Shadow Academy has many secrets and maybe I’m the worst possible one. When I saved Ren Worthington’s life and stopped the school dance from turning into a vampire buffet, I didn’t expect a medal, I didn’t expect kudos but I sure as heck didn’t expect to become public enemy #1 either. And, after sharing my first kiss with Ren, I’m not sure of his feelings. I don’t think he’s sure himself. If that isn’t enough, a couple of weirdos kidnap Ren and I, wanting to experiment to test the extent of our powers. Those experiments include putting us in dangerous situations until we no longer know what’s real or not. If the prophecy is true, and I am the chosen one, I need to get this mess sorted out as soon as possible, or we’ll both die.
Prophecy Girl is a young adult urban fantasy with slow burn, one true love romance
I’m a digital nomad (well I was until 2020 happened), although I hate that term because it makes me sound like a wanky hipster. Which I’m not. Okay, I am a bit snobby about coffee and I sometimes wear twee vintage dresses but that doesn’t make me a hipster.
On my travels, I love visiting weird and macabre places. Mummified hands that remove curses, museums of infectious diseases, collections of taxidermized frogs riding Penny Farthings - hell yeah!
Oh, and that profile photo isn't me, it's my rapscallion Bishon Frise called Hamish. Both of us highly motivated by treats.
I am enjoying this series of paranormal teens, where our MC Cherry is still learning just what powers she has and how to control them. A couple of unexpected twists along the way helps keep it interesting. On to the third book in this series now.
I want to like this book because I think it has potential. Even Ren being a useless punk didn't detract too much. There is some charm to having such an inept love interest. But things just got too inconsistent and weird. A lot of plot elements didn't tie together, or at least didn't get explained adequately to feel necessary. I did not understand the character's motivation. (For example, so much reliance on Cherry not wanting to kill even wild animals. But why?) And the ending cliff-hanger felt weirdly...not important in light of everything else? Despite these things, the story was engaging enough that I would seek more. But the increasingly glaring grammar mistakes as the book progressed leave me disinclined to pay for another one.
I love the concept behind Kat Cotton’s Shadow Academy series, a bunch of half-blood kids (and other “freaks”), half-fae, witch, half-shifter, half-demon, etc., given scholarships to an elite school in return for protecting the full pay, rich brat, students from paranormal dangers. In its first book, Scholarship Girl, we met one of these scholarship girls, Cherry Love, and saw her really develop so much that by the end she pretty much saves everyone - including big-man-in-campus rich kid (and potentially so much more) Rent Worthington from a school version vampire apocalypse. Now in Prophecy Girl (Book 2) the gang is back. Things are not going to get any easy for Cherry here, but she will definitely mature and grow in her abilities (and, yes, it’s fun to watch Ren too). Overall this is a wonderfully satisfying tale and definitely a worthy followup to book 1 - and highly recommended.
In the second installment, Cherry is being ostracized by the other students. Enemies seem “friendlier”, she will be asked to accommodate certain instructions for someone else that gives her a massive upgrade in life. When things occur that make them targets for someone very close to her ward, more questions arise and a shocker as to who is behind everything and what plans this person developed for the two teens! Cherry will have to do things she never thought about before and it will leave a definite impact…but what kind? Good or bad? I received this as an ARC and am leaving a voluntary review.
The second book in the series kept me reading till the end of story. Really wish the next book was ready because I want to know which way the story is headed and the directions the friendship are going.
Book two is causing all types of upheaval among the characters and you will want to know the secrets of the past and present.
My scoring for this one is complicated. So I’ve popped it at 4 ⭐️ …but honestly I’m floating between saying 3 and 4 ⭐️ …
I hate to start off my review listing the things that have made me float around with my scoring but…let’s get it out the way…
Soo my reasons for this struggle, is that whilst I really am enjoying the story plot, it’s development, the levels of my intrigue and there’s also really great spacing out of everything… but there’s something about most of the characters that I’m just not connecting to. Whilst they did initially have potential for me, there’s a slight lacking of depth…and sometimes quite frankly they simply just annoy me 🙈. It’s just that sometimes they seem to be quite childish and that does make it harder to connect to them, for me. Don’t get me wrong, the characters aren’t badly written…they even amuse me and I have moments of seeing that extra something… but I find that I kinda want to just growl at them and say “seriously?!” A lot of the time lol…The one other thing, I think, that’s bugging me is the main characters relationship with the guy…it’s just hella confusing. I know it’s a slow-burn romance but for me it’s not up there with other slow-burns I’ve read. It just seems a bit of a fickle one, in my opinion. Like I’m not really that super attached to it/invested, If that makes sense?
