Ruby's Redemption is a pretty big book. And I have been pretty busy, but I read this book in under a day! And without really knowing what the story was about, I was a bit 😳 at the start. hahahaha I mean, it's a book that starts off in a brothel. Ahem.
Let me tell you something about this story. It is FULL of grace. Oh my goodness, if you need hope or a reminder that we all deserve it, look no further. Not only that, the flip side of the coin is that we need to remember that NO ONE is too far gone. God will redeem anyone if they turn to him. THAT is what I found throughout Ruby's Redemption.
You know when characters show up on the page and you know they're the main character? While I recognized this with Ruby (I mean the title is the obvious giveaway there), but I didn't with Henry. Initially I thought he would lead us to the other MC. Nope, he was the fella who was going to take center stage.
Their initial encounter sets up the entire storyline. And let me just say, the beginning is a rough one. I mean, living in a brothel under force won't be a story that's all butterflies and sunshine, right? It's pretty gritty and a harsh reality for those living it. The author brings us a bit into the depravity of it all. Nothing gratuitous, but she has to set the stage.
I thoroughly enjoyed the wholesome character of Henry. He has the best of intentions, but also a bit naive. Now, that being said, he fully trusts in God for help and provision. Unfortunately, you can tell Ruby has no experience with anything relating to God. That and the fact that much of her life has been spent being used and discarded by men makes it near impossible for her to trust Henry.
We also meet Abigail, Henry's aunt, who welcomes Ruby with kindness and gentleness, but remember, she's Henry's aunt so maybe a bit protective. I actually really liked her because we see so much humanness in her. It's entirely possible I could relate to her because I can be a bit on the emotional side. hahahaha
And then one of my favorite characters of the entire story, and one whom Ruby likes just as much as me, is Browne. He's the steadfast man of the story. Browne safe and comforting. He's another one of those characters that you want to come alive and just always be in your corner.
Edwina wrote the character Millforte in a way that will have all of us shirking back. He's villainous to the core and written in such a way that we know we'd never want to meet him in a lighted alley let alone a darkened one. What an evil character! He really shows himself and how deplorable he is in the story.
My favorite part of the entire story was the faith. The way God was discussed, their prayers, the way in which the characters viewed Him were wonderful! If more books could be filled with this level of faith, Christian fiction would make an even bigger impact in the lives of people who read this category. At least that's my take. I think Edwina did an exceptional job of incorporating it the storyline and I think it will impact every reader.
Now, who else is ready for book two aside from me? lol
*I received this book for review. This is my personal opinion.
I have finally finished!! 🥳It took me a long time to read. Not because it wasn’t good, but because of me getting behind in my book reading and trying to catch up. Many issues kept me from it, but this book was a lovely read. When I did get to read it, I really enjoyed it. It has a great story to it. Loved all the characters, except Milforte, (You will know what I mean about this one *shudder ) of course and Mr Webster, too. Henry and Ruby were adorable! Henry and Ruby met in a brothel and you will find out why, but it has to do with Milforte *shudder again He is a horrible man! and Henry, a long with his friend and worker, rescues Ruby and takes her to the parsonage where Henry is the clergyman (preacher and pastor of the church at that time). He lives there along with his aunt Abigale. Ruby stays with them to heal from all she has went through because of Milforte 😣 And that’s the beginning of it all. I’ll let you read the rest for yourself, because I don’t want to ruin anything for you! It’s Historical Christian Fiction and Romance by Edwina Kiernan. I believe she’s a fairly new author and this is one of her first. Her next book in this series Gems of Grace is Pearl’s Promise and the third, Beryl’s Blessing. Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy of Ruby’s Redemption to read and review with my honest thoughts and opinions. Must Read!
Ruby's Redemption is a beautiful picture of the power of forgiveness, God's radical, unmerited grace and the healing possible through His love. I enjoyed getting to know Ruby, Henry and the entire cast of characters. Henry was such a patient, loving man and a wonderful representation of our Redeemer. My heart broke for the life Ruby found herself in -- what despair she felt day in and day out, the way she struggled with worth and identity. The author did a wonderful job of transporting me to the time and place and creating characters I wanted to root for. Beautiful story!
