Welcome to Normal, Kentucky~ where nothing is normal. A Campers and Criminal Mystery Series is another brainchild of USA Today Bestselling Author Tonya Kappes. If you love her quirky southern characters and small town charm with a mystery to solve, you're going to love her new cozy mystery series!

Mae West is busy this Christmas season. She's running around Normal getting the town ready for the first Winter Festival, which she hopes will become an annual event for the tourist town.

The freshly fallen snow sure does make the Daniel Boone National Park beautiful and ready for Santa's arrival, but it also makes the curvy roads through the forest very slick. Unfortunately, Mae finds out just how slick the roads are after her car slides off the road and hits a tree, putting Mae into a deep coma.

Mae is one of the lucky patients who does wake up and happy to celebrate Christmas with family and friends.

One of the patients in the emergency room with Mae didn't die that night of natural causes, and Hank Sharp has himself a new homicide case on his hands.

Mae starts having memories about the fire that took her family and a memory of a murder plot that she thinks happened when she was in her coma. Only, she's having a hard time distinguishing between the two memories and the clues seem to have blurred lines. There's one thing she does know for sure, both incidents come with clues that neither were accidents.

Once again, Mae West with the help of the Laundry Club Ladies put on their ameatur sleuth cap to help solve the mystery of the murders before the killer sends her Christmas gift she can't return.

Campers & Criminals book 14. Cozy mystery. Best read as part of the series in order.
It’s almost Christmas in Normal, Ok. The snowy and slick roads cause Mae to slide off the road and she ends up unconscious in the ER. While she’s unconscious she hears someone planning a murder. When she wakes up, she asks questions until she’s the one in danger.

Entertaining with a few surprising twists. Mae is remembering more of her childhood at the same time so while all of these mysteries have a lot of bodies, this one looks more to the past. We learn a bit more with each book about the fire that killed her parents.

🎧 I listened to the audio version narrated by Johanna Parker who has done the full series to-date. She does a fantastic job with the southern drawl and different character voices. I listened to this at 1.5 which is faster than my preferred because it upped the drawl to a more reasonable talking speed.
I prefer the audiobook format for this author since it tends to hide the editing errors of the print versions.

Another hit for the series! I love Mae and the crew and I always look forward to getting back into the series. It never gets old! My only "complaint" for this one is that it didn't feel very Christmasy. Maybe it wasn't even supposed to! But going by the title I thought this one would be centered around Christmas and we don't get much of the that festiveness in this book. Can't wait to start the next one! I already have it downloaded.

Eggnog, Extortion, and Evergreens by Tonya Kappes is the 14th A Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery. It can be read as a standalone for those for those new to the series. It is Christmastime in Normal, Kentucky where Mae came up with the Winter Festival to help draw in tourists to the town. Mae’s car slips on the icy roads and she ends up unconscious in the hospital distressing her family and friends. Mae overhears a conversation while she is comatose that has her investigating a suspicious death. Some old memories also resurface from when her family died in a house fire and Mae wants to explore those as well. Mary Elizabeth was a mother hen in this story being protective of Mae. It led to some humorous situations. The mystery had a couple of suspects, good clues, and a red herring or two. Tex and Glenda make an appearance in this story. Mae needs Tex’s help and they can use someplace warm to live. It sounds like a win-win for both parties. Tonya Kappes provided a humorous and diverting cozy mystery that captured the holiday season in Normal, Kentucky. Tonya Kappes has an engaging writing style that draws the writer right into her tales. The characters are developed, and you can count on plenty of humor as well as southern hospitality. I am looking forward Ropes, Riddles, and Robberies. Eggnog, Extortion, and Evergreens is an charming cozy mystery with a black ice incident, a meddling mother, a bothered boyfriend, holiday happenings, festival fun, a distrustful demise, and some Mae West mayhem.

Eggnog, Extortion & Evergreens by Tonya Kappes is the 14 th book in the Camper and Criminals Mystery series. Whilst in a coma in hospital following a motor vehicle accident, Happy Trails campground owner, Mae West, overhears a murder of a patient in the adjacent cubicle. I enjoyed this quick mystery with its unusual investigation relying upon Mae’s memory recollections through Reiki. There is also a little progression of her memories of the fatal fire of her childhood. It is also nice to catch up with the laundry club ladies as well as the other residents. An enjoyable and interesting cozy mystery.

