Keeping Your Balance looks at the challenge that Christians face in maintaining a biblical balance in seven key areas of life. These include the family and ministry; self-denial and liberty; patience and confrontation; the temporal and the eternal; the inner man and the outer man; reality and hope; and striving and trusting. In each of these categories, the author first highlights the balance that is clearly set forth for the believer in Scripture. Second, a discussion is presented of the symptoms that may be manifested when an individual loses balance in a particular area. The practical life consequences of that imbalance are also examined. An understanding of these tensions is absolutely vital for living a life to the glory of God.
Pam Hardy was the guest speaker at our church’s last Women’s Retreat, and she exhibited such wisdom, faith, and humility that buying her book was a no-brainer. You don’t often hear about the virtue of temperance, but this is what this book is all about — namely, how do Christians strike a balance in the areas of life where we tend to swing to an extreme? Family and ministry are both good and necessary things, but how do we give proper attention to both? Scripture talks about both self-denial and liberty; how do we discern when to exercise which? We fix our eyes on what is eternal, but we can’t very well neglect what is temporal. How do we cultivate hope without dismissing reality? Ultimately, “The truth and wisdom that we find in the living Word (Christ) and the written Word (Scripture) are what keep us balanced in an unbalanced world.” Pam leans heavily on the Word and so practices what she encourages her readers to do. I especially needed the chapter on the balance between striving and trusting in this particular season of my life. This is another book that is great to read individually or alongside others.
I went to a conference at my church with Pam as the speaker and after hearing her speak all weekend, I couldn't wait to read her book. Fabulous read for moms especially...as we tend to try to juggle too many things. So many truths, and so much wisdom from a seasoned mom and pastor's wife. Highly recommend!!!!
Seemed to cover common advice/counseling for living a more balanced life, not going to extremes. Theology wasn't really deep. Couldn't finish, didn't grab my attention. So I listened to a couple of her speaking sessions on this topic at the Grace Community Church website. It was okay.
