty and eventually, love.

The Duke and the Lady, Book 2 in The Unwanted Dukes series, was about Sebastian Fielding, the Duke of Waverly (aka the Beastly Duke), and Lady Louisa Darby, the second eldest daughter of the sixth Duke of Ravenwood, sister to the now seventh Duke of Ravenwood.
Tricked by a scoundrel, Louisa found herself in a compromising situation. Sebastian, fearing for her safety, followed into a darkened room. Defending her honor, he swiftly dealt with the situation, only to find himself and Louisa in a position where he had to offer marriage to her.
Because of certain things that happened in his life, Sebastian had decided he would never allow himself to love anyone. In fact, he had been determined to never marry. Only honor had forced him to protect Louisa's reputation. It wasn't until the wedding night, however, that he informed HER of that decision...which shattered her.
Believing herself to be responsible for the death of their mother when she was five years old, Louisa had set herself up to never cause anyone else any further pain or tragedy. So, when she found herself compromised, she decided to "fix" things by marrying Sebastion to protect him..and her sister Johanna. She didn't want either of their reputations to be tarnished by her choices. Louisa was intent on being the perfect duchess for Sebastian so as to never cause him embarrassment or scandal.
As secrets from the past began to unravel for both Sebastian and Louisa, pain, anger, remorse, and regret rose to the surface. There was also a load of chemistry and passion for the couple. There was a good deal of angst and drama, sprinkled with only a touch of humor.
This book definitely earned a 5-star rating and a place with the other Keeper for the shelves novels.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

“She was all of those nonsensical things that inspired bards to write sonnets. She lit up the room by simply walking into it. She filled the space about her with laughter and warmth. She made him feel warm on a cold, rainy day.
All of that dribble, God damn her.”

“It was one thing for them to be discovered, and he had saved her honor by claiming an impending marriage. But it was another to pledge his life to her.”

“I had no plan to wed at all until I met Louisa.”

“The rest of the ceremony he could tell anyone very little about but what Louisa looked like, that—that he knew by reading the memory it had stamped on his heart.”

“I can’t fall in love with you.”

“It was there all at once and all together, but she knew that wasn’t how it started. That wasn’t how love came upon a person surely. She loved him for the way he bantered with her sisters, for the way he protected his best friend, for the way he’d protected her, for his unfailing sense of loyalty and honor.
She loved him.”

“His heart squeezed so much he was sure it would stop beating entirely, and in that moment, with her spread out before him, bathed in moonlight, he knew.
He’d fallen in love with her”

“That’s what it was like to be with Louisa. That’s what it was like to fall in love with her.”

“Why would you—”
“Because I wanted you to love me.” ... “Her proclamation echoed in his ears, and he wanted nothing more than to tell her he already loved her. But she’d proven him right.
Love was too dangerous.”

“I first fell in love with you in the moonlight, and in the moonlight was where I wanted to tell you how much I love you”

“They would say that it was just like her to be brought down by a litter of puppies.”

The Duke and The Lady by Jessie Clever

Ms. Clever had one goal in mind with her Unwanted Duke series: To cause your heart to ache and break before slowly gluing it back together.

As with the first book of the series, this story hit me hard.

Louisa has a secret which had wracked her with guilt. The only way to hide her pain is through a happy demeanor. She has a mission to fix all of her sisters’ problems and see to their happiness. After all, what better way to hide pain than to busy oneself with other’s problems.

Sebastian, the Beastly Duke, is pragmatic and matter-of-fact, until Louisa bursts into his life, stirring up feelings he has had to suppress. He is a brooding Duke, one of my favorites, but there was a time or two I wanted to throttle him!

The two are thrust together to cover up a scandal (over seeing puppies!) and find everything they have believed for years to be turned completely upside down. Secrets are uncovered and old wounds have been opened and healed for both our hero and heroine. They navigate their relationship with each other as well as themselves in such a relatable way.

My only complaint was it ended too soon. I loved Louisa and Sebastian! 💕

Grab a glass of wine and a tissue or two before settling into your settee for a read!

For anyone who's read my reviews, I think it's safe to say you know I don't have high hopes for most of my Chirp audiobook sale buys. 😂 I tend to buy out there books that I've never heard of and this one is no exception.

