Partners in Lime is the 6th book in the Seaside Café Mysteries written by Bree Baker. I've been a fan of this series since its inception because the author easily sweeps you away with a beautiful setting, sharp characters, and fun plot. In this latest installment, a surf competition comes to Charm, North Carolina, and a surfers washes out permanently. Too bad it looks like Matt, Everly's good friend, appears to be guilty. We know he can't be, right?

Everly and her business continue to grow by leaps and bounds, but there's a new competitor in town. The scene where she visits the shop is quite amusing. It leads to some help investigating the recent murder, and when Everly's caught on the town blog, everything heats up. I enjoyed this mystery; there were good suspects and a nice bit of backstory about a few characters we didn't know all that well. By now, I'm used to the killer intentionally taunting Everly in all the books, so that's just part of their theme. I can dig that!

Everly and Grady's relationship takes a few turns. They have a good thing going but it's hard when they are both involved in the investigation, and Everly is always in danger. The ending was quite a shock. The series continues to shine, all the books are either 4 or 5 star reads. I am excited to read the next one in early 2022.

I always enjoy this series with the likable characters and great setting on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. In this return to Charm, Everly Swan, tea shop owner, is providing snacks for a play rehearsal for The Lost Colony, when her friend Matt is heard arguing with a celebrity surfer Kai who later winds up dead. Matt is in the play and a longbow is a prop for his character and he is proficient in using it. An arrow from the props is later found in Kai's back. All clues point to Matt's guilt but Everly is determined to prove he is innocence. This is another great mystery with suspense, action, and a pool of suspects, including an unhappy wife, a manager, other surfers, sponsor, and more. And this is another time of me wanting to put my hands over my eyes as Everly sticks herself in situations that is her usual nosy, embarrassing methods. Ha! Her boyfriend, Detective Grady Hayes, tries to keep her safe but arrows keep showing up. There is a new tea shop in town but will it impact Everly's business? Time will tell. This story really amps up near the end with a stressful event and leaves a wee bit of unfinished business that makes me wish the next story would hurry up and release.
I received a complimentary ARC from Poisoned Pen Press and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.

A new Seaside Cafe Cozy Mystery is always a breath of fresh air to read! Never-ending excitement and an outstanding mystery are the components that will satisfy your reading thirst in Partners In Lime. The stakes are high as Everly Swan’s paramedic friend, Matt Darning, is accused of murdering a former surfing competitor. I enjoyed the clever subterfuge involving the murder weapon. Everly is quite an energetic protagonist; however, the murder mystery; the slew of malicious threats and attempt on her life for investigating the crime; and dealing with a rival tea house, Subtle Teas, that’s opened its door in Charm, North Carolina, is straining her nerves to the limit.

Author Bree Baker soothes the tension in the plot with humorous scenes that tickled my funny bone. The fitness bracelet is a hoot! The surprise gift from Great-Aunt Fran is one of my favorite parts of the book. The ending is a doozy as the hostile killer is caught and jailed. I wasn’t sure who that was going to be, but the reveal made perfect sense. I’m wishing for a happy ending for Everly and Grady. Great recipes included.

Bree Baker’s Partners in Lime is a solid cozy with an interesting mystery. I like the suspense, the viable suspects, and the lovely setting. But, I wish there was a lot less romantic drama and that the writing was less choppy. Furthermore, the series’ usually charming quirkiness has begun to lose its shine as some of the incidents seem forced, cheesy, and silly. This is the sixth book in the series and, although it can work as a standalone, I think you would better understand the characters and setting if you read the previous books.

The picturesque island of Charm, North Carolina is having an exciting summer with a ton of fun events. Our protagonist Everly Swan is also busy with her popular iced tea shop and a blossoming relationship with handsome Detective Grady Hays. However, tragedy soon strikes when a pro surfer is murdered. Everly’s friend and former fling, hunky paramedic Matt, instantly becomes the prime suspect. Everly quickly gets to sleuthing to help clear Matt’s name. However, there are numerous complications to her investigation: there’s a new rival fancy tea shop in town, Grady wants her to stay out of the murder investigation, and…the murderer keeps leaving her increasingly ominous messages.

