Learn the science of weight loss without getting roped into a pyramid scheme.

Quick fixes, quack gurus, and folks raving about “the one true way to lose fat” dominate the nutrition universe. Have you ever wondered why you lose the pounds in the beginning of a new plan, only to gain them back plus some? Are you tired of hopping on and off the Yo-Yo diet wagon? Discover the science behind weight loss and never again get caught in a sista’s side hustle.

You’re doing it wrong. Stop spending your hard-earned cash on those juice pills. There is no magic shake. Don’t fall for the super berry hoax. Deep down, you know why those other things don’t work. Inside you will learn the tools to design your own plan, to keep the fat off, and to fit back into your skinny jeans. Do your eyes glaze over with articles on the latest research? No problem. In this challenging but conversational book, MK Lorber breaks down all those swanky science terms into easily understandable concepts. She’s even included cute infographics to illustrate the key concepts. Melissa crafts slightly inappropriate food trivia, dad jokes, and plenty of sarcasm with a tongue-in-cheek approach to the weight loss process. More than that, she reveals a step-by-step guide and practical solutions, which folks can tailor to fit their unique circumstances.

Will this be the year you lose the baby weight and keep it off? Will you complete that race on your bucket list? Or will you finally take control of your health and live yo’ best life? This book won’t win any awards for literary prizes for pretty prose, but it just might be the diet manual that turns around your crazy train.

Buy The Unicorn Diet today and start your journey toward finally losing the fat, forever.

MK is the leading authority on nothing. Nada. Zip, zero, zilch.

A healthcare worker by day and an introvert by night, MK escapes the daily grind though romance novels and youth sports. When she's not writing or working or drinking too much coffee, MK is loosely parenting her four kids (who are convinced she was put on this earth to embarrass them), her two fluffy pups, and one giant moose-cat. The rest of the time she is trying to convince her other half that they need goats. And chickens. MK lives in the armpit of the Midwest with her partner-in-crime and their crazy circus.

A really comprehensive, scientific, but fun look at how food is processed by your body and the best way to eat to your advantage.

This is not a regular Diet book. It goes into the real ways of what food does to your body. The illustrations are wonderful, I really enjoyed them. As a woman who is wanting to lose weight, this book helped me to find the simple ways to change my eating habits without having a huge change in my diet. I would recommend this book to anyone that would like more information on the ways to eat healthier without restricting your body.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

A humorous look at all the information out there about dieting and weight loss. While the author seems to come from it from a pro-carb point of view as she's an athlete (i.e. criticizing Paleo Patty), she takes a fair look at all the diet nonsense that's out there. This is actually a really quick read, but I took some extra time to do the homework, which I recommend, as it helps solidify some of the concepts. There's nothing new or earth shattering in this book, but as someone far removed from HS science classes, some of the how and why on converting macronutrients was very helpful.

While I enjoyed her friends the mythbusting mermaid and no drama llama, I couldn't really follow some of the asides, like the beaver habitats. It felt like she was trying to add length that wasn't really necessary. May be an audience thing as I'm also the wrong age for repetitious "your mama" jokes. Overall though a good read.

Would recommend reading this in hard copy or on a color device as some infographics did not come out clearly on the Paperwhite.

Funny. Irreverent. Useful. MK Lorber's The Unicorn Diet is the book by which you want to measure all other diet books. This book isn't going to tell you what to eat, when to eat or specifically even how to eat. What it is going to give you is the science behind the food you eat and how the body uses them. While some people may find the use of animals (pigs, unicorns, sloths, and llama) a bit silly, the use of them provides a break from what could be very cut, dried, and boring science lectures. Instead the book is very relatable and would serve as a useful too for anyone over the age of 13. Something i particularly enjoyed was that each section had it's references listed at the end of the section, rather than just at the end of book, making it easier to fact check of use to gain more information. The next time you see a new diet come out, this is the book you want to have at hand in order to evaluate whether what's being proposed make sense. The Unicorn Diet is an excellent resource.

Get your notebook or highlighter ready because you're going to want it! The Unicorn Diet was a very interesting read, diving right into the science of food, what the different macronutrients are, why we need them, and what they do in our bodies. That provided a spine for Lorber to build on with discussion of calories and how to determine what percentage of your diet should be made up of which macronutrients.

Unlike many other nutrition and diet books, Lorber isn't out to tell you exactly what to eat or not eat; she's giving you the tools to understand exactly what you're eating, and the knowledge to determine what changes would be best for you. She doesn't demonize any one category of foods: carbs aren't necessary, *but also* they're the body's preferred source of fuel. Omega-6 fatty acids are essential to our bodies working correctly, *and at the same time,* most people who consume the Standard American Diet are getting an unhealthily-high amount of omega-6s.

The science and math involved really appealed to me; she explained a lot of the "why" in a way I hadn't heard before, and I appreciated the many footnotes to studies that supported her points.

