Jasmine's dad is a farmer, and her mum is a large-animal vet, so Jasmine spends a lot of time caring for animals and keeping them out of trouble. Unfortunately, this often means she gets into hot water herself...
A perfect animal story for younger readers by Waterstones Children's Book Prize-shortlisted author Helen Peters, with beautiful black-and-white illustrations by Ellie Snowdon.
When Jasmine learns that Mr Hobson has grown too old to take care of his pet donkey, Mistletoe, she is determined that they won't be parted. Of course, this means Mistletoe will have to come and live with her. With Christmas coming, how can she convince her parents to give her this most unusual present?
Helen Peters is the author of The Secret Hen House Theatre. She grew up on an old-fashioned farm in Sussex, surrounded by family, animals and mud. She spent most of her childhood reading stories and putting on plays in a tumbledown shed that she and her friends turned into a theatre. After university, she realised that she needed to find a job where someone would pay her to read stories and put on plays (though maybe not in a tumbledown shed) and so she became an English and Drama teacher. Several years later, finding herself as a stay-at-home mother of two, she decided to have a go at writing the sort of book she’d so enjoyed as a child. Helen lives with her husband and children in London, and she can still hardly believe that she now gets to call herself a writer.
If you love animals then read this book! Get ready with Jasmine as she tries to get her parents to let her keep a donkey called Mistletoe! Definitely worth reading!!
A sweet Christmas-themed chapter book perfect for the elementary school reader or as a read-aloud at bedtime. Wonderful illustrations throughout the book definitely enhance the reader's enjoyment of the story.
Book # 10 of the Jasmine Green Rescues series, introduces readers to Mistletoe, a donkey, owned by an old and frail man who can no longer care for him. Where will Mistletoe go?
Readers may recall from some of my previous reviews of this series that Jasmine Green's mom is a veterinarian, and based on passed experience readers will hope that Jasmine Green will be able to convince her mother to keep the donkey. Jasmine has pleaded with her mom in the past on behalf of other animals in need and even though her mom always says, "no more pets" she usually gives in before long.
This is another winning story by Helen Peters with terrific illustrations by Ellie Snowdon. I love how this series teaches children compassion for other living things. This book would be a perfect addition to your Christmas reads as there are a lot of characters to care about from the elderly man who can no longer care for the donkey, a boy on the autism spectrum and sick and/or depressed animals that need healing. I highly recommend this series.
Jasmine is a little girl who adores animals. She already has a rescue deer and pig that she diligently takes care of, so, her parents have told her no more! But when she meets Mistletoe, the donkey, everything changes.
Mistletoe’s elderly owner, Mr. Hobson, can no longer take care of his farm, or his beloved donkey. He is moving, and will be getting rid of everything including Mistletoe—he trying to adjust to the fact he won’t get to see his pal anymore.
Can Jasmine find a way to keep Mistletoe so the donkey will be close to Mr. Hobson? When the costumed donkey doesn’t work out, will Jasmine get in trouble if she substitutes Mistletoe in the Nativity play? Can the donkey be brought into the assisted living home to visit his former owner?
This chapter book has a sweet story about a child with a big heart. Set at Christmastime, there is a lot of excitement in the story. The fate of Mistletoe seems to have been settled at the beginning of the book. However, the tale has many suspenseful, fun twists and turns before the donkey gets his final home.
Children will laugh at the hijinks of Jasmine’s trouble-making brother, while understand the difficulty of getting parents to change their minds. I loved the fun legend about the cross on the donkey’s back.
I highly recommend this five-plus star book, in fact, I recommend the entire series, to children seven through ten years old. Each book contains a story about an endearing animal, and Jasmine’s part in their lives. You and your child will love them all!
Candlewick Press has provided bookreadingtic with a complimentary copy of, A Donkey Called Mistletoe, for the purpose of review.
This is the first US edition by Helen Peters and fortunately, Jasmine Green and her animal adoption talents (and love) are back. She and her friend Tom have discovered that Mr. Hudson, a neighbor, is leaving his home to move to an assisted living facility and has arranged for his beloved donkey Mistletoe to go to a shelter, but far away. Noone will see Mistletoe again! The argument is that she already has too many adoptees and it's too expensive to care for an old donkey. Jasmine won't quit wishing and the annual Christmas play just could be a big help. I've read a few in the past and they bring readers into some adventures, farm life, and kids who do get into trouble but are also kind and thoughtful, and often the trouble is brought by sheer enthusiasm for fun! Ellie Snowdon illustrates a few of the chapters. This, and others, are terrific chapter books for younger readers. Thanks to Candlewick Press for the advanced copy.
I really like the Jasmine Green Rescues series. A perfect series for children just graduating to middle grade reader books. It is short, illustrated throughout and the type is large. Quaint and charming.
This is a very sweet book series with two very thoughtful children at its heart. I love this latest book in the Jasmine Green Rescues series that offers on one level a heartwarming tale of multigenerational friendship and holiday spirit but also one about the human-animal bond which is a mutually beneficial one between people and animals that isleads to the health and well-being of both. This is at heart an All Creatures Great and Small for the young reader. This book is full of warm-fuzzies as well as a good dose of elbow grease. These kids do not back down from a challenge but all though not always by taking the most direct route, they take on every task with a sense of pride, the willingness to work hard and how showing kindness is the greatest reward one can experience. These thoughtful kids will go the extra mile. This is a really happy story about how honest hard work done with caring, compassion and loving kindness. I like the fun illustrated map at the front and the ones that move the story along and give life to the characters, and how the story gracefully opens questions about the feelings associated with loss of a beloved pet and the emotions and the actions of others.
This is a lovely new tale for the Christmas season and will warm the heart of any animal lover! I like the varied vocabulary used but still kept the story moving smoothly and it was very engaging.
