The Reincarnationist Papers is now the Paramount movie INFINITE starring Mark Wahlberg.
Oprah Magazine lists The Reincarnationist Papers as one of 28 books to read before they are 2021’s most popular movies
Discovered in an antique store in Rome at the turn of the millennium, The Reincarnationist Papers offers a tantalizing glimpse into the Cognomina, a secret society of people who possess total recall of their past lives. Evan Michaels struggles with being different, with having the complete memories of two other people who lived sequentially before him. He fights loneliness and believes his ‘condition’ is unique until he meets Poppy. She recognizes his struggle because she has the same ‘condition’, except that she is much older, remembering back seven consecutive lives. But there is something else she must share with Evan – she is a member of a secret society of others like them. They are, in effect, near immortals - compiling experiences and skills over lifetimes into near superhuman abilities that they have used to drive history toward their own agenda on a longer timeline. Through Poppy, Evan is invited into the Cognomina but he must decide if he can face their tests before entering this new mysterious society as their equal.
D. Eric Maikranz is an internationally published author of fiction and non-fiction titles and has had a multitude of lives in this lifetime. As a world traveler, he was a foreign correspondent while living in Rome, translated for relief doctors during a cholera epidemic in Nicaragua and was once forcibly expelled from the nation of Laos. He has worked as a tour guide, a radio talk show host, a nightclub bouncer, and as a Silicon Valley software executive. His debut novel, The Reincarnationist Papers, was adapted into the blockbuster film, INFINITE, staring Mark Wahlberg.
Eric Maikranz' Origins Prequel is an excellent appetizer for his novel, The Reincarnationist Papers. It is a quick read that has me totally hooked on the characters. I can't wait to jump into the rest of the story!
I look fwd 2 the book that follows and the movie version. My faith does not have me believing in reincarnation but I do hav an open mind. The book had me intrigued from the very start. Good job Maikranz!
I'd heard of The Reincarnationist Papers a few years ago. At the time, the Kindle version wasn't available so, I waited patiently. I forgot about it until the movie, Infinite, was released last month.
After watching the movie, I decided to look into the novel again. I read several review, wasn't quite sure that I'd like the novel so, I started with this prequel.
While I am intrigued by the premise, the writing style and the promise of action, this prequel didn't bring me any closer to wanting to read the novel.
I started out enjoying the story and waiting for action or something more to happen. Then, Chapter 5 happened. While I do Iike a unique approach to storytelling, I do not like spending and entire chapter on existential internal dialogue which then leads to external existential dialogue. A page or two would've been plenty for me. I read fiction for entertainment and thought provoking themes.
Now I'm back to vacillating between whether or not I want to read the novel. I'm not at all sure, now, that I can sit through multiple Chapter 5s in the much longer format of a novel.
Eric finds three unusual books, that stand out and draw him in! They are written in Bulgarian, and in his quest to translate them, makes a friend of Marina who works in the Embassy. They become partners and friends, and with the help of others along their journey, they discover this is the work of a man who has led many lifes, and what they discover changes everything....This short Prequel gives just enough information that I now want to instantly read the next book, it has piqued my interest in something i have always believed in...Reincarnation....
This was a prequel to the series, it was interesting! I could not put it down, I could not wait to see what Marian and Eric found out about the book's. It was very fascinating, when they visited the Romani camp to get information, on the reincarnationist, and the information they obtained was very heartfelt, and overwhelming! I want to know more of who Evan was, and where he has been, and his interactions with Poppy, and who are the other's that are in the secret society! I look forward to buying the Infinite series, and also, look forward to the movie that is coming out from this book!
Oh Lord! This was only 60 pages long, but I could not make it past page 24. This is THE WORST thing I have read—or rather tried to read—in a long time. He lets the Bulgarian borrow the books for the weekend, but apparently she doesn’t read them as she sits reading them during their picnic. We are tortured with his tourist guide spiel, complete with Shakespearean recital. The list goes on and on. What little of this I managed to suffer through has left such a bad taste in my mouth, I’m giving the book a pass, and may even pass on the movie, too. Yuck!
I read the first few chapters and found that I kept looking at the percentage read, I couldn’t wait to get to the end. It’s very hard for me to quit a book once I’ve started, I keep thinking/hoping that it might get better. At 64% done I couldn’t take it anymore and went to the last chapter. It was as bad as the first few and I didn’t see anything different so I was done. Sorry.
