The writing style is not for ME. I've got a headache just trying to make it through the first 30%, after 3 hours I'm tapping out.

I LOVED this book. If you like fantasy, fae, paranormal, or an excellently written combination of the above, this book is for you.

I don't know where to start. First, I ADORED the main character Rowan. She's a snarky, feisty, powerful, take life by the balls kind of girl and it made the story so much better because she was a SUPER strong heroine. Kudos to the author. Very well done. I love a strong female lead, even with her own weaknesses, and Rowan did not disappoint.

Second, the story was full of action, drama, love, anger, hate, joy, humor, revenge, light, darkness, and drew me in almost from the first sentence. The story is well paced, filled with twists and turns, and I love that the different points of view were so seamless in transition that I never lost sight of who was taking the forefront. So many wonderful characters that were rich, full of depth, and well written.

Third, the writing is flawless. I felt immersed in the world created and I loved the perfectly executed scenes woven throughout the book, from love and lust, to the final battle cry, and everything in between. Such an excellent depth of rich explanation, I truly enjoyed this novel and the journey of the heroine all the way up to the final sentence.

Lastly, I am a romance fan and this book did not disappoint. Personally I like a good sex scene, especially when its been built up between the characters and this was certainly done well in addition to everything else. I have to say, I'm a bit of fan of Outlander, so a highlander with his accent? Swoon. Won me over instantly.

My only question: where the heck was Eve and what happened to her?

I'm excited to continue this series and read the continuation of these characters. An excellent 5 STAR read. Don't miss it. And I really have no idea how every review is not a 5 star for this one. Seriously, if you read it, how could you give it less? At any rate, this is one I'll go back to and reread and I don't say that often. A refreshing new author with a lot of talent, be sure to set some time aside because you won't want to put it down until finished. I read it in less than a day. Enjoy the wild ride, it's a guaranteed pleasurable one!

Sins of the Sidhe – Briana Michaels
Shatter - Book 1

Wow, this author has quickly become a favourite with me. This I believe, is her very first foray into the literary world as a published writer. And what a debut!

We first meet our FMC, Rowan as she prepares for a girlie day out with her two besties. Rowan has a dark secret. She is a soul seer and has been sort out by dark spirits since she was a small child. Rowan struggles with this side of herself as she does not fully understand what it is or where it came from.

Our male lead is a Druid (think Highlander meets Braveheart) named Devlin who is a sinfully sexy tall drink of water. When Devlin meets Rowan, the heat notches up to five alarm fire level! These two were destined to be joined to in a way that will bring the fated end to Devlin’s and the Fae world’s long time enemy, Lorcan.

Lorcan, a seriously dark Sidhe, has plagued Rowan’s unconscious mind for years. His sultry journeys into her dreams have always left her feeling emotionally wrung out yet connected to him in a very erotically dark way. This leaves Rowan extremely vulnerable to his mind games, as she cannot resist his sensual pull.

Rowan and Devlin, aided by Adam, a legendary Sidhe warrior who has his own history with the Lord of Darkness Lorcan, and Ava, part Sidhe/part Angel who has a timely knack for Divine Intervention, embark on a journey of dangerous missions and sometimes even more dangerous self-discovery as they search for ways to destroy Lorcan.

The one-liners and pop-culture references kept me smiling through the entire journey. The lead couple were romantic and volatile in a way that kept me guessing which direction their next scene would take. The steamy combustion in some of their more intimate scenes left me fanning myself as my own body temperature rose with each encounter... *phew*

The character development and world building are substantial for the author’s first effort. I expect that as I progress through this series, I will see not only the further development of the plot and characters, but the growth of the author as she further hones her craft.

Can’t wait to read the next instalment in this series – Book 2, Shine!
Four stars for this stellar debut!

If you have put this on your to read list you are missing out on an exciting adventure! This genre is a combination of DG's Outlander and Karen Moning's Fever series, I haven't read anything this good since I read them. Briana had all of the elements that I love to read about, Scotland, Highlanders,Druids, swodrplay, Sidhe and all the faery folk, last but not least sizzling romance! I give it a HOT! HOTTER! HOTTEST!! rating, definately NOT recommended for YA. This was a page-turner, can't put it down read. So much so I am already reading SHINE, book 2, and so far it does not disappiont! Love this new author, singing her praises everywhere. What are you waiting for???

Great first to a series

I’m not sure how something can be light, dark, sweet, and scary all at once, but this does it. The main character is sunshine and tsunami all at once and the plot is layered well.

I got this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I did not finish this book, even though I kept trying to push myself to keep reading it. It's listed as 390 pages in paperback form on Amazon, typically I can read and retain about 100 pages an hour, if not a little more - just to give you a basis to understand part of my frustration. I made it to 22% on my kindle, the beginning of chapter 9 - approximately 86 pages - and it took me 2 and a half hours to get that far.

