This is book six of the Kitten Witch Cozy Mystery series and it is just a week until witch Ember McNair gets married to her wolf shifter fiancé and Sheriff Cedric Jamieson. The best gift she could have received for her wedding is the presence and existence of her older sister Ash, who made a mistake some seventeen years ago. Ash had tried to make sure her sneaking out to visit a dark witch coven was wiped from her family’s memories, but the spell she was given from a dark witch and supposed friend at the time, Cassandra, went drastically wrong, and she ended up wiping all memory of her existence from her family’s memory. It has taken her a long time to figure out how to correct this error and not be dragged into the dark coven because of her mistake. Now Ember finally has her missing memories back, but she doesn’t know her sister very well, as such a long time has gone past. She need to learn all about who she is now and what sort of person she really is.
What doesn’t help is that so close to her wedding, Cedric is called away to a case, which she ends up helping with. A dark witch called Cassandra, who is seems no one has a good word about, has committed suicide, or so it seems at first glance. The more Ember and Cedric investigate, the more the evidence points to murder. When Ember finds that her own sister may have visited the victim the day she was killed and has some very good reasons and possibly even the equipment to have killed her, she becomes Cedric’s number one suspect and Ember has to figure out if she truly knows her sister anymore, or can even trust her. She has the aid of her cat familiar Kali and her best friends, to keep her on track and not forget to do all the last minute preparations for her wedding, as well as try to get to know her long lost sister and find a killer!
Cassandra left behind a husband Tom and step daughter Alice, who was the product of Tom’s first marriage to a rat shifter, Rose. Neither Tom nor his first wife can tell you why they split and got divorced in the first place, so it seems a bit of magic may have been involved, by a witch who wanted what wasn’t available to her! Cassandra pushed to get everything she wanted, no matter who was in the way. She kept a binder full of hate letters, that she loved to read through and got a sick thrill from it. She had a lot of enemies and lots of people are glad she is dead and comment they would have killed her if she hadn’t turned up dead already! But to add a twist, it seems someone was trying to kill her with rat poison as well as strangle her, before she was hung. Only problem now, is that Cassandra wasn’t happy to be dead and has some unfinished business to take care of and will try to take an innocent and use dark magic to do so! Ember and her friends will need to stop her, but also make sure that Ember gets to her wedding on time!
An easy to read book, which if you have missed a couple of the previous books, it doesn’t really matter, as you can pick it up from the story as you go. Good to see Ember get both her long lost sister and her memories back, but also to get to her wedding to her soulmate Cedric on time and in one piece. An interesting investigation, with so many different possible paths to follow and the addition of a happy ending to a long separated family and also a wedding. Can’t get better than that.
