Goodwill towards others never felt so good…

Noelle Cameron won’t let being basically homeless in a new state dampen her Christmas spirit.

Thanks to her coworker, she has a temporary housing possibility. However, her new potential roommate is about as welcoming as the Grinch. But Noelle refuses to let scowls and snide remarks about her festive attire steal her joy. Winning over the cranky Lennox will be a victory sweeter than sugar cookies.

Lennox Sutton doesn’t want to live with anyone. Unfortunately, one well delivered guilt trip from her sister means taking in the woman wearing a reindeer headband and an attitude that goes past glass half full to it completely spilling over. Now she’s stuck with a person who embodies everything Lennox dislikes about the holiday season. But beneath the ugly sweaters shines someone whose company Lennox could enjoy.

A meddling sister and a dash of Christmas magic might have these two polar opposites finding new ways to enjoy the season of giving.

"Don't be mean," she said in a frustrated whine.
I rest my chin on her stomach and smiled up at her. "But that's what I'm good at."

━━━━━━━━━━━ ♡ ━━━━━━━━━━━

I feel like my original review that only says "delightful" is a perfect encapsulation of what this book was, yet I feel it does not do it justice. And the fact that I haven't written any reviews lately is haunting me so here I am to squeal about one of the only books I've been able to enjoy recently!

Was this book perfect? Absolutely not. I could complain about how some inner monologue annoyed me a touch, or maybe I could cry about how we never got to see the shower scene, but this book was everything I needed and more.

It was a fast-paced, lesbian romance between two black women. It was grumpy sunshine and wow. When I tell you I was frothing at the mouth for Lennox... It's the way my type is scary fems but I'm so on board with this scary stud we have here. Her grumpiness (and lowkey mean demeanor) made me love her more and more (grumpy men NEVER do it for me but grumpy women are just...). Her eventual softening and explicit and thoughtful acts of affection and love later on just won me over even more, if that's even possible. And she was so hot I'M SORRY.

"How do I look?"
"Fuckable."

Just slap me on the face already tbh. I was just so obsessed with her whole demeanor like?? Can anyone point me in the direction where these exist in the wild? In real life? PLEASE??

She drained the rest of her juice and again crowded my space to place the glass in the sink. I expected her to move back, but instead she placed her hands on either side of me effectively boxing me in. Lennox licked her lips, the very lips I'd been fantasising about since day one...

Like?????? Ok here's one more:

She smirked and I held my breath as she approached. She placed her warm fingers on my chin and gently pushed up. "Much longer and you might start drooling. Night." *she leaves the room*

EXCUSE ME???????????? And now when she lowkey rejects her but I find it to be the hottest thing in the world...

She tilted her head and a smirk pulled at her lips. "You want me to turn you on?"
I sank my teeth into my bottom lip. "I'd love nothing more."
She stared at me for a moment, seemingly contemplating her next words. "Maybe next time, Dasher."

I'm weak in the knees tbh 😞

I was a little less taken with the sunshine fmc, a little too childish and bubbly for my preference (I've just never met someone like that in real life so I always find it jarring when it's in like...every book), though it kinda worked? Noelle is her name, I forgot to mention, and she had Lennox aching for her, so mad respect tbh. Do I wish I were her? Just a lil. I thought her obsession with Christmas was endearing and she was a very kind person, I liked that :)

THE SEX. Dude, listen idk if this is the best-written smut in the world but it DID SOMETHING TO ME. Idek, I was so invested, wide-eyed, and slack-jawed the whole time - no doubt about it. Another thing I can really appreciate about books with masc love interests is that the BRING THE STRAP - blessed. And it was a unique one too, listen, it was fabulous. AND IT WAS FUNNY TOO LIKE WHEN IT WAS OVER SHE- SHE- 😭😭😭 I can't even.

