Nix #5

A Killing Curse

Rate this book
One last time, the Phoenix will rise, and her flames will savage all who stand between her and those she loves…

The game is afoot, and I never saw it coming. A game of demons, angels and new breed of abnormal that is beyond anything else I’ve faced. A monstrosity that is bent on destroying every other abnormal on the planet. Only one thing can stop those who would wipe us out. A cursed weapon. Created by a person who has been dead a long time.

With an impossible task at hand, I can no longer face the darkness on my own. Even for me, the Phoenix, I need people at my back and my side.

The clock is ticking as my team and I race to find the curse, the weapon, and the final pieces that will save the world. And when the darkness rises to consume us, I will have to face my greatest fears.

Will I survive my own flames, or will I burn the world and my own existence up to save those I love?

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.

I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)

Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.

I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)

As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.

Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.

Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.

Annoying

The author seemed to forget about things that were established in previous books.

Killian is dying because he got hurt, and the main character is leaving him to go complete a task. She determines, instead of leaving him like he left her, she will shoot him so he isn’t left in a place with someone she doesn’t trust. As the “Phoenix” she has the ability to heal (this was mentioned in one of the previous books). It almost feels like she forgot about that. She did mention that she is afraid she would kill him if she tried to heal him. Um…if I remember right she healed someone once before in one of the other books? So this fear feels a little hollow.

She discovered that she has a brother in this book, but of course she doesn’t trust him.

One thing that bothers me about the story is that they keep going on and on about how the main character’s mother’s body was kept alive, and so they need someone who can communicate with the dead to find out what she knows. The mother’s soul was stuffed into a gun in the other books, and the mother purposefully misfired to destroy herself to save her daughter. There was an abnormal person at the end of that book who said that the mother’s spirit wasn’t completely gone from the gun. So theoretically they could put it back into the body. Yet the main character didn’t think of that at all, and is dead set on using a death talker to find out what her mom knew.

The annoying thing about these books is that when the characters have a problem that they need to fix, there’s a way to fix it that’s super difficult. And then what do you know, they are conveniently made aware of another option to fix the problem that’s easier. It makes the emotional weight of things that they potentially have to do worthless.

Also, the main character is frequently told that she has “mental blocks” in her mind that make it so she can’t access her full range of powers. Even after she seemingly defeats these mental blocks, she is still told she has them.

I know she is learning about herself and her powers, but it just seems too convenient that when there’s an issue, she is suddenly able to do something with her powers that resolves the issue.

The ending of the book made absolutely no sense. I read it and my only thought was…what just happened?

This book was not my favorite. The series wasn’t too good, and I was disappointed.

What's better than awesome ..............

Freaking awesome is the only way to describe this series .when I read the third book & thought Phoenix had her happy ever after I was sad to lose these amazing characters but the amazingly there was a fourth book but what did Shannon Mayer do to torture her loyal fans at the end of that fourth book ??? She put a dead end cliff hanger & then we had to wait for this book to come out & you know what ?? It was worth every second of the wait but I'm hoping there's a little twinkle of light at the end of this book that maybe more will be forthcoming from the Phoenix .

4 star listen I really enjoy the nix series narrator.
We see Rylee in this book very briefly which I thought was adorable.

I was expecting this to be the final book but I doubt this is the case. No cliffhanger but story is not complete.

I love nix as a fmc she’s so strong and doesn’t need anyone apart from her kids. The rest even those who she’s loves can be sacrificed for the greater good.

Great series I strongly recommend it.

A great end to an amazing series!

I will miss Nix and her world. Shannon outdid herself on this one. I loved some of the stops Nix made to gather information on her journey. It was so well done.

3.8

So I loved the first three Nix books. She is my favorite Mayer character. I know people loved Rylee but for me Nix in books 1-3 was the best. I loved that she was older more mature and had children that she fought for no matter what the cost just like any mother I know. It made her relatable in an otherwise I relatable fantasy novel.
However, book 4 was just out of left field and felt like we started a brand new series but with the same characters. Then we got to this book and because so many new characters came in book 4 and there was so much time between book 4 and 5 I’d forgotten half of the characters. I didn’t go back and reread 4 because I didn’t like it that much. So I plodded along through 5 and it was fine but not anything as awesome as 1-3.
I liked that she got a semi happy ending although we went from her falling into hell to everything being fine with no explanation. We also never heard about what happened with Vivian. I know Mayor likes to have her series connect and in this one we had a run in with Rylee but it just felt like these last two books opened the door to other stories and more questions that weren’t really necessary.
I didn’t love that her and Killian had little to no interaction in this book but I did like that he knew what she needed and that she was still the savior without him but women can be saviors and still show emotion and affection.
So if you were looking at this review before reading the series I’d say read 1-3 and skip 4-5 it adds nothing.