Almost immediately the tense was shifting between past and present, which is something that throws off the story in a huge way for me. I can't settle into enjoying it. The author gives a lot of meaningless (to the story at this point anyway) background information - which comes across as filler, rather than a way to let the reader experience the characters interactions in the world and with other characters.

From there it seemed there were big blocks of summary, as if there was another story that either should have been told (whether as a prequel, or in flashbacks throughout the book as it became important to the plot), that were crammed in. It was really frustrating to try to connect with the characters, only to have a several page long summary of some other time/event/persons motives show up.

Even at chapter 9 it still felt like the author was doing mass quantities of set up, with very little plot progression or character development. The story up to this point is mostly observations in the characters heads, their thoughts, with limited interaction or true dialogue to allow the reader to get to know them.

The premise was a good one, supernatural bad guy and his evil minions want to escape their plane of existence where they're weakened and trapped, and it's up to the good guys to come to the rescue and restore the balance. I was excited to see how it would be accomplished, and it seemed like it should be fast paced and action packed. Maybe it gets better later, but I honestly can't stand to read any more. The execution was just not for me at all. I felt like the author was trying to shove 2-3 different stories into one book, or was maybe transferring some smaller segments she'd written in preparation for the book as a whole, but didn't properly integrate them.

It just felt disjointed, long winded, and honestly, I didn't connect with a single character, or get enough plot revealed/progressed to feel like there was any point to continuing. Typically I have a 5% or 3 chapter rule - if the author can't draw me in to some aspect of the story enough to care about it and want to continue reading by 5% or chapter 3, whichever is longer, then I stop reading and move on to something else. I pushed myself further with this book, in the hopes it would pick up since it has such good reviews, but I can't keep forcing it any longer.

I absolutely adored the strong female lead, Rowan. Funny and passionate, she holds her own in a supernatural shitstorm with fae, druids and demons. The plot kept me guessing and the romance was sizzling! The book is self-contained, so you don't have to buy the next one to find out what happens to the characters next, but with engaging secondary characters and story arcs, you'll want to!!

This book was simply amazing! It brought out every emotion (love, lust, fear, victory and defeat)! The characters are beyond interesting and the story had me hooked from Chapter 1! You won't be able to put it down - forget dinner ladies!

Wow this was terrible. The author cannot write a single chapter without using at least 10 hackneyed expressions and twice as many cliches. The characters are sticks of wood, the plot is predictable, and most of the character development feels likes it’s been lifted from other, better books. Also, turning the Sidhe into pseudo-vampiric creatures is a cheap shot. Frankly, I’m glad it was a free download so I don’t have to regret spending any money.

I wasn’t exactly sure if the book I was reading was the same book that I read about in its description, because it was so much more. Our heroine, Rowan, has special supernatural abilities. As a teenager, she thought she was losing her gift, so in desperation she performed an action that accidentally set forth a dark evil into the world. Year later, people have come to her looking for her help in setting things right. And that’s about all I’m going to say about the plot, because you have to read the book. It was basically everything I wanted in a great read: fae, mystery, darkness, romance (of the very hot and steamy variety), relationship struggles, humor, frustration. I couldn’t put the book down, I needed to know what was going to happen, while having thoughts like “damn it, no!”, “please don’t let this really be happening”, and “awwww...”. There were so many surprises; just when you thought your brain could handle it – no! The author throws in a twist that makes you internally (or maybe externally) scream with frustration, because the story is just so good. My feelings about Shatter are much more eloquent when I’m thinking it, but my review is kind of a jumbled mess because my brain is fried in trying to process and re-process this awesome book. A must read book and series!

I love reading fantasy. It takes me away from the mundane world into quixotic and fascinating realms. I picked up Shatter by Briana Michaels and was captivated by her story of Rowan. The plot is somewhat intricate but certainly not trite! Her characters are interesting and fun. My only problem with the book, and this may be due to poor editing, were the numerous typos, grammar and spelling hitches. It got in the way of my enjoyment; however, a friend who recently downloaded it, said the errors must have been corrected because they weren't there now. So, it seems that many of those problems have been taken care of by better editing. Terrific!
Rowan is a character who gets stronger and sexier as the story progresses and her forays into the realms of demons, fairies, vampires and other creatures take my imagination on a fun and entertaining ride! I plan to read the next book in the series very soon!

I purchased this book because it was recommended to me by a fan of the JR Ward Series Black Dagger Brotherhood. I enjoy the combination those books over of romance and fantasy while maintaining a solid plot that will be carried out through a series of books.
Shatter was everything I had hoped it would be, and so much more. This writer has a young, fresh voice, who's spirit you can all but see jumping off the pages. Her story offers readers a contemporary feel, with a twist in lands beyond the here and now. I also absolutely loved how her story lines looped back around and connected. I cannot wait to read the next book of the series, and see what all she does with it.