And at the end it was so?? cute?? Like the grumpy, icey one who hates Christmas did so much for her lil girl STOPP I can't take it. She treats her like a princess and it makes me WEAK. Also, no homophobia - lgbtqness was completely normalised and it was SO NICE LIKE 😭😭😭. As mentioned, I envisioned Lennox's house like the cottage from The Holiday (movie) and ugh this was just so cozy and pleasant and *inhale* delightful *exhale*. BYE!

2020 Jingle Books Bingo (#JingleBooks🎄): Frisky Christmas

Short, sapphic, and sexy. Temporary roommates + grinchy heroine falls in love with Christmas-loving heroine. I really liked the character dynamics but wish there was another round of proofreading or copy edits (I noticed enough typos to irk). It’s really disappointing because the story is so good, but then I’d notice a grammatical error every few pages or so. This detracted my enjoyment enough that I docked a star. That being said, I still encourage you to read the story because it’s really sweet and I don’t regret reading it.

Quick short read, the usual Christmas cliches.

Lennox is a grinchy grump, set in her ways. Noelle loves Christmas and is an excitable doll.

The two are so opposite, but Noelle is just what Lennox needs to find the joys in life.

Basic, but nice.

3.4 ⭐️ A spicy WLW holiday romance.

Let’s start off with the fact the spice is immaculate. The author writes tension incredibly well and this was a really steamy and cosy read. It’s perfect for winter if you want something relatively low-angst and Hallmark movie esq.

I felt like the writing could have done with some editing and could have been more descriptive. With colours it was always brown leaves and brown trees etc. It definitely was very repetitive/simplistic with the language used at times.

Saying that it made me smile, and it was a cute and fast holiday read.

Rep// Black lesbian MC , Black (described at one point as a ‘stud’) lesbian MC. Central relationship is sapphic / women loving women.

TW’s listed below, please skip if you don’t want vague spoilers.

Tw// brief argument, sex scenes (multiple including: masturbation, oral, fingering, and toy/strap use.)

This was just the sweetest Christmas sapphic novella. I'm a grumpy/sunshine stan first and a person second, so I ate up the characters' Grinch/Christmas lover dynamic. Noelle and Lennox had great chemistry throughout, even when they were butting heads, and the sexual tension between them was really well done. Lennox was a grumpy grump and kinda an asshole at the start... but really showed up for Noelle towards the second half and won me over. The descriptions of Noelle's Christmas outfits were just really fun, and I loved her generally positive (but not gratingly naive) vibe. The pacing at the end was a little quick for me, even for a novella, but overall this just put a smile on my face. Just a really well done, whirlwind holiday romance!

Glad this was my first experience with Meka James, will definitely be trying more from her in the future!

1.5 ⭐️ — okay this was not for me. I've always been a fan of grumpy/sunshine but lennox was just straight up mean. being mad that your new roommate tries to get to know you and then insult her too? hell no. I was glad that noelle was putting her in her place but then it took a whole 180 and they have sex and become best buddies...? just no.

I am such a ridiculously huge fan of Meka James. I’ve yet to read anything by her that hasn’t completely hit my readerly spot in all the best of ways. Being Merry is absolutely no different. This grumpy/sunshine delight is the perfect bite-sized novella treat for the holidays. It features some well done forced proximity romance and some delish wlw love. 💕

Oh, and did I mention it’s sizzling hot? 🔥😉 Ms. James has a knack for writing sex that never fails to make me tingle from head to toe, and this story is no different. Lennox and Noelle get busy with a thirsty vengeance and I am here for it.

Noelle is a bubbly little Santa’s helper who sets her sights on “befriending” and breaking through Lennox’s tough exterior. Lennox, on the other hand, has the Grinch schtick on lock—but has a super sweet and squishy side underneath that can’t help but fall for Noelle’s over-the-top saccharine personality. The grumpy/sunshine trope might very well be one of my absolute favorites, and Ms. James adds a little something extra and unique that makes this one of the most satisfying versions I’ve read in longer than I can remember.

