The Rising Wave #1

The Turncoat King

Rate this book
A thirst for revenge . . . Ava is committed to vengeance against the man responsible for the death of her parents. The same man, the Queen's Herald, kept her prisoner for two years, until she escaped with Luc, a warlord bent on vengeance just as fierce as her own. He's forged a powerful army of people from all through the region, called the Rising Wave, to march on the Kassian royal family and smash its corrupt power under the weight of their anger. But for Luc, just as for Ava, his true motive is a lot more personal.

A hidden magic . . . Luc suspects Ava has magical abilities, suspects he's benefited greatly from them, but he's no stranger to the burdens of power, and he's prepared to let her tell him in her own time-after all, she's his heart's choice and he will give her all the time she needs. Except time is running out for both of them. As they near the Kassian stronghold, forces from within their own camp and without will use every trick they have to stop both Luc and Ava and tear them apart.

A secret laid bare . . . Luc knows Ava has a secret she's keeping from him-but what he doesn't realize is she has many. And when those secrets are exposed, everyone will have to grapple with the consequences. Ava is prepared to sacrifice her happiness and even her life to save the Rising Wave and Luc-but she would prefer to use her heart and her head to outwit her enemies instead.

MY FIRST 5 STAR BOOK OF 2021 🥂 - WOOHOO what a start!

UPDATED: REREAD 2021, didn't even last a year before I had to re-read it, and the second time was as good as the first one. Can't wait to read the sequel.

___________________________________

OMG it's already SO GOOD!!!!

I have only 40% left and it's already a favorite book of 2021.

To all my romance fantasy peeps - you must read this book!!! Also if possible start with the novella The Turncoat King it's the beginning of the couple's relationship and the story of how they met. I would highly recommend to start with the novella.

Both book and novella are available with KU.

Also for all of you who enjoyed Warprize - you'll love this one :D

This was like a combination of Warprize and Pathfinder's Way, only it wasn’t better than either of those. For one thing you *have* to read the prequel The Rising Wave, because otherwise this book will not make sense. Why the author didn’t just include it at the beginning of this book, I don’t know. And honestly that prequel (which really acts as the first several chapters of this book) is the best part of this whole story. I will say the way the heroine is specifically able to work magic was interesting and new, but it worked a little too well putting her solidly in Mary Sue territory.

But comparing this book to Warprize, I thought the plot of this book was more interesting but it wasn’t as well written. Comparing this to Pathfinder’s Way, this seemed like a watered down version of that book, and I’d recommend you read that one instead.

I’m sad I didn’t enjoy this as much because I really liked Dark Horse by this author. So I’ll give this author another try but won’t continue on with this series.

I've read all of Michelle Diener's Sci-Fi books and I'm just as happy to be reading one of her fantasies.

*NOTE* Be sure to read Novella 0.5 The Rising Wave before reading book 1**

I grew to love these characters in the prequel Novella, and they are just as amazing in this book. The romance was great, the bad guys posed a real threat, and the friendships were sweet. I also like the magic system of spell-casting the h does with her embroidery. I've never read a book with this particular type of magic, but it works very well.

This is book 1 of a trilogy, I hope that the story can keep up the pace over 3 books. I'm ready for the next one.

The story is interesting and the heroine’s magic is unusual, never read such things before 😻😘
However, you need to read the novella first, if not the storyline will make you a bit confused.
Not sure if I wanted to read book #2 immediately, the H/h separated most of the book and still no sign when book #3 will be publish.

But I definitely will continue this series 😘.

I'm a little torn about my feelings about The Turncoat King by Michelle Diener. I liked it but not so much that I could give it a higher rating than three stars. A three star rating definitely isn't bad but of course when you read a new book by a favorite author you always wish it will be higher than that.

I'm going to start with the things that I liked about this book. First of all Ava as a heroine. I always enjoy reading about the heroines that the author creates and with Ava it was just the same. She was super badass and I totally loved her unique magical ability.

Second, Ava's relationship with Luc. I just loved it. Their romance definitely didn't came without its challenges but I've been rooting for them since the start. This wasn't a super heavy romantic book but I just couldn't get enough about reading their personal moments together.

Now for the things that I liked less about the book. I feel like I was more invested in Ava and Luc as characters and their relationship than anything else that was going on in the book. Not that those things weren't interesting to read about as well but it all just didn't capture my attention as much.

