Its 1812. A year of political instability in Britain. The government is unpopular; high taxes to pay for the war, the industrial revolution and the resulting unemployment are the root causes of social unrest. To make life even more complicated the Americans are threatening war along the Canadian border, opening a second front. Marty neutralises a threat to his operations on the peninsula by travelling to Paris, gets diverted to North America to prevent a French attempt to provoke an early start to that war, then goes back to Spain for the battle of Salamanca. The action builds as he supports Malta, which is denuded of troops to support Wellington in Spain and discovers a white slavery operation that is taking young girls from England and selling them in North Africa. Their children kidnapped and shipped to Tortuga by the gang responsible; Marty and Caroline return to the Caribbean to attempt a rescue. Another all action adventure instalment of The Dorset Boy series .
Biography I am descendent of a long line of Dorset clay miners and have chased my family tree back to the 16th century in the Isle of Purbeck. I have been a public speaker at conferences for most of my career in the Aerospace and Automotive industries and was one of the founders of a successful games company back in the 1990’s. Now in my sixties, and living in the Netherlands Antilles, I finally got to write the stories I had going around in my head for many years. Thanks to inspiration from the great sea authors like Alexander Kent, Dewey Lambdin, Patrick O’Brian and Dudley Pope I was finally able to put digit to keyboard and start writing the Dorset Boy series. I make no apologies that I write for myself. The stories emerge as I write and I am often surprised by the twists and turns that they take.
Before you read this one, please realize it is a continuation of a series: you will need to read the series in order or the characters / plot may not make much sense to you. This isn't your typical historical fiction novel as it focuses in on the continued life and travails of a young man. There is good interplay between the characters and the author certainly knows how to tell a story. You will also get a taste of old-fashioned ship battles as well as a little bit of a history lesson. I am reading each of these in order, going to the next one immediately and can’t seem to put them down. I picked this up for “free” with my Kindle Unlimited subscription vs. the regular price of $3.99 – I certainly received more than $3.99 of entertainment value and I am sure you will, also.
Given that is fiction, although the author does talk about the real events he bases some of it on, it is very fast moving. It sometimes seems to flit from one half of the world in no time at all. He comes across as the forerunner to 007 but unlike James, leaves the chicks to themselves, refreshing. Another reviewer points out that there art too many characters to keep up with, have to agree sometimes. One may well wonder what his final takeout number will be.
The series grows on you, and given the (now) 15 titles, keeps you well fed.
Quite entertaining, but let down by unexplained gaps in the story, as though the author was impatient to reach 'the next good bit', overlooking chances to enrich the gaps with details.
A continuing of the Dorset Boy saga. It’s interesting how he add twists and turns to the continuing story such as overcoming the problems of putting charges under the rudders of French ships.
Love this series but the author has introduced too many actors that have limited roles. Can't follow who is whom. Given the large number of locations it would be helpful if Tubes would add some maps. A lot of this book was boring filler.
This series continues to hold interest with its different tactical twists to the Napoleonic War. Historic figures pass through but it is Marty, his wife and cohorts that drive the action asymmetrically within the context of these notable conflicts.
