“기회를 드릴게요. 제게 용서받을 기회요.” 아버지는 딸을 팔았다. 그리고 딸은 지옥에서 돌아왔다. 생과 사가 뒤섞인 제국, 어린 레나 루벨은 아버지를 위한 제물이 되어 가련히 죽을 운명이었다. 하지만 6년 후, 모두가 죽었다고 생각한 여자아이는 다시 돌아왔다. 어린 양의 탈을 벗고, 사자가 되어.
A young child is sold and then cast into the Tomb as a sacrifice. There she learns many truths about the Empire and her own life. To survive she learns to adapt and works to get stronger. Then she is tasked by The Unforgiven King of the Dead with a secret mission. In order for Rena Rubel to be allowed to exist, she returns to the world, helps the Southern Duke with his silent war against the undead, returns to the capital to confront the Marquis that pushed her into hell, and agrees to conquer the Tomb for the Emperor. * * * * *----------* * * * *----------* * * * * I would probably rate this one higher if I'm ever able to complete it (DNF mid-second arc). I like the complicated mix of philosophy and emotions. It's easy to root for Rena. Actions have consequences and this one doesn't sugar coat backstories or outcomes. It doesn't forgive everyone with a lighthearted way nor does it feel like meaningless misery. That is a hard balance and should be praised. The narrative is, however, a long story with chronic flash backs, memory dives, and time line disruptions. That can get tedious and the magical rules are not consistent. While it has elements of the typical rebirth revenge genre, there are enough reconfigurations to make it entertaining. There is a whole series of mystery boxes to unveil for readers as well so expect frustrating cutaways, lacking proper nouns, or cliffhangers to force engagement.