Rushed & Missing Chapter between 28 & 29?

SPOILER ALERT! Don’t read if you don’t want to know!

Does anyone else notice that the end of chapter 28 she says it was too late. Twice. And the chapter ends making you think that Easter is too late to use her magic to save Phoenix and Killian and Ruby and Emerald from being dragged down to hell by Bazixal and Phoenix tries to use her power but the last line says “All I Knew Is it was too late”

Then chapter 29 it’s all of a sudden Bear (like WTH Shannon? Way out of left field - there hasn’t been any chapters from him in the entire book and then there’s this tiny little piece with all kinds of holes) and then at the end of the chapter Ruby comes out of nowhere and saves him from the wolves and then Phoenix is suddenly there to save the day? How? What happened? How did she escape Bazixal? Chapter 30 is 3 months later and I expected at LEAST an explanation of how they so obviously DIDN’T get dragged to hell at the end of Chapter 28….but there was nothing. What. The. Frack? Is there a missing chapter in not aware of? I can only say I am so disappointed in this series. I feel like this isn’t the first time in this series I have felt like things were not explained at all and the end was very sudden or cut off with no real explanation with a happy ending chapter that explains the final scene and how they won. Not only that but there were SO MANY things I. this book left unexplained. Like Mario - he came as she asked then what? He was dusted along with the rest of them? Kinda anticlimactic? Was he good? Bad? What about the whole “I need all the abnormal to fight together on a team to win?” In the end JT was just the kids outside fighting? Really? Little kids? What about her “team”? They were pretty much left out of the climax entirely except for maybe Easter. Shannon must have wrote this under a lot of pressure to put out in record time for it to have so many holes in it. I feel like I am sitting here wondering what the heck did I just spend my money on? Not the kind of writing I have come to expect from Shannon Mayer.

So I really enjoyed reading this book up until the last few chapters and then it just went sour on me. Nix, Killian, Dinah, Ruby, Emmy all fall into hell at the end of the fight... and in the next chapter it jumps to Bears POV... and of course there is mama bear saving the day. Which I wouldn't have it any other way. But I would at the very least expect to hear even if its just in a flashback memory. How the hell they got out of hell. But nope you don't get that at all. Goes from Bears POV being rescued to a 3 month later epilogue. With no word of what just happened. You are left wondering and guessing. I didn't like that at all.

There were a few other spots in the story that I wasn't happy about either. I didn't like the fact that we were taking this "savior" of the world (even though she didn't consider herself that) and bringing her down to just a common criminal. I get her having to kill people to survive and protect her children. I am whole heartedly in support of that. But to have her resort to robbing a gas station and killing the owner because he tried to protect what belonged to him. Yeah I can't understand that at all. Stealing cars/bikes... go for it. You have to get around somehow.... Killing people just to get their cars/bikes... nope I can't get behind that either. Always before in the story there was a good reason why she killed somebody. It wasn't because she needed money or a car. I can't get behind this character doing that. I was very disappointed with it and right now I am wishing I had skipped reading this last book. This takes away more from the story then it added to it.

Excellent series! I have to warn you, several of the books in this series end on a cliffhanger but not this one. Nix is a former assassin, who was left for dead by the man who she thought loved her after giving birth & ended up in a mental institution but managed to break out. Now she is on a mission to save the world for her children. Gardreel, the head fallen Angel, is after the Phoenix (Nix) but also has other more nefarious plans for the world & “abnormals”. Her children are hidden from her out in that world so she must stop Gardreel’s nasty plans before she can go find them. Nix has a few tricks up her sleeve to outwit the bad guys & once she on a mission, come hell or firewater she’ll get it done. She runs into a few bumps in the road, like can she trust her brother (the one she never knew about), or the man she loves who left her behind for dead. Nix & her ragtag group of abnormals have just 3 days before the big showdown & it’s a race against time….
P.S. There a a couple of great Easter eggs hidden on the books that link her a couple of her other series together, just a little something extra for us longtime readers/fans! Read it in one sitting. It is that good, action packed from beginning to end!

