Backlash: How China's Aggression Has Backfired

Rate this book
By the time one finishes reading this penetrating book of history, politics, and public health, the very real COVID-19 crisis of 2020 becomes a metaphor for China’s quest for hegemony. Helen Raleigh shows how Communist China, like the virus that began there, has spread its influence aggressively around the world. She begins with China's suppression of people within its own borders. She then shows how China has asserted geopolitical influence in the neighboring South China Sea region and across the whole world, through the use of subtle and not-so-subtle tactics, as it attempts to become the most powerful nation on earth. She concludes, however, that the Chinese aggression has backfired, as much of the rest of the world, especially powerful nations like the United States, though initially caught off guard, have begun a retaliation against China’s aggression and mishandling of the COVID-19 outbreak. Helen Raleigh is a recognized American entrepreneur, writer and speaker. She is a policy fellow at the Centennial Institute and a senior contributor to The Federalist. Her writings have also appeared in various national media, including The Wall Street Journal, Fox News and National Review. She is the author of several books, including her award-winning autobiography, Confucius Never Said. Equally important is the fact that she was born in China and has first-handedly experienced dramatic cultural and political changes in modern Chinese history. She retains the unique perspective of having both immersed in Chinese culture and thrived in the Western, and illuminates both intimately in the text. This book behooves every thinking American to better understand China’s place in the world, as well as China’s ambitions and strategies to achieve its Sino-centric goals.

Helen Raleigh was born in China. In 2013 she became a citizen of the USA, where she became alarmed by the growing flirtation with socialist ideology on the American left. She writes that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has a comprehensive plan for its world dominance and establishment of a new world order, and the West—due to COVID-19—has only recently woke up to this ambition. The “China Dream” is to replace the USA and become the sole worldly hegemon. She believes the only way to understand China’s actions is to understand its history, and she provides historical context in every chapter to better understand the issue at hand. There are chapters on: the Uyghur Muslims, the Social Credit System, Hong Kong (The Fragrant Harbor), Taiwan, The South China Sea (the world’s most dangerous water), The One Belt and One Road Initiative, The United Front Work Department (UFWD), which includes fascinating accounts of the Confucius Institutes. The author thinks Trump’s policy towards China was needed. She draws a distinction between the CCP and the Chinese people. This is a book that will make you think at geo-strategic level. There are no easy answers, but it will give you a better and richer understanding of the issues involved in our policy towards China.

“He who holds the firewood for the masses is the one who freezes to death in wind and snow." - This Chinese Proverb aptly lays out the premise of how the Chinese Communist Party, CCP, has undertaken the initiative of world-wide dominance. Helen Raleigh's well-researched book suggests the Sino-US relationship needs to be balanced, fair, and reciprocal. Yet, Beijing's mishandling of the Wuhan virus, one belt-one road initiative, surveillance on its citizens, its ethnic-cleansing of Uyghur Muslims, and its aggression in the South China Sea all paint a picture that clearly shows there are a growing mistrust and disgust for the CCP’s miscalculated agenda. The tragedy of the Wuhan virus with its world-wide death, destruction, and dissolution of trust may be a blessing in disguise in that it exposes the true nature of tyranny and central planning. An important book that needs to be shared, read, and talked about as it foretells what could happen in freedom loving republics if we take our eye off the prize.

Very enlightening. Starts with a brief history of China and then goes into the ways China is trying to take over the world including the almost 100 China communist organizations run by China on college campuses. Ends with the sad and ongoing China born covid virus and the cover up which led it to become a world wide pandemic.