Overall, The Turncoat King by Michelle Diener had both its postives and negatives. I do want to read the second book because I love the author and I want to see what else is going to happen with the characters and this world.

*The Rising Wave series starts with the novella entitled THE RISING WAVE. Readers can find it in Warlords, Witches & Wolves: A Fantasy Realms Anthology until March, thereafter it will be available as a standalone novella.*

A lovely story, and I will probably keep reading this series. But like all books of hers I read it’s both pleasant and at the same time somewhat weak.
There’s always love at first sight, a Teflon heroine, an un gripping story.
Here there are a few other nits:
-a MarySue heroine, who was never taught magic but who literally doesn’t stitch a single wrong thread (and everyone loves)
- a corpse that becomes a skeleton in a year and half (don’t ask me why, buy it really bugged me)
- you don’t kill the goose that lies the golden eggs. Her mother’s death was a huge plot hole
-a villain that was both cardboard and monochromatic.

I loved the characters in the prequel but I felt like the hero and heroine felt one dimensional in this book. The plot got a bit repetitive but it finally picked up towards the end.
I personally loved the MCs and I hope the sequels make their characters more fleshed out, I love them as a couple, they both are very supportive of each other and you cannot deny that they love each other.

I was really craving some fantasy romance and while THE TURNCOAT KING was an interesting read there were a few things that kept my rating lower. On the good side I love the way magic is incorporated into the story via sewing and embroidery and this is a very unique idea. I also liked both Ava and Luc as characters and they were really cute together. They start the story out already in love and they support each other 100% throughout the book. The worldbuilding was also pretty interesting and I found it very easy to understand the different realms and the war that was going on.

But a few things got in the way of making this a better book. The biggest reason is that there’s no tension in the story, not in Ava and Luc’s relationship and not really even with the war. Our MCs are completely solid and there’s never any worry that they’ll turn on each other or not trust each other. Everything Ava needs to do with her magic is accomplished with no limitations or struggles. She can even identify any of her enemies because of her spelled cloak which warns her when she’s in danger. Nothing is ever a challenge for our characters and this made the story kind of boring. Additionally, while I loved how in love Ava and Luc are, we never actually understand why they love each other, they just do. What is it about each of them that the other one loves? We just don’t know. Even having read the prequel novella where they fall in love in the span of three days, I still don’t know ~why~ because we’re just told they do and it’s never questioned again.

The Turncoat King was a flipping fantastic read!! And this cover is gorgeous! Totally embodies Ava and Luc:)

Picking up where Ava and Luc’s novella The Rising Wave (found in the Warlords, Witches and Wolves: A Fantasy Realms Anthology) leaves off, this book was a page turner from beginning to end! I loved so much about this book-Ava’s magic spells were a wild ability that came in handy more than once. I loved Luc’s loyalty and leadership and enjoyed their relationship dynamics and how support he was of Ava even when he didn’t know all her secrets. The supporting cast of characters were just as fascinating and I hope to see them again. Also, Ava’s revenge?! Her plan actually had me smiling because the twist never occurred to me and was very, very well played.

I found myself reading this one at work during downtime and am ridiculously excited for the next book!! Congrats to Michelle for penning a fab read!

4.5 stars!

Ave is a fabulous heroine, strong, intelligent, and capable. Her magical abilities are incredibly unique, and also a bit terrifying, especially since she doesn't really understand the strength of her own powers. Luc is one of those rare, quietly confident warlords/alpha males that knows what his heart wants. The building of trust between Ava and Luc was perfection.

I want you to hear my heart’s song. I want you to understand you never have to fear me. I have only ever worked magic for your benefit.

Their feelings for each other began in The Rising Wave and deepened in this story. I wished there was a bit more steam (there were a lot of fade to black moments) but my romantic heart was still happy.

3.5/5.0

Not nearly as strong as other books I have read from this talented author. There is SO much promise for a riveting story, yet it tends to stay strictly on the surface with no meat underneath. This is especially true - and especially frustrating - in the romance aspect. Ava and Luc escaped from prison, had sex and fell hopelessly in love within 24 hours of meeting. (This happens, however, in the prequel novella to this book).

So… Everything in this entire story is based on Ava and Luc’s undying love for each other. But there is NO FOUNDATION FOR THAT PREMISE! And because there is absolutely no foundation for that love, it is never completely believable. I hate that because it could be such an amazing read if we had just been allowed some depth.

*Freaking love the covers, though! I may just continue reading the series just for the fabulous covers. ;)*

What a blast!!

