There's not much I can say about the Sandman, it is as good as people say, and there's quite a bunch of amazing short stories in this volume, but the art pissed me off sometimes, way too sketchy.

My very first graphic novel, yay! Truly impressed at the art work, the characters and the variety of stories. My reader-relationship with Gaiman isn´t the best, so I tried the tv-show first and got very into it, I had to read the source material. I do not regret and I'm ready to continue.

Recomendada.

First time re-reading the series in about 20 years or so. Turns out it’s still absolutely brilliant. And despite having read these stories at least a dozen times before, I’m still noticing things for the first time.

I think this would have been more my kind of thing a couple of decades ago. It definitely has moments of greatness, and some really captivating characters. Sometimes it's too creepy, sometimes it's too meandering. I think I will keep reading the series for now.

I'd allways felt it was a gross mistake on my part to not have read The Sandman. As a reader who enjoyed comic books, and whose favorite title is Hellblazer, published by the DC comics imprint Vertigo, it should stand to reason that I should make of Sandman an obligatory read. Heck, Constantine even shows up in a few issues. Between that, and the constant heap of praise Sandman has allways received, i SHould have ran to get it!

But somehow, I was under the misleading impression that The Sandman was a pseudo-philosophical bore for goths by the way people talked about it, and ashtetic. Well, having rwad it now, I can see how grossly mistaken I was!

I'd describe this book as a literate, erudite, teansportive and wildly imaginitive approach to both fantasy and horror, whose text and artwork are stunningly realized. Its as literary as comic books can get.
In its early issues, the story seems to be somewhat scaterred and directionless (much like dreams are wont to be). But as the story progresses, it begins to cohalesce into a very meaningfull whole, and its early episodic nature serves a larger, interconnected plot. Its quite brilliantly structured.

I do get the feeling that the early issues's episodic nature came from Gaiman being kind of uncertain as to what he meant to do with this world he created, and was very much still figuring out what direcion to take. But Gaiman, being the fertile creative force he is, ended up weaving its dispersed elements into a cohesive whole, and creating a fully fleshed-out, wonderfully realised dream world that often leaks and directs the waking world. Beauty, sorrow, sometimes both simultaneously abound, and its stories are a very revealing and thoughtfull meditation on what it means to be human, in all its its different aspects - our relations with deities and the unknown, as well the known world, our sexuality, grief, hapiness, sacrifice, fear, love, desire, despair, madness - all of humanity's rich spectrum of emotions.

Now, be warned. For all the beauty this book contains, it also has a great deal of grotesque and disturbing horror. Its fantasy/horror, with an emphasis on horror. While not graphically depicted, there is a good deal of mentions of sexual abuse and violence throughout, including towards minors. It's hard to stomach at times, and i can't recommend it to people who may feel disturbed or triguerred by such themes. They are quite prevalent here.
As for the non sexual physical violence, that kind is very graphically depicted.

The artwork is sublime as well. Sam Kieth, Mike Dringenberg and Malcolm Jones III do the artwork, and they perfectlly realize Gaiman's vision.

The weakest part of this volume is Sandman Mystery Theatre, by Matt Wagner.
Its got a very good, pulpy concept and artwork, but its too self-satisfied with itself, losing itself in redundant and repetitive dialogue.
For example, often full pages are made up of just background conversation that, while well rendered, do not serve the plot in the slightest. I imagine its meant to convey the feelings of being in a crowded room, while at the same time setting up the time frame in which the story takes place. However, an issue of Sandman conveys the same feeling and sense of time and place, with more clarity in three or four dialogue baloons than it takes a full page or two for Wagner to do so.

There is a very good story and asthetic hidden behind these Wagner pages. If it was 10 pages shorter, it could have been a very good story, but its smothered and rendered dull by its excessive, meandering length. But its a minor lower point in an otherwise very strong volume, and thankfully its right at the end of it, and can eaasily be skipped, as it barely affects the plot of Sandman proper.

In short, if you want to read an extremely literate, brilliantly crafted comic that has depth and is not mere escapism, The Sandman is bound to satisfy, provided the reader is not easily disturbed by violence, mentions of sexual, pshychological and physical abuse or heavy themes in general.

"Preludes & Nocturnes" is a pretty surprising combination of horror & super-heroes that really differs from what follows. However, it's nonetheless really good storytelling with a few sublime moments, such as the battle with the demon and 24 hours [9/10]. "The Sound of Her Wings" is still brilliant [10+/10]. "Tales in the Sand" is very innovative for its decision to tell tales of Morpheus in the past, where he's often just a secondary character. Beyond that, it's just a good story [8/10]. "The Doll's House" does a good job of merging almost standalone stories into a cohesive whole and also starts to open up the universe of the Sandman beyond its horror beginnings [9/10]. "Sandman Midnight Theatre" is a fun crossover with the excellent Sandman Mystery Theatre comic. This issue gives some nice background to Dream's imprisonment but is generally more relevant to the other comic [8/10].

Happy to have these Deluxe editions, because they're finally a premium Sandman that's _readable_. (The Absolutes were gorgeous but way too big to read!)

Ever since I finished season 2 of The Sandman series on Netflix I have not been able to stop thinking about this world and the characters in it, so of course I had to go pick it up. Am I a sucker in terms of getting the deluxe edition? Most likely — I just cannot let them go.

The art of the comics is amazing and has provided me with so much inspiration that I've lacked in the few months I've been without an art community. I am in love with the character design and the composition of some of the panels - especially how, at one point, they make you physically turn the book sideways to read the words and (if you get so into it as I did) you don't even notice you're doing it. The art infiltrates the subconscious and I love it. I can't stop thinking about these characters, especially Dream himself, and how much humanity is poured into these storylines and how many amazing lessons you can get out of them. There's so much inspiration flowing through each page, each panel, each word. I am so glad that I found this world, it it seems to be calling out to me at a time where I need it.

Why did I wait this LOOONG to read this?
Some people watch DIE HARD during Christmas. I think my 12 days of Christmas is reading volumes of Sandman. And just as what Gaiman mentioned, Dream is his reflection. It’s a Gaiman kind of MONTH!

Im not sure how many volumes there are in Book 1 but I can’t wait for the next ones! My favourite is the Sandman Midnight Theatre and Sounds of her Wings (with Death, Dream’s sister). I honestly don’t find it as overly dark as other lit I’ve read this month.

There are some volumes I can’t seem to decipher the underlying philosophy/message esp John Dee. I think I should reread and let it sit for awhile. 😆

Neil Gaiman's The Sandman is a different kind of unique that isn't really about superheroes, but a world-creating that has never been done before. While it maybe to some feel the telling of a tale is confused and hard to understand, its literally well written that creates a whole new universe unlike ever read before.

For this deluxe edition, collecting stories from Preludes and Nocturnes and The Doll's House, this is a fine edition. Including this edition is never before collected story Sandman Midnight Theatre in any Sandman's collected editions.

Graphically beautiful, and so much fun to read. I marvelled at the quality of story telling in graphical form! Stand alone chapters give us a deeper understanding of this particular universe - a universe of the subconscious mind. Gaimans portrayal of the archetypal mind os the first time I could digest this subject to mean anything for me. In addition to this, I adored the Britishisms and crafty quirks of dialect, typical to the historical context 1939-1989. Now onto read the next edition of Sandman and the American God's graphic novel anthology (2001) woo!!!
