At one time I tried freelancing and it was difficult. This book would have been quite useful before embarking on the freelance journey. You don't have to be a freelancer to enjoy this book. It broadly talks about relationships with customers and how to delegate a virtual assistant to handle your website or your taxes. Laura Briggs is very direct and provides lots of real world examples from her business.
This book really is a great roadmap for scaling your business, but I will say that it’s not really targeted for someone who doesn’t have a freelance business already. I do not yet have a freelance business, but it’s something I’m trying to work toward. I loved reading about the trial and error the author experienced as well as the potential I can have in the freelance world.
This book is exactly what you should expect from a well marketed gig economy piece, a slightly clickbaity title, a few very sharp and focused outline points you can summarise to a short essay/bullet list but narrated with lot of effort to expand and break it down with lots of real life experiences. I'm not entirely sure if this should be a book on its own, but maybe the lengthy prose helped infuse more information at a slower pace or I just wasted an extra hour of my life, I'll never know, either way I learned a thing or two and i'm glad its not a total stud, to be honest it was more than what I expected from it and I would recommend to anyone who wants to understand the landscape and navigate it better. If I can leave a note to the publisher, it would probably be to choose a title like 'hitchhikers guide to the gig economy' or something of that sort, I actually read it only due to the reviews and the title made me think twice about picking it up.
When I decided to make a career shift and focus on freelance consulting, I looked for a book that could give me advice on how to operationalize my new venture. There is a lot of good information in this book and supporting resources at the author's website to help work through different aspects of building a freelance business. Especially valuable was the focus on mindset work when beginning a freelance business - it seems so simple but requires a lot of intentionality!
I think there could have been more said about making the numbers work, but this is a great overall resource for both aspiring and established freelancers.
Excellent book! I'm a huge fan of Laura's podcast and just had to purchase her book. I wasn't disappointed. I've been freelancing for a little under two years and am experiencing constant growth. This book was an excellent stepping stone with a lot of applicable advise for any freelance trying to grow their business (whether you're looking to hit 50k, 100k, or 250k!). Highly recommend it. The online resources are a huge bonus too.
Excellent book! I've been freelancing going on 7 years. I'd consider myself savvy in finding freelance work. After reading this book, I discovered many things I need to do to truly maximize my success as a freelancer and provide quality service to my clients. I plan to update my review in the next couple of months after trying the new strategies learned from this book.
A genuinely helpful book on creative self-employment, regardless of whether a six-figure income is your goal. No gimmicks, no over-the-top hype, no toxic positivity, no weird entrepreneurial girlboss or dude-with-a-podcast rhetoric. Simply written, actionable, and informative. I listened to the audiobook but am thinking of getting a hard copy to re-read and reference in the future.
My curriculum at SNHU recommends and uses this book, and I learned a lot from Laura. Her writing is easy to grasp, flows well, and gives me insights I never could have imagined—another book for the shelves of professional writers.
Informative book. I already knew some of what was covered in it because I learned it in grad school, but it was still a great read. I'll probably keep it as a go-to book for when I need a refresher.
Not quite as helpful as I hoped. A lot of it was about scaling your business to the point I have no intention of reaching. But the first few chapters had some helpful stuff.
I'm still learning about freelancing, but this felt very practical and useful. The online (free) resources are really great too. Unlike many self-help/non-fiction books, this one had things I wanted to write down to remember and take action on. It may even earn a place on my "to keep" shelf.