The interesting mystery plot is quickly paced with some good twists and a great cast of viable suspects. I like that I couldn’t guess the killer’s identity until almost the very end. However, I wish that the big reveal was written more solidly and cohesively.

I love the wonderfully written description of Charm and small-island life. It is such a vibrant place filled with unique and fun people. I love the cast of interesting and memorable characters. I love the close-knit community and the warm feelings of family and friendship. Everly is a great and relatable protagonist. I particularly admire her bravery as well as her loyalty and dedication to her friends.

However, I wish the overall writing was stronger. The transitions between scenes can be quite abrupt. Moreover, some of the dialogue is stilted, unnatural, and info-dumpy. Everly’s interactions with possible suspects are sometimes so blunt, obvious, and nonsensical. I also got tired of Everly and Grady arguing about Everly’s snooping. These scenes are too repetitive and I am particularly bored of the romantic drama between Grady and Everly.

I usually love the series’ fun and quirky nature which really adds to the writing’s overall charm. However, many of the incidents in this book seem so contrived and silly like Everly’s incognito snooping mission to the rival tea shop and her inherited bright yellow car named Dharma which blares only one Beach Boys song.

Partners in Lime is a quick and entertaining mystery. I wish the writing was a lot stronger but I do love beautiful Charm and its interesting inhabitants.

Thank you to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for this book in exchange for an honest review.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

We return to Charm and things are really happening. Aunt Fran is in the mayor’s seat and she is trying to bring more tourists to Charm. There is a surfer competition coming to town and a local drama group is rehearsing a play that will be opening soon. It is after one of these rehearsals that tragedy occurs. A surf pro is found murdered on the beach near the outdoor theatre. It appears the murder weapon is a prop that is used by Everly’s friend and hunky EMT Matt in the play. Everly soon learns the two men have a bit of a past and Everly has a hard time after another secret connection is revealed. Evidence aside Everly trusts Matt and knows he had no part in the man’s death. This puts her at odds with her new boyfriend Detective Grady Hays who is just following the evidence. Everly receives a few blatant warnings to back off but she is determined to prove Matt’s innocence. Having the town’s gossip blog weighing in with rumors and innuendo doesn’t help. The new fancy teashop down the beach is also a huge distraction for Everly. Can she stay two steps ahead of the killer? Or is she about to make a charming exit from the Sun, the Sand, and the Tea?

You know the characters are strong when you look forward impatiently for the next book in the series and worry about them when you read the new synopsis. That is how I feel about Everly, Clara, Fran, Grady, Denver, Denise, Matt, and even Lou and Maggie. The author has created well-developed characters that continue to surprise me. I am thrilled Grady and Everly are dating, but what about that blasted curse? It is great that Fran is the Mayor but Clara seems a little lonely after the two of them being attached at the hip for years. Matt being wrapped up in a murder when he truly is the sweetest guy. These characters are grown over the course of this series and are some of my cozy favorites. I know from page one that I am going to enjoy whatever adventure they take me on.

The adventure this time was very enticing this time because I wanted answers just as much as Everly. I was concerned by some of the risks she took but that is just who she is. She continually puts the needs of others in front of her own. There were some incredible twists and a surprising secret revealed. I was on the wrong track for most of the book but when we got to the showdown/reveal I swear my heart stopped for a good few beats. To say what happened is shocking is an understatement and I don’t want to spoil anything so I’ll stop there. Okay, one more thing, there is a cliffhanger, Oh Bree Baker, you are testing me!!

So my virtual vacay to Charm was one heck of a roller coaster ride and I loved every minute of it, yes, even the cliffhanger. The beach was delightful, the tea was tasty and as always the residents of Charm, North Carolina made me feel right at home. Oh! and the gift Fran gave Everly was so cool!!

Note- I have heard the next book in this series is scheduled to be the last. I hope the powers that be change their minds because this series is absolutely divine. I recommend reading every book in order to really get to know the people of Charm. The mysteries are awesome too!