This is a great book! I had the pleasure of meeting the author at a book fair an decided to pick up a copy of her book, an was pleasantly surprised by how good it is! I didn’t have a hard time following what was going on an I never wanted to put it down! Every chapter kept me wanting more. It is a tad repetitive with some of the phrases, an has some words missing in sentences, but that’s easily overlooked. The main character Rowan is very relatable to me, a super headstrong female with a loving soft heart. I am super excited to read the next one! So glad I picked up book 1-3 😊

This book had so much potential, the storyline was a great one but unfortunately this book was awful, best way to describe this book is 'cheesy' it was like reading a syfy b-rated movie. The characters were immature, and just plain stupid, you just wanted to smack them upside the head.

I hate the fact that I am one of these people who will stick with a book no matter how bad it is, this one was pure torture.

This book is the beginning of it all. I have read every book in this series and I am anticipating the release of the newest installment. Each book takes on new love and new enemies while still watching the other characters grow and evolve into who they are meant to be. This series and its author are amazing!

I gave it a 2 chapter chance and couldn't get past the mixing of tenses, poorly structured sentences, and the cadence of the narration. If I would give the author advice it would be two-fold: 1) slow down and show the story (because it sounds like it could be a good one) and 2) work with an editor that is willing to help with the sentence structure.

This review is just me recounting the events of what happened in the book so I can I remember what I've read.

I suggest not reading this if you don't want to know all the details I'm recounting.

Okay, so, we got rowan, Christina, & brinley. They are three beasties. They head to the ren fair, both dressed up except for christine, which was predicted by the other two & a bummer. They got to tarrot reading there & brinley is read. The psychic though freaks out & says, I can't read your card, you need to leave. The girls leave & the psychic calls up someone & says, "found the shadow breaker"....dun, dun, dun....

Her profession is blowing glass - she owns a shop (does this along side jeremy) also, apparently sees dead ppl in her dreams....

There's Adam, lorcan, ava, druid, & delvin. Adam & Loran or fallen fae?

Adam & delvin stop by her shop - they ask her if she can see the darkness, they stopped time, she says yes, they ask her to come with them. Apparatus delvin is a druid.

Sooo, apparently, it's her fault they all are dealing w/the darkness. For yrs she was able to talk w/dead spirits after the cat that swiped at her keg & seeing her friends grandma appear during a seance during a sleepover. They stopped "coming" to her & she was obsessed. So she went to the woods & summoned them up by blood - apparently it unleaded a real bad evil lord & delvins pissed. At the end of her story, they knock her out.

Wakes up to a fox on her bed. She pets him, the boys apologize for putting her under using a spell. The fox name is fintain they are heading to Ireland for her to train. She's packing. And I ahve a feeling she's eventually gonna be w/two dudes, delvin (druid) & Adam (fae). There's a shadow in the curtains. She defeats it by swiping her hand at itm she lies to Adam about it. He tells her to tell the truth. She tells it. Then delvin comes in, kisses her.

Okay, apparently lorcans got a hard on for rowan. He's been watching her but when he finds out she left not on a usual "outing" w/her friends, he got made & told his minor of darkness to find her...

Ava joined the group. They are at another place. Ava sees lorcan through her, tells the guys. She admits that lorcan feels good to her. They eat dinner. She goes to bed. Fox follows, she's naked, delvinnxan see through foxes eyes but refuses to let him seed ro any further.

Oh man, I'm so bored w/this book. Delvin takes her to faeland - she loves it there, then gets frustrated about her situation....,then screams "you should belong with me" then they kiss, make out angrily, then have some good Ole sex. & some more sex, where she then accuses him teasingly that he put a spell on her.

Intro of black dog of death.

Okay so they are bonded. She claimed delivin. He gets to see all her memories & past. They suggest she speak w/the dead again even though the refused before & hadn't done so in yrs...

Ooo, bad lorcan. Got a grip on ro when she was trying to communicate w/the dead. Got her on a bed, makes her take her clothes off & masturbate, hoping to fully piss delvin off knowing that they both claimed each other when it was he who to claim her, not him awkward.sexy fun time in her head turned to burns, scratches, & bite marks...by the black dogs lorcan commanded. Awkward - oh, wow, lorcan had some fun w/her forcing her to orgasm mixed w/pain was truly torture. Poor girl. But thankfully, a shadow helped her escape when lorcans round of fun had to cease for a scheduled dinner for souls.

She returns, delvin runs like a pansy away from her so she believes he doesn't want her. She's mad & he thinks she doesn't want him anymore cause he couldn't protect her. Whatever. They finally argue, then make up. Yay.