Oh my goodness! This story was intense but in a good way. When I first started reading, I was like whoa what’s happening here? That’s because I didn’t read the book description haha. So once I figured out the story was about a Prostitute and a Clergyman then I was good to go. I will point out that the author does tell what goes on at the brothel but it’s done in a not detailed way and is more alluded to than anything but it’s traumatic to the character, Ruby. I loved her character so much but I felt so bad for her circumstances. I was so glad when Henry rescued her and I loved watching her on her journey to come to the Lord. Henry is such a great man. He is willing to do anything to protect Ruby. I also liked Henry’s aunt. I was hooked from beginning to end. Loved this story! Great Christian Content! I recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Content: physical abuse(some detail) and sexual abuse(not detailed, alluded to), some intense moments
This was such a powerful, uplifting and poignant story of God’s grace, healing and redemption that I had difficulty putting it down! The hero, clergyman Henry Stratton, had a heart of gold and lived out his faith through his acts of compassion and kindness, especially toward the heroine Ruby, who had been forced into prostitution by an evil uncle. Set during the Regency time period when one’s social standing and reputation could be in jeopardy from the slightest cause or rumor, this novel’s portrayal of the healing power of God’s grace was emotional and inspiring. The sweet and tender romance develops slowly and unfolds naturally throughout the story.
I think this would be a great novel for book clubs to explore, not only because of the deeply inspiring spiritual messages, but also for a discussion of the various main and secondary characters and issues that arise between them. In fact, in the back of the book there is a download link for reader discussion questions. This book reeled me in from the very first page with its captivating drama and dialogue and left me with a contented sigh when I finished it. Ruby’s Redemption is a touching and compelling story of second chances, grace and forgiveness. Edwina Kiernan is a new-to-me author whose books I greatly anticipate reading. If you are looking for inspiring and uplifting Christian historical romance, add this author to your must-read list!
I received a free copy of this book from the author and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed here are completely my own.
This story has enjoyably believable key people: Ruby, Henry, Mr. Brown, Aunt Abigail and Bessie. A believable, manipulating woman trying to catch Henry as her husband, and two believable, repulsive men out for their own financial welfare create difficult moments, some horribly brutal, for Ruby and Henry. The relationship between Ruby and Henry blooms gently throughout the story.
What an amazing book. I read it in one sitting, not because it was short but because it was so captivating to me. It reminded me of Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. Ms. Kiernan wrote characters that truly tug at your heart and you go through this emotional journey with them. We immediately meet Ruby who is just a broken woman. She is immersed in a lifestyle that was not her choice. She is forced to do this day in and day out with fatal consequences if she refuses. Until by divine chance Henry, who is a pastor, happens to come into her room and just completely changes her outlook in life. He brings with him hope and a love that is pure. God's love.
I was enraged with Millforte as I think anyone who reads this book will be. He is the epitome of evil. The way he treats those girls in the brothel and especially Ruby. He is an "uncle", and I use that term loosely since he is not related to her at all, but the things he has done to her are despicable. I rejoiced when Henry stood up to him and was not afraid to protect Ruby despite the consequences that occurred in him doing so.
All the characters were very well written and I loved them all especially Browne. He seemed to be the voice of peaceful reason amongst all of them. Not that all of them needed it but for example when Henry's aunt Abigail got a little miffed at Ruby he was there to make sure she didn't say anything she would regret. There was a love story between Henry and Ruby and it was lovely but to me the most of important part was Ruby's Redemption. When she realized that God truly loved her for who she was and that she was forgiven for everything that she had ever done, I must admit I teared up and rejoiced. I know its a fictional character but it's amazing how a character makes you think of how people in our world need to hear and see the goodness of God through us. We are His vessel and like Henry we need to see the person or the soul of the person as God sees it.
I really enjoyed this story and I am looking forward to reading any others that Ms.Kiernan writes. I recommend you pick this one up. Definitely an author to look out for in the future.
Reviewer's Note: This book does mention prostitution and the abuse that goes with it. I just want you to be aware especially it this is a subject that is sensitive or a trigger for you.
I received this book from the author. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
I had the privilege of reading ‘Ruby’s Redemption’ by the talented author Edwina Kiernan. This book had me captivated from the very first sentence all the way to the last. Let me start off by saying how much I LOVE the authors writing. The dialogue, the details, the setting...perfection! I can not believe this is the authors first book! I truly could find no fault in any of it. I love how all throughout the entire book the gospel is talked about without it being watered down. It truly shows how anyone can receive the free gift of God’s forgiveness though Jesus Christ, no matter what their past looks like. My heart went out to Ruby and I wished I could befriend her as well as comfort her. I am so very happy she finds freedom in Jesus. Henry was such a noble, amazing man of God with an abundance of compassion and kindness. He is a character I won’t forget. His friendship/relationship with Ruby was truly touching. This book had very intense elements to it and I truly could not put it down. Whenever I was about to take a “break” from reading, each section/chapter ended on such a riveting note, ensuring I keep reading. 😆 Ladies and Gentlemen, I can’t give this book enough praise! Go get yourself a copy as soon as possible!
This book was somewhat heavy with subject material and the faith-filled messages of forgiveness. I liked reading about Ruby's transformation, and much of it went along with my own beliefs in the atonement of Jesus Christ. The story was good enough that I had trouble putting it down. It wasn't super easy to predict how the story would play out.
