She's capable of many things—including driving him mad.
At the start of their London Season, Philippa Clavering discovers her friend, Susan, is being pursued by the wrong gentleman and decides to turn Susan's head to a worthier suitor. Not one to shrink from what she views as her duty and gift, Philippa sets plans in motion to bring about the happy ending her friend deserves. What she does not expect is to have Susan's older brother watching—and criticizing—her every move.
After a respectable number of years on the town, Jack Blythefield is at last contemplating the idea of settling down. What he seeks is a compliant wife to provide him an heir or two and make his home comfortable while he spends his evenings at the club, where a man can get some peace. What he does not need is a termagant who sets his life on end with madcap schemes, which invariably involve his unwilling assistance.
However, when the reputation of Jack's family is threatened, Philippa is the one he turns to. And as her most determined suitor grows assured of his conquest, Jack must decide if a comfortable and docile wife is truly what he seeks, or if he should throw down the gauntlet of his heart before Philippa closes court.
Philippa Holds Court is the second in the Clavering Chronicles series, after A Fall from Grace, and it is a clean & wholesome Regency romance, written in the traditional style. ♥
Jennie Goutet is the best-selling author of eighteen historical romances, including the Clavering Chronicles, Memorable Proposals, and The Bridwells’ Grand Tour series. Her books have received first place in historical romance for the New England Reader’s Choice Awards and have hit the number one spot in Regency Romance on Amazon. They have been featured on BookBub and Hoopla, and are translated into six languages. Jennie is an American-born Anglophile who lives with her French husband and their three children in a small town outside of Paris, but her imagination resides in Georgian England, where her proper historical romances are set. Another fantastic historical romance from Jennie Goutet! I loved these characters, and their arcs were incredible and believable. Philippa was fantastic. You could feel her intelligence, headstrong attitude, and pain at her living situation. I loved watching her fall in love with a man who loved her for who she was--she deserved it so much! I also loved her friendship with Susan. It was a great dynamic and added to the story wonderfully. I felt a hint of Mr. Thornton (North and South) from Jack. An upstanding gentleman with a great deal of stress on him who wants to care for his family and accomplish his work but starts off not understanding matters of the heart. He got there though ;) and his character arc was probably my favorite. It was subtle and realistic.
Last but not least, I loved the history. I learned a lot from this novel about politics in the regency and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it!
Cannot wait for the next book--because there BETTER be a next book!
While I thought the book was well written, I just had a hard time connecting to it. It's probably more of a personal preference type thing, but it was pretty heavy on the political side of things, and I get enough of that in real life, and felt it took up a good chunk of the story and I ended up skimming a lot of those sections. Others who enjoy more history in their historical-romance, will probably really enjoy this story. I think it gives a good look into what life would have been like during that time, the conversations people would have been having, so in that respect it is interesting.

Philippa Holds Court is a sweet, funny and well-researched Regency romance that has that engaging quality I’ve come to expect from Jennie Goutet’s books. At the beginning of the story, Jack Blythefield, a rising start in Parliament, has decided that he should marry. He seeks a wife who can help him further his career by hosting political dinner parties and fade into the background without so much as an opinion of her own beyond that of table settings and menus. His top candidate is Miss Sommers, an elegant female who meets those qualifications and he sets off to court her. The only problem: he can’t get his sister Susan’s new friend Philippa out of his head. They have a great first meeting at a ball when he asks her to dance and she, being quite unimpressed with him, smoothly directs him to another. Phillipa reminds me of the title character in Georgette Heyer’s The Grand Sophy. She deftly manages everyone around her including her older sister Maria who is sponsoring her for the London season. That is, until Maria insists she has the power to sanction an unwanted marriage for Philippa to a political ally of her husband. Luckily, Philippa is not unprotected. This is book two of the Clavering Chronicles so we get to see the head of the family, Philippa’s brother Sir Lucius (from book one, A Fall from Grace) and younger brother George and his passel of friends who come to Philippa’s aid when they remember her. I loved Philippa because she is a kind, compassionate and intelligent woman who is interested in more than just snagging a husband. She looks out for the welfare of her friends, too, in trying to save Susan from an unsuitable match and direct her to a better one. The addition of George and his friends, and even Jack’s older and somewhat dissipate brother Christopher, are also very reminiscent of Heyer, which I loved. The research into early nineteenth century Parliament and the repeal of the Corn Laws is impressive and adds authenticity to the story without bringing it down. It’s a light, bright romance that often made me chuckle and definitely made my heart swoon. I am guessing book three will focus on George Clavering but I’m also hoping that his friend Matthew Evans, Susan and Christopher might reappear.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book to review. A positive review was not required and all opinions are my own.
