This heartwarming autobiography traces the author's challenge growing up in the foster care system during the 1950s and 1960s. While some children do not have a level playing field when it comes to privilege, finding the right mentors can be life-changing and give those born in poverty a fighting chance. This makes an excellent book club read and includes study questions to guide readers in discovering the importance of mentoring in today's turbulent times.

This memoir takes the reader on an emotional journey through a childhood of dysfunction, and the aftermath of a mother's mental illness and parental neglect. While often heartbreaking, the story has heartwarming moments, too. I love the message that a family can be formed by people who mutually care for each other, and that this bond is often stronger than blood relations. That the author found hope and made a happy life for herself and her family despite enduring so much loss is uplifting and inspirational. There are a lot of lessons to be learned from the author's experiences, and she shares her hard-won wisdom in the story. A highly recommended read.

I was absolutely awed by this memoir. I read it in one sitting. Gay’s writing style introduces you to characters in her life with various degrees of intimacy. Some are strangers others mentors others friends. Each of these interactions shapes her life and what an amazing person she has become despite the odds. I can’t imagine having grown up with such unengaged parents but still thrive in my faith and with my family.
I highly recommend this story for those who need hope. You can overcome any circumstance and become an amazing person.

Pure inspiration

Beautifully written, this memoir restores my faith in humanity. Far too many stories about foster care are horrifying, but this one is a joy. Thank you to Gay Kiser's "Village," and those out there making a difference to the least of us, a child.

Maturity began at a very early age. I felt like Gay was sitting beside me. Telling her story in a delightful, witty, sincere, narrative. I read this book in one evening. I could not put it down.