The audio book is well read and starts with the prequel story, 'The Rising Wave', when they first meet.

It's a world where one nation (the Cassians) seems to be at war with most of it's neighbours. Luc is the commander of an army made of ex-slaves of the Cassians and all the other subjugated people the Cassians have tried to crush. They call him the Turncoat King.

Ava finishes her work in Grimwalt preparing to join Luc in the Rising Wave. But things aren't as they used to be Grimwalt.
We learn more about Ava after the prequel and how little she knows about what she is capable of. She had lived such a sheltered life growing up that the whole story she is scrambling to figure out things she should already know.

Almost the whole story Ava stays one step ahead with the help of luck and magic. She makes friends and proves to be someone people will follow. Even more stuff is revealed about her specialness.
And it's all a bit much, but I gobbled it up with a spoon and will gladly go back for second helpings.

I love this author's world building. It keeps me invested and there's just enough intrigue and trouble to stop it from being a cakewalk.
I shelved this one under 'Arabian Magic' because it made me think of 1001 Arabian Nights. It's not really that similar, but there's magic cloaks, assassins, travelling tents, kick ass fighting that only occasionally uses swords.

Safety is fine.

Warning: This book features an invisibility cloak. That may be a deal breaker for some, so you have been warned.

Diener has already authored two of my all-time favorite Sci-fi Romance series—Class 5 and Verdant String—so this turn to a classic fantasy romance is a welcomed change from what has been a successful formula for Diener.

That invisibility cloak I mentioned? It’s not the same as which you are familiar, but instead is created directly from Diener’s unique magic system: magic by sewing. Yes, I said that correctly; magic by sewing, but it can only be performed by the story’s heroine, Ava. That was a bit of a drawback in my opinion because it seems almost like a superpower, which left a big disparity between Ava and our hero, Luc.

I’m through Book 2, so I have more to say in The Threadbare Queen.

Writing- great! For once, this is an author that writes fantastic communication while still preserving suspense throughout. Great world building and setting. I LOVED the unique way the FMC works magic (even though it seemed unlimited - that usually bugs me but didn’t this time).

Plot- I was riveted the entire time even though the romance was basically complete when the book began. This has lots of action, wartime subterfuge, and a cementing romantic relationship.

Characters- The FMC, Ava, was so likable! She was clear-headed and mature, humble while also being confident, forgiving while also sticking up for herself. She was never petty even though lesser people would have been. I loved the way she interacted with others when she had to keep secrets; she built trust and respected her close friends by telling them there was more to the story but she couldn’t tell it to them yet. She treated her love interest with the same respect and trust, and didn’t allow a wedge to come between them. It was just fantastic communication so I never felt dread about when the shoe would drop, but I still felt the attraction in the romance. (In other words, the great communication didn’t make the romance/plot boring.)
She was OP but I surprisingly didn’t mind.

The MMC, Luc, was extremely likable, too. He was capable and a good leader, but without the usual arrogance or quick temper that goes with it. He showed understanding and was calm and clear-headed with how he handled people and situations.

Romance-they are already in love when the book begins and spend the entire book together, but their relationship was still interesting! (I would consider this insta-love but for once it didn’t bother me at all.) I really liked them together; they continued to have a healthy relationship the entire time, and they had good chemistry.

Cliffhanger- no cliffhanger. Ends at a great stopping point. Future books continue with the action associated with people trying to control her magic and countries invading. Book 4 features a new romance with new characters, but be warned, I heard there are two explicit scenes (prob in the same vein as the #0.5 book). I’m fully satisfied with how this ended, so I’m not sure if I’ll read the next installments...

Content-
Language- ten f-words. Not too many other swear words.
Spice- no sex scenes. They insinuate they are going to make love many times, but the curtain is always pulled right away.
Format- ebook on KU
Cover- I LOVE IT! Best ever!!!

How I rated this series-
#0.5 The Rising Wave (required reading- included in the KU ebook for The Turncoat King)- 5 stars
#1 The Turncoat King- 5 stars
*haven’t read the rest*

I strongly recommend first reading the prequel story in the anthology Warlords, Witches, and Wolves as it contains the story of how Ava and Luc met. Frankly, I think that should have been a part of this first book as it not only shows how the two met and fell in love but also contains important background information without which the story feels incomplete. It is why I bumped the rating down rather than up.

That said, I enjoyed this story and will look for any others to follow.

