Reflections on the wonder of Christmas by Christianity's most beloved writers.A Light Has Dawned recovers the best Advent and Christmas articles from half a century of Christianity Today. Guiding the reader through Advent, Christmas, and the climax of Epiphany and including contributions by Billy Graham, Tim Keller, Elisabeth Elliot, Ruth Bell Graham, Eugene Peterson, and more. A Light Has Dawned will inspire readers with the wonder of Advent and Christmas.
I was really looking forward to this book. It's not a devotional, but rather a series of short and not-so-short articles meant to make you think, centered around Advent and Christmas. Some are more successful than others, and the difference is glaring. In the end, I realized I was just skimming and not very interested in some of the entries. An early article in particular, written by a music pastor, I think, was just bad. It frequently references another writing by a different musical person - why not just use the source material? All-in-all, a somewhat disappointing read.
A wonderful collection of meditations from the 1950’s to the present, compiled from Christianity Today. Though there is one mediation I found problematic, irritating, and just odd in its reasoning (Christmas Unplugged, skip it!), this is a fantastic collection. The writings from Peterson, Keller, and Yancey were excellent as were many by “lesser knowns”; but my favorite was from Thomas Howard and I will revisit it in future years. A unique and very Christ-centering collection for the entire period of Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany. Superb.
