I sincerely hate to leave this review. I love the Mama Bear book and podcast, so imagine my shock when I started in and detested the study guide. I went through this with a group of ladies and we all had about the same reaction to it. I struggle to find anything redeeming about it. The format is weird, especially if you do it in a group. Many of the questions are so obvious as to not be worth the time to answer and definitely don’t lend themselves to good discussion or just reading comprehension from the corresponding chapter (I thought I left that behind in 5th grade). As the leader of the book study I ended up X-ing out much and only interested in using very little of the study guide. So if you are going through Mama Bear Apologetics, especially in a group, I recommend coming up with your own questions and using some of the Discussion Questions at the end of each chapter in the actual book. Again, I love the ladies on MBA and all the hard work they put into the podcast and book, but this one just fell short. Sorry!
Pretty good accompaniment to the book. I used this for our book group, but could easily have gone without it as the review questions at the end of each chapter lend themselves to enough discussion. The advantage I found to having the study guide is the included Bible references for comparison and contemplation. The study guide also presents in most chapters opportunity for break-outs or smaller partner/group discussion/ group work though a label as such is not used. Overall, I’m glad I had it, but it is not necessary.
I really appreciated the in-depth approach of this study guide. It forced me to slow down and think deeper about each chapter and really helped me process and remember what I read. I feel much more equipped now to discuss these topics with my kids and others. This is not a quick or easy workbook - be prepared to take your time and think! Doing this on the side and then meeting with others to discuss the questions at the end of each chapter in the main book was a great combo for me.
There are many things to love about this study guide, and it was very helpful for reflecting on specific scenarios and situations that may come up in conversations with your children. I thought that the Biblical passages it points to came across Scriptures that I wasn't as familiar with, and they were extremely relevant and valuable to read.