This series continues to be interesting but somehow things became a bit one note after a while. There were just too many assassination and kidnapping attempts. And the heroine’s powers were just too convenient and amazing. Plus, I really wanted the MCs to stop referring to each other as “lover”. Other than those things, this was a solid, fun read. It was actually pretty clean, content-wise, with only a few fade to black scenes, killings, and expletives. I appreciated it.

Read the first chapter and a half and it feels like I've picked up a book in the middle of a story (or one that follows a cliffhanger). When this starts Ava and Luc have already escaped from being kidnapped and already fallen in love. I just feel like I missed so much important stuff and I don't want to feel like I'm playing catch up.

First of all, definitely read the novella The Rising Wave first, because it's not really a prequel. It's like the author took the first chapters of the story and published them separately. IDK why.
Sadly, this book was not as good as the prequel novella The Rising Wave.

LIKES:
✔ Magic based on embroidering.
✔ Good pacing.

DISLIKES:
✘ In The Rising Wave you could really feel the toll magic took on Ava. After all, embroidering is not a quick process. Here, it feels like it's instant. She for one night or day embroiders multiple items of clothing. :/
✘ I wished characters had more depth.
✘ Their romance was kinda instant.

Overall, it could have been better, but I am rounding up 3.5 stars rating to 4 stars for the originality of the magic system.
Looking forward to the sequel The Threadbare Queen.

3.4

There were times when they book dipped into 2-star range and times when this book could be considered 4-stars. So, I've landed somewhere in the middle. The plot development was weak at times and struggled at not having magic solve all problems. When the book was good, was in the midst of a scene. I was easily captivated by what was occurring in the story. I author excels at pulling me into the moment and holding my eyes wide open. It's when I step back and think on the logic of things that this story doesn't feel as well written. It was aggravating that Ava just comes in and solves every single issue her rebel army faces because she just happens to have the right information or her magic gets them out of the jam. She's not lacking in a willingness to work hard, but there was something lacking.

She had been held prisoner for two years and lost all her family, so she's fighting for revenge. Losing everything though, that seems traumatic enough that I don't fully trust her and her feelings when she then, abruptly, commits her entire self to Luc. It's like some young woman's parents dying in a car crash and then she meets and hooks up with a guy at the funeral, and tells everyone a month later that they are getting married. Nobody would think that relationship is going to last. Ava basically does exactly that. On the same day she discovers her mother's bones and fights her way out of her prison, she hooks up with Luc. The next day, she commits to protecting him and spending her life with him. From that moment on, there is only a little more relationship development when Luc discovers her magic. Otherwise, that's it. They're in love and nobody (who is not spelled) questions the quickness and everyone trusts in the relationship.

In some ways, all this makes it plausible to say that Ava does have something to lose in this fight against the monarchy. But then she never really has to see anything bad happen to Luc from being part of the rebellion. And of course, she has so much magic that there is not personal cost to working infinite workings. Okay, slight exaggeration, she does get worn out and has to see was she's working on. So she's limited to her caloric intake and the light of the sun/a campfire. Her lack of real stakes makes her just feel like a magical solution and less of a relatable character. Especially considering how little training she has, yet is brilliant and never fails.

I also would've like to have been understood the rules of the magic of this world. Some magic users can craft pottery, and others have to craft textiles, but can the same same magic user choose both? It seemed that magical crafters were bounded by the length of time their casting would last based on what level of magic they were born with. Then apparently, there is magic that changes one's appearance, or magical fire creators... Ava only embroiders to create magical items, but is she just lacking imagination as to how to use her magic? The plot was set up so that everyone with magic hides away their skills so as not to be kidnapped and forced into creating items for someone else. That leaves a convenient way for the author to not have to explain how the magic works and handy magical items can just pop up at will within the storyline. I guess that is representative of most of my issues with this book: everything is one big convenience. Ava herself is the ultimate convenience.

Despite the faults I see in the story, I cannot deny the author knows how to captivate me. Perhaps that just me, but it is why I went on to read this book after reading the prequel novella. The prequel foretold of all the issues this book had from a writing standpoint, but I was gambling in the potential I could see in the very opening scenes of the prequel. It hooked me immediately, but the ending was the let down as it was so abrupt. I was hoping this full-length novel would have more time to develop things and then paired with some enthralling writing, it would be a winner. Turns out, the development is still only at par. It doesn't exceed expectations, nor impress. It is just enough to allow me to enjoy myself whilst reading, but I don't care all too much whether I end up reading the next book in the series. I think I might, but I won't fight too hard get my hands on a copy.

