When Orion joins an established coven of powerful mages he is unsure how he will fit into the group. The four elemental mages have had centuries to build both their powers and their relationships while Orion is little more than a stranger. As a light mage, Orion has the power to heal, but as he comes to know the other members of the coven, he learns that not all wounds are visible, and healing tortured souls and broken hearts isn’t as easy as fixing broken bones. Orion must bring them all together before they tear themselves apart.
Only when the coven is strong will they be able to welcome the dark mage who will complete the circle and give them the power to defeat a mage who has waited centuries to exact revenge on the former members of his coven.
READER ADVISORY: This story is a ménage and more story with emphasis on the more.
I live in England, in a quaint little village that time doesn't seem to have touched. No, wait a minute- that's the retirement biography. Right now I am in England in a medium sized town that no one has ever heard of, so I won't bore you with the details. Keeping me company are numerous sexy men. I just wish that they weren't all inside my head.
Please note, L.M. Brown is no longer active on Goodreads. Although she does occasionally check in to comment on another's blog the visits are few and far between.
So I got to 22% and a lot of time went by and so I decided to give it a final chance just to get to x% and realize I actually don't like this book at all and finished it (kind of) just to confirm my suspicion.
And I don't want to talk about all the things I disliked because that just doesn't seem to have a point but I will point out one, I guess major, issue: polyamory. Which it was not.
I fell into this habit of actually reading books with multiple love interests. Just like any other book, they can be nice, boring, stuffed with nakedness, entertaining or powerful. But what is, in my mind, one of the pillars of such book is the idea that love is not a finite source and there is enough to go around. It's satisfying watching two people fall into each other like puzzles, stumbling blindly around each other's edges until that Click and if the book is good enough, multiple-MC's book just means more such clicks and great moments.
Polyamory is not about "I LOVE him, he's the sun of my life and my breath but we're mages and have a coven and want or need power (not that we really care about it that much) and that means sleeping all over each other so let's do that even though I really only want my love, at least the rest are handsome and give great buggerings".
Just not. If you just stick what amounts to three couples and devote the whole book to get them closer just to point out their pretty much swingers who are swingers because circumstances forced them and might never have gone that way have it not been for magic. NO.
Plot summary: Orion is invited to join a coven of male mages as their light mage (healer). Most of the book he learns about his powers and the magical world and bonds with the other members as they prepare to face a powerful enemy, the banished former master of the coven. These bonds are crucial in the upcoming battle since the coven gains magical power via sex and building intimacy between coven members. All coven members, although there are established pairs inside the group. The former master, besides being cruel and sadistic, is also highly homophobic and it strengthens his desire for vengeance.
While I've found the erotica effective and the plot generally solid, there were several holes that irritated me. I thought that Orion should have tried to gain better understanding of what being part of the coven entailed before committing to join. Besides the sex. In particular, he should have tried to find what was the goal of the coven after defeating the former master. We never learn what it was. We actually finish the book with less information about Orion (family? past?) than the rest of the mages, which is weird since he is the MC and main POV.
Fascinating way to have sex impact magical ability
Orion was a great addition to this coven. I don’t think that anyone else would have been able to break each mage out of his rut, and bring everyone together. I loved that he was able to stand up to Darius’ temper without being judgmental - he was able to censure while still showing all of the love that he was developing.
One thing that I am curious about, is Alfred simply homophobic, or does he not want to have any kind of sexual relationship? If it’s just the former, what would prevent him from forming a coven with a group of female mages that he could dominate? Or is he so fearful of being weak, in any circumstance, that he has devoted his whole being to basically becoming a coven of one?
There’s a lot of good stuff in this book. The relationship building and the fact that they have to work on themselves, even with the instalove that occurs. The reason this isn’t a 5 star rating for me is because it felt unpolished. I honestly felt like I was beta reading. I was able to finish the book and I liked the ending.
I have some pretty significant world-building questions, but otherwise this was a fun read if you suspend your disbelief even more than usual for a fantasy novel.
An amazing story, with 6 magical men, who come together and form not only a coven but a love bond. There are officially 3 couples(water + light) (earth+ fire) (wind + dark) , but all are together with trust at the end. And there is a surprise of how Orion, the light mage, has a past connection to the water mage. And an interesting twist to the 6th member, the dark mage and how they come form and defeat a villain together.