I have loved this series from the very very start and totally binge read it so having to wait for this final book was literally agony but boy was it worth it! Once I picked this up I immediately fell into the story as we pickup up right where the previous book left us. Nix is a simply kick ass, badass and an all round amazing character that you would definitely want fighting in your corner. Her ‘team’ stand by her and support her in a such a way you would think they were family which by the end of this I guess they were! There’s so much action, betrayal and the twists and turns, well I just couldn’t keep up and when two old friends from another series made an appearance well I laughed and even teared up a little. The ending was phenomenal, literally a fight to the death and had me on the edge of my seat biting my fingernails to the quick, screaming at my kindle especially in chapter 29! All in all an amazingly fantabulous series that I would be happy to read over and over with it’s exciting and gripping storyline and a cast of characters that I would love to meet ( just not the bad guys!!)

I was so freaking excited to be back in Nix’s world. She is one of my favorite FMCs from Shannon’s books. She is strong, resilient and incredibly feisty. The way she has gone above and beyond for her family since the very beginning made me love her all the more.

This book starts right up where book 4 ended. Much like the rest of the series this book was an absolutely wild right full of epic battles, deception, perseverance and a healthy dose of love. Shannon does not disappoint in continuing Nix’s story. Bringing everything full circle.

Along the way we also get to see some crossover characters from some of Shannon’s other series (Rylee, Alex, Celia, etc). The Easter eggs she plants in each series make for an awesome reason to read her other books.

True to form Shannon takes you on a ride that you’ll both love and hate at the same time. I was on the edge of my seat, stressed beyond belief for most of this book. Not for the first time I questioned Shannon’s motives and wether there would truly be a happy ending for this book. However, I reminded myself that I must trust the process. While my heart may break this author always gives her characters and ending fitting for them.

The final book in the Nix series picks up right where A Savage Spell left off. Thank goodness too, because … Killian! Nix is finally reunited with him, but he’s in bad shape and it may take a deal with a demon to help him. A deal she’s willing to make and hopes Killian can forgive her, because she’s going to need those she trusts by her side. To stop Gardreel and his psychotic plan (to quote Dean Winchester, “Angels are d**ks.”), she’s going to need a spell to make another sentient weapon that can kill the fallen. A spell known by few and one thought to be dead. Nix has the weight of the world bearing down on her and a short time frame, but she’s got to do it or it will fall onto Bear to stop the fallen. A mother’s love started this journey and it’s going to finish it. This book is fast paced and the Easter eggs will surely bring a smile to your face (trust me there are some good ones). I really enjoyed this series and I’m a little sad it’s reached the end, but that ending was heart pounding and the perfect ending for Nix’s story.

Fast paced and full of action, The Killing Curse is the finale of the Nix Series, and it was quite an amazing ride.

There's this sense of urgency throughout the entire story, making me restless and on my toes. Nix is unapologetically brutal, knowing the world hangs in the balance. She feels the weight of every decision she makes, but she knows she has no time for sentiment, as the consequences of failure are particularly poignant for her.

Never sure who can be trusted, this story is about taking chances, crossing your fingers, and hoping that it's enough. It's about sacrifice, power, and raw determination. It's also about what a mother is willing to do to protect her children.

Though the ending is left in such a way that you know the story is over, it's also done so that you know the world continues on, and Nix will not be peacefully resting through the rest of her life. With appearances made by some of my favorite characters from others series, The Killing Curse is just as amazing as what I've come to love about a Shannon Mayer story.

Wow

Shannon really puts her characters through the wringer, every single time! This story was enthralling. I could not put it down. The return of so many of my favorite characters, the engaging story line,, and the fantastic writing style made this worth every second of lost sleep!! There are some pretty awesome cameos, if you've read Shannon's other most popular series you will recognize them easily. If not, the cameos make perfect sense within this story and world.
Shannon's said that this is the finale for Nix. So much happens that makes Nix question her past actions, at least a little. I don't think she ever regrets the choices she makes to protect those she loves or to survive, but a little looking at the past in a new way... not regret, but surprise and what ifs at least. Nix finally lets a couple people in on what may need to happen next. So if this is the end for her, maybe it's not the end of this world... Either way, ending, spin off, whatever, I enjoyed every word.

Holy smokes. I honestly cannot believe this series is over. It was as cut throat as it has always been and I love it! Nix is viscousness with a purpose! There is no derailing her from her goal and this time, the world is on the line. She has faced so much hardship, heartache, and brutality throughout this series that she even surprises herself that she still cares. Shannon Mayer wrote this killer so relatable that any parent can imagine destroying everything that tries to come between them and their kids.

This last installment completes the overall story arch that began so long ago. It is a HEA but takes a lot of violence to get to that point. This is straight urban fantasy with pretty much no romance written in and only lightly suggested. The entire series is about a strong, independent and relatable mother who is doing everything she can to protect her children. Fully recommend reading this series and being prepared to cry, be mad, cheer, and slump with relief.

Holy Dinah!!