IMO, this story just got better and better. Old-fashioned romance. 4 stars.
Phillipa, beautiful blonde dtr. of a gent, felt concerned her friend Susan was attracted to Merrick, when shy but good, also wealthy Matthew Evans seemed a better match. Philipa knew of Susan's eldest brother Chris (the heir) but recently learned of 2nd brother Jack, an MP for the Whig party. Phillipa+ Jack equaled oil+ water. She lied to Jack that she had Tory sympathies. Phillipa stayed w/ her older sister & BIL (unhappy souls) who acted repress- ive toward her. Phillipa rejected a suitor the previous ton season, but he kept hounding her.
Miss Sommers impressed Jack as a biddable young lady who'd make a great political hostess/ wife. Miss S helped Jack plan a political dinner, with Susan as hostess. The purpose of the dinner: Jack intended to convince undecided MPs to repeal the Corn Laws. Jack encouraged his eccentric birth family to skip this political dinner. Then his dinner went to hell, & Phillipa, her brother Luc & platonic friend Matt, restored order. Miss S & her mother 'took a powder.' What a story!
Phillipa helped Jack see his family 'with fresh eyes.' This couple found they were in sync more than they knew.
Philippa Holds Court is book 2 in the Clavering Chronicles by Jennie Goutet. I adored book 1 and this story was no different. I couldn’t help but be enchanted by Philippa and the way she put everyone in her path at their ease. Such a gracious character, yet strong of heart. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series so far and look very forward to book 3!!
I absolutely loved this sweet regency romance! Not only was it filled with rich historical details, this story also gave me all the feels! I laughed as Jack and Philippa bantered and teased one another and swooned as their feelings began to deepen. I really enjoyed the inclusion of the political climate of the time and Jack's efforts to repeal an outdated law - it added an element to the story not often found in regency stories.
The author is a wonderful storyteller and she had me completely captivated from first page to last. I loved this as much as the first in the series, A Fall from Grace, and will be adding this one to my favorites shelf! 5 stars for this book that was impossible to put down - highly recommend to any fan of regency romance!
I received a complimentary copy from the author but a positive review was not required.
There’s not much I like more than a stone-faced cool-guy who turns into an awkward fool with the girl he likes… except maybe when it’s set in the Regency era. I liked this one much better than the first book in the series. Jack’s embarrassing but endearing family, Philippa’s restrictive home situation, their “will they, won’t they” enemies-to-friends relationship, all of it kept me engaged in the story to the last chapter.
Enjoyed this book immensely! The snapshot into parliament and the dry humor and wit of the characters really sucked me in! The relationship that slowly built between Phillipa and Jack was a lot of fun to watch blossom. It was natural and felt very genuine. I loved both of their characters! His grumpy exterior was such a front for his sense of duty and responsibility to care for and guide his family! I loved this dry humor that presented itself as condescending toned one liners! Phillipa was sweet and intelligent and was a perfect balance of independence and Grace. I binged this book in an evening because I enjoyed it so much!

Over a cute, short book perfect to reading between heavier reads or if you want to read a book in one sitting.