I always worry about a book who's main "selling point" is that it has sold X , has been on X list for X weeks or has been made into a film. That said this novella/prequel was in my opinion very much worth reading & worth my time. It gave me enough information to decide that I would like to read the "1st" book. I do hope that it does the same for you. ThankS,
Written as a real discovery of notebooks that led to the writing of The Reincarnationist Papers. I have seen the movie which I found exciting and it was intriguing to me. This prequel and the movie gives me an irresistible urge to read the book in question. I will do that and let you know how that goes. I have great expectations!
A very short book labelled a prequel to what presumably the author would like to draw you in to. It is well written with good interplay between the two main characters. This was free and is a good read, smart promotional of the original book.
Wow! Really good story with a great premise towards reincarnation. Can't wait til the movie comes out. What a jackpot for a first time writer!! Congratulations
Whether you've seen the film Infinite (watching it piqued my intrigue and led to my reading this book) or not, this book will leave you wanting more. This story is the foundation, and sets the tone, for all the works to follow, whichever medium the executor utilizes.
This was an interesting approach to telling a story. This first book gives the origins of the author coming across the story that is told in the second book. I’ve seen this done in a chapter or so before but never as a short story of its own. I thoroughly enjoyed this prequel and am excited to go straight on to the next book immediately.
This book outlines how the author discovered his source material for The Reincarnationist Papers and his partnership with his translator.
The book is well written and definitely stirred me to want to read the following book to discover more about the life of Evan Michaels and people like him - people who remember their past lives and belong to a secret society.
I listened to the audiobook of the 1st book in the series and although I found it enjoyable I didn't find it as enjoyable as this prequel. I really liked the characters Eric and Marina and their relationship's dynamic for in search of the truth and proof that the writing in Evan's notebooks were fact.
A teaser to lead into the series...An American in Rome finds books written in an ancient language and he and friends attempt to translate them. Definitely a good taste of what the series might be.
Overall great concept, but sometimes a book has so much going on that it’s too much, and you’re working way too hard trying to understand all the different directions the author is trying to go.
Loved the prequel and am looking forward to reading books 2 & 3 by Eric Maikranz. The storyline is right up my alley. Written in first person, I became totally immersed from page one and finished book in a single sitting. I have to say, the translator Marina annoyed me somewhat with her bolshie attitude and with monopolizing the writings of Evan that were written in Bulgarian, reading through before translating them, but without her Eric would no doubt have found it difficult to prove as a legitimate record of Evan's past lives. Story flowed nicely with no errors. EF Holt, author of Soldier Sailor Lover Slave: A Story of a Woman's Nine Past Lives
I have to admit I got a bit confused when I came to GoodReads to rate/review The Reincarnationist Papers ... I accidentally clicked on The Reincarnationist first ... read the blurb and "that's not what it was about!" I figured out my error ... sort of. I had borrowed The Reincarnationist Papers with AudiblePlus, but I'll often come to Amazon and grab the sample of the Kindle copy to get a visual peek at a bit of the story. When I searched, it appeared I already had it in my library. What I had was THIS prequel, and so I finally figured out which was which here on GoodReads to get my review of the full audiobook (and I did get the sample) but then I was curious as to what it was I had in my Kindle Cloud.
Whereas the "intro" to The Reincarnationist Papers tells of the discovery and translation in a very truncated way, this little novella add-on goes much more in depth about that process. Instead of just a paragraph, we get several chapters.
It was really interesting to read as the author/translator got through more of the notebooks, had some discussions about what reincarnation would mean.
So while this isn't required to understand or really add to the main story, it was an enjoyable prequel. I was glad I figured out that I had it ... and it's the first book I've READ (not listened to) in a while!
I am interested to see how things go with the second book. To see if he (the author)explains how he hasn’t just been killed off by this group that value their secrecy so much. How Evan doesn’t become an outcast for exposing them, but also how Evans story about his fourth life comes to light given that it must be relatively concurrent to when the story was written. I’m intrigued enough to read book 2 but cautious enough not to get too excited.
I received this book/novella from the author (and likely the folks at Bookfunnel.com) in return for an honest review.
This teaser starts off with the protagonist (seemingly written in the first person) find three notebooks, that were thought to be Russian (but ultimately in an older Bulgarian), that pique the interest of the main character.
The protagonist discovers that the papers were not Russian, as first thought, but rather were in an older Bulgarian. Being the innovative person that he is, the main character goes to the local Bulgarian embassy in Rome and asks the first clerk that he meets to give him a hand.
As far as a review goes, this appears to be an interesting concept and likely worthy of further reading ("Always leave them wanting more !!).
That said , my curiosity is piqued and I would give the first seven chapters of the story a solid four stars out of five.
As with all reviews, this is just my five cents worth.
