In the small city of Reye, Sabine LeRoux is one of the first people to receive the mandatory cure for mental illness. A fate she welcomes, in the hope the cure will somehow eradicate the unspoken curse that has plagued her all her life: everyone she cares about leaves, one way or another.
It isn't until after her curing that Sabine begins to wonder if there isn't something else going on.
First, she wakes up to learn that she's been inexplicably unconscious for weeks following the procedure. Second, her best friend Rory has mysteriously gone missing since the curings began, and no one seems to be looking for her. No one seems to care. And third, a precautionary examination at the curing clinic confirms Sabine's worst fears: the cure has not worked for her, and Sabine is warned to keep this a secret at all costs. Or else.
Except Rory is still missing, and Sabine isn't about to just let that go.
This book gave me ‘Shatter Me’ vibes (sans the whole humans with mysterious superpowers concept) and I enjoyed it! Dystopian is not something I typically pick up, but this was a quick, enjoyable read that left me wanting more. 3.5/5⭐️
I found this author on TikTok and was hooked by the quick blurb. I finished this book in a day, it was riveting! If you’re looking for a new book with excitement and a great storyline I HIGHLY recommend this one!
i did not enjoy this at all. like bro… my hopes were so high for this but it was way too fast paced and felt like 5th grade me wrote it. like miss girl was in love with him after talking to him twice?!?? huh?!!? anyway, thank god it was a short book.
I’ve been in a reading slump and this is just what I needed! This book is fast paced and straight to the point!!
I find myself skipping through a lot of pages in most books to get to the romance or skip through “filler” and I didn’t have that issue here. Maggie Ray kept me engaged the whole time! I would of loved to see a little bit more of Sabine and Alexai but I’m always in it for the romance!
Pick up this book!

This is a very fast pace and short read. I enjoyed the overall story but felt like it could of been flushed out more and explain more. I know its going to be more in the series and I am looking forward to the others. Hopefully the fill in some plot holes. 3.5 stars for this first installment🖤
This book is a chilling look at what our world would be like if everyone was the same. Although it's short, it packs a serious punch and leaves you wanting more.
I loved the way that the characters were portrayed as well as how mental health was addressed. I can't wait for the rest of the books to come out because I need to know what happens to everyone!
Finished this book in one sitting! Loved it so much and would definitely recommend. Not a hard read or anything but definitely kept me hooked! Remind me when season 2 comes out! So glad I found this tik tok gem!
I read this book in a single day which a testament to its quality and ease of reading. I've been in a bit of a slump and this was just what I needed.
Its a good easy read and I would reccomend it to anyone who likes YA novels or Dystopia fiction
It is predictable and relies on a lot on genre tropes but I don't think that's a negative thing. Its a good book to pick up if you are in the mood for a generic YA dystopia as it satisfies that perfectly
The characters are interesting and the world building has potential to be brilliant but I wish it was developed more in book 1.
I do feel that at the end of the book I am actually less clear about the nebulous "mental lllnesses" everyone is so afraid of and why a cure is mandated for them.
Had potential but the description is misleading. This book isn’t about mental illness and dealing with mental illness. It is an easy read YA dystopian novel but doesn’t bring anything new. The characters and the romance(?) was rather underdeveloped and so I wasn’t very invested in the story or the characters.
I think the issue is the word count. If it was longer and more fleshed out, I think it could have been a more interesting story.
The premise intrigued me, and I'm sorry the novel didn't follow through. I doubt I'll look for the next in the series as I just am not invested. A plot is plopped in front of us but we don't know why, how, or even who is really administering a "cure." Obviously, it's not about mental illness, but who exactly is calling the shots, and why? Probably, the whole story might explain, but I don't care enough to find out at this point. The rest of the books might complete a whole picture, so maybe they should have all been compiled into one, but it feels more like the plot hasn't been discovered by the author yet and even she doesn't know. Teenaged angst abounds, right down to swapping love interests and cafeteria confrontation. Sorry, not a good read.
TW: depression, mental illness, some mention of suicide
Thank you to the author for gifting me an copy of this book to read and review. I found this author on TikTok @maggierays and when I heard about this book I knew I wanted to read it. With the exception of The Hunger Games and Handmaid's Tale, I'm not typically a big dystopian reader. The fact that this dystopian society was centered around mental illness made the whole idea new and very interesting. I devoured this book! The character are intriguing, the pace was perfect for the length of book, and this idea of everyine being cured of mental illness is really something that will make you think. Our main character Sabine, while soft spoken, is one of the strongest characters I've read. She been through so much, lost so much, and still has the strength to keep going and to never stop asking questions no matter how dangerous it may be. This was a solid 4 star read for and I will not only be purchasing a pphysical copyto have on my shelf, but I will also be counting down the days until Season 2!!!
This book was SO FUN!! AHHHH IT WAS SO GOOD!! What?? What?? It’s 211 pages long and the pacing for this book is absolutely perfect. I have never gotten attached to characters that quickly!!
TW: depression, mental illness, some mention of suicide
This book is set in a futuristic world where the cure for mental illness is found & forced upon all it’s citizens! It such a fun story to read, and I need the second one immediatelyyyyy— I love the writing style! I do recommend!
4.5/5 stars. I loved this book! It was a quick read and very enjoyable. You can easily relate this book to what is happening in the world now (although I don’t think the Covid vaccine and “the cure” is the same..) but overall it was great! Some parts felt rushed but that is likely just the result of it being a short book. Looooved the forbidden romance. Cant wait for the next book!
I like giving indie authors a shot, but Citizen just wasn’t for me. It was pitched as adult dystopian but it felt like it was written for middle grade readers. Some issues with pacing, so much happened in a short amount of time but I found the story to be lacking in some emotion. This is a story I’d actually love to see the author revise at some point to flesh out some areas of it.
I loved The Citizen!!! It was a great read and the plot was amazing. I love how it was constructed and all the plot twists Leo me intrigued the whole way! I could barely put it down!!! 10/10 would recommend and I can't wait for the next book!!!
This book was pretty good. Even though it was short it took me awhile to read it, because of work and such, but I thought the concept of the book was very interesting, even though some parts didn’t get as explained as much as I wanted them to it was still a good book. 4/5 stars!
I really liked this book and the author's writing style. The idea of this book is also amazing so loved the execution of that. I know this is only book one, but my critique would be that it felt a little bit rushed and it ended just way too early, even for the first book.
Woah this book was so good, I did not expect to finish it in a day. This was a great dystopian novel, and I can’t wait for the rest of the books in the series.
I finished this book in one sitting because I just couldn’t stop reading. The story is amazingly written and even if it’s short, you feel a million ups and downs. Can’t wait to read the next book.
