April 16, 2022Besties: Work it Out is a great graphic novel for middle grade readers. Beth and Chanda are best friends who aspire to earn money and have a lot of adventures on the way to reaching their goal. There is humor in the story, as well as a lot of heart! I appreciated the diversity of characters in the story presented in a very natural way. Highly recommended for upper elementary and middle school readers – and adults like myself who enjoy graphic novels for all ages! – Diana F.

Kayla Miller has worked out a good formula in her Click series of middle schoolers dealing with low-key middle school issues in a cute and reasonable way, and now she is able to successfully apply it to this spin off with a co-author and new artist. Best friends Beth Wagner and Chanda Basu are doing odd jobs to earn some cash, but have to work out some issues regarding responsibility and honesty when they mess up at one of the jobs. Nicely done.

Besties: Work It Out is a sweet, realistic graphic novel about friendship, starting a business, animals, and family relationships. Filled with the perfect balance of school drama, this graphic novel provides a look at the effects of peer pressure, the effort needed to correct a mistake, and the importance of loving older siblings. I would totally recommend it!

I read it bc i was bored in sora and tbh i dont know their names but the tall one was annoying. She was always talking abt how she acts like a teen but shes the complete opposite. Anyways the blonde one was ok and i guess they learned their lesson but still i get that there supposed to be dumb teens but I personally would never act that way especially if im doing work for somebody

Me ha gustado la historia, que aunque es juvenil, es fresca e interesante. La veo ideal para adolescentes, porque nos habla sobre las primeras responsabilidades, hacerse cargo de resolver los problemas que se nos presenten y sobre todo tiene un mensaje bonito sobre la amistad y la sinceridad.
Sin dudarlo os lo recomiendo, Bea y Laura se ganan tu corazón, y si, te sientes un poco identificada con ellas ¿Quién en su adolescencia no quería sentirse como adulto? A mí me ha recordado alguna situación similar que viví.

GAHHHH tried to enjoy this one but just cant :') love the art tho but not quite a fan of the typeface used - might probably need some time to get used to it. idk if reading the "click" series first might be a better start, will try to explore them when theres a chance.

This middle grade graphic novel is about two best friends, Beth and Chanda, who are searching for ways to make money. Beth, whose family doesn't seem to have much money, wants to buy something special for her mother's birthday. Chandra, whose parents are always comparing her to her genius older sister, wants to work so she can show her parents that she is responsible enough to own a pet.
When Beth's sister has a previous commitment, she offers them a golden and profitable opportunity - to dog/house sit for the wealthy Ms. Langford. The girls are so taken with the mansion and all of Ms. Langford's fancy things, that they start bragging about it at school. This catches the attention of the popular kids and suddenly they find themselves in over their heads. When things start to go wrong, Beth and Chanda must find a way to repair what was damaged - and that includes their friendship!
This book is a spin-off of the Click series. Beth and Chanda are in the same grade and go to the same school as Olive and her friends. It was fun to see appearances by Olive and company throughout the book. I enjoyed this book and I think kids will too. It has good messages, like being honesty and that hard work pays off, that I think kids will benefit from reading. I can't wait for the next book in the series!

This was gold! Besties: Work It Out impressed me with its themes and thoughtful characters. I loved seeing a kid acknowledge how hard her mom is working and wanting to take care of her.
The story showed perfectly the deeper awareness you get as a kid when you realize the weight of adult responsibilities and MONEY. Some of us discover it earlier depending on our circumstances, but the conclusion is usually the same.
Chanda and Beth were so much fun together. They were chaotic and quirky but loved each other. The artwork was better than ever. The lines were sleeker (I see you Clip Studio Paint), and the color direction was phenomenal.
Something I loved was the spin on “lying, and I hope they don’t find out.” Ending spoiler:

I would like to thank edelweiss and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. I was already a fan of Kayla Miller's Click series so I was excited to read this one. I love the art work, it is so bright, colourful and eye catching. Follow Chanda and Beth on their many fun filled adventures as they try to earn some money. This book has a solid female friendship, animals, fashion, social media, and always trying to do the right thing, what more could you want! Looking forward to the next one.