Buckle in y’all!! You are in for a bumpy and yet exhilarating ride.
The fight continues with the fallen, demons, and abnormals. This installment knocked it out of the park! It was such a addicting read. Fast pace, and definitely a page turner.

I love the team that Nix has beside her. At this point I only trust a few characters, but we know Nix is pretty spot on with her instincts. I absolutely loved the banter between Diego and Dinah. They always crack me up and it worked well with the storyline.
I absolutely loved the easter eggs and seeing two of my favorite characters. It literally made my day.

The Nix series has been a incredible journey. Nix is such a renegade and I love how she fights for those who cannot. She is a gem.
If you’re a fan of urban fantasy, and vigilante justice with some mama bear vibes then definitely check this series out. It’s a addicting series!

I really wanted to like the 'finish' to this series. Sadly, I only finished it because I kept hoping it would get better. It didn't. I ended up totally disliking the lead "heroine" Nix (using that lightly) after she killed a man that was basically just defending his own business against a thief (Nix) by raising a shotgun. Then she said "he started it". Really? And WTF was with the next to last chapter's ending?? Quoting "But as the flames rose around us, I knew only one thing. We were too late." Too late for what??? What the he** happened then? It jumps right into Bear's POV ending then the epilogue. Why put something like that 'we were too late' but not have ANYTHING that followed up on it?? Maybe I missed it in the half dozen times I re-read that part last night trying to make it make sense.
The only redeeming part was seeing Rylee and Alex (which was, I'm sure, hoping to get readers into the other series ~ which I've enjoyed). All in all, I think even the three star rating was being generous just because I normally like Mayer's books.

Omg! I don’t believe it’s here finally!! What amazing surprises are inside those covers…

I honestly think waiting for each new book by the author is harder than giving birth. I always go back and start the Series from Book 1 or any prequel to savor the newest book to the fullest! I love all the kick butt, strong willed female main characters that the author comes up with! I love how their minds work and how they teach that you don’t have to be perfect and it’s perfectly fine! I love how all their other halves especially Killian give them room to be themselves and only step in at the last minute for a helping hand. Reading about Nix & Killian makes a gal jealous and want one of my own! So please tell us gals where you have all these gorgeous rogue Irishman hidden…. lol! I was caught off guard to see a crossover of Series that was the best surprise of all! I’m hoping for more crossovers to come! Enjoy!

A compelling conclusion to a series.

First, let me just say, Thank you from the very deepest recesses of my heart for this incredible series. Shannon Mayer has a way of spinning stories that make you wish at your core they were real. I hated that I knew this was to be the last in the series. No one likes to say goodbye to their favorites and I can see where she left a few windows open to have a comeback later or spinoffs.
Nix definitely did not disappoint in the slightest and there were more than a few spots where you will catch your breath. The action is plentiful and Diana and Diego are in full form, Killian still makes your pulse speed up and the bad guys had better be on their toes. No spoilers, not even close but you should definitely add this one to your collection since I predict it will be read often.

Nix was captured a year ago, thankfully Killian was able to hide their family before he was lured into a trap and left for dead. Nix is also in a trust but definitely verity situation with her brother Mario, he makes Nix’ neck tingle, his house is crawling with the enemy, and he’s nonchalant about Killian’s dire status. For now, Mario’s sheltering Killian, Nix and her improvised crew.

Gathering more power for her crew to defeat Gardreel, Nix gains new friends, rehabilitates enemies and suffers loss as hard truths bombs are dropped but Nix gets a boon with a detour to fellow bad-ass hero, Rylee Adamson and Alex. Gardreel’s ultimate plan is revealed as Nix likens herself to a general leading her troops through several traps to the ultimate battle for good and evil providing exciting action scenes as this thrilling series wraps.

Phoenix is risen, time to save the world.....

When she finds Fallion, Nix didn't complain, excpet to be worried he'd left her there, at the labs. With him deathly I'll, time running out, and enemies all around her Nix will need to continue to level up, so she can do the job everyone needs. It always takes a monster to save the world. The characters have developed into a good mix, almost like destiny, but pheonix knows to never let her guard down. The fight scenes with the new ways to kill the fallen are fast, down and dirty, and between the world, in no mans land, the descriptions are very detailed. The rest of the scenes are more sterile, but with the laughter, complaining, and pain coming from most of these broken toys it could be as though they're foggy, so the detail isn't as fine. I hate wrap ups, for series, but this one was well earned.