Eggnog, Extortion, and Evergreens is a uniquely different mystery style than others in the Campers & Criminals series. It includes our favorite characters, a compelling mystery, and the gorgeous Daniel Boone National Forest setting. It is the perfect Christmas escape that can be taken any time of year, especially for we who live in the desert, so we can armchair travel to see snow and feel the crisp, sweet air. This time, a quote from Dottie tickled my funny bone: “Do not let your mind wander too much. It is too small for you to let it out alone”. Except that Mae is too young for her mind to wander very far!

Mae doesn’t feel like it this time, however. Our favorite campground owner is in an accident. She hit some black ice, a passing motorist saw her car off the road and called the ambulance. It was hours before she regained consciousness due to a concussion that the doctor said might take several weeks to recover from. When she is in the emergency room, she not only has a dream about her past, but she also hears a man and woman in the other side of the curtains discussing how to kill the person in the bed. At one point, she was told she sat up in bed and called out “Murderer!” Oopsie. Because afterward, she has absolutely no memory of it. None.

The hours go by and boyfriend, Detective Hank Sharp, tries to avoid telling Mae about the death of the man who had been in the bed next to hers, Randy Lenz. Before Mae left the hospital, the man’s daughter, Denise, had gone to the emergency room requesting an autopsy to be done on her father despite his heart ailment thought to have been the cause of death.

When Mae tries to text the Laundry Club ladies – her friends and sleuthing partners who have helped solve several murders and other crimes – do not respond to her. She learns that her foster mother, Mary Elizabeth, has given everyone her responsible Southern mama threats if they do not allow Mae to rest and recover from her injuries. But how can Mae find out what people seem to think she overheard when she was unconscious? Why does the voice of the nurse, Raye, sound familiar?

As in life out here, the lives of Mae and her friends are not problem free. What makes those problems easier is how this close-knit group of friends weather their storms together and help each other and their community. Normal is a heartwarming little town filled with delightful folks, especially those who are just as much a family to Mae as her foster mother and foster brother. The mystery was almost impossible to figure out from Mae’s perspective, who wasn’t used to living with an impaired memory. I appreciate the lengths she went to in an effort to jog her memory! Whodunit was definitely a surprise to me, much less to Mae. The end is satisfying, and I am looking forward to the next in series! I highly recommend this cozy mystery to those who enjoy Southern cozy mysteries, laughter even in the trying times, the national forest setting, and camping.

From a Thankful Heart: I received an Advance Reader Copy of this novel, and this is my honest review.

A Camper and Criminals Cozy Series is my favorite series by Author Tonya Kappes. I can't wait to escape to the town of Normal, KY, with Mae West and the laundry club ladies. These characters are realistic, quirky, and full of southern charm. Although some of the characters seem over-the-top, if you live in a small southern town, you know there is always that one person who is over the top. The story is full of humor with a touch of romance. The mystery pulls you and keeps you guessing with all the well placed red herrings. The setting of Normal seems like an enjoyable place to vacation, especially during the Christmas themed festival. Unfortunately for Mae, she missed a lot of the festival due to her car accident she has at the beginning of the book. Even though Mae isn't severely physically hurt, her head injury seems to have jarred some deeply buried memories about Mae's family. I eagerly anticipate the next book not only for the mystery, but find out more about Mae's past.

All thoughts and opinions are my own, and in no way have I been influenced by anyone.

Eggnogs, Extortion & Evergreens earns 5/5 Eavesdroppers...Engaging Entertainment!

The things you hear when in a coma! Mae couldn’t see and couldn’t respond, but she could hear. Boyfriend Hank’s concern. Friend Dottie’s encouragement. ER doctor’s diagnosis. Two strangers’ whispers. Did she hear...murder? Nah, couldn’t be; she’s all mixed up with confusing thoughts about what, how, why, and old memories are flooding in about the fire that took her family. But, as she jolts awake yelling “you murderer,” her foggy memories are more like a dream. Mae is released, but with strict instructions to rest, pleased to spend quiet time in her little camper, hovered over by several mother hens, but Hank calls to check on her, but begs off adding his “clucking” around. It’s a suspicious death; the autopsy on the man who’d been next to her in the ER shows death by suspicious circumstances. Oh, what was it she heard?