Lady Louisa Darby has been plagued by her mother's death since she was a child. She's carried the guilt of being the one who got her mom ill after all. Because of this, she's extra attentive and selfless where her sisters are concerned. She's especially concerned about maintaining a good standing reputation where her younger sister's marriage prospects are concerned. So, when she gets cornered at a ball and the gentleman attempts to assault her, she's panicked but doesn't expect rescue from the Beastly Duke Sebastian Fielding. Rescue her he does though and offers to marry her. The only catch? He refuses to fall in love and she refuses to give up on him. Who will win in this heart tug of war?

I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. It had a scrappy heroine and a Duke that had some attitude. The spice was nice and the plot was solid. Definitely recommend!

DNF at about 60%

Yes I DNF'd this and yes I am still giving it 1.5 stars. My reasons are thusly:

1. I fell asleep listening to the audiobook and missed like an hour and can't be bothered to go back and listen to it so I've decided to give up. This is nothing against the book itself just my general apathy.

2. I cannot get over the narrator's voice for the MMC. She makes him sound like the guy who played Dumbledoor in the first Harry Potter movie. A scraggly old man voice is not conducive to an attractive male lead.

3. The story itself seemed fine. Granted I did fall asleep, but again that was on me not the book necessarily. I liked that the characters seemed to talk to each other. It seemed to take no time at all before the guy was telling his secrets to the lady which I kind of appreciated. I just didn't appreciate his voice.

This is #2 in the Unwanted Dukes series and follows Lady Louisa and Sebastian, Duke of Waverly. There wasn't as much pining in this one as in the first book, but I still very much enjoyed it.

Louisa is a badass, and her interactions with the Viscountess had me screaming with laughter. Sebastian had a little more insta-love for Louisa than I anticipated, but his brusque nature was highly enjoyable.

SPOILER: When Sebastian gives her the hat pin I about died. The urge to not just take care of her but make sure she took care of herself was heart wrenching.
I liked the spice in this book more than the first one. Louisa was a virgin but with a lot less awkwardness towards 🌶 and I loved that!

Overall, I really loved this. Definitely recommend the series so far!

Regency Romance

A regency romance, with a marriage of convenience at its heart. I really enjoyed this story, I really liked the characters, and I thought it was well written and a nicely paced book.

Louisa is rescued from societal ruin by Sebastian who offers marriage to protect her reputation. From here grows the relationship and our understandings of this couples troubles and their pasts. Louisa and Sebastian were absolutely perfect for each other, both decent and caring people, but as with all good romance stories their feelings for one another take time to be realised.

A complete standalone story, although the second book in a series, I found this to be an engaging and entertaining read which I would definitely recommend for lovers of this genre.

Another great book by Jessie Clever

I like to read a series in order even if you can read them as a stand alone, because characters are usually introduced in the
previous book. Both the hero and heroin are holding on to secrets that they remember incorrectly that has shaped their lives
and they carry them as a burden. Once they learn the truth, they are freed from this burden and will live a happy and loving life.

I enjoyed the book and read it in two settings. It was hard to stop to get some sleep.

Much better

The chemistry between Louisa and Sebastian was great. I loved their opposite personalities and thought they complemented each other very well. I didnt really understand why Louisa was determined to not find out the truth about her mother's death. I felt like she was being kind of hypocritical by forcing Sebastian to confront the truth of his father's death when she was not willing to do the same. Overall I really enjoyed this.

This is another fabulous book in The Unwanted Dukes series. I loved the focus on the personal struggles of both Louisa, one of the Darby sisters, and Sebastian, nicknamed the Beastly Duke. Jessie Clever uses both of their past traumas to create a wonderful emotional romance with a touch of mystery that ultimately has an appealing happily ever after ending. I thoroughly enjoyed the hint at the end of the book to the next book in the series - I can’t wait.

This is a poignant and inspiring story that demonstrates that the truth will set you free. Sebastian and Louisa two broken souls end up married due to a compromising situation. It is within this relationship that they both find healing and peace in their souls. This is my first time reading a Jessie Clever novel and I’m excited to read more of her work. The characters are lifelike and relatable. The story pulls you in and makes you feel. R. K. Carulli