If you’re a fan of holiday romance, watching the Grinch find her Christmas spirit in the form of a bouncy holiday elf, or just plain love a good FF romance, then this should top your holiday reads list this year! Be sure to keep scrolling for a sneak peek teaser excerpt!

Being Merry by Meka James is a cosy, soft, low-conflict romance novella that will warm your heart this festive season.

When Christmas-aficionado Noelle meets grumpy bar-owner Lennox, it seems like a match made in hell. Lennox doesn’t want a roommate, especially not one that wears deely-boppers and thigh high socks with candy canes all over them. Noelle spreads Christmas cheer like glitter, and there’s no escaping it. But while they’re about as different as could possibly be, they end up finding some common ground, and Noelle’s overwhelming positivity quickly melts Lennox’s Grinch-y little heart.

I adored this. It was fun, fast-paced and joyful, the perfect thing to get you in the mood for the festive season. Like Lennox, years of working retail have kind of killed my love for Christmas, but I found Noelle’s excitement infectious. There are lots of great little details, like Noelle’s numerous ugly Christmas-themed outfits, and the two characters have a brilliantly flirty dynamic from the get-go. I also really appreciated the sex scenes, which were brilliantly written and steamy as hell. I was sat fanning myself, because damn, Meka James knows how to turn up the heat.

There’s no big conflict in this one, no dark moment, and it really worked. As a seasoned romance reader, I was kind of dreading seeing how things were all gonna blow up, and nothing did. The author said ‘good vibes only’ and I respect that. It worked perfectly for this book. The cosy vibes were impeccable and it was lovely to read something where the biggest drama revolves around the slightly excessive number of Christmas decorations in the living room. These two women were perfect together, and I had an amazing time reading about their budding romance. I’d absolutely recommend this to anyone who’s looking for an angst-free, cosy Christmas read, and I’m excited to pick up another Meka James book in future!

Fantastic holiday read with enough heat and heart to keep you warm and happy.

I had the pleasure of reading an early copy of this gem. It's a total opposites attract under the mistletoe. In line with true Ms. James and the "being" series, this is not too much drama, all the sexy times and great, authentic characters. I really hope she keeps on with this little neighborhood, each story makes me want to figure out who lives next door and spy through their windows.

“Your good mood charm will be right where you left her.”

(Merry Christmas if you celebrate it, my friends! If not, happy Saturday!)

3.5 stars. This was a cute and super sexy Christmas novella, just what I was in the mood to read today. It's tropey to the max, but that's what I wanted and expected. Noelle, full of holiday cheer, finds herself in need of a place to stay after moving to a new state. She ends up staying with her friend's sister, Lennox, who is grumpy to the max and only reluctantly accepts this new room-mate. They're obviously very different, grumpy/sunshine in the usual adorable ways. Noelle was born on Christmas and is determined to enjoy the holiday even more than ever, especially now that she's in a new state and away from family. Lennox is completely burnt out on the holiday, and isn't much of a people person to begin with. But they're irresistibly attracted to one another, and I just loved this little romance so much. Really sexy, just like the first novella in this series, but believable and wholesome all the same. I'm just always up for a good opposites attract romance. It's pretty insta-love, needed a better edit, and I do wish the ending hadn't forced the HEA quite so hard, but I nevertheless enjoyed this a bunch.

Kudos!

Being Merry is the next installment in the Desert Rose Hook-ups novella series by Meka James (a series that, if you’ve not already experienced, you really need to) and is the perfect holiday addition you never knew you needed.

Noelle is basically Buddy the Elf. Her birthday is on Christmas, she has a Christmas themed name, and she embodies the holiday like no other, rocking her ugly sweaters and over the top headbands like it is second nature. But there are REASONS for this, which we will get back to later.

Lennox on the other hand is a bit of a Grinch. Now she doesn’t totally hate the season, but she is much more interested in blowing stuff up on her gaming device than she is with decorating. Or shopping. Or… anything else actually related to Christmas.

