Garrett Tyler thought he was leaving Ballard House, secure in the knowledge that Fate and love had finally won-out—even over the span of 250 years. Instead, he steps out the door and into the past, 1769 to be exact. But once again, Fate is at work. Garrett finds a beautiful woman being attacked. He makes sure she gets home and because of his kindness, she allows him to stay in an outbuilding—even believing his time travel story—while he figures out how he will get back to his life in the future. The more time they spend together, the deeper friendship they build, but one thing is going to rip her world apart.
Mercy Hansford is an independent woman for her time, running her own tailor shoppe, but her life will be forever changed by the attack. Now pregnant, she will have to leave her home for no one will do business with a loose woman, worse, she can no longer wed the man who wanted to marry her because she's been compromised. Yet, her strange boarder offers a solution: Go back home with him to the future, assuring her that unwed motherhood in the twenty-first century is not what it is in the eighteenth.
Should Mercy trust a man she barely knows? How can a man who couldn’t possible love her, love an unborn child conceived in violence? It might take a Christmas miracle to make this right.
Garrett was such a fun step back in time! If you enjoy time travel books, this is a nice little romantic novella to try out. I had not read the first book, Max, and I got the feeling that this book started immediately where the other book left off. I did feel a bit like I was walking into a story that was already partially told, however, I was easily able to catch up and from that point on, the author did a great job of making this book able to be enjoyed on its own, as well.
I really liked Garrett and Mercy. I was surprised at how easily Mercy believed Garrett’s story of being from the future, however, her belief in him and his willingness to help protect her after her attack allowed these two characters to develop a deep connection quickly. I thought the author did a good job of describing the differences that Garrett noticed of the world around him as he lived in the past.
This was a fun and unique story and a chance to escape from reality into the fantasy of time travel!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This was a quick read filled with interesting and fun characters. I really enjoyed how Garrett could time travel. Mercy was a great character and leading lady as well. Everything pretty much moves quickly including their relationship. I feel like that is typical of any novella out there. But I twas good story and I definitely recommend it if you enjoy Christian Historical Romances with a Christmas theme!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Garrett was an interesting time travel escape in novella form. Garrett, from 2019, goes back in time to 1769 in colonial Yorktown. I am a little confused as to why he ended up there, I am just assuming that like his friend from an earlier book he wanted to experience time travel. The time travel hows and whys was not really fleshed out in this book, he just needed to be at a certain place at a certain time it seems to go back. With that said, I am interested in reading the previous book and any more that could be in this series.
While looking around Yorktown, Garrett comes across a rather violent scene. Nothing is described but for trigger warnings, please be aware that the heroine, Mercy, has been viscously assaulted.
Mercy is wary of Garrett at first. Especially after what she has just experienced. I would say she is in some major shock and Garrett is bound and determined to protect her no matter what from now on. And as Garrett lives in Yorktown for about three months before his return, they begin to fall in love. Garrett and Mercy, especially, must consider the future now. Garrett with his knowledge of what will happen and Mercy with the result of her attack that night.
Will Garrett stay or will Mercy go? For a quick time travel read, this one was interesting.
I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
Garrett is the second installment from the Yorktown Christmas Time Travel series by Izzy James. I have not read the first book, Max, and feel that each book can be read as a stand alone. I liked this quick and easy to read novella. I enjoyed reading Garrett and Mercy’s story. I adored Mercy right from the start. Even though she experiences terrible trauma, she showed so much bravery and courage. I was so intrigued with both of them and wanted to see how it would end for them.
I am giving Garrett four and a half stars. I recommend it for reading who enjoy historical fiction, as well as, time travel stories. I look forward to reading the third book from the Yorktown Christmas Time Travel series.
I received a digital copy of Garrett from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
Garrett by Izzy James is Book 2 in the Yorktown Christmas Time Travel series. I have not read the first book in the series, but it seems as though this is a good standalone book. I have read other series by Izzy James and therefore I was intrigued to read this book.