Pardon me while I go hunt down every single one of Jennies books because she is such a talented writer.
Philippa Holds Court is story of a growth, misconceptions and politics.
I ADORED this romance. The character growth is so well done on both sides. Philippa is an independent, witty young woman who is always looking out for the needs of others and because of her independence gets looked over by her family. Jack has been solely focused on his rising career in politics and is only looking for a docile wife to fade into the background — not a love match.
Jack as a love interest is what sold me for this book. He is fairly self centered and confident and comes off a bit rude at first. (Karen compared this to Thornton from N&S and now I know why I felt so drawn to this book haha) He doesn’t start off as this pillar that all gentleman should be emulated after. But that’s what I loved about him. His authenticity and passion is what drives him, and as you read you start to uncover why he is the way he is and why he makes such a good match for Philippa and has a good heart..
I also enjoyed the many politics presented in the book. It reminded me much of the movie Belle, which is one of my all time favorites. It adds complexity to the plot and really is needed because of who Jack is and Philippas desire to aid him in this passionate endeavor.
It’s a slow burn, but so endearing and heartfelt and there were moments I definitely swooned and loved immensely. I hear George is getting his own story and I could not be more excited.
Philippa Holds Court by Jennie Goutet is the second book in the Clavering Chronicles, and is a stand alone Regency novel. Philippa, our heroine, is a vibrant person whose intellect and skills I found endearing. Our hero, Jack, juggles so much in his life that love has yet to come into the picture. I wanted to jump in the story and meet them both.
This was a fascinating Regency story as it involved the attempt at repealing the corn laws in 1819, and gave you a glimpse into the workings of the British Parliament. Jennie Goutet research provided an excellent backdrop for a fantastic story.
Philippa Holds Court has wonderful romance, personable characters, interesting backstory, and is a true joy to read! As a lover of all things Regency I am thrilled to add Philippa Holds Court to my Regency Library. I highly recommend it.
I was given a copy by the author. All opinions expressed are my own.
Philippa is my favorite type of female main character. I love a girl who knows her own mind & uses it for good!
When this book first started out I thought I was getting a Jane Austen inspired Emma-but what I got was so much more!!
I couldn’t help but cheer for Philippa every time she took on the ton-especially the political men! Her social navigation was so fun to watch! I loved her strength. She was such a great contrasting character from her sister, Maria, & the perfect balance to her brothers!
I also love a good male main character that THINKS he knows what he wants in a wife😂 It always leads to great entertainment!!
Another superb book from Jennie Goutet that was a pleasure to read!!
Do you ever get it that you start a book and instantly it’s like you just settle into that world? Or perhaps it settles in to yours 🤔 either way, it’s like you can instantly tell that you’re going to love every minute of reading it and you both want to savour it but can’t help racing through each chapter at the same time. I had that with this book. I could honestly tell I was going to love this story from the very first chapter. If you’ve read and enjoyed book one in the Clavering Chronicles series then you are going to love this one. I so enjoyed the fact that this story allows us to follow on with Selena and Lucius’ own story. I loved “A Fall From Grace” so for me this was an added boon. If you haven’t already read “A Fall From Grace ~ Clavering Chronicles Book 1”, then I definitely recommend that you do so first if possible as it provides a lot of backstory for this one, especially since that is when we’re first introduced to Philippa! I already enjoyed what we got to know of her character from that book, so I was eager and excited for this story to come out 🥰 I love how Jennie Goutet develops her characters - especially the interactions between Selena and Philippa (as well as Lucius I suppose 😂). Their personalities especially shine through as being bright and witty as well as being both strong willed but kind. And of course... the interactions between Philippa and Jack ♥️ for fear of spoilers I’m not going to continue with that thought, you’ll just have to read and enjoy them for yourself 😉 If you enjoy clean and wholesome romance set during the regency era, you really can’t go wrong with this series. I am definitely happy to recommend it. I received an ARC of this book from the author, however this in no way influenced my opinion and I am under no obligation to leave this review.