How do our two ladies meet? This is a delightful bend to the forced proximity trope where Noelle is brand spankin’ new to the area and needs a place to stay that is a wee bit cheaper than the extended stay hotel she’s currently occupying. Lennox has recently broken up with her long term girlfriend and is looking forward to a little peace and quiet in her home. But, see, Lennox also has a sister a tiny bit on the meddling side who arranges for Noelle to move in with Lennox… without actually asking Lennox herself.

While Noelle’s perpetually holly jolly self is a little (okay, maybe a lot) grating to Lennox, we need to discuss some of her whys because… they are deep y’all. Noelle works as a child therapist, specifically for children with severe/long term medical conditions. Some of whom are terminal. So, yeah, you kinda have to love Noelle’s excessive joy when you take in all that her life encompasses.

As with every installment of the Desert Rose Hook-ups series, Being Merry brings high heat, instant attraction, all tied up with a sweat thread that makes you root for the couple and not just want them in bed together, but want them to recognize their full happily ever after. Thankfully Ms. James is adept at not only bringing the sexy times to scorching levels that will, undoubtedly, require you keep a nice full bottle of water handy, and maybe a fan, but also manages to bring a meaningful story with an emotional pull even in a few words.

Being Merry is an excellent choice for a quick holiday read with tons of fiery lady love that will have you begging for more. It ticks all the boxes for the perfect Christmas read amid all the hustle and bustle.

I liked this novella overall but had a few issues. There were a few typos that pulled me out of the story. It took me a while to empathize with Noelle and Lennox. They both seemed too extreme in the love/hate Christmas stereotype. The chemistry between them was good and the sex scenes were great but aside from sex I didn't really buy into them wanting to be in a relationship. which made the ending feel unrealistic and really rushed. There seem to be too few Black holiday stories (or at least ones I can find through my library) so I appreciated that. I liked the writing and pacing and would recommend it for people wanting a steamy Sapphic Christmas story.

This was a really enjoyable spicy, sapphic, holiday novella. Noelle is a pediatric psychotherapist who loves, wears, sings and enjoys all things Christmas. She's new to Arizona and a coworker tells her that her sister is looking for a roommate.

Lennox is grumpy and hates Christmas and being around people in general. You can imagine how much fun it is for the Grinch to be living with a Christmas elf.

This is like one of my favorite Christmas romances ever. It is the perfect grumpy/sunshine story and an amazing addition to the Desert Rose series. Noelle ends up becoming Lennox's roommates because she's work friends with Lennox's sister (The best secret matchmaker ever). Noelle has a difficult job but is a kind and optimistic person who LOVES Christmas and is trying to really find the joy of the holiday especially being in a new place, and with having a Christmas birthday.

Lennox got out of a relationship recently and IS not a Christmas person, or a cheerful person, or even a person who wants a roommate. Especially one she is inexplicably attracted to. However, the chemistry is undeniable and they are so sexy together and you just NEED them to be a couple. Watching Noelle bring out the best in Lennox and Lennox melt and care and adore Noelle is just wonderful and magical and super special. A fabulous novella.

Okay I think this was definitely my fave of the novellas! I love the grumpy/sunshine trope especially when we throw in a Christmas lover opposite a kinda Grinch, and add a dash of sexy!!

Even though Lennox tried her best to resist Noelle, she was never winning this! So if you want a quick, sexy, f/f holiday novella this one's got you!

This was such a lovely, steamy little holiday read, perfect for the first day of December. I'm a sucker for the sunshine/rain cloud dynamic, and that was Noelle and Lennox to a "T." The light conflict felt realistic, the banter was 100, and the relationship that was built in such a short time was just squishy, cosy, sexy adorableness. I haven't read any other Meka James, so I'm looking forward to checking out the other books in this series.

Sunshine and Winter

I always love stories like this one. One character is sunshine and rainbows while the other is Icey. I love them. The story is good and the sunshine character... Noelle.. I was really surprised by her profession. Way to go. And Zara. Yes.
