I'm a self-published author. I like to write emotionally charged psychological thrillers and mysteries about everyday people in seemingly ordinary circumstances until something goes badly wrong in their lives.
Dotty gets a phone call from DS Dave Banks early one morning. It seems that Dave and his partner, Toby, are having issues. Dave is very frustrated with Toby and complaining to Dotty helps relieve some of the stress. Meanwhile, Dotty and Kylie are also busy preparing for Rachel's upcoming wedding. They have been asked to be bridesmaids and are looking forward to getting their dresses.
As Dotty is preparing to call Dave, he calls her. Dave is terribly upset and says Toby is dead. He does not get a chance to say any more, as the police show up and Dave has to talk to them. After not hearing from Dave for a couple of days, Dotty calls Dave's friend, Neil. Neil informs her that Dave has been arrested for Toby's murder. Even his fellow officers seem to think he is guilty, since his prints were found on the murder weapon.
Who killed Toby? Is Dave being framed for the crime? Being a policeman means he has no shortage of enemies. Can Dotty and her friends help Dave and find out what really happened? Will Dotty's investigation interfere with Rachel's wedding preparations?
Diane Ezzard has created another wonderful adventure with Dotty Drinkwater and her friends. The situations are very realistic and there is some humor throughout to keep the story moving.
This series features a youngish woman (Dotty) who works as a self employed mobile hairdresser but finds herself involved in murder investigations, usually helped by her really good friends. She frequently frustrates her Fiance Robin who supports her, but is also concerned for her safety. In this story Dotty's friend Dave who is also a police officer is arrested for the murder of his boyfriend Toby, The police don't seem to be keen to investigate any alternative suspects, so Dotty and her friends decide to investigate themselves. The story is told very well and I love the characters, especially Dotty and her friends, who are typical young women and are portrayed in a believable way. The story is also told against the background of one of Dotty's friends getting ready for her wedding, and another getting a nose job. The only reason that I have knocked off a star is that the author does include a lot of superfluous information, especially about Dotty, this is quite engaging at first, but for me it does detract a little from the story after a while. I love background material, but there is just too much for my taste.
When Dotty is your friend, you know she has your back! When her good friend Dave, a detective in the local town and his boyfriend, Toby plan to get away and iron out some differences, she is happy for them, but skeptical. But in the meantime, she and her friend, Kylie are getting ready for their other friend, Rachel's wedding since they are bridesmaids and have to get their dresses yet. But when she gets a frantic call from Dave saying Toby is dead, she is worried because she heard nothing for days after that call, even when trying to call him. Dottie finds out that Dave is arrested for Toby's murder and Dottie and friends go all out to discover who the real murderer is since they know it can't be Dave. And they know that Dave has enemies within his police department so nothing can be as it seems! With lots of red-herrings and twists and turns, Dottie is bound and determined to solve this case whether she puts herself in danger or not. This is a great series and once you get started in one of the books, you just can't put it down. I can't wait to see what's next! I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
Five stars for Diane Ezzard for "Dotty Defends a Detective ". What stood out for me in this book was the smooth flow of the story that kept me immersed in every page and Diane's style of bringing a totally fresh, exhilarating storyline and Dotty's character with every new detective case! Dotty once again kept me guessing at the identity of the criminal who framed her close friend Dave and the lengths she would go to investigate her haunches to free him. A mystery of close bonds between friends, an indefatigable investigator with a nose for solving crimes in a setting of a small town filled with long time friends, relatives and enemies. James Dawty summed it best when he said Dotty is the brightest, most refreshing young detective with a penchant for defending her friends, endangering her life in the process and the most memorable sleuth series equivalent to the cleanest, most energizing, life saving, crystal clear glass of water that is the Dotty Drinkwater series!
I was lucky to receive an ARC for which I am again happy to post this review voluntarily.
Police detective gets arrested for death of significant other. However, something is not right, and Dotty knows her friend well. What can she do to help?
There is a scene with a wink that I just love. Had me going too.
I figured out the who done it, but only because I think I am familiar with characters from previous books, and something was off.
I did not care for what I thought was the amount of time in jail. Granted this is a British book and not familiar with their systems. I committed one of my own cardinal sins here. I judge by American standards and not follow my rules. Rule: place yourself in that country growing with that way of life, now make the decision. Not as clear cut!!! I put myself in the doghouse for that.
Easy to read cozy mystery. Can be read as a standalone easily. Recommend catching up to see character development.
This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.
Great book, all the false leads. A friend's boyfriend is murdered. Dave who discovered the body of his boyfriend. Dave is a detective, finds his love dead with the murder weapon beside the body. He calls the police to report it, it goes side ways. He is accused of the crime, he as a detective himself should of known not to touch the murder weapon...Right?? Dotty is your true friend, the one who stands up for you- warts and all. As my grandmother would say. As Dotty and her friends try to help prove Dave's innocence. their following clue to prove that their friend didnt do it. Dave give gives Dotty a vital clue during a meetin in jail, while Dave is waiting for a trial. When Dotty discovers the vital piece of evidence .... it goes sideways can Dotty get out with her life??????
While Dotty and Kylie are in the throes of preparing for their bestie Rachel's wedding, DS Banks is busy discovering the dead body of his partner Toby AND being arrested for his murder. It's always the significant other, isn't it? Or is it?
While the girls are steeped in wedding prep, they also know they NEED to clear Dave of this ridiculous charge. Of course, he's being framed! And Dotty will prove it, but will the investigation put a damper on Rachel's nuptials?
Ezzard has written another rousing tale, with many twists to keep you guessing, don't miss this installment!