I dunno if that helps clear up why I’m having a hard time as to how to rate these books 🤷🏻♀️😅. Or did you just end up being more like this? 😆🧐
But now let’s move on from that…because I am totally enjoying the story and there’s no doubt that I will definitely be finishing this series! I’m super curious to see how it all turns out. All the who’s, what’s, where’s and when’s. I’m there for it all lol. I need that information for suresies. I do have to say there’s very fascinating things at play and little nuggets being dropped here and there and I’m trying to piece it together with what we’ve been told already. I’m definitely enjoying that aspect of it. So all in all it’s still a thumbs up for me. 😊
If you love your Urban Fantasy, paranormal books in an academy setting…that feature all the different supernatural beings say like: Vampires, Deities, Werewolves, Fae, Demons etc…I have a feeling you will enjoy this world created.
I feel this series has so much potential, but there is much left to be desired in the deliverance. Don’t get me wrong, Cherry is still an incredibly strong and sarcastic character to follow, but the world building kinda crumbled in this one; events happened that aren’t really explained and didn’t make sense, things were rushed and there were a lot of grammatical and spelling errors in this one. I still enjoyed it, but it definitely needed more explanation and exploration on certain events, as it just leaves the reader trying to fill in the blanks with no information in which to do so.
Lucas was a brilliant character and friend in the first book, but in this one he deteriorated into an arse just for the sake of it it seems. He’s reasons for being upset and angry with Cherry didn’t really add up in the grand scheme of things, but nor did much else to be honest 😅 I felt the author really skipped over important events in this one, which was a massive shame
This Young Adult fantasy has a few of everything: bullies, witches, faes, werewolves, demons, etc. Vengeful vampires seek to kill Ren - Cherry, the scholarship kids, protect him.
Book 1, Cherry wants to be a loner but is thrown into a situation where she needs to mentor Ren, a rich spoiled brat. The scholarship kids, which she is a member of, wads off attacks on the academy.
It's a fast-paced first book in a series that left enough holes in the story for a reader to want to read Book 2. I hit the wrong button and got Book 2 free, so I read on after a break.
Book 2 read lost me about three-quarters of the way through. Cherry and Ren are abducted after becoming friendly with each other. This led to an ending that a young adult would want to continue.
Other than some mis-spellings and grammatical errors, Ms. Cotton's writing engages with paranormal events and little magic.
Fun, but not my cup of tea. I am an Old Adult. However, Young Adults should enjoy this fantasy.
Book 2 is better than book 1. You get more in-depth with the characters. You find out more about what’s going on. You get to meet a new character for some of the story. Cherry and Ren are taken. They are being forced to part of an experiment. The experiment is on their powers. They escaped. The team is trying to figure out what is going on. Then they are back at the place where the experiments are happening. I did not see who was behind the experiments coming. It was a nice plot twist. Will Cherry and Ren put a stop to who is behind the experiments? Will they learn anything more about their powers?
Book 2 was a bit confusing. Most of the time, Ren and cherry are trapped in a strange place by two minions who experiment on them and their powers. It's all a bit surreal and planless. At least we get to know in the end who is behind it and why. I still don't know if I like Mr. Norton (imagining a Rupert Giles from Buffy) or if he has other darker ultimate motifs (I have trust issues, too). At least there are less grammar and spelling errors but I hope book 3 has a bit more structure and my favourite Wolfi is getting cute again. Also, i'd love to see Britney back with flower power please!
It was a good read but frankly it lost me about three quarters of the way through. Why can she call up the spirit vampires? Were her parents deliberately? What was the reason why their power was wanted for harvesting? Yes it was action packed but the action just didn't flow from event to event. It seemed to assume that you (the reader) knew more than was actually written down. Am slightly disappointed and fed up now and won't be reading any more.
3 a bit more but not with .5 so rather 3ish I was swapped into book one. This was much slower with a lot of struggles and failures which made it more dark. While the first seemed showing slowly getting positive this was rather dark and one bad thing coming after the other. Still like the world built the academy style the story line but all those going downs didnt really make it to my liking. Still Ill do book3 as next… seeing 3 more after this?! Yikes… not sure… but let me see after B3…
What a roller coaster of a book! This story rockets along with lots of action and loads of interesting new developments. I’m leaving out any spoilers because you really need to grab a copy and read it ASAP! Suffice it to say, this is a terrific second in the series.
It was my pleasure to receive this ARC and give my honest review.
The second book in the series kept me reading till the end of story. Really wish the next book was ready because I want to know which way the story is headed and the directions the friendship are going.
Book two is causing all types of upheaval among the characters and you will want to know the secrets of the past and present.
The story really went in a different direction than I expected. There are lots of twists and surprises in terms of the characters and their actions. It definitely will keep you guessing.
school slumped me again so it took me a bit to finish this book but yay I love this series so much ren and cherry are my baby's so much happened at the end it was like my jaw was droping every 5 seconds
slightly underwhelming compared to the first book, nothing necessarily grabbing my attention and it felt like a filler book rather than something that could be read alone and be satisfactory