I don't think there could be a better finale for Nix. Shannon Mayer pulled out all the stops. Not only is this an amazing action packed story, it is also riddled with Easter eggs and outright cameos from characters from some of her other best selling series. Phoenix is a badass like no other. As a mother it is easy to understand the violence she is willing to commit to save not only those she loves, but the entire world. She happens to have some incredibly amazing skills and determination to do just that. Her fierceness also inspires others to join her on this deadly mission. So buckle up and get ready for a wild ride into a world filled with warring angels, demons and those in between them.

I have read every book in this series and I have to say that each one is fantastic! I am sad to see this series come to an end.
This book is full of action, twists and turns and the story just pulls you right in. The charters are well developed and the world building is exceptional.
I love how strong "Nix" is but she is also vulnerable and loves her family so much that she willingly steps in front of or diverts danger towards herself to save them. Nix and Killian make such a great team. I am hoping that the author will come up with a series about their children.
If you love a book that is well written and has both a well developed story line and characters is full of action and pulls you in this one is a must.
You will not be able to put it down.

MEN!

I’m honestly sad to see this series end, Nix has always been a favorite of mine. A mother that doesn’t WANT to rule the world, but will damn well do it if it means saving her children. Of course it doesn’t get by me that every single character that is wishy washy, tucks tail, or plays both sides in fact owns a peen. Men can’t be trusted, obviously! Easter and Emerald both kick ass as backup for Nix in what ends up being the ultimate showdown with Bazaxil and Gardreel. Galia is exactly who and what I hoped for so I am so very happy about that!
The only question I have is how Nix ends up getting to Bear, although I am very glad she did in the end.
This entire series was very much worth the read!

A Killing Curse

It’s taken me longer than usual to write a review for this because I am mourning the end of the series.
Ms Mayer not only gives a complex thrill ride in every book, she makes one care deeply for her characters. She has written a very tightly drawn story to a closing one can only hope will be revisited at another time. This is the culmination of a series, so they should be read in order for the best experience. If that is not for you, at least read the previous novel, A Savage Spell, to get you somewhat up to speed with the endgame. Ms Mayer never disappoints. I have no idea how she does it, but she does and I for one, will read everything she writes.

I have enjoyed every book I’ve read by this author, but I admit that this series is probably my all-time favorite. Nix is back, and this book picks up right where the last one ended (boy, that last book was a shocker). This series-ender was a thrill from that point until this end of the book. We get a glimpse of some characters from other series-favorites which I just loved, and we tie up all the plot points. Add to that the great writing, Nix being a bad-a$$, and some tough love, this was a thrill-ride I couldn’t put down. I would love to see more Nix, and my heart breaks that this is the last one. Maybe, please, more? Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

I can’t believe the perfection that this book is. It’s so seldom female characters are written with the same propensity for violence as their male counterparts. Nix blows this out of the water. She has no remorse doing what she must to keep the world safe, even at the expense of her own heart. Finding such an unapologetically fierce character, who happens to be female, is so rare and incredibly intriguing to read. I absolutely loved the crap out of this book and this series. I’m so happy how with how ended but so sad it’s over. Thank you so much for Nix, Shannon Mayer. If you’re truly a Shannon Mayer fan you’re really going to enjoy all the little nuances in this book too.

What a ride!

I'm so incredibly sad that this journey is over. I have loved the Phoenix series since it began. This book did not disappoint and it was an edge of your seat ride from page one. Phoenix is such a strong woman and she will do anything to protect the people she has come to love. She started out not knowing love or even knowing that's what she needed, but she has it now and she will not let it go. I have enjoyed all the new supernatural aspects and action. This book (this entire series) will not disappoint! I just love Shannon Mayer, she can't write something that I won't love.

Phenomenal, heart pounding, conclusion!

This has been my absolute favorite series by Shannon Mayer. I am sad that this is the end but what an amazing ending it was!

Right from the very first page I was on the edge of my seat with utter anticipation of how it was all going to play out. It kept my heart pounding, my palms sweating and I think I bit off every fingernail I had. Nix is the ultimate badass warrior queen and I love how amazing she is.

Brilliantly written with outstanding imagery and phenomenal worldbuilding that transports us readers to another world that we never want to leave.

Bravo!

Ugh it can't be over!! There have to be more Nix in our future! Shannon continues to make this world my absolute favorite. Our favorite bad @$$ heroine is at it again with only 1 goal...well maybe 2. Save the world and get her family back.

The dynamic duo (Nix and Dinah) aren't playing around in this action packed 5th installment. But don't forget her 4 legged sidekick. The clock is ticking and this time the world is at stake. They pick up some new friends along rhe way and find who their true alies are. Let's face it, Nix won't hesitate to cut the dead weight. A great ending to an amazing series. Trust me when I say this is a must read and you'll be begging for more.