I will say that the book was a little hard to follow along and I really didn't get the storyline until the 3rd Chapter. The setting is 1769 and it is a Time Travel book. Garrett steps out of his house and right into 1769. Garrett ends up being in the right place at the right time as he happens upon a woman, Mercy, who is getting attacked. He rescues her and makes sure she gets home safely. She returns the favor and allows him to stay at her property, in a guest house. He is trying to figure out how to get back home. Will he get back to the Present time or will he stay with Mercy as their friendship has flourished?
I really enjoyed reading about Garrett and Mercy, once I really grasped the storyline. It is short and easy to read Novella. Mercy really proved to be a brave woman who suffered through some traumatic things. Garrett was an interesting character in that he was really a present time character, living in the past. The story is fun and unique. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys Historical Fiction, especially Time Travel! Good BOOK!
This is a fast read filled with characters set against the time of 1769. I really enjoyed reading how Garrett time traveled back to a period where war was about to break out. The people had heard rumors about electricity but still thought it was strange. Garrett must be very careful that he doesn’t try to use his cell phone around anyone for fear he would be accused of witchcraft.
Mercy is very independent and doesn’t much like to be told what to do. Being on her own, she works hard and tries to keep to herself. Garrett was at the right place at the right time when he rescues Mercy. I think we are to assume that she was attacked but the author gives hints of how severe the attack was. The story moves at a quick pace and their relationship does as well. The story is good but I feel like it was rushed and I didn’t really connect with the characters like I usually do in a book.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
Garrett is a time travel novella that is written by Izzy James. This novella is 112 pages. This is book two in Yorktown Christmas Time Travel series. I have not read book one. While I was able to follow along in book two, I would recommend reading book one, Max before this one. That being said, it was still a good book that I enjoyed.
One of the things that I love about this author is the fact how well she writes the revolutionary time period so well. This book travels back to 1769. The author always writes this important part of history so well.
I loved Garrett and Mercy. Garrett walks into the year 1769 and right into Mercy being attacked. He is able to intervene and take her to safety. Mercy was so strong and had to overcome so much - she believes that Garrett is from the future. Since he did save her life, she gives him a place to stay. This is such a wonderful read.
While this is a novella, there's a lot of story packed into the 112 pages. The characters are fun and unique. It took me a few chapters to grasp the full storyline, but I was able to figure it out. I love this author, and will always try and read everything she puts out.
I received a copy of this book through the Celebrate Lit blogging program - all thoughts are my own.
What would you do if suddenly you’re in 1769 and you’re not sure how you got there or what is going on? That’s the world Garrett finds himself in. Can he figure out how to get back home? Does he really want to? And what will he do about Mercy?
This is the second book in a series and if you don’t read book one you might find yourself feeling slightly left out in the cold and not knowing what is going on. I do recommend reading the first book, Max, first to see what the story is all about and where this one starts off. Nobody likes feeling like they’re missing a piece of the puzzle.
I found this to be a fun story. It was a short read and read very quickly. Once I got into the book I simply could not put it down, and truthfully I didn’t want to either. I’m not normally a fan of time travel books but this one was really good and I really enjoyed it.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
Garrett is book number two in the Yorktown Christmas Time Travel series. I personally had not read the first book, and found that this seemed to read just fine as a standalone.
I must admit that time travel novels aren't generally ones that I often find myself all that drawn to... Christmas romances on the other hand are VERY much up my alley, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this one and how I would like it. While it took me a bit to figure things out at points (time travel IS confusing after all!), I overall found this to be a rather enjoyable read... certainly not my typical read, but a fun one nonetheless! It was quick paced, and as a novella was just the right length for this busy holiday season. I always love novellas for the holidays as it does tend to get so busy and it can be harder to have as much time to devote to a full length novel. If you enjoy a time travel novel, this is certainly one to check out, but even if it's not your typical cup of tea you might find that it will surprise you too!
**I received a complimentary copy for consideration. All thoughts are my own.
What I think you should know: Garrett by Izzy James in a Yorktown Time travel novella. Set in 1769 it is the second in the series/ While this could be read as a standalone I highly recommend that you read Max, the first story in the series, prior to starting this one. This story features Garrett who was a minor character and does give spoilers about the first novella.