Ok, I love Kayla Miller's Click series. When I found out Kayla was creating a new series that follows characters in Olive's friend circle, I knew I wanted to read them. This book was a solid debut for a new series that I am definitely going to continue reading as they release. I enjoyed getting to know Beth and Chanda. These two are peripheral characters in Olive's world, but I definitely recognized them. In this stories, Beth and Chanda are looking for some ways to raise money. Beth wants some extra money to get her mom an awesome birthday gift and Chanda wants to impress her parents without being compared to her older sister. When the pair lands a dog sitting gig, they are ready to impress Ms. Langford and their parents with their responsibility. When Nat (remember her from Clash?) demands to be invited over to the house, Beth and Chanda are quick to agree as they want to earn the approval of Nat. Unfortunately, when Nat is at the house, an expensive lamp gets broken. Beth and Chanda have to figure out what they want to do: hustle and earn some extra money to replace the lamp or come clean to Ms. Langford?
This was such an enjoyable little graphic novel from Kayla Miller. With this new story, Miller has solidified herself as an auto-read graphic novel artist for me. While her books are definitely designed for upper elementary and middle school readers, I can definitely appreciate how the characters are facing some very real challenges in their lives. I also really like the diversity in Miller's books. I would love to see these characters deal with more complex topics/situations as they continue to grow and mature. I am excited to add this book to my classroom library collection so it can be enjoyed by even more readers.

WHAT a delight! ‘Besties’ brings me back to my tween days, and all the sleepovers and shenanigans my best friend and I would get into (although, we were not nearly as stylish as Beth and Chanda).
A heartwarming story about friendship and what happens when friends don’t quite see eye to eye. You’ll want to root for our dear Besties while they learn a lesson or two about growing up, being responsible, and doing the right thing.
Absolutely charming with its eye-catching illustrations, humorous dialogue, and even a FASHION MONTAGE.

Okay, this was too cute! I absolutely love the art style for this series. It's much more expressive and elaborate. And the humor was priceless, down to the facial expressions of characters! It has a very different vibe from the Click series, but I love that it's different. Also, it's fun getting to know other characters from the Click series that we've seen, but don't really know much about. If you like Cupcake Diaries or even My Little Pony, you'd love this start of a new series!

I really enjoyed this graphic novel. It had an interesting yet realistic story. It showed tweens trying to figure out how to deal with more responsibility. Things were wrapped up a little too nicely at the end but it's kind of expected. I think my students will enjoy this book.

This book caught my eye because there 2 best friends and they work together in everything. The part is didnt like was the arguments between them. It also taught me that not all of your friends are going to think the same. Everyone has there own opinions.

"Besties: Work It Out" is the debut novel in the "Click" spin-off series. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and the challenges and obstacles the two main characters faced seemed authentic. The "life lessons"/takeaways were interwoven without being too "preachy," and tween readers will likely find moments that mirror their own lives. The story in and of itself would be worthy of at least 4 stars, but the artwork and typeface weren't what I've come to expect. This series was a collaborative effort involving two other artists, and their work just wasn't as "clean" and vibrant as Miller's original "Click" series. The typeface includes odd-shaped characters, particularly the letter "a," which initially was disorienting. (After 3o or so pages, however, it wasn't as distracting.) Overall, "Besties" is a nice "read-alike" for readers who have enjoyed Miller's initial works.

Besties is about Beth and Chandra, best friends who have financial goals. Beth wants to save up money to give her mother a spa day, and Chandra really wants to adopt a cat. When they get the gig of a lifetime--house sitting for a neighbor--they jump right in. But trouble occurs, and soon the girls scramble to fix their mess.
I loved their friendship and thought this story was so fun and full of great lessons. I am really excited to see where the series goes!

This is a short middle grade graphic novel about friendships, responsibilities, owning up to mistakes, and earning your own money as a preteen. I've read Miller's 'Click' series so I wanted to give this a try. It was cute. I don't think I liked it as much as the books with Olive as the MC but the story was sweet and I loved the artwork. It didn't have a lot of depth but I liked the cameos from the kids in the other books and the realistic way the girls handled being given a big job and screwing up.