[I was fortunate to receive an Advanced Reader Copy of the book from the author with no obligation to review. The opinions expressed herein are given freely and are entirely my own.]
I received this book for free and am giving my honest and voluntary review
Dotty is a hairdresser and a friend to Dave, a detective, who is accused of murdering his boyfriend/partner. She decides to help him when his lawyer and work colleagues act as if he’s guilty.
I love the way Dotty does her investigating by talking to everyone around Dave and his dead lover, Toby. Her friends, Kylie, a never-ending dieter, and Rachel, a woman working on her second marriage, are interesting and her husband, Robin, is incredibly supportive.
I love the way Dotty goes into different social situations and is not prejudiced against the different lifestyles or race.
Dave plans to spend a little leave time with his beau Toby. Things have been quite strained between the two for a while. This is a bit of a Hail Mary for the two of them
When the getaway goes sour, then worse, Dave finds himself in serious trouble and in a complicated compromised position. A police officer like Dave should know about evidence and protocols, yet shock and horror seem prime motivators for Dave
Can Dotty and their friends come to the rescue and save the folks most dear to Dave? Is it already too late for all of them?
Intense action, adventure, drama and broken friendships and romance
'Dotty Defends a Detective' was thrilling. Its pulsating plot was filled with the annoyance of a loved one, a death, charging a police friend with murder, Dotty's busybody impulses, unraveling a riddle, obtaining a memory stick, snapping pictures of the potential culprits, involving the police, oh no...was a mistake made, suspense, tension, action, hooray for a comeuppance, the wedding of the year, and a guy named Keith. Dotty, the protagonist, wouldn't be Dotty if she didn't get involved, especially for her detective friend. Overall, I loved the frenzied build-up in this narrative and tried, in vain, to figure out the suspect.
Dotty's friend is having problems with his partner. When his partner ends up dead, Dotty thinks he's been set up and she's trying to find out how she can prove him innocent. She and her friends put their heads together to try to figure out what might have happened. While her friend is sitting in isolation in prison, Dotty's life has a series of mishaps.
This is a fun read, and I think it's the best in the series so far. I recommend it for anyone who enjoys a good farcical cozy mystery.
The author provided me with a copy of this book for my honest review.
I have read this series from the beginning and look forward to each new story to be released. Dotty and her friends are not content to leave a murder investigation to the police when they are sure one of their friends has been framed for murder. There were plenty of red herring to assure the killer’s identity wasn’t easily uncovered. This story was a real page turner. An entertaining and fun read.
I received an advance reader’s copy of this book; but this review is my voluntary and honest opinion.
Dotty is busy but still takes calls from her friend Dave who is having problems with his partner. Then the phone calls stop. When Dotty tries to get in touch with Dave the next day, she finds that he is in jail for the murder of his partner. Dotty and her friends know that Dave could not be a murderer and decide to find out who the real killer is. Each one of Detective Dave's friends that they talk to point them to a new suspect. I really enjoyed reading this story even though I did not figure out who the killer was.
The Dotty Drinkwater Mystery Series always delivers! Diane Ezzard’s Dotty Defends a Detective took me away from any worries about the pandemic, politics, and any other burden. For several hours I sat back and enjoyed Dotty and her friends; one is getting married, one needs a new man in her life, and one is about to be arrested. Dotty and yet another friend start “interfering with the investigation.” For me it was a pleasant, relaxing read. The characters are delightful.
When Dottie’s friend Dave gets locked up for murder have no fear Dottie and friends are on the case! They know the mild manner quiet man would never kill anyone let alone his partner. Dottie can be flakey but she always works out the clues in the end. Dottie doesn’t know who to trust as her investigation turns dangerous. I love the characters in this series! I absolutely loved the ending! I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
This is the 6th in the series. Dotty is taking everyone on as she defends her friend Dave from a murder charge. Dave is a cop and he is gay. That combination doesn't work well for everyone. Dotty has no doubt that Dave was framed and with a little help from Dave she figures out how to help him and how to prove he is innocent. But can she get the right information to the right cops and save Dave?
Dotty’s friend Dave has yet another row with his partner, Toby! So he goes for a walk & when he returns he finds Toby dead & stupidly handles the murder weapon! Arrested, naturally. But, Dotty is sure he didn’t do it & is surprised by his colleagues thinking he did. Several false trails, but, all gets sorted out in the end.
Dotty's detective friend Dave is arrested for murder and Dotty is on the case. She is also getting ready for her friend's wedding, Kylie is getting a nose job and Robin's birthday is here. Dotty is busy but will find time to clear her friend's name. This is an easy read with enough going on to keep you guessing until the end.
Dotty has to solve this one! Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2020 Verified Purchase Dotty is on the case to clear her friend! This story is very well written and the characters are well rounded. There are plenty of twists that kept me guessing. Overall, this is a very good read! I received an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
Well written cozy mystery with quirky characters. I enjoyed the story as an easy read. There is a wide variety of characters here and much detail included about their daily lives as well as the intended mystery to clear up. Overall, recommended. I received a copy from the author and I leave my review voluntarily.
I really enjoy Diane Ezzard's Dotty Drinkwater books. I'm not reading them in order which is what I usually do but with Ms Ezzard's book it's totally fine they don't leave you in the dark. Dotty is just a tad like Stephanie Plum only British. She is a person you would want on your side if you were in trouble. Keep up the good work. Cheers Lynn(CA)
Another action packed story with Dotty and her friends. When Dotty's friend Dave is accused of murder she sets out to prove his innocence. A must read in Dotty as adventures.
I enjoyed the mystery, twist and turns and suspense of Dotty Defends a Detective, it is well written, so congrats Diane Ezzard and looking forward to the next Dotty Drinkwater book in this series