What you might need to know: Mercy was attacked immediately prior to the start of the book.
What I think about this book: While this book started just after a very traumatic incident it was a very sweet and fun read. I loved getting to see 1769 Yorktown through the eyes of a historian who got to travel back in time. It was very interesting to see how Mercy reacted to Garrett, his story and his consistent kindness. It was fun to see how many risks Garret was willing to take to get back to his sime and take pieces of the past with him. I really enjoyed this story and would love to see more in this series and more from James.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
Garrett was an interesting, cute and quick read. I didn’t quite know what to expect when I picked it up, except that it involved time travel. However, while I liked the story, I did find it a bit confusing, especially the time travel aspect. But maybe there is more explanation in the first book in the series?
I loved being transported to pre-American Revolution Yorktown, Virginia with Garrett. I also liked getting to know Mercy, even in the midst of the trauma she has experienced. However, I did have a hard time buying that Mercy would fully understand Garrett’s explanation that he is from the future. I don’t know, I personally would probably be a lot more skeptical, but that’s just me! The ending also seemed kind of rushed, but again, maybe it wouldn’t have been if I’d read the previous book – Max- first.
Overall, this was a quick and interesting read and I highly recommend it if you are looking for something short that combines both historical fiction and time travel. 3/5 Stars.
*I received a copy of this book from the author and Celebrate Lit in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoyed this story, but I do think some confusion at the beginning and end would have been cleared up for me had I read Max before that. Without having done so, I understood the basics of what happened, but I was left with a few questions.
That being said, I enjoyed the story of Garrett and Mercy. I did think she came to believe him rather easily, but the author deals with the why satisfactorily. Mercy experiences the most horrible of situations life could give her and then in the next minute meets Garrett who shows her compassion, free of judgment for events she could not control.
While Garrett is the only one that has traveled to another time, both characters have been thrust into uncertain and unfamiliar situations. Trust needs to go in both directions for them to reach a positive conclusion, but trust is not easy.
I give this story four stars. I received a copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. The opinions and review are my own.
An intriguing time travel story takes Garrett Tyler back to 1769 Yorktown. He somehow must fit in with the community until he can find a way back home. He assists Mercy Hansford, a seamstress. The compelling plot offers the reader a historical taste with a modern twist. It’s fun to ponder what might happen if such a thing could occur. And what might transpire if someone from the future falls in love with someone from the past? The manner of how the time traveling happens is not addressed, but this fictional exploration of the possibility provides a great read. the characters are lifelike and seem so authentic. The plot doesn’t seem deep but holds the reader’s interest. It’s a short book and can easily be finished in an afternoon or evening. This could make for an interesting book club discussion. Whether you enjoy historical or just the idea of going back in time, try this novel. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
Garrett is a novella that takes you back in time. I admit, I felt a little lost in the first few pages since this is the second book in the series and I haven’t yet read the first, but I caught up quickly and the book read as a standalone. Garrett finds himself back in Yorktown, VA in the late 1700’s and meets a young woman at a terrible time in her life. Stranded in time, she puts him up in her spare room, and the two work hard together, as life isn’t easy in the 18th century. They survive a terrible storm, a jealous man, and the danger of being accused of practicing witchcraft, since Garrett manages to travel through time with his smartphone. In the midst of this, they fall in love. If you want to find out how love can survive 300 years apart, check out Garrett. It is a well-written story with some deep spiritual messages. Now I need to go back and read Max, the first book in the series!
This is a really short book so it is a quick read. I didn't realize it was part of a series, but I picked on what was going on fairly quickly. It is a good time travel story. I liked how quickly Mercy believed Garrett's story about being from the future. I'm not sure I would have been that trusting.
The events that happened kept you wanting to read more and figure out what happened. The differenced Garrett noted about the past and present were interesting to me and quite realistic. The author did good and packed quite a lot into just few pages. I really enjoyed it.
