Vandalar Concubines #3

Turn Left for Stars

Rate this book
A SciFi Alien RomCom.

It’s hard to find the right alien concubine…

Finding three of them? Impossible! Watching the future saikhs practice their penetration angles at the saikhmenti alone doesn’t cut it to make a decision. What about other things like… I don’t know. Personality?

What I need is insider information.
That saikh-in-training who keeps failing his assessments? He’s offering it up freely. Kinda. All he wants is practice those fancy skills on me, or otherwise he might flunk his finals.

Meh, why not?
Don’t accuse me of caring. All I do is let him improve his skills in exchange for dirt on his classmates. I’m technically a martyr, taking one for team Earth here. You’re welcome.

Besides, how bad can he be?
Turns out, not bad at all.

In fact, he’s so good I can’t help but wonder: why do I need three saikhs if this one pleases me so perfectly?

(Wait, I just remembered why! Because I signed a contract stating I would do exactly that. Well... eff me.)

Turn Left for Stars is the third book in this interconnected alien romantic comedy series, featuring alien concubines trained to pleae you. Author note: nope, it's not a reverse harem.

2.5 stars. Not really a fan of this book because of how obvious the solution to the "problem" the heroine was facing was the entire time....but somehow no one saw it until it was almost too late. The drama seemed unnecessarily dragged out.

SWE; plenty of OM drama, heroine considers bringing several OM into her relationship as its part of her contract for living on that planet. She kisses OM, but mostly unwillingly. Hero has to pass a final test were he must "show his skills" by having sex with OW. He doesn't go through with it. Hero considers himself a virgin because he has only ever had sex with the sex tester lady at the school.

The anti reverse harem book.

Honestly, it’s refreshing to see an acknowledgment that polyam isn’t for everyone. It’s a lot of emotional energy, even if it’s a fun fantasy. I took off a star because I don’t think the background on Adrin was very clear. This book probably wouldn’t work well as a stand alone. Lizzy and Adrin had good chemistry and a nice love story.

Spice: 5/5 meaning at least 50% of book is spice

Triggers: none I found

I really love how the series is written. they're all short, sweet, and the point. I finished the first three books in a day because of
that. I love the world that's being created. however, I think this would have been better as a reverse harem.

4.25 stars. Nawwww! Adrin is a saikh-in-training who needs some hands on practice to graduate, and Izzy agrees to let him practice on her in return for Adrin's help in choosing her future saikhs. It's a really fun and sweet story, and I loved seeing them become friends and being all affectionate with each other. The solution to the main problem was obvious from the start, so minor points off for having slightly dumb MCs, but I still loved reading this.

These saikhs are something else, aren't they? Completely devoted to their special lady even when their special lady isn't theirs in the strictest sense of the word. To be fair, while Adrin has the devotion thing down, he has a little ways to go before he becomes anyone's #1 pick. He has some issues to overcome. He's just...a little nervous, a little ham-handed, not quite in the zone to get her where she needs to go.

BUT NO WORRIES! Izzy is willing to let him practice his skills on her while he helps her narrow down the list of men she can choose for her harem. Yeah. No problem, right? Nothing to worry about in the least.

I mean, Izzy definitely isn't going to get attached to the guy showing her a good time day after day, right? And Adrin is NOT going to get possessive AT ALL to the woman who is allowing him to find his way when he was 100% sure he was going to fail. Because saikhs are ABSOLUTELY chosen for what they can bring to the household, not because of other pesky little things like how much they adore their lady friend or how much said lady friend adores him.

RIGHT?

Yeah. These two get physical and their emotions get tangled even though everyone knows that's not done. And it is PERFECT.

This book was good! Not my favorite in the series (book 2 is still the best) but it was a nice read. I wish we had more background for the MMC, plus the ending was kind of rushed. This book easily could’ve been 100 pages longer, just adding more details about Adrin’s career, family finding out his decision, etc. Still a good read, about to move right into the next one about his twin brother.

This MMC was different than the first two in that when we meet him he is still in training to be a saikh, so there are some hiccups during the first few spicy interactions. Interesting change, and I didn’t mind it. Varac from book 2 is still my fave though.

This was SOOOOOO cute and sweet. Also hot. But so adorable and swoony too. This series is definitely worth a read if you're in a sexy alien sort of mood. Do it!

