A tempting feast for the lovers of horror.
Dark, gruesome and disturbing; Røyken scares the daylight out of the readers.
McGowan's debut is a compendium of explicitly terrifying writing, thrilling plot and gory world-building.
Full of visceral dread, yet thoroughly captivating. The author's gothic style is efficacious.
Scariest novel of the season sucks you into the terror and leaves the heart pounding.

I love reading spooky stories. Recently I picked the debut novel Røyken of the author Marc McGowan. Story is set in the Norwegian town of Røyken. Main character of the story is Adrian Hope who is a general practitioner. His patient Mrs Johansen is a widow. After her husband's death, loneliness and darkness scares Mrs Johansen. From the past seven months, a regional nurse Agnes was taking care of her. She visits Mrs Johansen sometimes. Once, Mrs Johansen called Adrian to visit him immediately as due to darkness she was terrified. When Adrian made to her home, he found the nurse Agnes on floor. Mrs Johansen had a strange look on her face. Her left hand dripped with blood and she had stained red pair of scissor in her right hand. Adrian sensed something is not right here. He tried to take scissors from Mrs Johansen but she attacked him. Adrian called the police and an ambulance. But will police believe that an old lady could overpower a middle aged man? Marc's writing style is impressive. I enjoyed the overall storyline. Pace of the story was slow in the beginning and later it took pace. Cover photo is according to the story content and will attract readers of horror genre. It's a captivating story. Even though it is little lengthy but it is worth reading. Marc has done wonderful work in building an intense world in his debut novel.

Røyken by Marc McGowan is a horror novel. Røyken is situated south of Oslo. Doctor Adrian Hope lives with his fiancee Rachael. They both are the natives of UK but lives in Norway. They are Norwegian speakers but only Adrian Hope can speak it fluently. Adrian is a general practitioner. One of his patient Mrs Johansen is quite old. Since her husband's death, there is void in her life and even a little darkness scares her. One night, when the light went off, she called Dr Hope to visit her.
When he reached her house, he saw there is no light at home. On reaching a lightly lit room, Dr Hope saw Johansen's nurse Agnes lying on the floor and on checking her, he didn't found any pulse. Mrs Johansen was standing at the window. She looked angry and powerful. She attacked Dr Hope with a scissor. An old Mrs Johansen who wasn't even able to look after herself is overpowering the doctor now. How is it possible? Grab a copy of this book and read it yourself to unveil the suspense.

The Norway winter description made chills to run down my spine. Plot of the story is unique and the story will scare you more if you will read it at night. This novel is written so well. I have read very few of horror stories but I must say this is one of the best horror story.
The book is full of horror stuff which is really entertaining and interesting to read. Being a fan of horror stuff, I enjoyed reading this book. The main element of horror story is that they should have content which actually sounds scary when we read it and this book have that quality.
While reading first few pages, there is a description of some horror events which continues till the end. The start of the story is so good where a man lying as a corpse who could feel his forty-something body ache as of he
had been lying here for some time. As the story problem progresses, you will meet some characters like Rachael, Adrian, Mrs. Johansen and so on. I really liked the bond between Adrian and Rachael.
Later you will get to know the story with Mrs. Johansen which is sad and Interesting too. She lost her husband two years ago due to heart attack and her son is the only one she have but this is just the beginning, the lady have much more interesting story to tell.
Read this book and enjoy the thrilling and horror stuff.