4/5
Thank you to the author/publisher for the review copy of this book via Celebrate Lit. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
Garrett examines a present-day man who travels back to Yorktown in the 1700s and meets a woman he attempts to keep safe. Her parents died and left her house and tailor business. One night when delivering a shirt, a drunken sailor attacks her and ruins her for others. Garrett finds her and seeks to keep her safe.
When it comes time for him to return to the present, he asks her to travel with him. Unfortunately, he initially forgets to mention he fell in love with her as well as the unborn babe she carries. The two prove that the past and present can mix. So if you enjoy historical Christian fiction, check out this book for yourself.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
I haven’t read many time-travel or time-slip novels, but I thoroughly enjoyed the novella by Izzy James. (No relation to me or my family.) Both the hero and heroine are strong characters, and I enjoyed watching them navigate the centuries between them both. Garrett was a kind man, and Mercy was sensible and a much more modern woman than many others of her century.
The only issue I had was keeping up with some of the characters. I had to go back and remind myself who was who. I think it would have been helpful had Garrett's timetravel in the opening chapter be a bit better developed.
I recommend reading "Max" the first of these two books. These are Christmas romances and time travel. They are both short reads. The ending of "Garrett" makes me wonder if there is going to be third book. These books are a break from reality though it involves a curse( max) and an attack to a young girl( Garett).
I received a complimentary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.
"Garrett" is a fun read. It is Izzy James's Book 2 in the Yorktown Christmas Time Travel series. I highly recommend you read the first book. I didn't read the first book. Garrett Tyler went from 2019 back to 1769 in colonial Yorktown. I believe it explained how Garrett went back in time in the first book. This is why I am saying it is a must to read the first book of this series. I was able to figure out what was going on but it took me a little bit.
Garrett steps out of his house and right into 1769. Everything is different. A major culture and time period shock. He runs into Mercy Hansford who is being attacked. He saves her. Keep in mind Mercy is a strong-minded independent woman. To thank him she allows him to stay at her guest house while he tries to figure out how to get back home. We learn she is pregnant after being molested. Garrett falls in love with her and wants to help and protect her.
The book is an easy read Novella. The characters are relatable. You see Garrett and Mercy's relationship grow through the text. The book reminds me a little bit like "Outlander" except a lot cleaner when it comes to sex. I would love to see Hallmark pick this series up. It is a beautiful Historical Fiction, Time Travel, Love Story.
I received a complimentary copy of this book by Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
Garrett is the second book from author Lizzy James Yorktown Christmas Time Travel series. This offering is a novella and was a bit confusing for me for a while because I had not read the first book in the series. Due to this I would recommend reading Book One, Max, first.
This is the story of modern day Garrett Tyler, who travels back in time to the year 1769. Needless to say, everything is different here - clothing, vocabulary, technology or the lack thereof, food, and even society. It is also the tale of Mercy Hansford. She is an independent, strong minded young woman from 1769. Unfortunately she has been molested and finds herself pregnant. Garrett wants to help and protect Mercy.
Author James did a lovely job with this Christmas novella. Her descriptive pen took me back in time and helped me see the differences between modern day and then. I chuckled a few times during conversations. Our modern words are sometimes far from their original meanings. The story progressed at a nice pace. The author included some life lessons, but also humor.
This is a delightful fun time travel fantasy book that is a quick, light read. I would recommend it for lovers of time travel fiction or those interested in reading one. It is a sweet romance that will make you smile. It gets a 3 star rating from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my honest words.
Again Izzy James brings time travel to life with a bit of adventure, entertaining characters, interesting storylines and Christian values. Give Garrett a read I am sure you like it!
If you love time travel, Christmas and romance then here is a fun novella for you. This book is part of a series and I would definitely recommend reading Max before reading Garrett. I didn't read Max first and there were some aspects of Garrett that I didn't really understand. I would also say that this is an instalove story (everything happens very quickly over a matter of days) and so if you love that trope, then I am sure you will enjoy this book. I really enjoyed the concept of a modern person being transported to the past. I also found it interesting that Mercy was happy to believe Garrett's story so readily.