Disclaimer: I received this book as an ARC from the author. This review is happily being given voluntarily.

"Turn Left for Stars" is the third book in the Vandalar Concubines Series by V. K. Ludwig, and the series just keeps getting better and better! First, I love this author's work! It is always fresh, creative, and well written. And Book 3 does not disappoint! It is so cute, sweet, hilariously funny and sizzling hot! Not kidding, panty melting chemistry between the two main characters!

Izzy works for a matchmaking service on the planet Vandalheim, where the men vastly outnumber the women. So much so that women own the greater number of estates and most contract a certain number of males, as saikhs, so they are responsible for their upkeep. Most Vandalar males end up attending school to become saikhs: male concubines. As an alien to this planet, Izzy also had to sign a contract to have at least three saikhs, in order to have her own estate. This sounds perfect to Izzy, who has had a rough life thusfar, and only wants to feel safe, secure, and well cared for. Well, that, and incredible sex.
But Izzy meets Adrin, who seems a fumbling, inept student at saikh school. It looks like he will flunk out, based on what his professors have to say and the evidence of what Izzy has seen. When he feels he needs more practice, and has nothing to lose, Adrin approaches Izzy to see if he can use her as a practice partner. Izzy agrees, and though they have an awkward beginning, she soon finds that there is so much more to Adrin than she could have guessed.

I loved the humor and wit of the characters in this book! I was laughing almost all the way through it, reading some of the funniest parts to my husband, especially when the one professor is describing the female anatomy to her class. Hysterical! I gave this book five stars because I see nothing to improve...unless Ms. Ludwig can crank out the next one this afternoon!

Warning: there is sexual content and some readers may be offended by this, so I recommend it for readers who are 18 or older.

In this book, the author moves away from the heroines literally buying concubines from slavers to take us to the home planet of the heroes from the first two books: a planet overpopulated by men, to the point where there are schools training them to be domestic and good lovers so they have a chance to join a female’s harem.

Izzy has to take 3 saikh’s, per a contract she signed with the government. But when she meets Adrin, who’s almost flunking out of school, she starts to fall for him over sex lessons.

I enjoyed this book more than the previous not because I liked the characters, relationship, or writing better, but just because I didn’t feel icky about the heroes being enslaved.

*There’s a really funny part in the alien’s class on Earth Women 101 where the aliens misunderstand what a clit is and think it’s a tiny penis and it’s… hilarious.

LOVED LOVED LOVED this one. It had a completely different atmosphere than the other two books which made it refreshing. I don’t know if it was the tropes that just worked for me, or if I really liked these characters… but this was a big win.

I think it would be best to start with the first book in the series to understand the world building better (otherwise you might not get the nuances of the underlying threats to the relationship). But the first was also quite good, so I recommend!

I liked this one, really loved the friendship to lovers. But I just wish there would’ve been a scene with Adrin and his family. It was mentioned multiple times that his family will disown him if he accepts a contract with a human but then nothing ever comes of that. I would have liked to see him confront his parents but otherwise I enjoyed this one.

Better than the first for sure, even if I liked Jax more. The couple dinamics was more grounded and their relationship was very cute, with them starting it as just friends (with benefits).

The planet Vandalar has such a shortage of men that women who want to live there who agree to have a relationship with Vandalar men get an estate and a visa.

The heroine is an Earth woman who grew up very poor and loves the idea of having multiple men wanting to fulfill her every wish and giving her half of their earnings.

But she falls in love with the hero and doesn't want multiple men, just him. Her deal with the government does not allow 1 man it has to be more.

Hero met her because he was failing his saikh/be a good husband classes and asked the heroine to help him practice his sex moves.

SPOIELR SPOILER PSOILER

Heroine picks 3 men, the hero, and two gay friends of the hero who are also gay lovers. So the only man who will be with her sexually is the hero. The others just live there and help with the cooking and are heroine's friends.

True Love Wins

I had to give this book 5 stars because I truly enjoyed the book and because it wasn’t a reverse harem. I think the solution at the end of the book was ingenious and everyone got what they wanted. Imaginative world building, an interesting society and colorful characters with some hilarious dialogue made for an enjoyable escape.