Tonya Kappes continues the entertainment with the fourteenth book in her A Camper and Criminals Cozy Mystery series. A tense first chapter, eavesdropping in the ER, and another murder grabs readers right off. A well-written series has become one of my favorites, Kappes pens a sensory-laden description painting the Kentucky setting, laid-back small town community, realistic characters, and Christmas holidays with true southern flair. Her fun banter gives insights into personalities and sets a dramatic, sometimes comedic, tone. This dramedy is quite compelling starting with a unique manner of eavesdropping that might not be admissible in court, but still totally intriguing with several suspects, misdirection, and a “Wow!” reveal. One ongoing and compelling mystery is linked to Mae’s childhood and the death of her immediate family; her repressed memories are slowly bubbling. I love Mae, and Tonya has surrounded her with enjoyable and quirky friends and family. She’s left her past behind embracing a nicely-depicted loving relationship with whom she collaborates, not circumvents, authority. To round out her circle, there’re people of varying ages, skills, and involvement making this book and series great reading. Normal, Kentucky, is always a favorite literary destination, and it’s residents, entertaining literary friends!

I still raise concerns about Dottie’s smoking. She could still be the colorful character without a “cigarette dangling from the corner of her mouth.” Just imagine the humorous mood swings while she’s trying to quit!

Bonus! Adding to the delightful experience with this series is the unique “Recipes and RV Hacks Advice from Mae West, Owner of Happy Trails Campground” for your culinary and lifestyle needs. The three recipes are great even if you’re just a “stay at home” camper: Slow Cooker 2 Bean Chili, Perfect Toasted Cheese, and Kentucky Eggnog (Oh, my favorite holiday cheer!) with a Campfire Cobbler courtesy of Maker’s Mark Whisky. The hack offers ideas on conserving your water supply, advice about the Grey Tank, and Camper Tips for Fifi.

Disclosure: I received an ARC from the author. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.

Another winner

Lots of plot twists and surprise info in this one. Mae's concussion doesn't help much with solving the murder, but bit by bit she puts the puzzle pieces together and a murderer is caught. Love her and those crazy Laundry Club ladies.

Welcome back to Normal, KY. Where nothing here normal actually seems to happen.

As Mae lays unconscious in the ER. She hears Hank but she can’t understand why he can’t hear her. She doesn’t understand what has happened. She hear a unfamiliar voice comforting him. Mae screams!!

Mae has everyone really concerned this time. But has she really witnessed a murder or has she made it up all in her mind this time. Has Mae crossed her past and current memories. Is she finally starting to come face to face with her past? Is she confused on what has really happened when she was a child. Is Mae confusing the current situation with the past? Mae has so many unanswered questions. After her second visit with bare chested Tex the chiropractor the pieces keep getting bigger not fitting together. With no answers are insight. Mae’s family and friends are worried. What is really going on with her memory. Mae’s adopted mom Mary Elizabeth is concerned so is her foster brother Bobby Ray.

Is there love in the air for Abby Fawn? We know Dottie sees everything but she hasn’t told this new secret. Who is this new secret love?

Are Mae’s friend plotting against her. Do they think she has finally lost her mind. Are they trying to solve this murder Ava asked them to look into with out Mae? Who has scared them off from letting Mae in the loop? But is it the same murder? Mae wants to know.

Grab a blanket snuggle up with a nice hot cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate. Let’s find out what’s been going on in Normal since our last visit. Because Tonya Kappes has been busy!!

Mae thinks she's having a dream, until she wakes up.
Mae is in the hospital ER after possibly hitting a patch of black ice.
While she was in a coma, she overhears two people plotting to kill someone else in the ER next to her.
Of course, even a concussion will not stop Mae and her pals from investigating a murder. Especially one that she may have the clues to floating around in her brain.

This is another fun story from the mind of Tonya Kappes.
There are developed characters, a good bit of humor, and just the right touch of suspense.

Synopsis:

Welcome to Normal, Kentucky~ where nothing is normal. A Campers and Criminal Mystery Series is another brainchild of USA Today Bestselling Author Tonya Kappes. If you love her quirky southern characters and small town charm with a mystery to solve, you're going to love her new cozy mystery series!

Review:

The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly through their actions and words. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions added a lot to the story. I could feel Hank’s worry and angst over Mae being in the hospital and I could also feel the excitement over a new relationship that is happening. The mystery is well plotted and moved along at a steady pace, and it was not easily solved.

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Mae has such good friends and they will always help each other, no matter what. We should all be so fortunate to have friends like the Laundry Club Ladies. And her and Hank are getting really well, even though she continues to stick her nose in where it does not belong.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. I wonder what Mae will find herself into next.

