Champion Webbe is one of a trio assigned by Mageleader Eliane to Aolin Castle and young King Llewellyn offering Mage support, while reminding Webbe that Mages never fail. Webbe is determined to keep her own Sage Wizard skills hidden from her Mageleader, the King, and her partners, Swordmaster Mage Aurora and Sage Wizard Briana, and display only sensing abilities in her role, relying on wits and tricks to protect the King.
When she senses treachery and the possibility of approaching war, the threats are verified by the ancient and mysterious Ruani or Flamestones, who give her tools for twisting time, without the knowledge to use them. While Bri and Rho investigate trouble in other areas, Champion Webbe is challenged in a tournament by the powerful and unethical Sage Wizard Morab, known as a destroyer and bone-crusher, and uses her trickster side to defend herself and the King’s reputation without revealing her own sorcery.
To save Aolin and the King, Webbe chooses to demand answers from Morab’s master, Bannon, King Llewellyn’s foe, recognizing him as an honorable man, and uses his help with the future to try and save the present. With well-intentioned interference from her trickster sister Bridget, Webbe tangles herself in timetwists, finds and loses elemental spellstones, and uncovers a well-planned plot by Morab to destroy Aolin and the King she’s come to love, but Mages never fail.