He’s a virgin saikh in training who uses her to help him practice for his assessments in the human female body as well as a rising star in the boxing world and she has a contract that requires her to select 3 saikhs but Adrin won’t let other males near her let alone touch and please her.

It was funny, light, quick, and steamy. Yay for alien tails!

A novel where we finally get to peek behind the curtain of Vandalar's infamous male concubine school? Yes, please! This instalment was everything I had hoped it would be: deranged, smutty, funny, sweet.

Readers who weren't a fan of some of the dub-con elements of books 1 and 2 could definitely start the series here. There is only one scene that is borderline dub-con, which I have described at the conclusion of this review for anyone who would like more details prior to reading.

The premise of Turn Left for Stars is that Adrin, a saikh-in-training, is at risk of failing, so he needs to excel in his class on human women in order to pass the course. To achieve this, he makes an arrangement with Izzy to "practice" his lessons on her - and receive feedback.

And yes, these lessons are about female pleasure. *Winks*

What follows is a rather adorable friendship with some... ahem... benefits. But of course, because this is romance, the lines start to get blurred as both Adrin and Izzy develop deeper feelings for one another.

Part of why I enjoyed this book so much was the fact that Adrin and Izzy's friendship was really well done. Aside from Adrin "practicing" on her, they also do things like watch horror movies and cook dinner together. Their romantic love grows from a very genuine place, which was adorable to read. I'm a sucker for a dorky, cinnamon roll MMC's - of which Adrin definitely fits the bill. The smut aspect was also, in my opinion, the hottest so far.

So far, I've read three novels and one novella from the Vandalar Concubines series, and something I appreciate is how the author manages to create a very different story each time. Each character and relationship is distinct from the last - and that's a very underrated skill, in my opinion.

A lot of romance anthology series just recycle the same tropes and relationship dynamic, with the only variation being a slightly different plot and new character names. That's definitely not the case with Ludwig's work. The FMCs each have their own quirks, life goals, and wants from a relationship. Similarly, the alien MMCs range from sweet to jaded to mature to dorky. The smut also unfolds in a very different way, too, and speaks to slightly different kinks in each instalment.

I'll definitely be jumping into book 4 right away!

The writing and editing of the ARC version of the manuscript was clean, with no typos and well constructed sentences. The world building was good in some respects, with the Vandalar culture coming to vivid life but the landscape and wildlife of Vandalar being largely absent from the novel. The characterization was excellent, with hero and heroine being vivid, sympathetic characters with both strengths and weaknesses. The development of the romantic relationship was sweet and star-crossed. The heat level in this romance was about four chili peppers. The pacing flew by, but the plot was only okay. Let me explain.*SPOILER AHEAD* The main driver of conflict in this novel was the fact that the hero and heroine would be unable to stay together because of the heroine having a contract with the government specifying that she had to take at least three concubines or face deportation. This caused a lot of angst for the couple. However, the author makes it really clear near the beginning of the novel that two of the male concubines in the school were a gay couple. In order for me to buy into the angst and anguish the hero and heroine were experiencing, I as the reader needed to not have the knowledge that the couple was gay until much later in this novel, so that I would buy into the anguish of the main couple instead of being seriously irritated by their blindness to the obvious solution to their problem. Near the end of the novel, the heroine asked the gay couple to join her estate, but by that point I as the reader had suffered through 150 or so pages of angst about an easily solved problem. *END SPOILER* This novel had a high level of unjustified angst and very high stakes. I enjoyed the high stakes, but the angst, I did not enjoy much. This novel used the Star-Crossed Lovers trope and the Friends to Lovers trope. The characterization and development of the romantic relationship were both five stars in this novel. The pacing was also five stars. The world building and plot, however, were three stars. I therefore gave this novel a combined rating of four stars. This novel ended on a Happy Ever After ending instead of a cliffhanger, so that was a big plus. I recommend this romance to readers who enjoy plenty of laughs and sweet moments in their sci-fi romances. I look forward to reading the next novel in this series when it releases. I will probably buy myself a keeper copy of this novel.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

My review:
Story 💜💜 - Meh
Darkness - None
Spice 🥵🥵🥵🥵 - Very spicy
Trigger warnings - None
Note: 2 POVs first person, fast pacing, Alien/Human

In this third book, we follow Stephany's business partner, Izzy. Izzy has had enough of her tough life. She started working as soon as she walked in and just wants to relax for the rest of her days. She signs a contract to move to the Vandalar home planet in order to be given an estate and 3 male saikh. She thought this would be perfect until she realized that Stephany was right, and having 3 males is not as dreamy as it sounds. Mostly when Adrin comes into the picture.