The Seaside Cafe Mystery series is absolutely one of my very favorite cozy mystery series. This "charming" series is set in Charm, NC in the Outer Banks area. Everly Swan runs Sun, Sand, and Tea which features dozens and dozens of iced tea varieties and, of course, yummy food and desserts! Everly's great-aunts, Fran and Clara, are her only relatives. They live on the island and dote on Everly as if she were there own child. They, along with other "regulars" and newbies, make this series a delight to read.

The latest book in the series is Partners in Lime. A surfer ends up dead, and, of course, Everly can't stop herself from getting involved in solving the murder. Everly's involvement in the murders is a thorn in Detective Grady Hays's side. What was at first an annoyance is now much more since Grady cares deeply for Everly. Since Everly cares about Grady too, she tries and tries to not get involved, but somehow, someone she cares about gets accused of murder or is in danger! Can you blame her? Can you blame him? Nope! This time her friend Matt is accused of murder, so Everly just has to look for more suspects!

I love this book. Everly's living my dream life (I can do without the murders though.). She lives by the ocean in a small, quaint town and runs a tea shop! And her BFF runs a bookshop with her dad. Ocean, tea, books, family. Yep. I can handle it. As always, the murder leads Everly to many different conclusions about whodunit. Solving the mystery along with her is so exciting! Of course, danger follows Everly when she's on the scent of the murderer.

I will deeply miss these wonderfully written characters, whom I've grown to love, when this wonderful series draws to a conclusion in the next and final book. Though you can always read these books as stand-alone books, they're so much better when you start at the very beginning...a very good place to start. I highly recommend Partners in Lime!

When the Lost Colony rehearsal turns deadly Everly decides she needs to help number one suspect Matt even though it threatens her relationship with boyfriend Dectective Hays. As the clues and threats pile up Everly knows she is in danger but just cannot let Matt lose everything because he is being falsely accused.

I have read and enjoyed all the books in this series. The story has mystery, romance and humor. The protagonist is relatable as a caring person that struggles with her self confidence and there is a great cast of secondary characters. Thanks to Poisoned Pen Press and NetGalley for a complimentary book. The opinions expressed are my own.

Oh my goodness! I need to know more, can’t wait for next book to come out!

I loved this instalment, had just the right amount of intrigue, suspense and even romance. I am so sad that the series ends soon. I wish the publishers would change their minds.

As I have said before one of my favourite things about the books is the sense of family, friendship and how the community comes together. This time was no different , Everly tries to clear Matt of Murder by asking questions which land her in hot water with Grady. I just love all the characters and could totally see them in a hallmark mystery on tv.

I highly recommend this series to all my cozy mystery loving friends

PARTNERS IN LIME is the sixth book in the Seaside Café Mystery series by Bree Baker. Set on the island of Charm, North Carolina, this charming book features protagonist Everly Swan and her delightful tea shop Sun, Sand, and Tea. Ms. Baker has developed a strong cast of characters alongside Everly. I especially love her elderly aunts, one who just happens to be the mayor of the town and the other who runs their shop, the Blessed Bee, which sells all sorts of bee products from their hives. Everly is also dating Detective Grady Hays and their relationship is moving forward and provides a subplot thread throughout the story. The author’s strong descriptive voice captures all that island life has to offer. There are beaches and tourists, plus surfers coming into town for a competition. Alongside that is the backdrop of the upcoming historical production, The Lost Colony with its more than one hundred participants. Ms. Baker intertwines the events and people together in a convincing fashion, setting the stage for murder and lots of suspects!

When the reigning surf champion is found murdered, Everly’s one-time fling, Matt, is the prime suspect. Here the storyline fell off for me as Everly ignores all the evidence piling up against Matt. Despite her detective boyfriend’s advice and warnings, she repeatedly meets up with Matt, even in unsafe locations. At times it felt like the author wanted to introduce a love triangle but wasn’t sure if that was the direction she wanted to go. Fortunately, it’s resolved by the end. That said, the author weaves a tightly plotted mystery with plenty of clues and suspects to keep the reader guessing and writes an edge-of-your-seat reveal. With a heartwarming and hopeful ending, Partners In Lime will appeal to fans of this series and will have us coming back for more.

While running the Sun, Sand, and Tea shop, Everly serves up all sorts of tempting treats and drinks. Thankfully, Ms. Baker includes several recipes at the back of the book to entice a hungry reader.