Lorber's style is very conversational, making the sometimes-complicated scientific information feel fairly simple to understand. Not all of her humor was to my taste, but she *did* warn readers about that at the beginning, and it wasn't such that I wouldn't recommend the book to friends (just, probably with a caveat).

I received an advance review copy of The Unicorn Diet, but all opinions are my own.

Seriously packed with useful info

I received this book free through a giveaway on goodreads. I loved the message that weight loss is a journey that takes time and the building of good habits. If you're looking for the latest rapid weight loss diet fad, this is not the book for you. However, if you're interested in learning practical, useful and realistic information on weight loss, then I highly recommend this book. As a bonus, there was a lot of humor mixed in with all that great knowledge too. I rated 4 stars because the first 4 chapters were just a little too dry and science heavy for me, as well as the excessive repetition of the phrase "swanky term for." However, pretty much everything starting from chapter 5 on was extremely helpful. Definitely recommended.

Unicorn diet plausible.

I received this book from a Goodreads Giveaway.

Basic common sense will help you lose weight, but is it really that easy. A great many points to think about on the weight lost journey. Some of the things are scientific (good fats vs. bad fats), mental and physical.

I won this book from Goodreads. I liked the title, so I signed up not really knowing if this was a children's book or for any age group.

I really did like the book. I especially liked the story on beavers and the reference to Princess Bride (yes, one of teh best movies). The oictures really did help too. I liked the Yo-Yo Yak a lot. The book contains some sound advise in a whimsical way. Main criticism is the over use of the the word Swanky.

Thanks for putting this on Goodreads.

This book is different, it is not a what to eat type of book with recipes this is a why you do what you do and what you should do to lose weight and maintain your weight. Also there is homework! Don’t worry the author gives you the homework list at the end of the book so you won’t miss anything. I like the humour that she used and it makes reading the information easier. It is a book you are going to want to keep and highlight and make notes. A reference book to help you lose weight and keep it off. I like the ending “just breathe and be kind to yourself”. I received an advance review copy and the views and opinions are my own.

I really liked this book! A friend from my gym recommended it when I was looking for a “reset” on nutrition after the holidays, and it was so much more than that. I loved that it provided me with essential framework and knowledge necessary to create a lifetime focus on nutrition, not a quick fix. I will warn you, if you are looking for the easy way out, or a shortcut to weight loss, this is not the book for you. This is for people who are looking to make positive, long term changes to their diet.

One of the Best “Diet” Books I’ve Read

As an overweight woman, I have read a number of diet books over the course of my life. This is one of the most rational ones I’ve read, and that's a good thing! So many diet books and websites are overly hype-y and low on science. This author has chosen to take the opposite tack. Much of the book is about the science of food and how it acts and reacts with your body. This might sound bland and uninteresting, but the author writes in a witty, snappy, and engaging style. It's like you're talking about food with your smart, wisecracking bestie who only has your best interest at heart. She explains the science of nutrition using relatively simple terms and a generous amount of infographics. At the end of each chapter, she provides a list of her scientific resources. Honestly, this book is awesome and should be read by anyone who is considering jumping on the newest diet bandwagon. After she schools you in nutrition, she offers a sane approach to weight loss. Seriously, this is a great book, extremely well written and accessible. If a new diet is on the horizon for you or you just want to learn more about nutrition and weight loss in a fun but scientifically accurate manner, check out this book.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Not a diet book but a diet adjacent book - learn all you need to know to finally lose those pounds

If you are looking for another fad diet in hopes of losing that holiday pounds then this is not the book for you. But if you want to learn more about different various diet related things then this is a good book to pick up. It has clear and fairly concise information about macronutrients, calories, energy expenditure, determining your actual calorie requirements, myths about metabolism, and several others. The book starts out with a poem, An Ode to Diet Landia, and will keep you entertained while you learn throughout.

I received a copy of this book and am leaving my honest review. My opinions are all my own.

This is a fun easy read that is not talking about another diet but is rather a way to educate us about diet related topics, and guides us to find a way to loose the weight we don’t want.

I enjoyed how the author goes through all the areas that it tackles in a hilarious way! It gives many tips and useful information about macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates etc), busts all kinds of diet related myths, talks about energy, metabolism, how to proper track food, numerus food facts and so much more! Assist us in finding the best diet for us!

I received a free ARC copy of this book but that did not affect my review in any way.

This book contains clear and concise instructions on how to follow this diet with interesting adjectives and tips that motivate me to follow through with the diet because with me it's more about motivation to stick with it. It has only been a week. I have only lost 3 lbs thus far, but Im sure I will lose more in time.

This is not your typical diet book! The science of weight loss is broken down and made accessible so you can plot your own course to weight loss and health. All the information is presented bluntly and with good humor, and at the end, you are given "homework" instead of a step-by-step plan, which ultimately, should allow readers to focus on a lifestyle change instead of just cycling through another diet plan.

I enjoyed this refreshing take on the science of food and dieting - it's always nice to come across a book that doesn't take itself too seriously, but gives solid information!

Thank you to BookSirens and MK Lorber for the advance review copy in exchange for my honest opinion!