Adrin is a saikh in training. He is a champion fighter who got his leg broken. This caused him to lag behind in his saikh training, making him a "bad lover" in the eyes of his teachers. He requests the help of Izzy to not fail the newly added course "Earth woman 101". In exchange, he would give her all the tea about the other saikh so she can pick who would fit her estate. But what started as a simple exchange turns into more.

Now Izzy is faced with a problem: how to not break a contract and get 3 saikh, when she can't be touched by anyone else but Adrin.

I saw from the start what was coming and knew how it would end. So I was a bit disappointed.
The book also has a ton of grammar issues and wrong spelling, not only for words but also for the character names. This turned out to be rather annoying. We were also promised a RH at the end, for a future book, which sadly was never written.

While I loved reading about Izzy and learning more about the saikh training academy, this one was not as great as the previous entry. And I felt the characters were more childish. And the book could have had some more chapters with Izzy dating pov. I felt that one of the side characters was just there to create some tension rather than really helping the story. It felt really out of place.

Adrin is about to flunk out of saikh school, a program that trains Vandalar males to essentially become skilled courtesans so that they'll be asked to join good reverse harems. But if Adrin doesn't get the highest marks in his human female class, it's all over for him. The only viable option left is to go straight to the source for some old-fashioned tutoring. Luckily, there's always one human female lurking nearby. With so many extra males on Vandalar, Izzy has been tasked with recruiting saikhs to go to Earth as part of a matchmaking program. Now if only she could choose which ones she wants for herself.

I can't tell you how many romance books I've read where even if the H has never so much as grazed a woman before, he's got crazy skills in the bedroom. That was so not the case here . . . and I loved it! Adrin was unsure of himself and nervous, but Izzy didn't let their sessions stay awkward for long. They recognized the weirdness of the situation and quickly moved past it so that they could actually have fun together. I think it's also really important to mention that they spent a lot of time doing domestic things and actually getting to know one another on a deeper level. The solution to their biggest issue seemed fairly obvious to me from the beginning, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story in the slightest. The intensity of their relationship never let off steam and I couldn't wait to see how everything finally came together for them.

The ending gave a pretty good indication of the direction that the next book will take. I'll definitely be at the front of the line to get a copy when it's released.

4.5 stars 🌟

I forgot how good and absolutely hilarious this series was? I was already dying of laughter just from the first chapter 😂

This one opens up with Adrin at the saikhmenti—which is basically a school for Vandalar males to learn how to please a female. It goes very in depth with regards to pleasure 😂 but it also goes beyond that. So basically they learn how to fuck, cook, and all around care for a woman. When they graduate they get to become a saikh (i.e., alien concubine). Women can take many saikhs especially since the ratio is skewed—as it always is when it comes to alien romance lol. Anyway humans are being welcomed into this planet with a contract stating that they will take saikhs. This is where it kinda goes downhill for both of our characters.

I got sidetracked but like I said, it opens up with Adrin at the school and how hes failing this human female pleasuring class particularly 😂 Izzy was there scouting the school bc her contract states that she needs to take 3 saikhs in her estate. The Vandalar males are completely put off by human women 😂 Adrin built up some courage to approach her for ‘help’ and thus the spicy sessions began

I loved this sm!! It was so funny and I really liked how Adrin and Izzy’s relationship progressed. This has the friends to lovers trope. That’s a surprise for me since I usually can’t stand that trope in my romance books 😂 Most of the time, they either really bore me or annoy me. The author did it so well with this one tho!!! I honestly needed more and I think at this point I’ve already read the entire series 😭

So so good. Please give this entire series a read. Definitely recommend!!!