As far as content, it is a story about a prostitute, but it's tastefully done and there's nothing in it that made me uncomfortable as a reader of sweet, clean books. There is a little language with the characters associated with the brothel, but that's a small percentage of the book.
I'd recommend it if you're looking for a faith-based Regency romance.
Where do I start? I absolutely read this transformational story in one setting because of the many changes that Ruby and the other characters experienced. I can hardly wait to read more!
Ruby ever expected find anyone to love her never knew of God‘s grace all she knew was of an uncle who abused and kept her in captivity Henry finding himself in a brothel near Ruby together I found love and redemption
An original plot with a beautifully redemptive spiritual thread, Ruby’s Redemption is a poignant story of God’s grace as lived out through a clergyman, Henry Stratton, his Aunt Abigail (although wavering at times) and an unexpected acquaintance named Ruby. The journey Ruby is set upon is a daring one that is met with opposition, shame and fear yet sprinkled with glimpses of hope.
The epigraph for this book truly depicts the underlying theme of this story…”Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. — 1 Peter 4:8”
With insights to grace…
“…the Bible shows us time and again that one’s past need not define one’s future. God’s grace is powerful to cleanse and heal.”
“Grace. There was something about the word that captivated Ruby each time she heard it.”
With distinct narration, Sophie Linfield’s voice captures this beautiful story and keeps the reader engaged throughout each scene. I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook and look forward to listening to this narrator again.
This book is suitable for teens and older with no inappropriate intimate scenes and no bad language. I received this audiobook from an author giveaway, free of charge, with no expectation of a positive review.
I felt the disgust, the fear, the hope, and every other emotion felt by each of the characters in the story! I even felt the hatred, then the need to ask to be like Jesus!!
Ruby’s Redemption is a tender, sweet, and thrilling story set in early 19th century England about a woman who escapes a life of degradation in a brothel. With the help of a kind-hearted clergyman and his family, she learns the true meaning of grace and forgiveness. And there’s a beautiful love story in there, too.
Although I enjoy Regency romance, I don’t read it very often since my focus is more on contemporary fiction.
But this was a wonderful story that really warmed my heart. Edwina packed this tale with many twists and turns. I’m normally pretty good at guessing what’s going to happen next, but a lot of the events took me by surprise. Great job!
Such a good portrayal of redemption. Ruby felt she was too far gone for God to truly care for her. The man of God , though, saw beyond to what God knew and came to love her. Ruby’s Redemption is a very clean, well written book that I would recommend to anyone who is mature enough to understand prostitution and how cruel it could be. It truly is how redemption should be.
What a profound story of God’s amazing grace, love, and redemption! You will be drawn into this story from the very first sentence. I highly recommend this book!
This was a fantastic work of Historical Christian fiction! The story and characters were believable and heartwarming as well as at times, some events were heartbreaking. Recommended for older teens and above.

MY TAKE Having a Christian historical romance open in a brothel is an interesting approach, but Kiernan handles it discretely while still conveying Ruby's horrible existence. She and the other prostitutes are actually nothing more than sex slaves. When clergyman Henry, who ends up there in error, understands her situation, he makes plans to rescue her. But Ruby's guardian doesn't give up easily.
This is an overtly Christian story with the main character finding Christ through her association with Henry and his aunt. After some terrible situations, there's a lovely resolution.
Ruby’s Redemption is a Christian historical romance. Ruby is a prostitute, and Henry is a pastor. He tries to rescue her.
The Christian message in this novel is SO well done. Kiernan doesn’t dance around the issue or treat it lightly. It’s not a Christian novel simply because the characters are Christian. It’s a Christian novel because Ruby and the reader get a solid explanation of the gospel message. Ruby’s prayers, tentative at first, then desperate and heartfelt, are fully open to the reader. The other characters’ struggles with their faith and trust in God are transparent.
Another thing Kiernan does well is immerse the reader in the culture of the time (Victorian/Edwardian era). The transportation, living style, jobs (as in servants), manners, and language feel authentic. But the language is still very readable for the modern audience. Kiernan simply weaves in antiquated terms and phrases that remind readers of the setting.
I thought Kiernan handled the prostitution part of the story with skill. The reader is clear on what happens, but it’s not graphic. I don’t think sensitive readers will have any trouble.
What’s more graphic is Millforte’s actions. He owns the brothel where Ruby works. What a cruel man! He’s the kind of character that will make readers cheer when he gets his comeuppance (IF he gets his comeuppance… no spoilers here!).