Eggnogg, Extortion, & Evergreens ” by Tonya Kappes the 14th instalment in the " Camper and Criminals Mystery" series. I really enjoy this series and look forward to visiting Normal and the Laundry Club ladies especially during the Christmas season! I think Normal would be a great place to spend the holidays.

I really enjoyed this instalment in the Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery series. I love Mae and the small town of Normal Kentucky. I needed an escape yesterday, so picked up Tonya’s book as I knew I could read in few hours and just breathe.

This mystery had a few suspects to choose from and I didn’t figure it out till just before Mae! I did suspect who but once again there were enough red herrings to change my mind. Now some of Maes past has come to the surface again while she was unconscious in the hospital and I’m pretty sure she will look into it in the next book, I’m really looking forward to that. I was happy that Tex and Glenda appeared in the story as they are a good quirky addition.

If your looking for a fun, southern mystery then this is your book!

“The time is right now. Either you kill him, or I will.”

This one starts with a shocking car accident - and Mae is in the hospital, unconscious and with a concussion. And the guy sharing the room with her - suddenly, unexpected, dies.

This was an interesting mystery that, this time, started right off, which was nice. I liked that, even though I didn't read the ones between my last one, I saw a lot of character growth and interesting little bits that changed. Loved the addition of another puppy and the good relationship with family. Cute mystery and story.

After finishing book 13 and reading the first bit of 14, I had to continue!

In this 14th book in this aMAEzing series, Mae West is busy, it's the Christmas Season and while it is quiet on the Happy Trails Campground, she is trying to get the town ready for the first Winter Festival. Something she hopes will run good so it will become an annual event during the quieter season. When Mae is on her way back to Happy Trails Campground she finds out how slippery the curvy roads on the Daniel Boone National Park are. Mae slips with her car, off the road and hits a tree, which puts her into a coma. She hears the people around her, but can't talk to them.

But one of the patients Mae shares a room with isn't as lucky as Mae is, who wakes up quite quickly, her roommate is dead. His daughter demands an autopsy and it's found out that he did not die of natural causes...... But what did Mae hear? She knows she heard things but can't place them. She feels that she was witness to a murder, but during the jogging of the memories of that night, other memories also surface, memories of her family dying during a fire.

I absolutely loved this one. The interaction between the characters is always good, but this was amazing! Mae and Hank, Mae and the Laundry Club Ladies, it was all so perfect! But I mostly loved the story line. It intertwines with her own memories of losing her family and I love how this book ended and I NEED to continue!!! This series is just...... yeah aMAEzing!

Boy was I worried when I read a preview of this book before I actually read the book with how it starts out and all. Mae was in a bad car wreck and heard some very incriminating chatter in the space next to her in the ER, but the problem was, she couldn't remember any of it when she woke up.

Mae is one of those lovable sneaks. Sometimes I just want to shake her for going against what people tell her is best, but I love her to pieces! She's underhanded but only for good things, so even while nursing a concussion (and she may or may not have used it as an excuse to do a few sneaky things while sleuthing), she was determined to figure out who really killed the guy in the ER. I probably figured out the perp around the time Mae did or possibly a bit sooner. The showdown was pretty exciting, and I love what Mae did to get away!

All through the book, Mae was having some memories of her original family and the night of their terrible fire, so by the end of the book, she was ready to face those demons in the next book. But not without having a super sweet and festive Christmas celebration with her honey and all her friends while listening to Betts and her choir at the Winter Festival.

"Eggnog, Extortion, & Evergreens (Camper & Criminals #14)" by Tonya Kappes is mostly Winter Festival themed. It's pre-Christmas because Mae and Hank are pulling out decorations for a couple of Christmas trees Mae wants to put up. This one also showcases the perils of winter driving.

The story starts out a bit differently. Mae is in a concussion coma at the hospital after an incident with her car and some black ice. She keeps overhearing things happening around her. When she wakes up, the patient in the bed next to her is coding and pronounced dead. May doesn't seem to remember what she hears while in the coma, but it seems things may not have ended as natural for the other patient as someone would have everyone think. I honestly was a little surprised by this one's ending.

We start to get a bit more about what happened to Mae's birth family. It seems things may not have been as cut and dry as Mae was told.

