FULL METAL JACKET MEETS THE WALKING DEAD IN THIS POST-APOCALYPTIC TALE OF ONE SOLDIER’S DREAM OF BECOMING A HERO.
For as long as he can remember, Reuben’s wanted to be a soldier.
To venture beyond his city’s walls and help win the war against Fear’s army …
To battle amongst the ruined tower blocks, abandoned stadiums, and gargantuan skeletons of long-forgotten shopping malls …
And when he’s helped overthrow the enemy and put an end to the war once and for all, he’ll clear the streets of the snarling, hissing, and foetid diseased …
In his dreams, he’s a hero …
His dreams couldn’t be further from reality.
In fact, the diseased are the only things to meet his expectations. Vile, foetid, and hyper-aggressive, they’re single minded in their purpose; to find every uninfected person on the planet and drive the virus into their blood.
Reuben understood the consequences of war. He’s not an idiot. But is he prepared to lose his life fighting this battle? And now his life belongs to the military, has he waived his right to even make that choice?
Fury is the first book in the post-apocalyptic series of Tales from Beyond These Walls. A stand-alone story set in the Beyond These Walls universe.

Summary: All Reuben ever wanted was to become a soldier in Fury’s army protecting the city from a neighboring city Fear. Even after loosing his mother he never gave up on his goal. In spite of his grief Reuben befriended a homeless man, Malcolm, helping him as much as he could. Reuben’s very compassion could be what saves him or dooms him depending upon your personal beliefs. Reuben joins a team where his presence isn’t wanted with a Sargent who has nothing, but contempt for him. In the city of Fear things may not be exactly what they appear and when Reuben attains his goal he finds that being a soldier may not be what he thought is was.
This was a fascinating look into the conflict that the crew from Beyond These Walls encountered. Reuben’s caring nature was put to the test as he experienced the danger that the soldiers found every day. The very people tasked to protect their city may not be the hero’s they appears to be.
It was incredible how the author placed hints from his other series Beyond These Walls allowing the reader to see what happened from a different vantage point. I for one can’t wait to find what the future has in store for Reuben.
This book is the start of a companion series to Michael Robertson’s fantastic Beyond These Walls series. This story follows Reuben Never, whose dream has always been to become a soldier for his city, Fury, to help eradicate their enemies in the twin city of Fear, then to wipe out the overwhelming hordes of diseased zombies and save his world. Orphaned at the age of eleven, he tries to hold true to his mother’s standards, maintaining a sense of honor, a caring heart and staying in shape to be ready for the Army when he turns eighteen. He has scratched out an existence on his own, and has helped out his only friend, Malcolm, a homeless veteran.
The Army turns out to be quite different from his noble expectations. Instead of camaraderie, his teammates abusively shun friendships which would distract them from staying aware of deadly encounters with heartless killers, and the diseased. Some have turned into mindless killing machines. Reuben finds himself questioning whether the city leaders really want to win the war, or if they just want to hide their intentions with an endless fight, since they only equip the soldiers with batons. Can Reuben stay true to his beliefs or will he be worn down by the hopeless situations?
Mr. Robertson is a great story-teller who really delves into interpersonal relationships. He has built a very complicated post-apocalyptic world and makes it realistic so the reader is totally immersed in the action. I liked the way he linked characters and events from the BTW series for continuity. I am thoroughly enjoying both series and look forward to many more episodes.
This is a standalone novel, the story of Reuben, a young man who had a dream of joining the army on his eighteenth birthday in order to make his mother proud. He had been orphaned at the age of eleven, but his mother lived on in his heart. He believed that joining Fury's army would do this, however he was very ill prepared for what he found behind Fury's gates. There he met with brutal, sadistic soldiers who enjoyed killing in a psychopathic manner, he was bullied and demeaned but held true to his beliefs. Reuben also found love, however no one is a winner in war and he lost more than he could take. He was not ready to lose his soul and all he stood for, for a war which used its soldiers like fodder. Reuben was kind and honourable and refused to be broken. I found the story to be raw and brutal to the extreme, however it is also very gripping and I loved the fact that not everyone is ready to succumb to the bullying and the pressure. Some prefer to hold on to their idealism and honour. I love this standalone story set in the same post-apocalyptic setting as the series of Beyond these Walls and hope to read many more such stories about individual characters.