I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Spoilers. The title has nothing to do with the mystery. Everly's new car gets flat tires in a busy town with no witnesses. Then, her beau is right there coincidentally. Then, to get around, she drives a golf cart. Now, don't say that's not the dumbest thing. So, she's defied the detective at every turn, but he's madly in love with her nonetheless. Why? He agrees to allow her to continue to lie to him. No one does that. Finally, due to her impulsive behavior she distracts him enough to have him pierced by an arrow. Then, she interferes with the EMT, who repeatedly tells her to move so he can get blood to the victim. The EMT, is the first suspect, who had no reason to be at the scene because he'd been suspended. The murderer claims he saw that suspect input a password. He was then able to access his phone. Plus, the arrows from the play had never been locked up in the storage area. The suspect still had the key to the prop room at the theater even though he'd been stacked. Everly believes she's cursed. That's why her boyfriend was shot. She IS cursed with a scattered brain and frenetic mode of living.

We return to Charm, North Carolina where Everly Swan runs her tea shop. Everly and detective Grady Hayes are finally together! But things are not going smoothly for the two when Everly gets involved in solving the murder of a pro surfer. Her good friend Matt is suspected and Everly knows he is innocent. I love everything about this series. Even the little things like Everly's dislike of her fitness bracelet. I love her aunts and especially the gift from Aunt Fran. This series is so good. It has amazing characters that you can't help but root for, I thought the mystery was good. I didn't suspect the killer at all. There was one point where the author had my heart in my stomach but the ending somewhat redeemed it. I can't wait to read the next book even though I know it will be the last. I don't want it to end. I had to wait a loooonnnggg time for the audible edition to come out and it was driving me crazy but now that I've discovered that the last book in the series is coming out in March I'm kinda glad because this one ended on a bit of a cliffy. Though the description for the book seven is a bit of a spoiler alert so I'm not too antsy. :-)

Love the town of Charm and Everly and Grady and the aunts and all their crazy shenanigans. Solid mystery, buttinsky heroine, long-suffering detective hero. Baker delivers classic cozy tropes with panache. And the icing on the cake is Therese Plummer's flawless narration.

Three and a half starts, rounded up to four. The sixth book in the Seaside Mystery Series with central character, Everly Swan. Everly is from a family who is purported to have some mystical powers and a curse that says if she leaves the town of Charm and loves a man he is in mortal danger. In books leading up to this one, Everly has dated several men and now she has developed a stronger relationship with head of the town's law enforcement, Grady. Their relationship is put to the test when Everly's friend, a former boyfriend, Matt is accused of having killed a man with a crossbow.

As Grady does his job, Matt looks more and more guilty, and Everly, who is convinced of his innocence get more and more angry as Grady follows the evidence. Turns out, Matt and the man have a history, does that play into his death or is someone trying to frame Matt?

The book is filled with surfers who have come to the Outer Banks for an exhibition along with the regular residents of Charm who are probably well known by readers of the series. As things move from bad to worse, Everly risks alienating Grady as she seeks to find the real killer and exonerate Matt.

Readers of the series will enjoy getting caught up with the relationships that form secondary storylines. While this mystery stands alone, thee may be some information and relationships that are on-going that will be better enjoyed if the reader has read at least some of the books earlier in the series.. For followers of the series, this will be another enjoyable chapter in Everly's life, along with a number of other regular characters.

My thanks to Poisoned Pen Press and NetGalley for providing me with an advance copy for review. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

I received a free advanced copy through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Mystery novels are my go-to when I’m looking for a quick read. Cozy mysteries are even better at filling these gaps in my reading. This book definitely falls into that category. It is also part of a series, and I have not read the earlier installments. I came into this book unfamiliar with the characters and setting.

Author Bree Baker does a great job of setting up character and setting in a way that catches the reader up on the series without over-explaining (for the most part). If you start with book 6 like me, you won’t feel lost at sea. The only thing I can think of that might be spoiled by reading out of order is the romantic element.