This book was such a pleasure to read. The series has been such a fun time and I am excited to read the next book. Adrin is struggling in his training and afraid of failing his courses in pleasing females. You would think training all the different ways to bring pleasure to women would be fun and easy but it isn't for Adrin. After an injury and missing out on courses he is determined to graduate. Learning about human females is weird and difficult so he decides to ask Lizzy for help. Lizzy is contracted to take on three alien concubines. It sounded like a great idea initially but has become much more challenging. When the dorky alien who is close to failing asks for help she isn't so sure. When Adrin agrees to help her find three concubines then they have a deal. Problem is that as Lizzy gets to know Adrin she realizes that she only wants him. Lizzy is such a funny sweetheart. She finds herself in a bit of a rough situation but she eventually figures out a solution. Adrin was definitely a typical alien. He was grossed out by human women but once he started his lessons with Lizzy that changed right away. He was super protective and even though his people usually share he just couldn’t stomach it. I thought the characters were endearing, interesting, and entertaining to read. I’d check this out if you are looking for a fun alien romance with funny banter, virgin MMC, possessiveness, sexy lessons, and a unique ending.

This book can be read as a standalone, but you really, really want to read the whole series. V.K. Has created a world of very hot aliens, that you’ll love and sometimes weep for. Quirky, strong, take no guff females, who of course want someone to see them and love who they are, as do the males. It just takes a bit for them to figure everything out. Which leads to delightful, hysterical, and sometime times sad interactions and very hot, hot scenes. I loved see more of Izzy, seeing her softer side. Adrian and the other males we meet in this book are very entertaining, I know who I’m hoping the next book features. ;) I keep thinking I’ve picked my favorite book in the series, then another comes out and I’m changing my mind. Once again..if you love an entertaining read, one with very sexy alien males who happen to be learning about and loving earth females, no abduction, these women choose their males..these males have very special talents..you want a book you won’t put down, you enjoy very hot activities, plus put you thru a myriad of emotions...then you need to read this series. It’s a keeper and I can’t wait for more. Thank you V.K.
I received this book as an arc, for an honest review.

Oh my goodness!!! I loved this one! Not as much as the first one still but it was still amazing! I really enjoy when series like this have varying males and females and we get a fresh story in the same universe every-time!

So this one featured our precious Liz who was so excited about getting a bunch of Saikhs and the adorable and super sexy sounds Adrin… omg like my kinda man! Liz is super sweet and caring and she knows what she wants! Adrian is very possessive and thoughtful and goofy and I love it!

What I really liked about this one is it kind of flexed on the idea of them being together with others! I’m not going to lie I saw the solution before it was even mentioned in the book but that’s okay because It worked out slightly different than how I thought it would!

I loved seeing Steph back and hearing about her super pregnant belly! And I do really love that we meet every character for the next book in the previous book and they’re heavily featured! It’s like a warmup!

Honestly I’ve already said it - but if you need a good sci-fi romance that makes you laugh, gives you all the feels and leaves you a little hot and bothered definitely check out this series! I can’t believe I’m already wrapping it up with book 4 it was so worth it!

Another great installment in the Vandalar series!

description

We met Izzy in the last book, and this one begins right after she's moved to Vandalar. She spends time at the Saikh school because she needs to chose three of them to join her estate in order to stay on Vandalar. Adrin is a Vandalar fighter working to become a Saikh, but after an injury last year, he's super behind. Due to some hilarious misunderstandings over human female anatomy, the scholars stay clear of Izzy, but Adrin is so determined to pass that he approaches her to see if he can practice his techniques on her in exchange for helping her pick good guys for her estate.

I really loved Izzy and Adrin. They were such a cute couple with lots of great banter.

The only thing I was a little disappointed in was the ending. What I loved about Adrin in the beginning was his happy, sweet attitude, but he feels quite different in the last few chapters. It seems quite obvious how they can solve the three-Saikh problem, so it seemed odd that he just gave up and didn't really try to come up with anything himself.

Overall, I think this was probably the funniest book in the series so far, and I liked getting some time on another planet in the universe the author has created. I loved Odrin in here, so can't wait to get to his book, too!

I enjoyed this book much more than I did the second in the series (Never Cuff an Alien) because there really wasn't a slavery aspect to it. But two things bothered me about the book.

1) The solution was SO FREAKING OBVIOUS FOR SO LONG. Don't get me wrong, I love angst, but I felt like a lot of it, especially towards the end, was unnecessary angst.

2) That ending?