I always prefer reading books in series. So I read A Fall From Grace first before picking this up. Philippa was introduced in that book and just had her first ball. Philippa Holds Court is the second book in the Clavering Chronicles series. This is two years later from book one and it’s Philippa’s second Season in London. She declined two suitors and her sister, Maria, wants her to marry this time. She also found a friend in Susan Blythefield then and has kept their friendship.
I love strong female characters who like to speak their mind. Philippa likes politics and would like to make a change through the laws. It’s interesting because Jack Blythefield wants a wife who is Philippa’s opposite.
“I will simply look for the handsomest, quietest, most biddable young woman”. - Jack
But sometimes life takes us away from our plans and leads us to something far greater. We might not understand like Jack didn’t know what hit him when he started thinking about Philippa.
This is a slow burn enemies to lovers romance, full of political issues and times at Parliament. A lot of research went with this book. It was interesting enough for me to keep on. It’s a clean regency romance with a lesson to accept and value family. To support and lead them in the right direction.
Thank you to the author for the complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
A historically rich Regency romance, this was a sweet read and I enjoyed Philippa and Jack's story. It was fun to see characters from A Fall from Grace (which is one of my favorite books by Jennie Goutet and I definitely recommend it). Philippa is headstrong and witty. Jack wants a sensible woman for his wife that will help him further his political career. When they meet through Jack's sister Susan, Jack immediately is put off by Philippa who knows right away how to get under his skin. As the two cross each other's paths more and more, they realize there might be more to each other than their first impressions. I found this to be very well-written. Goutet has a wonderful way of writing like you are reading a Georgette Heyer novel. I did want a little bit more of the romance, it felt kind of slow and more focused on the Corn Law bill in parliament. Overall, though, this is a sweet Regency romance and one I recommend. I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
4.5 Stars The more books I read by Jennie, the more I want. Her attention to detail and smooth transitioning from beginning to end is consistently fantastic. When it comes to the second in her Clavering Chronicles series, I can't not adore her version of the best friend's sibling trope. It's the perfect setup for the will-they-won't-they feels. Philippa knows what she wants but forces outside of her control are dictating more of her life than she'd prefer. Fortunately, she's found a delightful friend to help who happens to have a taciturn and politically focused brother she can't help but spar with. Jack and Philippa's interactions are perfectly concocted for a believable romance. The cast carrying over from book one is seamless and ideal. Having read these two back to back prior to the next release was a fun way to dive into this world. I'm glad I can pick up George's book immediately. Go me for being late to the party. :)
I loved Philippa Holds Court! Jennie Goutet has a way with her writing that is difficult for me to compare with anyone else. With well-written characters and engaging dialogue, I feel she is in a class by herself. Every scene flows perfectly. Her writing makes it easy to know what other characters are feeling no matter whose viewpoint is being told. I loved Jack’s point of view - he was really fun. Even the inside look at the workings of Parliament was interesting. It was a thorough depiction without being dry or boring. The romance is sweet and a joy to watch progress. The Clavering Chronicles is a series I highly recommend to any fan of Regency romance!
I received an advance copy and all opinions are my own.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The characters and story were really well written and I just loved the slow burn romance between Jack and Philippa! The anticipation and build up to that first kiss was just perfect and totally worth the wait! The political setting was interesting and one I haven't read much about before. Easy 5 star read!
I was gifted a copy of this book by the author but all views and opinions expressed are my own.
Solid regency. This one had a great mix of plot, characters, and tension based on realistic issues. There was a little weirdness in family dynamics for both of the main characters but don’t we all have something? This one is good.
Wow! This book is so good! It is romantic, heartfelt, heartwarming, and so much more! Whenever I picked up "Philippa Holds Court", I was whisked back in time waltzing to the Regency Era, and could not put this book down!