This is the first book by this author I’ve read, but certainly won’t be the last. The premise intrigued me, and despite the subject matter being serious and sensitive, I expected a somewhat light handling. Instead, I was immersed into the dark and frightening world of prostitution, prompting strong reactions from me. The author’s ability to describe a situation without being graphic or offensive is highly commendable. In addition, the characters are complex and well-written. Each is a product of their background and situation, and struggle to reconcile how they feel with what’s happening as well as others’ expectations and perceived expectations. Ruby is emotionally scarred, and doesn’t easily heal, yet that doesn’t make the book morbid or discouraging. Henry is very naïve, but I thought that trait made a nice contrast to what Ruby had come from – probably why she was so drawn to him. Henry’s aunt is a superb addition to the story, caught between them and their growing feelings and her own belief system of right and acceptable. The only negative for me was that on two or three occasions, the author included a scene where one character talked to another one about something the reader already knew which was unnecessary repetition. There is some violence, but it is not gratuitous.
Ruby’s Redemption is an exceptional story about the power of God’s love to transform a young woman’s life. As I started reading this book, I learned that Ruby was a prostitute but not by choice. Her cruel uncle lied to her dying mother that he’d take care of Ruby. Uncle Millforte forces her to work for him in his brothel. When an unlikely meeting occurs between Ruby and a minister, Henry Stratton, she sees the kindness in his eyes. Henry goes to the brothel without realizing it wasn’t where he was supposed to be for a meeting. She is touched that he isn’t like the men who want her services.
Kiernan writes the scenes in the brothel without it being graphic or disturbing but you still feel Ruby’s pain as a prostitute. There is a lot of suspense because Henry learns that Millforte doesn’t want to lose Ruby and the money she makes for him. Henry is determined to get Ruby out of the brothel and away from Millforte’s cruelty. I loved Ruby’s inspiring journey to becoming a Christian with Henry’s guidance. Also, Henry’s Aunt Abigail is another well-written character. I felt her concerns as Henry and Ruby fell in love with each other.
I highly recommend Kiernan’s Ruby’s Redemption. It was a book I could not put down because I was so invested in the characters.
Ruby's Redemption by Edwina Kiernan is book #1 of the Gems of Grace series. What a sweet, gripping story with so many emotions. I loved this book! It follows the surprising redemption of Ruby who was forced into prostitution at an early age by her own uncle. This is a beautiful story of God’s love, forgiveness, grace and redemption. I found myself thinking about this book all day long, eager to be able to read more at night before bed. Books don’t usually affect me like that. I loved the characters, and the writing was superb. It held your attention throughout every page. Henry the hero of the story is a kind, God-fearing man and Millforte the villain was just plain evil. This was such a powerful, uplifting story it was hard to put down and I didn’t want it to end. It was completely captivating from beginning to end. I highly recommend this book.
I received a copy of this book through Amazon Prime and was so glad to be introduced to this amazing author.
I was really looking forward to reading this book. I had previously read others by this author, and I believe they are steadily improving from this one. But I can see in this the same writing flaws, magnified. All in all, it was pretty lame. I was trying to figure out why I thought so, and I realized there really isn't enough conflict. The characters have conversations on the same topics over and over! As always, though, this was very Christian. I must remember to read chapter titles more, as Kiernan's are really worth reading! I will continue to read her books, as I already know they get better, but I doubt I'll feel the need to read this again. I received this book for free. Everything I've written, good and bad, came entirely from my own head while or after reading.
After the death of Ruby's parents, Ruby was taken against her will to live in a brothel. She was treated horribly and made to serve clients without any hope of escape.
One day, an accidental visit from a preacher gave Ruby some cheer. This kind gentleman decided to rescue her from her bleak life.
Unfortunately, the owner of the brothel did not relinquish her leaving. He claimed that he owned her.
Much danger ensued. Ruby and the preacher could not fight against this evil man. They realized that only God would take control of this situation.
I enjoyed this book about God's love, forgiveness and redemption.
This is a beautiful story of how the love of God's people can show the way to God's forgiveness. This is a story of healing, forgiveness and redemption. This story depicts the difficult situations one can be in without any idea of what to do or where to go. It is a story of God's light shining through others to lead the way to Him. The characters are quite human, quite believable not without fault but walking in faith. You will be blessed as you read this book.
"Ruby’s Redemption" by Edwina Kiernan is a historical romance set in a time of social change and personal transformation. The story follows Ruby, a strong-willed protagonist who seeks redemption and a new path in life, often involving a complex romantic plot.
Kiernan's novel is known for its rich historical detail, character-driven narrative, and emotional depth. If you enjoy historical romances that explore themes of personal growth, redemption, and love amidst challenging circumstances, Ruby’s Redemption could be a compelling read.
This is a sweet, sweet story of a girl who was forced into prostitution who was rescued. The man who owned her found out where she had gone and fought tooth and nail o get her back. Ruby found the Lord’s forgiveness, the author so clearly gives the plan of salvation and what we must do in order to be forgiven for our sins, and receive the salvation that Jesus Christ paid the penalty for by His death, burial and resurrection. This is a well written story and a must read for anyone wondering about heaven and hell.