This installment in A Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery series, opens up with the Winter Festival in Normal, Kentucky, a community located in the Daniel Boone National Forest. From the very first page, Tonya Kappes grabs my attention and holds it the entire book!

While driving back to her Happy Trails campground, Mae hits black ice, careening her car into a tree. Mae ends up in the hospital with a serious concussion, putting her into a coma. She slowly begins to wake up, struggling to open her eyes, all the while listening to what is going on around her. She vaguely remembers bits and pieces of conversations of loved ones that stopped to visit, although she is having a difficult time distinguishing between actual conversations and her dreams. When she hears two people discussing the patient in the hospital bed next, and ending his life she knows she needs to respond. As she breaks through the fog of the coma, the first words she utters is: “you murderer!”

This is the best installment of the series! I say that every book because it’s true! Tonya Kappes, is an excellent storyteller that brings you into her stories, making you feel as if you have become part of it. I love her characters, they are loveable, funny, and truly endearing. Mae and her gang, the Laundry Club Ladies, stick together when investigating a case, and this time is no different. Well, aside from the fact that the Ladies are trying to protect Mae, after the accident. This book takes you on a rollercoaster ride as bits and pieces of her memories resurface. Not only about the murder, but also memories from her past. The suspects involved kept me on my toes as I tried to narrow down who the killer was. I was surprised when they were revealed. A wonderful, well-crafted cozy that brings laughter to your soul, oh those southern sayings, and a smile to your heart. I love visiting Normal, Kentucky and I’m eagerly awaiting the next visit! I received an advanced copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

What in the Sam Hill? I've enjoyed all of the Camper and Criminals books but I think by far this is my favorite. It starts off completely different than all the other books and immediately grabs you and never lets up. Mae is in the hospital after a car accident and thinks that she is dreaming and can hear everyone around her but can't focus and respond to anyone. As she is fading in and out in the emergency room she hears what she thinks is two people plotting a murder but doesn't recognize the voices nor does she know who is in the next bed to her in emergency. Was it a dream or was it real?? As Mae comes around and finally comes back to the land of the living she realizes that someone did in fact die in the bed next to her in emergency and under "unusual" circumstances. Of course this is all Mae needs to start snooping into what she believes is murder. Of course this presents a problem for two reasons. One she hasn't a car since she wrecked hers in the accident and two an over concerned step mother who is threatening everyone and anyone who aids Mae in her insistence to investigate. Undeterred by these "silly" issues, Mae commits grand theft auto and goes off on her own without the help of the Laundry Club ladies .

Once again I was fooled by who I thought did it. The story is wonderfully written and also leaves clues to the next installment that is sure to be explosive.

Thanks to Tonya Kappes for the ARC copy of this book. A definite Read.

These books in this series just keep getting better. It was fun to have Mae not quite sure she was thinking straight after suffering a concussion. It was fun to see what the town of Normal, Kentucky looked like all dressed up for Christmas. All the wonderful characters were here and helping Mae stay safe. I am not a big camper anymore but it might be fun to rent a bungalow and see the Daniel Boone National Forest. I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

I really enjoyed this book, it starts out totally different. Mae is in a coma and may be a witness to a homicide that she doesn't remember. When the memories start returning she decides to find the answers to if they are memories or a dream.
I love these characters and love revisiting them. The mystery was good and kept me guessing. I will continue on with this series.
There's the added bonus of some camping tips in the back.

Mae ends up in the hospital following a car accident. As Hank and family members try to engage her to have her open her eyes, no one can hear Mae responding because her responses are internal, including her orders to some unknown woman to get her hands off Hank or be hunted down!

While still unconscious, Mae overhears a conversation about doing away with the person next to her, and Mae suddenly wakes up calling out, "murderer"! When asked, Mae had no recollection of what she had said, or how she ended up in the hospital.

Recovering from a concussion, has left Mae's memory spotty, but after Hank mentions a suspicious death, and results of an autopsy, Mae digs out her notebook to try to jog her memory. Minus a vehicle, and thanks to Mary Elizabeth threatening everyone to make sure Mae gets plenty of rest. Mae is going to have to get sneaky, and a little help from Tex.

A concussion isn't going to keep a good sleuth down! I loved this story! Despite Mary Elizabeth, the Laundry Club gals, and Hank, who all try to keep Mae from being involved, Mae finds creative ways to get around them. Fun read and a wonderful mystery!

I received a complimentary copy and I have voluntarily reviewed this book.