DNF
I read 70% of this book before I DNFed it. The entire book is a military march: the hero, the heroine, and their army are marching to confront their enemies. I suppose there is a battle looming in the end, but I'm so bored, I can't force myself to read any more. I won't be continuing the series either.
I like this author sci-fi series a lot, both the Verdant String and the Class 5, and I expected better from this series. I guess I'll have to live with the disappointment.

Second read 4/19/24:

I loved this book just as much this time around. I still agree with everything I previously said about it in my rave review below.

I own this book in both Kindle and audiobook format. Unfortunately, I am not impressed with the female narrator of the audiobook, because she doesn't perform the characters, instead simply reading the prose in an unnaturally stilted manner. The male narrator does a fairly good job, but his voice isn't as deep as I imagined Luc's voice being.

Review 4/23/24:

Excellent sword-and-sorcery romantasy

I don't typically read sword-and-sorcery fantasy, but I am a fan of paranormal romance and a fan of Michelle Diener's science fiction romance, which is why I gave this romantasy novel a chance. It is definitely well written. The world building is convincingly drawn. The two main characters, Ava and Luc, are both honorable, dynamic, well matched, co-equal warriors. Most importantly, for this type of story, there is plenty of exciting action.

This book and its sequel exist basically as one long, two-part novel. I normally don't read novels with cliffhangers, but for novels by MD, I am willing to make an exception.

This is a book 1 in a series but read like a book 2. I found out there is a prequel novella. No matter, there is enough back story included that I got enough background of what happened in the novella. Took a bit to orient myself in the world though as there are several kingdoms introduced really early so you have to sort friend/kingdom from foe/kingdom. And honestly I like that the couple are already together and in love when this starts.

I liked the magic concept in this. The heroine is a spellcaster who casts her spells through embroidery and knitting. She embroiders protections, suggestions and compulsions into clothing or through knitting. They can make the wearer better in battle, do things they wouldn't normally do etc. And she can even se suggestions into a person's skin if she is sewing up a cut. Also girlfriend is kinda badass in that at one dire moment, she manages to actually sew while her hands are tied. So yeah.

This is a novel where people are at war. I love that the hero's army is referred to as The Rising Wave. So there is lots of war/battle talk but it is well balanced with the different personalities and relationships of all the characters. Lots of really good supporting characters that surround our intrepid couple. Interesting world.

Good ending. Really interested to see what happens next.

Although this book reads just fine on its own, I recommend reading The Rising Wave story in the Warlords, Witches & Wolves Anthology, which details how Ava and Luc meet and escape from her cousin the Queen’s Herald. Luc has now rejoined the Rising Wave, his army that will march on the Kassians and stop their evil and corrupt rule, giving vengeance to the many people that have been harmed by them. For Ava, it is also very personal, since the Queen’s Herald abducted her and kept her prisoner for two years, had her father killed and kept her mother prisoner until his neglect starved her to death. She has magical skills that he covets, that’s why he will do anything to get her back. Ava uses her unusual magic, which involves embroidery with her intentions included in the working, to protect herself, Luc and a growing number of people she learns to trust in the army she has joined to be with Luc and to help him in his vengeance. I had a hard time putting this book down to rejoin regular life, it was so engrossing, and I hated to get to the end, although it was an awesome ending. With lots of action, intrigue, political maneuverings, and a lovely romance, this was a wonderful read. Luckily, there will be another book in the series, The Threadbare Queen, and I can’t wait to read it.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

Really enjoyed reading The Turncoat King, and will definitely pick up the next in the series when it releases later in the year. I'm glad I started with the prequel novella, which details how Ava and Luc meet, BONUS - both the prequel and The Turncoat King are available in KU (but if this comes out in audio I am one-clicking my own copy).

I LOVE LOVE LOVE when a female main character can hold her own in a fight, and Ava has the skills and ability to do so - I just wish this had been showcased more throughout the plot. Maybe we will see more of those fighting skills in the next book (I hope).

Sewing A Good Tale

Sometimes a lady with plenty of pluck and common sense needs an extra edge. Either to bollux the nasty plans of those who would hold her prisoner (or worse) or to save the man imprisoned with her. Here, a sewing needle and thread just might help her.
Nicely different take on a love at first sight romance.