They talk about the shadow at her bed. It gets worse. Apparently the shadow is a big deal. Brinley wants to help. Ro doesn't want her there to get her. They argue. Ro tells her to leave. Brinley doesn't. Ro punches her. They throw some words. Brin leaves the room. Later, ro apologizes. Brins not in the mood to forgive. Brin leaves w/Adam....

Ro recounts what happened to her w/lorcan - edited sexul version. Tells them about lorcans soul collecting (thousands of them) delvin & her have some quick sex. Then they train her how to keep her thoughts to herself. It's not going too well though .

....did they just get married?

& the death bringer has arrived...alrighty then - he's also the one who marked rowan as the shadow breaker, I guess.. - he gifts her a dagger that will kill any fae w/one strike.

Lorcan wants ro cause dead souls flock to her & he can use them to his will, so naturally, he wants her as his queen. Still pissed that delvin has her & married to boot

When lorcan first found that ro had escaped, he killed Lal the souls around. Ro, this time around, when seeking the shadows, she found semus dying & the rest of the dead. He pleaded w/her to save him/them.

Lrocan captured brinley. Go figure

Okay, so lorcan is now corporal. He takes brinley, as we already know. Ro uncuffs her, hoping she doesn't die. Lorcan comes over & gets he rally nestled on the bed & away from brinley cause he needs her for souls. Also, he's a randy little shit. Then she ends up stabbing his side when the others get there - delvin, ava, & Adam. He back hands her. Lorcan & delvin fight it out. Ro comes to. Thinks up the damsel card & lulls lorcan into a flash sense of security by choosing him over delvin. This breaks devlins heart. Lorcans all smug. They kiss & make out. She gets him into position, then flings at her magic while then stabbing him w/the fancy fae dagger. She ends up "sacrificing herself in the process cause it takes too much of her energy. She saves the souls from lorcans dead clutches, tell them to "head toward the light ",they go into her to save her life, saying she is "light".

Adam has a brother named Ruark.

Delvin brings her to faeland where they live hea. Ugh.

My first book by this author and will be my last.
I was enjoying this book up until about 50%.....hence the 2 star rating.
At this stage Rowan started to do my head in. Her instant anger had me rolling my eyes. The way she treated her life long friend Brinley.
Everything from that point on just annoyed the fuck out of me. Her pity parties were numerous but then every character in this book had them....made this book very hard reading.
Rowan description was confusing....Devlin description had her as short but Lorcan was thinking about her long legs??? WTH
Finally about 80% I couldn’t take it anymore and started skimming right up to the end of the book.
I had such high hopes for this book and series...I’m disappointed that I won’t be continuing on with series, I honestly thought I would be adding this series to my favorites.

I started reading this book at the advice of a book friend who loved it. For me, it started out really promising, but somewhere near the end I lost interest. A few days ago I decided to finish it since I was at 89%.

I think the problem for me was the love connection seemed forced. Or maybe I find it unfathomable to fall so deeply in love with someone in like, 2 days. But fine, they love each other so much, so much, so much! Everything changes. The world bends to their new found love. Then something happens and they question everything? Like, make up your mind.

BUT, that being said, I am going to read the next one because the world that Brianna created is interesting. I'm just not sure I care for the people in it.

Wow I don't know what to say about this book.

I was lucky enough to win this book in a competition and I loved it that much I just had to leave a review.

Rowan has grown up knowing she is different from all of her friends, why? Because she is able to communicate with the dead.

Devlin is the last druid on earth. Forced to keep the balance between realms all the while seeking the shadow destroyer who is the only one that can end the ultimate soul sucker.

A chance encounter at a fair with a tarot reader has Rowan and Devlin's path crossing, but the fates and the gods have already decided what is to become of the druid and soul seeker.

Well done Briana fantastic novel and I can't wait to see what the rest of the series has installed.

I adore Briana Michaels’ Hell Hounds Harem series so I thought I’d enjoy this as well. I was wrong. The writing in this book is weird and I just can’t get into it.

I’m not sold on the way events are transpiring, it’s unrealistic and frustrating. I’m also not sure I like these characters and I don’t care to stick around and find out. Everyone just seems to be strong arming FMC into doing what they need her to do and she lets them.

NOT Reverse Harem. This is a very low steam, urban fantasy, M/f romance. Standalone.

Owner of my tears, Briana Michaels.

Briana sure does know how to write a fantastic story full of drama, action, love, hate, darkness, light, humour and so much more. I even shed a few tears near the end.
I loved Rowan and reading her journey into discovering who she is. Looking forward to reading the next book to see what trouble is brewing next!

The story might have been interesting but I couldn't get past switching between past and present tenses in the same paragraph, Rowan sometimes referring to herself in 3rd person, and the blatant use of a thesaurus to increase the word count. I couldn't finish the book.