The main problem I had with characterization in this novel is the focus on the protagonist’s weight and size. Granted, many women’s thoughts focus on their body size and weight (which is a big cultural issue that I have a lot of problems with), but I felt adding those details in did nothing to help me better know the character of Everly Swan. The size of her pants has no bearing on the plot of the novel, the course of her romance, or the success of her business. It could have very easily been left out. The references left this narrative feeling a little out of touch in our current “body positive” or “health at any size” cultural movements.

That said, I enjoyed this book for the fun, quick read it is. The mystery itself was enough to keep me reading, and I enjoyed the relationships that were established throughout the book. Don’t open this book hoping for a deep, thought-provoking read. Take it for what it is and enjoy the cozy ride through the Outer Banks.

Everly really annoyed me in this one. All the little comments about how she’s gained weight really got me. And then all the darn meddling. I get it. It’s what happens in cozy mysteries, but I really felt enough was enough. Just listen to Grady for once. It’s not like when you don’t listen to him things seem to go your way. But no. She just does her own thing. The mystery itself was really good and I always love reading about Charm, but those couple things made me knock off a couple stars. I’d also like to know what step counter/ fitness device she wears since I’d love to know which device actually states be more active.

Visiting Charm, North Carolina, is always a treat, breezy fun and filled with engaging characters. Everly Swan's life is definitely on an upswing. Her tea shop is tjriving and her love life improving. But when a murder takes places and her ex is implicated, Everly does everything to help clear his name, even to yhe point of jeopardizing her new relationship. While I like Everly, her nosiness is off the charts. No wonder her boyfriend gets mad. Still it is well written with a lively plot with just enough red herrings to keep you guessing. I'm getting pretty torn on these books. I like the story, I like the characters, but I'm not like the character actions. Especially Everly. I can appreciate her wanting to help her friends, and I can appreciate that if a 'lead' falls in her lap that she'd want to investigate it. But her boyfriend is the island detective. And he is good at his job. I don't understand why she is actively trying to find leads and investigate when he is more than capable and has proven so time and again. But obviously if she doesn't do these things there isn't a story. So my frustration is with the author. She's essentially dumbing down Everly by having her "think she knows better/knows more than Grady". I almost want to stop reading this series because of it, but I want to see what happens with these characters.

So there is a play and Matt is one of the actors where he shoots a longbow. And he's one of the only people who can shoot it. At a practice he is seen arguing with Kai, one of the surfers who is in town for the Outer Banks events. Of course Kai turns up dead, looks like he was shot with an arrow, so Matt is the immediate suspect. Instead of letting Grady do his job (even when he asks her to let him do his job) she insists on investigating herself.

And the things she does are so inappropriate it's mind-blowing. She discovers Kai (soon to be ex) wife Tara is staying on the island so Everly shows up at her house to offer her condolences and to question her. She learns that Matt was also married to Tara, and Everly freaks out and runs away. And is almost run over by a car. And she's sent a threatening video. And arrows are arranged on her lawn warning her away, and an arrow is shot into her seat rest as she was stalking a party.

She also disguised herself and visited the new tea house to check out the competition. Which I thought was just stupid because it seems like most shop owners in town know each other so eventually the woman is goin to meet her and know she lied to her. So that was just dumb. She also went back to Tara's AGAIN and no surprise that didn't go over well. Basically, she spent the whole book sticking her nose into other people's business, drawing the wrong conclusion, and once again found herself in a situation where she was about to die.

Turns out one of the surfers is the one who killed Kai. She thought it was one of the surf sponsors that killed Kai so she was totall off base. He kidnaps Everly FOR REASONS (seriously, no idea why) and was driving somewhere to do something with her. But Grady had figured out some time ago who the real killer was and was just trying to get evidence. So he caught up to them on the road, the surfer (I can't remember his name) flipped the car. Grady got to Everly but the surfer shot Grady with an arrow. Grady was taken to the hospital. Everly was sure it was the curse. So she tells him she loves him but then walks away because she doesn't want his death to be on her hands.

So I'm curious to see what happens with Grady and Everly. But gosh I hope the author does a much better job in the next book. Don't make Everly so stupid, have a better reason why she needs to look into the murder. Like Grady is out of town. or sick. or something. But if she keeps up with this "everly knows best" nonsense this series is going to fall apart quickly.