Micheal Robertson has created an interesting post-apocalyptic world in which zombies are not the only enemy. For the most part we all grow up wanting to be the good guy, we know the difference between right and wrong. We want to help, to be part of the solution. This stand-alone story in the Beyond these walls world explores what life could be like for a young man who grew up much like us. Feed and relatively safe especially for a world as dangerous as this one. What if his beliefs are not quite the truth. What will he do? What would you do? I enjoyed that this book overlapped another in the Tales from Beyond These Walls series. I also liked the surprise ending and amazed at how Micheal keeps adding to the readers understanding of how his world is so skewed. I recommend you put this storyline on your TBR list Thanks for the ARC copy Michael, this is an honest review.
I am a huge fan of Michael Robertson's stories. Beyond These Walls is my favorite series of his so fat. This story takes place within that world. This is a stand alone story and can be read without reading the other stories. The diseased are dangerous and everywhere. This is a story about a boy who wants to be a soldier when he grows up thinking it will make him a hero. He discovers that being a soldier is nothing like he expected. some of his fellow soldiers are not what he had imagined and he does not wish to become like them. There is a lot to this story and I don't want to spoil it for you. All I can say is that I enjoyed it very much and can't wait to read another story. I recommend this story to anyone who likes a GREAT apocalyptic story.
I have become a loyal reader of Michael Robertson's work through the addictive Beyond These Walls series. This spin-off story set in that rich universe just confirmed my loyalty. This is a poignant story that deals with the difficulties of trying to be a good guy when other people's concept of a good guy involves violence and brutality. I think this will resonate with a lot of people because it is a common issue in society - especially for young men. Also prominent are the themes of the futility of war, the dangers of blind patriotism, and the ways in which governments control the narrative of every day life. I'm really glad I gave this book a chance because it was a true success.
Reuben has been waiting to be old enough to serve his city in the endless battle against Fear’s army and the zombie masses who inhabit the wasteland outside the city walls. But not all -- maybe nothing -- is as it seems. Decent plot, reasonably interesting protagonist with lots of future potential for development, but hamstrung by a relatively flat writing style. Generally fell into what I think of as “YA Adjacent” in terms of sophistication and use of language. Very long series -- there appear to be (at least) 11 more.
This first of the stand-alone Beyond these Walls stories is going to be hard to top. Fury focuses the Army and a recruit named Ruben who feels his duty is to defend Fury. This story is action-packed, and filled with developing relations his between Ruben and his teammates. Additionally, as the story develops Ruben learns more about Malcom his homeless friend. If you have read the Beyond These Walls series this is a must read. If you are new to Michael Robertson’s stories, this would be an awesome introduction to not only his works, but to the world of Beyond These Walls. I received an Advance Reader Copy and chose to provide this review.
I really enjoyed Reuben's story in the world of Beyond These Walls. He was a great character and it was sad to see the gradual disillusionment about the pointless war between Fury and Fear...and yet, aren't all wars pointless, merely there for the few to have power over the many?
His responses, however, we about hope and his internal fight not to lose his decency. There were other interesting, if not all likeable characters, making the plot believable and realistic.
This was a very well-written story, a brilliant addition to my favourite series by this author, despite it not involving the main characters. It would be intriguing if there was more about Reuben.
When a series is as good as BTW what more could you ask for than a world expansion!
'I can’t control what happens, but I can control how I react to it.' This is a fast paced, action filled story about Rueben who aspired to be a soldier for Fury's army.
'A stampede flooded forwards. A force too great to overcome.' This was a brilliant piece of world expansion, really detailing the pointless war between Fury and Fear.
Rueben is such a brilliant character and a really good person he deserves so much better.
I really enjoyed this glimpse into life in one of the warring cities that we'd been introduced to in the Beyond the Walls series. Reubens journey from eager fresh recruit to hardened vet within such a short time shows us, I think, a true picture of how things could be if the wrong people end up in charge. I'd love to see more of Reubens upcoming journey in the future.
Reuben has dreamed of being a soldier for his city of Fury. Fighting against the enemy city of Fear. But the reality of what its like outside the walls in the ruined city is a shock. Reubens story is full action and surprises which grips from the first to the last page. There's even an appearance from William and his friends. Definitely recommend this book
A day in the life of a soldier.reuben sets out to live his life long dream of participating in national service.his journey is one full of love and loss.a great portrayal of a soldier doing his duty until the realization hits that you can and should only fight for a cause that you truly believe in.
I cannot see where the first part, the prologue I think, comes into or leads into the story line? Other than that a good book to link in the city to the beyond these walls series.
Fury is a stand-alone story based in the world of Beyond These Walls by Michael Robertson and it is excellent! The MC are well developed and it’s packed with action and danger. I highly recommend it.