This is the second book in Ms. Goutet's "Clavering Chronicles" series, and, just as with the first book, I loved this one! Her writing style is so visceral and vivid, and I could envision each and every moment. I can only imagine the amount of research Ms. Goutet must have done, as each aspect felt authentic. She explores many aspects of life during this era, and every moment feels so true to the time.
Philippa is a kind, caring, strong-willed, intelligent, and passionate young woman who truly cares for her friends so deeply. She often puts others before herself, and her friendship with Susan, as well as her care for the Blythefield family, is beautiful. When she decides to help Susan find the perfect suitor, Philippa could never have imagined it will lead her into Jack's (Susan's brother) life in the way that it does.
Jack is a hard-working M.P., who sometimes seems to have a cold-exterior. Deep down however, he is very caring, and loves his family. Never could he have imagined how being around his sister's friend Philippa will change him, and how it will make him think about what he really wants in life.
(Possible Spoilers!) What an amazing enemies-t0-lovers romance this is! Philippa is truly able to see behind the cold-seeming facade that Jack has. Watching their relationship go from respect, to friendship, to something more was incredible. These two truly are perfect for one another!
Moreover, each and every character is very well-thought out, and helps to push the plot forward in one way or another. The relationships between various characters are so clear, and are truly one of my favorite parts of Jennie Goutet's writing. Her character development is AMAZING!
If you enjoy Regency Romance, I highly recommend this book! It had me turning the pages into the early hours of the morning to see what would happen, and many moments were simply swoon-worthy! I also loved seeing characters from the first book in this series, "A Fall from Grace"!
I hope there will be many more books in this incredible series, and am also so hoping we see many characters from this book, in future novels as well!
Thank you so much to the author, Jennie Goutet, for sending me a review copy of this book, I loved it! All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Unfortunately, I did not finish this book... I checked it out from the library, and for some reason, it was a slog to get through what I did. I don't think it's too much of a reflection on the author. In fact, I have every inclination to like this author. However, the pacing was slow and there was a lot of telling but not quite enough showing going on. I think the premise of the book is great, but the execution is not entirely to my liking. I will definitely try again when I'm in a better frame of mind to read this book and finish out the series with the third one, as well. I did get about 3/4 of the way through. I just couldn't finish it this time around. I hate that feeling, but it's what happened and the book had to go back to the library. I've had it checked out for months... Still giving it four stars because I like the characters and plot.
Philippa Clavering is in London for the Season and her sister Maria is determined to get her married. Philippa would also like to be married but to someone of her choice. Philippa is intelligent and quite forthright in her opinions. Philippa befriends Sophie Blythefield and meets her brother, Jack. Jack is an M.P. and is concerned with the repeal of the Corn Laws. He is a skilled orator in Parliament and he wants a wife to host his political dinners, so he wants a quiet wife. Jack’s family is rather dysfunctional and he is often left to pick up the pieces when things go wrong. Philippa and Jack don’t have a good first meeting but the more they get to know each other so their feelings change. However, Philippa is the exact opposite to what Jack believes he wants in a wife. I enjoyed catching up with Selina and Lucius. Hopefully, George (Philippa’s brother ) will have his own story.
Philippa is trying to help her friend and not looking to marry but her friend’s infuriating brother stirs feeling she never thought would come. Jack never thought to fall for a strong willed girl. He always thought his wife would a good listener be a marriage of convince.
I thought Jack and Philippa had some fun times. I would have given this a higher rate except I did not like all the talk/insinuations about men having mistresses. Jennie Goutet presented it well and in the appropriate way but I don’t think all the talked was exactly needed. This is what made me give it a 3 instead of 4 star.
This book was a refreshing change in that in this book, the hero starts off as such an arrogant fool. It seems like in every single book I read the man at least has no desire to marry. In this book, Jack not only has decided he’s ready to marry, he has very particular (and annoying) ideas about what he’s looking for in a wife. It made for a very fun book! Free audiobook on YouTube perfectly narrated.
