A kidnap in Paris… a chase across Europe… one epic road trip! The Adventurers are on holiday when Maye warns of suspicious activity in Paris. Join them as they race from the French Alps to the ancient ruins of Rome on the trail of a dangerous gang with a legacy of secrets.
Another adventure with Lara, Rufus, Tom, Maye, Logan, Dee and of course Barney! This time, they get chased all around Europe finding letters with coordinates on them, coordinates that lead them from Paris ,to the Alps, to Rome and more! By finding all the letters they will be able to find some stolen treasure and return it to museums. And save Karim, Maye's brother, who got kidnapped. They have to save Karim and get to the treasure before a dangerous gang get to it first!
I enjoyed this book a LOT! If you like adventure and a face paced chase then this book is for you! I can never stop reading this series! LOVE IT! But to be honest, took one star off, because it got a bit boring and bland in the middle, it didn't cause much of a difference but I still would have liked it MUCH MUCH more if the middle would have been more interesting and intense. Still, this was a great book! :) I LOVE IT!
The adventure starts off innocently enough. Lara, Rufus and Lara’s friend Daisy, are hanging out together when they’re told that Lara and Rufus’ uncle won a trip to Portugal that he refuses to go on. Instead, their friend Tom and Tom’s mom will be going on the trip. The kids convince Lara’s mom to take Tom’s place on the free flight and the kids will join the moms in Portugal, making their way there with their uncle Logan and his girlfriend Dee in a … let’s call it a barely road-worthy van.
Of course, as they’re making their way to Portugal, the kids get a call from their friend Maye, who’s in Paris with her older brother Karim. The group agrees to meet up in Paris, especially after Maye tells them that she’s been following around some suspicious looking characters. When the gang arrives in Paris, they try to convince Maye that she’s just being paranoid, but things get serious when Karim is kidnapped by the same people that Maye has been keeping an eye on! Let the chase begin!
What follows is a fast-paced race across Europe – through the French Alps to the Vatican – as the Adventurers try to rescue Karim, solve the clues to a treasure hunt and avoid being captured by a notorious and dangerous gang.
As an adult reading this Middle Grade story, you do have to suspend your belief a little bit. There’s absolutely NO WAY that a group of young kids, with their hapless Uncle Logan in tow, could do even a smidgen of the things that this group gets up to – driving around Europe, racing snowmobiles across the Alps, fighting off dangerous gangsters – but honestly, who cares? The series is SO MUCH FUN. These are the types of books that will instill a sense of adventure and imagination and encourage a love of reading.
I think that kids will love this book – the characters are fun (four books later and Rufus is still my favourite) and their adventures are exactly the type of shenanigans that kids dream of having. The group is bigger than ever, and has expanded to include Lara’s friend Daisy and Karim’s little sister Maye, both of whom we met briefly in previous books.
The writing is easy for the Middle Grade set to follow along with and the action is paced quickly enough that they won’t lose interest in the story. There aren’t really any lulls in the fun and it’s nice to bring back recurring characters.
The Adventurers and the Continental Chase can easily be read as a stand-alone but I highly recommend that kids (and adults) pick up the rest of the books currently availably and enjoy the series from start to finish.
* Thank you to the author, Jemma Hatt, for providing me with an advanced e-copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.
If Jungle of Jeopardy suggested Survivor vibes in this fun book series by Jemma Hatt, then Continental Chase is like the championship round of Amazing Race.
A spring holiday trip encounters multiple detours as the group must change their mission. They intercept secret envelopes along the way, guiding them from Paris to the Alps to Rome and finally to Portugal.
The ruthless contestants in this unexpected competition are a dysfunctional family focused on riches versus our friendly, familiar team of Lara, Rufus, Tom, Maye, Daisy, Logan, Dee, and favourite canine companion Barney. Lara’s mother Mrs. Jacobs, Maye’s brother Karim, and even Mrs. Burt make appearances.
Want to run from a close call at the Eiffel Tower, ride snowmobiles in the French Alps, climb to the top of St. Peter’s Basilica, and roam through the Roman Forum? This is your opportunity, but catching up to or staying ahead of Claudine, greedy enemy leader, and her accomplices is a must.
As a geocacher, an added bonus for me was the use of coordinates via GPS to locate destinations.
Two things I find curious that I may or may not notice if I were still of middle-grade age: 1. If the group couldn’t afford airfare, how do they continue to pay for hotels and food when the trip is extended? Does Logan receive royalties for his cancelled Jungle Trek show? Do they rely on Dee’s family wealth? Did they use Karim’s credit card after he left it with them? 2. How did the “rust bucket” VW Samba never break down after journeying over some challenging terrain from country to country to country?
I would have loved a map, but I realize that is a bonus not a necessity.
Like Rufus, I’m always looking forward to the next adventure in the series.
° ,,Przygodowcy.

Czas spędzony z Przygodowcami to zawsze gwarancja dobrze spędzonego czasu!
